Abstract: Selective manipulation of micrometric objects in a standard microscopy environment is possible with miniaturized acoustical tweezers., Acoustical tweezers based on focalized acoustical vortices hold the promise of precise contactless manipulation of millimeter down to submicrometer particles, microorganisms, and cells with unprecedented combined selectivity and trapping force. Yet, the widespread dissemination of this technology has been hindered by severe limitations of current systems in terms of performance and/or miniaturization and integrability. Here, we unleash the potential of focalized acoustical vortices by developing the first flat, compact, paired single electrode focalized acoustical tweezers. These tweezers rely on spiraling transducers obtained by folding a spherical acoustical vortex on a flat piezoelectric substrate. We demonstrate the ability of these tweezers to grab and displace micrometric objects in a standard microfluidic environment with unique selectivity. The simplicity of this system and its scalability to higher frequencies open tremendous perspectives in microbiology, microrobotics, and microscopy.

Abstract: Gelatin based adhesives have been used in the last decades in different biomedical applications due to the excellent biocompatibility, easy processability, transparency, non-toxicity, and reasonable mechanical properties to mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM). Gelatin adhesives can be easily tuned to gain different viscoelastic and mechanical properties that facilitate its ocular application. We herein grafted glycidyl methacrylate on the gelatin backbone with a simple chemical modification of the precursor, utilizing epoxide ring-opening reactions and visible light-crosslinking. This chemical modification allows the obtaining of an elastic protein-based hydrogel (GELGYM) with excellent biomimetic properties, approaching those of the native tissue. GELGYM can be modulated to be stretched up to 4 times its initial length and withstand high tensile stresses up to 1.95 MPa with compressive strains as high as 80% compared to Gelatin-methacryloyl (GeIMA), the most studied derivative of gelatin used as a bioadhesive. GELGYM is also highly biocompatible and supports cellular adhesion, proliferation, and migration in both 2 and 3-dimensional cell-cultures. Abstract: Refractory pollutants often exist in wastewater after photocatalysis. Here, experiments, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) simulations were used to explain the different levels of photocatalytic degradation of organics in papermaking wastewater associated with two photocatalytic processes with the goal of improving environmental sustainability. The photocatalytic experiments of flocculation and SBR effluents of papermaking wastewater were studied in a reactor with nano-TiO2 colloid, followed by GC–MS analysis, and the different degradation levels of organics were explained based on DFT adsorption and photocatalysis simulations. The experimental results show that the total COD removal rates were 65.8% and 90.8% for the flocculation-photocatalysis and SBR-photocatalysis processes, and the resin acids and fatty acids in wastewater were classified as easily degradable pollutants and esters as refractory pollutants. The adsorption and photocatalysis simulations show that compared with dehydroabietic acid and pentadecanoic acid, the adsorption of glycerol monostearate by nano-TiO2 colloid is difficult, the reaction pathways for photocatalysis are complex and the band gap of TiO2 photocatalyst after adsorption is wide. The experimental and simulation results indicate that the different degradation levels are attributed to the difficulty of the adsorption and photocatalytic reactions of glycerol monostearate compared with the reactions of the other two easily degradable pollutants. Thus, the different photocatalytic degradation levels of organic pollutants in the two photocatalytic processes of papermaking wastewater indicate that sustainable photocatalytic technology could be applied to different types of industrial wastewater.

Abstract: Sustainability in electronics has a growing importance due to, e.g. increasing electronic waste, and global and European sustainability goals. Printing technologies and use of paper as a substrate enable manufacturing of sustainable electronic devices for emerging applications, such as the multi-layer anti-counterfeit label presented in this paper. This device consisted of electrochromic display (ECD) element, NFC (near field communication) tag and circuitry, all fully roll-to-roll (R2R) printed and assembled on plastic-free paper substrate, thus leading to a sustainable and recyclable device. Our setup uses harvested energy from HF field of a smartphone or reader, to switch an electrochromic display after rectification to prove authenticity of a product. Our novelty is in upscaling the manufacturing process to be fully printable and R2R processable in high-throughput conditions simulating industrial environment, i.e. in pilot scale. The printing workflow consisted of 11 R2R printed layers, all done in sufficient quality and registration. The printed antennas showed sheet resistance values of 32.9±1.9 mΩ/sq. The final yield was almost 1500 fully printed devices, and in R2R assembly over 1400 labels were integrated with 96.5% yield. All the assembled tags were readable with mobile phone NFC reader. The optical contrast (ΔE*) measured for the ECDs was over 15 for all the printed displays, a progressive switching time with a colour change visible in less than 5 s. The smart tag is ITO-free, plastic-free, fully printed in R2R and has a good stability over 50 cycles and reversible colour change from light to dark blue.

