The arrival of a plume head at Earth's continental lithosphere is often considered to be an important factor for continental break-up. However, the impact of plume impingement on strength and duration of a rift remains unclear. In this study, we quantify the mechanical and thermal influence of a plume (i.e. lithosphere erosion) on continental break-up. To do that we apply the three-dimensional numerical code SLIM3D that features realistic elasto-visco-plastic rheology. We model the thermo-mechanical response of a segment of Earth's lithosphere that is affected both by extension as well as plume-related lithosphere erosion in order to evaluate the influence on the overall force budget. We find that lithosphere erosion leads to a moderate lithospheric strength reduction of several TN/m. In a force-limited environment, however, this strength reduction may have strong influence on the timing of continental break-up, or it may even control whether continental break-up takes place at all. Additional reduction of the lithospheric strength is likely due to the massive emplacement of dikes that follows intensive melting within the plume head.

We present the GITEWS approach to source modeling for the tsunami early warning in Indonesia. Near-field tsunami implies special requirements to both warning time and details of source characterization. To meet these requirements, we employ geophysical and geological information to predefine a maximum number of rupture parameters. We discretize the tsunamigenic Sunda plate interface into an ordered grid of patches (150×25) and employ the concept of Green's functions for forward and inverse rupture modeling. Rupture Generator, a forward modeling tool, additionally employs different scaling laws and slip shape functions to construct physically reasonable source models using basic seismic information only (magnitude and epicenter location). GITEWS runs a library of semi- and fully-synthetic scenarios to be extensively employed by system testing as well as by warning center personnel teaching and training. Near real-time GPS observations are a very valuable complement to the local tsunami warning system. Their inversion provides quick (within a few minutes on an event) estimation of the earthquake magnitude, rupture position and, in case of sufficient station coverage, details of slip distribution.

The Indonesian archipelago is known for the occurrence of catastrophic earthquake-generated tsunamis along the Sunda Arc. The tsunami hazard associated with submarine landslides however has not been fully addressed. In this paper, we compile the known tsunamigenic events where landslide involvement is certain and summarize the properties of published landslides that were identified with geophysical methods. We depict novel mass movements, found in newly available bathymetry, and determine their key parameters. Using numerical modeling, we compute possible tsunami scenarios. Furthermore, we propose a way of identifying landslide tsunamis using an array of few buoys with bottom pressure units.

Our analysis of new bathymetric data reveals six submarine landslides at the eastern Sunda margin between central Java and Sumba Island, Indonesia. Their volumes range between 1 km³ in the Java fore-arc basin up to 20 km³ at the trench off Sumba and Sumbawa. We estimate the potential hazard of each event by modeling the corresponding tsunami and its run-up on nearby coasts. Four slides are situated remarkably close to the epicenter of the 1977 tsunamigenic Sumba M w = 8.3 earthquake. However, comparison of documented tsunami run-up heights and arrival times with our modeling results neither allows us to confirm nor can we falsify the hypothesis that the earthquake triggered these submarine landslides.

Pull-apart basins are depressions that form as the result of crustal extension along strike-slip systems where the sense of fault stepping or bending coincides with that of fault slip. They are common features of strike-slip systems. We perform a number of numerical thermomechanical experiments to explore how the rheology of the lithosphere influences basin evolution and lithospheric structure beneath the basin. Our modeling shows that basin subsidence results from the competition of extension of the brittle part of the lithosphere, which leads to its subsidence, and of the compensating flow of the deeper ductile part of the lithosphere, which pushes the extended brittle block upwards. The result of this competition is the subsidence rate. Strain partitioning beneath the basin and crustal structures is controlled by (i) the thickness of the brittle layer and basin width, (ii) the magnitude of strike-slip displacement, (iii) the rate of frictional softening of the crust, and (iv) the viscosity of the ductile part of the lithosphere. The thickness of the brittle layer and the viscosity of the underlying ductile part of the lithosphere in turn depend on temperature, composition and material softening. We interpret the modeling results, deducing simple analytical expressions based on the “brittle brick stretching” (BBS) approach, which despite its simplicity describes the structure and evolution of pull-apart basins reasonably well. We also demonstrate that the structure and evolution of the Dead Sea Basin, located at a left step of the Dead Sea Transform in the Middle East, is consistent with a BBS type of deformation with only a minor contribution from compensational flow in the ductile part of the lithosphere. Finally, we show that the formation of a deep narrow pull-apart basin in relatively cold lithosphere, as in the Dead Sea Basin, requires very low friction at major faults (lower than 0.1–0.2). If this condition is not satisfied, strike-slip deformation does not localise and deep basins do not form.

