Histopathological images are an important resource for clinical diagnosis and biomedical research. From an image understanding point of view, the automatic annotation of these images is a challenging problem. This paper presents a new method for automatic histopathological image annotation based on three complementary strategies, first, a part-based image representation, called the bag of features, which takes advantage of the natural redundancy of histopathological images for capturing the fundamental patterns of biological structures, second, a latent topic model, based on non-negative matrix factorization, which captures the high-level visual patterns hidden in the image, and, third, a probabilistic annotation model that links visual appearance of morphological and architectural features associated to 10 histopathological image annotations. The method was evaluated using 1,604 annotated images of skin tissues, which included normal and pathological architectural and morphological features, obtaining a recall of 74% and a precision of 50%, which improved a baseline annotation method based on support vector machines in a 64% and 24%, respectively.

The main objective of this thesis is to study the hazardous materials (HazMat) transportation problem considered as a heterogeneous fleet vehicle routing problem. HazMat transportation decisions comprise different and sometimes conflicting objectives. Two are considered in this work, the total routing cost and the total routing risk. The first task undertaken was the formulation of a mathematical model for the routing risk minimization, which depends on the type of vehicle, the material being transported, and the load change when the vehicle goes from one customer to another. A piecewise linear approximation is employed to keep a mixed integer linear programing formulation.Hybrid solution methods based on neighborhood search are explored for solving the routing risk minimization. This includes the study of neighborhood structures and the development of a Variable Neighborhood Descent (VND) algorithm for local search, and a perturbation mechanism (shaking neighborhoods). A post-optimization procedure is applied to improve the solution quality.Finally, two different solution approaches, a multi-objective dominance-based algorithm and a meta-heuristic epsilon-constraint method are employed for addressing the multi-objective version of the problem. Two performance metrics are used: the hyper volume and the ∆-metric. The front approximations show that a small increment in the total routing cost can produce a high reduction in percentage of the expected consequences given the probability of a HazMat transportation incident, L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier le problème du transport de matières dangereuses (HazMat) vu comme un problème de tournées de véhicules à flotte hétérogène. Les décisions pour ce type de transport comportent des objectifs différents, parfois antagonistes. Deux sont pris en compte dans ce travail, le coût et le risque. La première tâche entreprise a été la formulation d'un modèle mathématique pour la minimisation du risque, qui dépend du type de véhicule, du matériel transporté et du changement de charge lorsque le véhicule passe d'un client à un autre. Une approximation linéaire par morceaux est utilisée pour conserver une formulation de programmation linéaire en nombres entiers mixtes.Des méthodes hybrides basées sur des explorations de voisinages sont proposées pour traiter la minimisation du risque. Cela comprend l'étude des structures de voisinages et le développement d'un algorithme de descente à voisinages variables (VND) pour la recherche locale, ainsi qu'un mécanisme de perturbation des solutions. Une post-optimisation est appliquée pour améliorer la qualité des solutions obtenues.Enfin, deux approches, un algorithme basé sur la dominance multi-objectif et une méta-heuristique de type epsilon- contrainte, sont développées pour traiter la version multi-objectif. In this thesis work, the problem of applying active learning for a label efficient training of deep learning models is addressed. Firstly, in chapter one, the problem is introduced as well as the objectives and results of this thesis work. In chapter 2, a state of the art of active learning and deep learning models is presented with a particular emphasis on medical scenarios. In chapter three in active learning approach based on the expected gradient length is introduced for deep convolutional neural networks for applying in medical problems where data is scarce and train deep models could be unfeasible due to the lack of annotated samples. In chapter four an implemented framework for interactively training of deep learning models based on the previous discused algorithms is presented, where the active learning techniques improve the random selection strategy to classify between healthy eyes patches and patches that contain an early stage of diabetic retinopathy. Finally, in the last chapter, the conclusions of this thesis work are discussed as well as some promising lines of work for further research. En ésta tesis, se estudia el problema del entrenamiento eficiente de modelos de aprendizaje automático basados en redes neuronales profundas para el caso en el que se cuenta con pocos ejemplos anotados para su entrenamiento. Para esto se presentara una estrategia de aprendizaje activo la cual hace mas eficiente el aprendizaje de una representación profunda utilizando los ejemplos que mas cambios aportan al modelo. En el primer capítulo, se introduce el problema así como los objetivos y resultados de este trabajo de