Abstract: In this work, a multi-scale model established from the concept of periodic homogenization is utilized to predict the cyclic and time-dependent response of thermoplastic-based woven composites. The macroscopic behaviour of the composite is determined from finite element simulations of the representative unit cell of the periodic microstructure, where the local non-linear constitutive laws of the components are directly integrated, namely, the matrix and the yarns. The thermoplastic matrix is described by a phenomenological multi-mechanisms constitutive model accounting for viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity and ductile damage. For the yarns, a hybrid micromechanical–phenomenological constitutive model accounting for anisotropic damage and anelasticity induced by the presence of a diffuse micro-crack network is utilized. The capabilities of the overall multi-scale model are validated by comparing the numerical predictions with experimental data. Abstract: This paper proposes an efficient decision support tool for the optimal production scheduling of a variety of paper grades in a paper machine. The tool is based on a continuous-time scheduling model and generalized disjunctive programming. As the full-space scheduling model corresponds to a large-scale mixed integer linear programming model, we apply data analytics techniques to reduce the size of the decision space, which has a profound impact on the computational efficiency of the model and enables us to support the solution of large-scale problems. The data-driven model is based on an automated method of identifying the forbidden and recommended paper grade sequences, as well as the changeover durations between two paper grades. The results from a real industrial case study show that the data-driven model leads to good results in terms of both solution quality and CPU time in comparison to the full-space model.

Abstract: International audience; This paper focuses on hydrogen production for green mobility applications (other applications are currently under investigation). Firstly, a brief state of the art of hydrogen generation by hydrolysis with magnesium is shown. The hydrolysis performance of Magnesium powder ball–milled along with different additives (graphite and transition metals TM = Ni, Fe, and Al) is taken for comparison. The best performance was observed with Mg–10 wt.% g mixtures (95% of theoretical hydrogen generation yield in about 3 min). An efficient solution to control this hydrolysis reaction is proposed to produce hydrogen on demand and to feed a PEM fuel cell. Tests on a bench fitted with a 100 W Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell have demonstrated the technological potential of this solution for electric assistance applications in the field of light mobility.

Abstract: Cationic lanthanide complexes are generally able to spontaneously internalize into living cells. Following our previous works based on diMe-cyclen framework, a second generation of cationic water-soluble lanthanide complexes based on a constrained cross-bridged cyclam macrocycle functionalized with donor-p-conjugated picolinate antennas has been prepared with europium(III) and ytterbium(III). Their spectroscopic properties were thoroughly investigated in various solvents and rationalized with the help of DFT calculations. A significant improvement is observed in the case of the Eu3+ complex, while the Yb3+ analogous conserve an excellent brightness in aqueous solvent. Two-photon (2P) microscopy imaging experiments on living T24 human cancer cells confirmed the spontaneous internalization of the probes and images with good signal-to-noise have been obtained in the classical NIR-to-visible configuration with Eu3+ luminescent bioprobe and in the NIR-to-NIR with the Yb3+ one.