SUMMARY ∼82 000 P and S arrival times from ∼3000 sources recorded by ∼250 seismic stations from the revised ISC catalogue are employed to study a circular area of 6 ◦ radius centred on the Dead Sea. We use the linearized tomographic approach based on the rays constructed in a 1-D spherical velocity model and corrected for the Moho depth variation and relief. All the sources were relocated. As the result of simultaneous iterative inversion we get 3-D P and S velocity anomalies in the crust and uppermost mantle, Moho depth and corrected source parameters. The resulting images fit well with the existing tectonic elements in the study area. In the crust, a narrow P and S low-velocity anomaly marks the position of the Dead Sea Transform (DST) that is interpreted as sediments in the shallower layer and a zone of fractured and deformed rocks in the middle and lower crust. There is a narrow (50 km wide) band of thickening of the crust along the DST in the Arava valley between the Red Sea and Dead Sea and some 100 km north of the Dead Sea. This zone may be associated with the minimum of the lithospheric strength and, therefore, explain the location of the DST in the Arava Valley. The velocity anomalies under the crust and the map of the Moho depth clearly distinguish the oceanic (Levant basin) and continental types of crust (Asia Minor, Zagros, Cyprus and Eratosthenes Mount). Verification of the results takes an important part in this study. Inversions of different starting models and independent processing of data subsets show high robustness of the results. Synthetic tests clearly show the limits of the resolving power of the inversion with the existing data set.

Since the late Miocene, the two main segments of the central Andean high plateau, Altiplano and Puna, demonstrate different styles and magnitudes of tectonic shortening. Through numerical simulation of thermomechanical processes, we show that different shortening modes—pure and simple shear accompanied by thin-or thick-skinned tectonics—might be controlled by strength of the foreland uppermost crust and by temperature of the foreland lithosphere. Mechanical weakening and failure of the thick Paleozoic sediments overlying the cold lithosphere in the Altiplano foreland at 13–9 Ma explains the transition from pure to simple shear shortening accompanied by broad thin-skinned thrusting, started before the major uplift of the plateau. However, the high strength of the uppermost crust combined with a relatively warm lithosphere results in the thick-skinned shortening typical for the foreland of the Puna. Failure of Paleozoic sediments in the Altiplano foreland significantly reduces the force required to shorten the lithosphere, which may be the reason for the increased bulk shortening rate in the late Miocene.

More than 50 per cent of the Earth´s upper mantle consists of olivine and it is generally thought that mantle-derived melts are generated in equilibrium with this mineral. Here, however, we show that the unusually high nickel and silicon contents of most parental Hawaiian magmas are inconsistent with a deep olivine-bearing source, because this mineral together with pyroxene buffers both nickel and silicon at lower levels. This can be resolved if the olivine of the mantle peridotite is consumend by reaction with melts derived from rexycled oceanic crust, to form a secondary pyroxenitic source. Our modelling shows that more than half of Hawaiian magmas formed during the past 1 Myr came from this source. In addition, we estimate that the proportion of recycled (oceanic) crust varies from 30 per cent near the plume centre to insignificant levels at the plume edge. These results are also consistent with volcano volumes, magma volume flux and seismological observations.