tesis. Una revisión de los trabajos recientes en el área de aprendizaje activo y modelos de aprendizaje profundo, con énfasis en escenarios médicos se presenta en el capítulo 2. En el capítulo 3, se presenta el enfoque propuesto de aprendizaje activo para modelos de aprendizaje profundos basado en la longitud esperada del gradiente, el cual resulta útil para la solución de problemas de imágenes médicas donde no se cuenta con la suficiente cantidad de ejemplos anotados. En el capítulo 4, un marco experimental es implementado para el entrenamiento de modelos basados en redes neuronales profundas, se muestra la aplicación de esta estrategía para clasificar parches de imágenes de fondo de ojo con pacientes sanos y en una etapa temprana de retinopatía diabética. Se muestra que el algoritmo propuesto mejora el desempeño del modelo comparandolo con la estrategía clásica de selección aleatoria de ejemplos. Finalmente en el último capítulo se discuten las concluciones de este trabajo y también se esbozan algunas lineas de trabajo prometedoras para el futuro. Maestría

La investigación que se aborda en este trabajo va orientada como primera medida a la construcción de un conjunto de datos usando la meteorología e índice de calidad del aire (ICA) producto de la recopilación durante cuatro años, de la monitorización de las estaciones del Sistemas de Vigilancia de calidad de aire de Valledupar; teniendo en cuenta este conjunto de datos, se busca entrenar y validar un modelo descriptivo, mediante la utilización de técnicas de clustering (Agrupamiento). Además se desarrolla un modelo predictivo, que estime el índice de calidad del aire, utilizando diferentes técnicas de minería de datos. Se comparan resultados mediante la utilización de las ANN’s y el método de regresión lineal, encontrando que las ANN’s se acoplan eficientemente a este conjunto de datos produciendo MAE de 10,19 para PM10 y 4,045 para CO, usando estos modelos como regresión; si se estiman los valores de ICA usando la concepción de series de tiempo con estos modelos se obtiene un MAE de 3.19 para PM10 y 4,47 para CO. Abstract The research that is approached in this work goes oriented like first measurement to the construction of a data set using the meteorology and air quality index (ICA) product of the compilation during four years, the monitoring of the system's surveillance stations of the air quality in Valledupar; considering east data set, one looks for to train and to validate a descriptive model, by means of the use of techniques of clustering (Group). In addition it is developed to a predictive model, that considers the ICA, using different techniques from data mining. They compare results by means of the use of ANN's and linear regression method, finding that ANN's efficiently is reconciled to this data set producing MAE of 10,19 by PM10 and 4,045 by CO, using these models like regression; if the values of ICA are considered using the conception of time series with these models it obtains a MAE of 3.19 by PM10 and 4,47 by CO. The exponential growth in the amount of available data has posed new challenges to re- searchers. Search on such amount of data is a difficult task which turns even harder when the data belongs to a specific domain which has its own terminology and requires some background knowledge. Traditional information retrieval systems are based on keywords. In this kind of systems the output for a given query is a ranking of the documents that match the keywords. This model works well in scenarios with few documents or if the system achieves a high perfor- mance ensuring that the first results contain the most relevant documents. However, in most cases the collections are huge and the retrieval results are an endless list of documents that must be scanned manually. This work proposes an information retrieval approach which incorporates domain specific knowledge from an ontology within the traditional information retrieval model in order to overcome some of its limitations. The domain knowledge is used to add semantic capabili- ties and to provide the user with an enriched interface which includes metadata about the retrieved results, thus facilitating its exploration and filtering El acelerado crecimiento en la cantidad de datos disponibles ha traído consigo nuevos retos para los investigadores. Buscar información en este gran volumen de datos, es una tarea difícil, que se torna aún más compleja cuando los datos pertenecen a un dominio especifíco el cual tiene su propia terminolgía y requiere un conocimiento previo. Los sistemas de búsqueda tradicionales son basados en palabras clave. En este tipo de siste- mas la respuesta a una consulta es dada en forma de una lista ordenada de documentos que contienen las palabras en la consulta. Este modelo funciona bien en escenarios en los cuales hay pocos documentos o si el sistema puede alcanzar una precisión muy alta garantizando que los primeros resultados contienen los documentos requeridos. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de los casos las colecciones de documentos son muy grandes y los resultados son una lista interminable de documentos los cuales deben ser explorados manualmente. Este trabajo propone una aproximación a la búsqueda de informacón, que incorpora conoci- miento del dominio proveniente de una ontología, dentro del modelo de búsqueda tradicional con el fin de superar algunas de sus limitaciones. El conocimiento del dominio es usado para adicionar capacidades semánticas y para proveer a los usuarios con una interfaz enriquecida la cual incluye meta-datos acerca de los resultados, facilitando su exploración y filtrado.