The preliminary design of thin-walled structures can be stated in the form of a constrained non-linear programming problem (CNLPP) involving requirements of different nature intervening at the different scales of the structure. The proposed multi-scale optimisation (MSO) strategy is characterised by two main features. Firstly, the CNLPP is formulated in the most general sense by including all design variables involved at each pertinent scale of the problem. Secondly, two scales (with the related design requirements) are considered: (a) the structure macroscopic scale, where low-fidelity FE models are used and (b) the structure mesoscopic scale (or component level), where more accurate FE models are involved. In particular, the mechanical responses of the structure are evaluated at both global and local scales, avoiding the use of approximated analytical methods. The MSO is here applied to the least-weight design of an aluminium fuselage barrel of a wide-body aircraft. Fully parametric global and local FE models are interfaced with an in-house metaheuristic algorithm. Refined local FE models are created only for critical regions of the structure, automatically detected during the global analysis, and linked to the global one, thanks to the implementation of a sub-modelling approach. Abstract: We show that a strained wire of a Weyl semimetal supports a new type of gapless excitation, the chiral sound wave (CSW). It is a longitudinal charge density wave analog to the chiral magnetic wave predicted in the quark-gluon plasma but driven by an elastic axial pseudo-magnetic field. It involves the axial-axial-axial contribution to the chiral anomaly which couples the chiral charge density to the elastic axial gauge field. The chiral sound is unidirectional: it propagates along the elastic magnetic field and not in the opposite direction. The CSW may propagate for long distances as it does not couple directly to quickly dissipating electromagnetic plasmons, while its damping is controlled by the slow chirality flip rate. We propose an experimental setup to directly detect the chiral sound, which is excited by mechanical vibrations of the crystal lattice in the GHz frequency range. Abstract: Cellulose nanofiber films (CNFF) were treated via a welding process using ionic liquids (ILs). Acid-base-conjugated ILs derived from 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene [DBN] and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([emim][OAc]) were utilized. The removal efficiency of ILs from welded CNFF was assessed using liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The mechanical and physical properties of CNFF indicated surface plasticization of CNFF, which improved transparency. Upon treatment, the average CNFF toughness increased by 27%, and the films reached a Young's modulus of ∼5.8 GPa. These first attempts for IL "welding" show promise to tune the surfaces of biobased films, expanding the scope of properties for the production of new biobased materials in a green chemistry context. The results of this work are highly relevant to the fabrication of CNFFs using ionic liquids and related solvents. acceptedVersion

Abstract: Recent years have seen an increased interest towards utilizing bio-based and biodegradable materials for barrier packaging applications. Most of the above said materials usually have certain shortcomings that discourage their adoption as a preferred material of choice. Nanocellulose falls into such category. It has excellent barrier against grease, mineral oils and oxygen, but poor tolerance against water vapor, which makes it unsuitable to be used at high humidity. In addition, nanocellulose suspensions' high viscosity and yield stress already at low solids content, and poor adhesion to substrates create additional challenges for high-speed processing. Polylactic acid (PLA) is another potential candidate that has a reasonably high tolerance against water vapor, but rather poor barrier against oxygen. The current work explores the possibility to combine both these materials into thin multilayer coatings onto paperboard. A custom-built slot-die was used to coat either microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) or cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) onto pigment-coated baseboard in a continuous process. These were subsequently coated with PLA using a pilot scale extrusion coater. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was used as a reference extrusion coating. Cationic starch pre-coating and corona treatment improved the adhesion at nanocellulose/baseboard and nanocellulose/PLA interfaces, respectively. Water vapor transmission rate for nanocellulose + PLA coatings remained lower than the control PLA coating, even at a high relative humidity of 90% (38 oC). The multilayer coating had 98% lower oxygen transmission rate compared to just PLA coated baseboard and heptane vapor transmission rate reduced by 99% in comparison to baseboard. Grease barrier for nanocellulose + PLA coatings increased 5-fold compared to nanocellulose alone and 2-fold compared to PLA alone. This approach of processing nanocellulose and PLA into multiple layers utilizing slot-die and extrusion coating in tandem has the potential to produce a barrier packaging paper that is both 100% bio-based and biodegradable. publishedVersion

For this purpose, three water-soluble cellulose derivatives; namely 4(celluloseamino) butyric acid (CABA) 2(celluloseamino) succinic acid (CASA), and 3(celluloseamino) propane sulfonic acids (CAPSA) were synthesized from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) via esterification with tosyl chloride that was followed by nucleophilic substitution by the proper aminoalkyl acid derivative. The products were characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR, 13C NMR spectroscopy. The thermal stability, surface morphology, and the elemental composition of the new ampholytic biopolymers were also studied by TGA, EDX-SEM. The new ampholytic cellulose derivatives were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity on normal human retina cell line (RPE1) by MTT assay.