The classic example of the not-well-understood rapid change of tectonic plate motion is the increase and then decrease of the convergence rate between the Nazca and South America plates during the past 25–20 m.y. that coincided with the growth of the Andes Mountains. Currently, the decrease in convergence rate is explained either by the increasing load of the Andes or by the appearance of flat slab segments beneath South America. Here, we present an alternative view based on a thermomechanical self-consistent (gravity driven) model of Nazca plate subduction. We explain the changes in the convergence rate as a natural consequence of the Nazca plate penetration into the transition zone and lower mantle after long-term oblique subduction of the Farallon plate. The model is consistent with seismic tomographic images of the Nazca plate beneath South America. Our model also shows that the presence of the Andes does not significantly affect the convergence rate between the Nazca and South America plates.

The 1989 VSP program at the KTB pilot hole was complemented in 1992 by a standard VSP in the KTB super-deep borehole from 3000 to 6013 m. P-wave velocities oscillate around 5.8 km/s in the upper 3150 m in accordance with sonic log velocities and correlate with paragneisses which prevail in this depth range. At about 3150 m depth, velocities increase to 6.4 km/s correlating with metabasites which dominate in the depth range 3150 to 7500 m. Laboratory measurements and petrophysical modelling provide evidence that the intrinsic velocities were reduced by 5–10% by fracture density and porosity at all depth ranges. Subvertical dip (50–70°) in structures and textures prevail, causing about 10% S-wave anisotropy, indicated by direct observations of S-wave splitting. Pronounced P-wave reflections, accompanied by P- to S-wave conversions and a lack of S-wave reflections, occur in the lower depth range only (3000–6000 m) and correlate with fluid-filled fracture systems. Lithological contrasts (gneiss-amphibolite) play a minor role in generating reflections. The most prominent reflecting elements known from surface profiling and 3D-surveys (i.e. the ‘Franconian Lineament’ reflector at about 7 km, and P-wave reflections at 8.3 km with notably absent associated S-wave reflections) coincide with pronounced anomalies observed in the logging data indicating the presence of major fracture zones.

A new technique for interpretation of 3-D seismic tomographic models in terms of temperature, degree of partial melt and rock composition is presented and tested. We consider both anharmonic and anelastic temperature effects on seismic velocities as well as the effects of mineral reactions, composition and partial melt. It is shown that composition effect is small (less than 1% of velocity) if there are no strongly depleted, Mg-rich harzburgites. We calculate anharmonic temperature derivatives of seismic velocities from compositions of mantle xenoliths. The parameters of a non-linear frequency and temperature-dependent model of attenuation have been taken from published laboratory experiments and calibrated using global Q observations in the upper mantle. For every block of the tomographic model we calculate the absolute temperature and melt fraction required to fit the observed V p perturbation, the average temperature of the tomographic layer being constrained by the observed surface heat flow. With these temperatures we calculate attenuation, density, V p and V s from petrophysical modelling, using the average for 80 mantle xenoliths samples from the French Massif Central. The technique is applied to a recently published 3-D teleseismic P wave tomographic model of the upper mantle beneath the French Massif Central. The observed velocity perturbations are probably caused there by variations in temperature. Temperature does not reach the dry solidus temperature (except for a few tomographic blocks), although it comes close to it at the depth of 60–100 km below volcanic areas. At high subsolidus temperatures the contribution of anelasticity to velocity perturbations is at least as important as the combined effect of anharmonicity and mineral reactions. Our model is consistent with the Pn velocities from refraction seismic studies, Q S estimations from surface waves, observed gravity, geoid, topography and surface heat flow, as well as with the composition and temperatures derived from mantle xenoliths. We suggest that the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary is uplifted to 50–60 km depth beneath the main volcanic fields. The central and southern part of the Massif Central is underlain by the hot mantle body (plume?) with a potential temperature that is 100–200°C higher than the average potential temperature of the upper mantle.

