Abstract

Uncertainties in sea-level projections for the 21st century have focused ice sheet modelling efforts to include the processes that are thought to be contributing to the recently observed rapid changes at ice sheet margins. This effort is still in its infancy, however, leaving us unable to make reliable predictions of ice sheet responses to a warming climate if such glacier accelerations were to increase in size and frequency. The geological record, however, has long identified examples of nonlinear ice sheet response to climate forcing (Shackleton NJ, Opdyke ND. 1973. Oxygen isotope and paleomagnetic stratigraphy of equatorial Pacific core V28–239, late Pliocene to latest Pleistocene. Geological Society of America Memoirs145: 449–464; Fairbanks RG. 1989. Abstract

International audience; To reconstruct past fire activity in the West Pacific-East Asian region, we investigate a 360-ky pelagic sedimentary record from the Caroline Basin in the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) (core MD97-2140, 2547 in. water depth). In the lack of standard protocol and terminology for the determination of combustion-derived products in sedimentary archives, three proxies were compared with other paleoceanographic proxies: Oxidation Resistant Elemental Carbon (OREC), Black Carbon (BC), and microcharcoal. The mineral (CaCO(3)) and organic carbon (Corg) records of core MD97-2140 generally covary with the oxygen isotope record, suggesting that glacial/interglacial changes in ice-volume and sea-level control the preservation of CaCO(3) and terrigeneous inputs of Corg in the deep-sea sediments of the Caroline Basin. The changes in OREC are primarily connected to the changes in Corg record. In contrast, the BC and charcoal records, which better reflect the input of biomass burning products, are tightly connected with changes in the precession band (23 ky), likely through low-latitude atmospheric circulation patterns. A peculiar control by the competing influence of the long-term El Ninwo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-like forcing and the glacial/interglacial cycle on the East Asian summer monsoon (30-, 19-, 11- and 6-ky periods) is suggested. In addition, large increases in BC and charcoal are observed between ca. 53-43 and 12-10 ky BP. These events strikingly correspond to the main Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene periods of human colonization in the region, likely suggesting an additional anthropic impact on the fire activity. Abstract

Simulations of climate over the Last Millennium (850–1850 CE) have been incorporated into the third phase of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP3). The drivers of climate over this period are chiefly orbital, solar, volcanic, changes in land use/land cover and some variation in greenhouse gas levels. While some of these effects can be easily defined, the reconstructions of solar, volcanic and land use-related forcing are more uncertain. We describe here the approach taken in defining the scenarios used in PMIP3, document the forcing reconstructions and discuss likely implications.

Abstract

Ice-core records of climate from Greenland and Antarctica show asynchronous temperature variations on millennial timescales during the last glacial period 1 . The warming during the transition from glacial to interglacial conditions was markedly different between the hemispheres, a pattern attributed to the thermal bipolar see-saw 2 . However, a record from the Ross Sea sector of East Antarctica has been suggested to be synchronous with Northern Hemisphere climate change 3 . Here we present a temperature record from the Talos Dome ice core, also located in the Ross Sea sector. We compare our record with ice-core analyses from Greenland, based on methane synchronization 4 , and find clearly asynchronous temperature changes during the deglaciation. We also find distinct differences in Antarctic records, pointing to differences in the climate evolution of the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic sectors of Antarctica. In the Atlantic sector, we find that the rate of warming slowed between 16,000 and 14,500 years ago, parallel with the deceleration of the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and with a slight cooling over Greenland. In addition, our chronology supports the hypothesis that the cooling of the Antarctic Cold Reversal is synchronous with the Bolling‐Allerod warming in the northern hemisphere 14,700 years ago 5 . The period from about 8 to 25kyr before present (bp) includes the climate transition from the last glacial to the Holocene. As documented from polar ice cores and other climate archives, the pattern of climate changes throughout this transition is different between Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean and the Northern Hemisphere. The steady Antarctic deglacial warming reaches a first maximum (Antarctic Isotopic Maximum AIM1; ref.1)followedbyaninterruptiontowardscoolerconditionsduring the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). Abstract

A new calibration curve for the conversion of radiocarbon ages to calibrated (cal) ages has been constructed and internationally ratified to replace IntCal98, which extended from 0-24 cal kyr BP (Before Present, 0 cal BP = AD 1950). The new calibration data set for terrestrial samples extends from 0-26 cal kyr BP, but with much higher resolution beyond 11.4 cal kyr BP than IntCal98. Dendrochronologically-dated tree-ring samples cover the period from 0-12.4 cal kyr BP. Beyond the end of the tree rings, data from marine records (corals and foraminifera) are converted to the atmospheric equivalent with a site-specific marine reservoir correction to provide terrestrial calibration from 12.4-26.0 cal kyr BP. A substantial enhancement relative to IntCal98 is the introduction of a coherent statistical approach based on a random walk model, which takes into account the uncertainty in both the calendar age and the 14C age to calculate the underlying calibration curve (Buck and Blackwell, this issue). The tree-ring data sets, sources of uncertainty, and regional offsets are discussed here. The marine data sets and calibration curve for marine samples from the surface mixed layer (Marine04) are discussed in brief, but details are presented in Hughen et al. (this issue a). We do not make a recommendation for calibration beyond 26 cal kyr BP at this time; however, potential calibration data sets are compared in another paper (van der Plicht et al., this issue). © 2004 by the Arizona Board of Regents on behalf of the University of Arizona.