Abstract: We systematically investigated the effect of film-forming polyvinyl alcohol and crosslinkers, glyoxal and ammonium zirconium carbonate, on the optical and surface properties of films produced from TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs). In this regard, UV-light transmittance, surface roughness and wetting behavior of the films were assessed. Optimization was carried out as a function of film composition following the “random forest” machine learning algorithm for regression analysis. As a result, the design of tailor-made TOCNF-based films can be achieved with reduced experimental expenditure. We envision this approach to be useful in facilitating adoption of TOCNF for the design of emerging flexible electronics, and related platforms.

Abstract: This study combines the high-throughput capabilities of microfluidics with the sensitive measurements of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology to perform biophysical characterization of circulating cells for diagnostic purposes. The proposed device includes a built-in microchannel that is probed by two opposing tips performing compression and sensing separately. Mechanical displacement of the compressing tip (up to a maximum of 14 &micro, m) and the sensing tip (with a quality factor of 8.9) are provided by two separate comb-drive actuators, and sensing is performed with a capacitive displacement sensor. The device is designed and developed for simultaneous electrical and mechanical measurements. As the device is capable of exchanging the liquid inside the channel, different solutions were tested consecutively. The performance of the device was evaluated by introducing varying concentrations of glucose (from 0.55 mM (0.1%) to 55.5 mM (10%)) and NaCl (from 0.1 mM to 10 mM) solutions in the microchannel and by monitoring changes in the mechanical and electrical properties. Moreover, we demonstrated biological sample handling by capturing single cancer cells. These results show three important capabilities of the proposed device: mechanical measurements, electrical measurements, and biological sample handling. Combined in one device, these features allow for high-throughput multi-parameter characterization of single cells.

Abstract: International audience; The diagnosis of infectious diseases is entering a new and interesting phase. Technologies based on paper microfluidics, coupled to developments in isothermal amplification of Nucleic Acids (NAs) raise opportunities for bringing the methods of molecular biology in the field, in a low setting environment. A lot of work has been performed in the domain over the last few years and the landscape of contributions is rich and diverse. Most often, the level of sample preparation differs, along with the sample nature, the amplification and detection methods, and the design of the device, among other features. In this review, we attempt to offer a structured description of the state of the art. The domain is not mature and there exist bottlenecks that hamper the realization of Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) complying with the constraints of the field in low and middle income countries. In this domain however, the pace of progress is impressively fast. This review is written for a broad Lab on a Chip audience.

Abstract: In this paper, a new modelling approach is presented to describe the damaged mechanical response of unidirectional composites under the small strain assumption. The proposed constitutive equations inherits from the phenomenological theories of Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) but brings out a micromechanical description of the damaged Representative Volume Element (RVE) while being formulated in a proper thermodynamical framework. The model is provided with an implicit numerical scheme based on the so-called ”return mapping algorithm” as well as the formulation of the tangent operator. The identification and the prediction capabilities of the model are validated using experimental data including off-axis tensile tests. Finally, to provide a better understanding of the model, a multi-axial non-proportional simulation is performed and analysed. Abstract: International audience; Hybrid perovskite thin films have demonstrated impressive performance for solar energy conversion and optoelectronic applications. However, further progress will benefit from a better knowledge of the intrinsic photophysics of materials. Here, the temperature-dependent emission properties of CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals are investigated and compared to those of thin polycrystalline films by means of steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Single crystals photoluminescence present a sharp excitonic emission at high energy, with full width at half maximum of only 5 meV, assigned to free excitonic recombination. We highlight a strong thermal broadening of the free excitonic emission, due to exciton–LO-phonon coupling. The emission turned to be very short-lived with a subnanosecond dynamics, mainly induced by the fast trapping of the excitons. The free excitonic emission is completely absent of the thin film spectra, which are dominated by trap state bands.

