Abstract: Ecclesiastical disentailment has traditionally been associated with seizing real estate owned by "dead hands" for immediate sale. The administrative and accounting documentation of the Cathedral Chapter of Seville shows how it was forced to dispose of numerous properties in two phases during the 19th century. This was not carried out through confiscation but through orderly sales organised by the ecclesiastical institution itself, which is not mentioned in the historical-economic literature. This study analyses these alienations, their causes, procedures and consequences, as well as the financial problems the Cathedral Chapter of Seville faced, the application for numerous loans and the sale of real estate. The sales process, in our opinion, was serious, transparent and professional.

Abstract: A pesar de la extensa bibliografía que existe en torno al Cristo de la Clemencia de Juan Martínez Montañés, siempre ha existido cierta confusión en torno a los espacios en los que ha estado almacenado o expuesto, desde su llegada al monasterio de la Cartuja hasta su depósito en la sacristía de los Cálices de la catedral de Sevilla. En el presente estudio se ofrece una secuencia cronológica que abarca las distintas situaciones que obligaron a movilizar a la imagen, ofreciendo información en torno a los distintos espacios que ha ocupado a lo largo del siglo XIX. In spite of the extensive bibliography that exists about the Christ of Clemency by Juan Martínez Montañés, there has always been some confusion about the places in which it has been exposed or deposited from his arrival to the Carthusian Monastery until his deposit in the Chalices’s Sacristy at the Cathedral of Seville. This paper offer a chronological sequence that includes the different situations that forced to move the image, offering information about the different spaces that it has occupied along the 19th century.

El documento presenta ciertas diferencias con los estudios posteriormente efectuados por Adolfo Fernández Casanova, director de las importantes obras de restauración emprendidas en el edifi cio entre 1882 y 1889., This study analyzes the 1880 report by architects Manuel Portillo and Juan Talavera on the restoration works needed in the Cathedral of Seville (Spain). The document shows some interesting differences with the diagnosis subsequently done by Adolfo Fernández Casanova, director of the important restoration woks carried out in the building from 1882 to 1889.