Transformation kinetics associated with the presence of a metastable olivine wedge in old and fast subducting slabs has been the subject of many studies in the last years. Even with improvements in kinetics models, many of the parameters are still not well constrained. In particular, there is no consensus on the blocking temperature that could inhibit the transformation from olivine to spinel. Recently, based on anomalous later phases in the P wave coda and differential P wave slowness, a wedge of metastable olivine was detected in the Marianas subduction zone, that is approximately 25 km wide, at a depth of 590 km and is truncated at 630 km. In this work, a thermomechanical model was used to mimic the subduction in the Marianas and try different blocking temperatures for the olivine/spinel transformation. The model includes, among other features, non-linear elasto-visco-plastic rheology based on laboratory data, phase transformations, latent heat, proper coupling between stress and thermal state of the slab and force balance of the system. The results show a positive correlation between the blocking temperature, depth of the wedge and its distance from the trench (or subduction angle). We compare these results to the situation in the Marianas and suggest that a blocking temperature for the olivine/spinel transformation of approximately 725 °C would be the most likely. The volume of the wedge presents some oscillations that we relate to a runaway effect of the transformation kinetics in the mantle transition zone. Namely, the interaction between latent heat release and the advection of the isotherms due to the subduction velocity. The inclusion of shear heating in the model was fundamental to modeling such a subduction zone. Without shear heating, the slab shows a higher level of internal stress and the necessary bending to mimic the Marianas subduction zone cannot be reached.

In-situ elastic properties in deep boreholes are controlled by several factors, mainly by lithology, petrofabric, fluid-filled cracks and pores. In order to separate the effects of different factors it is useful to extract lithology-controlled part from observedin-situ velocities. For that purpose we calculated mineralogical composition and isotropic crack-free elastic properties in the lower part of the Kola borehole from bulk chemical compositions of core samples. We use a new technique of petrophysical modeling based on thermodynamic approach. The reasonable accuracy of the modeling is confirmed by comparison with the observations of mineralogical composition and laboratory measurements of density and elastic wave velocities in upper crustal crystalline rocks at high confining pressure. Calculations were carried out for 896 core samples from the depth segment of 6840–10535m. Using these results we estimate density and crack-free isotropic elastic properties of 554 lithology-defined layers composing this depth segment. Average synthetic P- wave velocity appears to be 2.7% higher than the velocity from Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP), and 5% higher than sonic log velocity. Average synthetic S-wave velocity is 1.4 % higher than that from VSP. These differences can be explained by superposition of effects of fabric-related anisotropy, cracks aligned parallel to the foliation plain, and randomly oriented cracks, with the effect of cracks being the predominant control. Low sonic log velocities are likely caused by drilling-induced cracking (hydrofractures) in the borehole walls. The calculated synthetic density and velocity cross-sections can be used for much more detailed interpretations, for which, however, new, more detailed and reliable seismic data are required.

International audience; Large igneous provinces (LIPs) are known for their rapid production of enormous volumes of magma (up to several million cubic kilometres in less than a million years)1, for marked thinning of the lithosphere2,3, often ending with a continental break-up, and for their links to global environmental catastrophes4,5. Despite the importance of LIPs, controversy surrounds even the basic idea that they form through melting in the heads of thermal mantle plumes2,3,6,7,8,9,10. The Permo-Triassic Siberian Traps11--the type example and the largest continental LIP1,12--is located on thick cratonic lithosphere1,12 and was synchronous with the largest known mass-extinction event1. However, there is no evidence of pre-magmatic uplift or of a large lithospheric stretching7, as predicted above a plume head2,6,9. Moreover, estimates of magmatic CO2 degassing from the Siberian Traps are considered insufficient to trigger climatic crises13,14,15, leading to the hypothesis that the release of thermogenic gases from the sediment pile caused the mass extinction15,16. Here we present petrological evidence for a large amount (15 wt%) of dense recycled oceanic crust in the head of the plume and develop a thermomechanical model that predicts no pre-magmatic uplift and requires no lithospheric extension. The model implies extensive plume melting and heterogeneous erosion of the thick cratonic lithosphere over the course of a few hundred thousand years. The model suggests that massive degassing of CO2 and HCl, mostly from the recycled crust in the plume head, could alone trigger a mass extinction and predicts it happening before the main volcanic phase, in agreement with stratigraphic and geochronological data for the Siberian Traps and other LIPs5.

The Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) are known for their production of up to several million km3 of magma in less than a few million years. They are likely associated with dramatic thinning of the lithosphere and they are often related to global environmental catastrophes. Despite the obvious importance of understanding the origin of LIPs, controversy surrounds even the basic idea that LIPs form through melting in the heads of thermal mantle plumes. The classic example of the “origin-problematic” LIP is the Permo-Triassic Siberian Traps, the largest continental LIP synchronized with the largest known mass-extinction event. It was erupted at a thick cratonic lithosphere, but there was no lithospheric stretching and pre-magmatic uplift, expected above the mantle plume head. It is also commonly believed that CO2 magma degassing from the Siberian Traps was not enough to trigger climatic crises. Here we present a numerical finite element thermomechanical model and supporting petrological data implying a large amount (ca. 15 Wt%) of recycled oceanic crust within the head of a hot mantle plume beneath the cratonic lithosphere. Model and data suggest that the Siberian Traps originated from the melting of the head of a mantle plume with a potential temperature of about 1600C, that contained about as much dense recycled oceanic crust as it could carry, thus maintaining almost neutral buoyancy in the mantle. Because of the low buoyancy of the plume, no pre-magmatic uplift was produced. The large amount of melt generated from this plume was responsible for the heterogeneous delamination of the thick cratonic lithosphere over a few hundred thousand years. Degassing of CO2 and HCl stored in the recycled crust within the plume was likely much more extensive than previously proposed. The predicted quantity of released CO2 (120-150 1012 tones) and isotopic composition of C (delta13C=-12 promille) is consistent with data on isotopic excursions for C and Ca at Permo-Triassic boundary (Payne et al., PNAS, 2010) and was probably enough to trigger the Permo-Triassic mass-extinction event. According to our model, the main mass extinction event must have happened before the main phase of flood basalt extrusion. In contrast, the CO2 from the heating of carbon-rich sediments that was recently suggested as a trigger for the mass extinction (Ganino and Arndt, Geology, 2009; Svenson et al., EPSL, 2009) should be released during the main phase of magmatism, when the largest magmatic heat input is expected. The new precise U/Pb dating of the magmatic units of the Siberian traps is required to choose between these two hypotheses. However, the existing few high-quality U/Pb datings (Kamo et al., EPSL, 2003; Svenson et al., EPSL, 2009) indeed suggest that the major mass-extinction event at 252.3 Ma (Mundil et al., GS London SP, 2010) predated the main phase of magmatism, that may be common for other LIPs as well (Wignall, ES Rev.,2001). Additional large amounts of gases released from the heating of coal-rich sediments during the main phase of the Siberian Traps may have been the reason for a number of C excursion pulses during the late phases of the biotic crises.