Abstract: International audience; Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are bacterial polyesters usually produced from costly sugars or volatile fatty acids (VFAs). In this work, two processing waters rich in vegetable proteins and reducing sugars, i.e., a mixture of saccharose and stachyose in Leguminous Processing Water (LPW) and a mixture of glucose and fructose in Fruit Processing Water (FPW), were tested as growth medium for PHA production in a two-stage fermentation with a unique marine bacterial species: Halomonas i4786. In preliminary shake flask experiments, it was shown that the two media can effectively support the bacterial growth and the accumulation of PHA (evaluated using Nile Red staining). In batch cultivation mode in a 5-L fermentor, PHA productivities of 1.6 g L−1 and 1.8 g L−1 were further achieved within 72 h, in LPW and FPW respectively. Polymer characterization by Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Steric Exclusion Chromatography indicated that the two substrates led to the biosynthesis of polymers with different chain length, distribution and crystallinity. To summarize, these results show that by-products derived from local agri-food industry can be used as a user-adapted and cost-effective source to produce bio-sourced and biodegradable plastic materials

Abstract: A sensitive electrochemical molecularly imprinted sensor was developed for the detection of estradiol, by electropolymerization of p-aminothiophenol functionalized gold nanoparticles in the presence of estradiol as template molecule. The extraction of the template leads to the formation of cavities that are able to recognize and bind estradiol with high affinity. The performance of the developed sensor for the detection of estradiol was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry using a hexacyanoferrate/hexacyanoferrite solution as redox probe. The molecularly imprinted sensor exhibits a broad linear range, between 3.6 fM and 3.6 nM and a limit of quantification of 1.09 fM. Compared to the non-imprinted sensor, the imprinted sensor exhibits high affinity for the binding of estradiol. Moreover, selectivity studies, performed towards binding of testosterone, a hormone with similar chemical structure, proved high sensor selectivity. Furthermore, the molecularly imprinted sensor was applied for the analysis of spiked river samples with good recoveries. Abstract: Slippery, liquid-infused porous surfaces offer a promising route for producing omniphobic and anti-icing surfaces. Typically, these surfaces are made as a coating with expensive and time consuming assembly methods or with fluorinated films and oils. We report on a route for producing liquid-infused surfaces, which utilizes a liquid precursor fed oxygen-hydrogen flame to produce titania nanoparticles deposited directly on a low-density polyethylene film. This porous nanocoating, with thickness of several hundreds of nanometers, is then filled with silicone oil. The produced surfaces are shown to exhibit excellent anti-icing properties, with an ice adhesion strength of ∼12 kPa, which is an order of magnitude improvement when compared to the plain polyethylene film. The surface was also capable of maintaining this property even after cyclic icing testing. Slippery, liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) are nature inspired surfaces that are designed to repel liquid and solid materials. These surfaces have been shown to pose anti-icing properties, which broadens the available end-uses from the chemical industry to arctic transportation and energy production. The method behind repellency of SLIPSs relies on preventing outside liquids from penetrating the surface structure to the Wenzel state. Instead, the slippery liquid within the porous solid supports the Cassie-Baxter state (instead of air, here the porous structure is filled with lubricant), where the reduced area of the porous solid surface is available to interact with the liquid or ice to be repelled. The difference between Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter states is illustrated in Figure 1. This phenomenon is exploited in many superhydrophobic surfaces where an air cushion is entrapped within the porous solid surface. Abstract: The electronic structure of recently synthesized square superlattices with atomic coherence composed of PbSe, CdSe, or CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) attached along {100} facets is investigated using tight-binding calculations. In experimental realizations of these systems [W. H. Evers et al., Nano Lett. 13, 2317 (2013)], NC facets are atomically bonded, resulting in single-crystalline sheets, which, due to their nanogeometry, have an effective dimensionality below two. We predict electronic structures composed of successive bands formed by strong coupling between the wave functions of nearest-neighbor NCs. This coupling is mainly determined by the number of atoms at the NC bonding plane. The band structures deviate markedly from that of the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) quantum well; the 2D case can be recovered, however, if the effects of the nanogeometry are gradually reduced. The width of the bands can reach hundreds of meV, ascribing highly promising transport properties to square superlattices. The band edges are located at k=0 except for PbSe superlattices, where their position in k space surprisingly depends on the parity of the number of {100} atomic planes in the NCs. Our calculations demonstrate that semiconductors with dimensionality below two have a strong potential for (opto-)electronic, photovoltaic, and spintronic applications.

Abstract: This chapter reports the mechanical properties of starch&hyphen;based nanocomposite materials, considering that the starchy material can be used either as the continuous polymeric phase (matrix), or the nanodispersed phase (filler), or both. The first section of the chapter discusses the reinforcing effect of the different fillers used to improve the mechanical properties of thermoplastic starch, that is, inorganic clays, carbon nanotubes, and polysaccharide&hyphen;based (cellulose, starch) nanoparticles and attempts to give a critical comparison of the different reinforcements The second section talks about the reinforcing effect of starch nanocrystals, as well as the mechanisms proposed to explain it.

Abstract: International audience; The present work was focused on elucidating changes in the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (cell composition, ultrastructure) after exposure to antimicrobial plasma-mediated nanocomposite films. In order to achieve this, a nanosilver-containing coating was deposited onto stainless steel using radiofrequency HMDSO plasma deposition, combined with simultaneous silver sputtering. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of silver nanoparticles embedded in an organo-silicon matrix. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated the nanoparticle-based morphology of the deposited layer. The antifungal properties towards S. cerevisiae were established, since a 1.4 log reduction in viable counts was observed after a 24-h adhesion compared to control conditions with the matrix alone. Differences in cell composition after exposure to the nanosilver was assessed for the protein region using, for the first time, synchrotron Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy of single S. cerevisiae cells, through in situ mapping with sub-cellular spatial resolution. IR spectrum of yeast cells recovered after a 24-h adhesion to the nanosilver-containing coating revealed a significant downshift (20 cm −1) of the amide I peak at 1655 cm −1 , compared to freshly harvested cells. This lower band position, corresponding to a loss in α-helix structures, is indicative of the disordered secondary structures of proteins, due to the transition between active and inactive conformations under nanosilver-induced stress conditions. No significant effect on the nucleic acid region was detected. The inhibitory action of silver was targeted against both cell wall and intracellular proteins such as enzymes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of the yeastultrastructure confirmed serious morphological and structural damages. A homogeneous protein-binding distribution of nanosilver all over the cell was assumed, since the presence of electron-dense silver clusters was detected not only on the cell surface but also within the cell. For control experiments with the organosilicon matrix alone, no antimicrobial effect was observed, which was consistent with synchrotron FTIR results and TEM observations.

Abstract: International audience; We have investigated the effect of the insertion of a triblock peptide (hydrophobic−hydrophilic−hydrophobic) in a nonionic lamellar phase composed of C12E4, decane, and water, stabilized by bilayer thermal fluctuations. Circular dichroism shows the peptide to be unordered in water, whereas its hydrophilic part is rigid and organized in an α-helix in the presence of surfactant bilayers. Surface tension measurements prove that the peptide is located at the hydrophobic−hydrophilic interface. Together with spectrofluorometry, these experiments suggest that the peptide lies on the bilayer surface. The Caillé parameter, η, of the lamellar phase, obtained by SAXS experiments, decreases with peptide concentration. This decrease has been interpreted as an increase of the bilayer effective thickness induced by the peptide and is well fitted by a recent model. The bilayer bending rigidity κ increases linearly with peptide concentration, up to two times the rigidity of a bare bilayer with mole ratio of peptide to surfactant as low as 5.2 × 10-4. The smectic compressibility modulus, B̄, decreases, implying that the peptide presence softens interactions between bilayers.

Abstract: (Ba,Ca)(Ti,Zr)O3 solid solutions are promising lead-free piezoelectrics near their polymorphic phase boundary, which is believed to be linked to the interplay between B-site driven ferroelectricity and A-site driven ferroelectricity. Focusing on (Ba,Ca)TiO3, we support this picture from first-principles calculations. In particular, we show how steric effects related to the partial substitution of Ba by Ca largely enhance the Ca-driven ferroelectricity, already virtually allowed in the parent CaTiO3. The emergent interplay between the Ca-driven and Ti-driven mechanisms lowers the energy barrier between different polar states, which eventually results in a quasi-isotropic polarization under substitution of a small concentration of Ba by Ca.