Fault zones are the locations where motion of tectonic plates, often associated with earthquakes, is accommodated. Despite a rapid increase in the understanding of faults in the last decades, our knowledge of their geometry, petrophysical properties, and controlling processes remains incomplete. The central questions addressed here in our study of the Dead Sea Transform (DST) in the Middle East are as follows: (1) What are the structure and kinematics of a large fault zone? (2) What controls its structure and kinematics? (3) How does the DST compare to other plate boundary fault zones? The DST has accommodated a total of 105 km of left-lateral transform motion between the African and Arabian plates since early Miocene (similar to 20 Ma). The DST segment between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea, called the Arava/Araba Fault (AF), is studied here using a multidisciplinary and multiscale approach from the mu m to the plate tectonic scale. We observe that under the DST a narrow, subvertical zone cuts through crust and lithosphere. First, from west to east the crustal thickness increases smoothly from 26 to 39 km, and a subhorizontal lower crustal reflector is detected east of the AF. Second, several faults exist in the upper crust in a 40 km wide zone centered on the AF, but none have kilometer-size zones of decreased seismic velocities or zones of high electrical conductivities in the upper crust expected for large damage zones. Third, the AF is the main branch of the DST system, even though it has accommodated only a part (up to 60 km) of the overall 105 km of sinistral plate motion. Fourth, the AF acts as a barrier to fluids to a depth of 4 km, and the lithology changes abruptly across it. Fifth, in the top few hundred meters of the AF a locally transpressional regime is observed in a 100-300 m wide zone of deformed and displaced material, bordered by subparallel faults forming a positive flower structure. Other segments of the AF have a transtensional character with small pull-aparts along them. The damage zones of the individual faults are only 5-20 m wide at this depth range. Sixth, two areas on the AF show mesoscale to microscale faulting and veining in limestone sequences with faulting depths between 2 and 5 km. Seventh, fluids in the AF are carried downward into the fault zone. Only a minor fraction of fluids is derived from ascending hydrothermal fluids. However, we found that on the kilometer scale the AF does not act as an important fluid conduit. Most of these findings are corroborated using thermomechanical modeling where shear deformation in the upper crust is localized in one or two major faults; at larger depth, shear deformation occurs in a 20-40 km wide zone with a mechanically weak decoupling zone extending subvertically through the entire lithosphere.

Here we combine petrological-geochemical and thermomechanical modeling techniques to explain origin of primary magmas of both Maimecha–Kotui meimechites and the Gudchikhinskaya basalts of Norilsk region, which represent, respectively, the end and the beginning of flood magmatism in the Siberian Trap Province. We have analyzed the least altered samples of meimechites, their olivine phenocrysts, and melt inclusions in olivines, as well as samples of dunites and their olivines, from boreholes G-1 and G-3 within the Guli volcanoplutonic complex in the Maimecha–Kotui igneous province of the northern Siberian platform. The Mn/Fe and Ni/MgO ratios in olivines indicate a mantle peridotite source of meimechites. Meimechite parental magma that rose to shallow depths was rich in alkalis and highly magnesian (24 wt.% MgO), largely degassed, undersaturated by sulfide liquid and oxidized. At greater depths, it was, likely, high in CO2 (6 wt.%) and H2O (2 wt.%) and resulted from partial melting of initially highly depleted and later metasomatized harzburgite some 200 km below the surface. Trace-element abundances in primary meimechite magma suggest presence of garnet and K-clinopyroxene, in the mantle source and imply for genetic link to the sources of the early Siberian flood basalts (Gudchikhinskaya suite) and kimberlites. The analyzed dunite samples from the Guli complex have chemistry and mineralogy indicating their close relation to meimechites. We have also computed thermomechanical model of interaction of a hot mantle plume with the shield lithosphere of variable thickness, using realistic temperature- and stress-dependent visco-elasto-plastic rocks rheology and advanced finite element solution technique. Based on our experimental and modeling results we propose that a Permian–Triassic plume, with potential temperature of about 1650 °C transported a large amount of recycled ancient oceanic crust (up to 15%) as SiO2-oversaturated carbonated eclogite. Low-degree partial melting of eclogite at depths of 250–300 km produced carbonate-silicate melt that metasomatized the lithospheric roots of the Siberian shield. Further rise of the plume under relatively attenuated lithosphere (Norilsk area) led to progressive melting of eclogite and formation of reaction pyroxenite, which then melted at depths of 130–180 km. Consequantly, a large volume of melt (Gudchikhinskaya suite) penetrated into the lithosphere and caused its destabilization and delamination. Delaminated lithosphere that included fragments of locally metasomatized depleted harzburgite subsided into the plume and was heated to the temperatures of the plume interior with subsequent generation of meimechite magma. Meimechites showed up at the surface only under thicker part of the lithosphere aside from major melting zone above because otherwise they were mixed up in more voluminous flood basalts. We further suggest that meimechites, uncontaminated Siberian flood basalts and kimberlites all share the same source of strongly incompatible elements, the carbonated recycled oceanic crust carried up by hot mantle plume.
