Monitoring traits of cattle with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) could assist farmers in monitoring the status and health of their herd without actually visiting them. This feasibility study presents 3D methods to manually estimate body dimensions, such as height and weight, of individual Holstein Friesian cows with stereo RGB imagery, video and LiDAR data from UAVs. In total, 25 different cows over 3 years were monitored and 4,611 images, ∼10 videos, and a LiDAR dataset were analysed. The methods used were estimating weight by analysing 3D models made with RGB imagery and video from UAV, and estimating height and weight from LiDAR data. Software used in this study to process the UAV data and to extract 3D models are Agisoft Metashape Professional, CloudCompare, RiPROCESS 1.8.4 Riegl Software and Potree Desktop. LiDAR showed accurate results for estimating withers height (mean error 6cm) and weight (mean error 38 kg). Estimating weight with 3D models extracted with Structure for Motion (SfM) from overlapping RGB imagery resulted in less accurate results (mean error 62kg). The latter result improved to a mean error of 31 kg when three outliers were removed which exceeded twice the standard deviation. These results suggest that the use of UAVs is promising for estimating body dimensions in extensive beef production systems. The main challenge remains to record individual cows from all sides without too much movement or motion from the cow to enable 3D modelling. Another challenge was to decrease the mean error in weight estimations so that changes in body weight over time can be monitored. Future research should focus on improving the overall mean error of cattle weight estimation, finding solutions for moving cattle and shifting from manual to automated processing of UAV imagery into 3D models.

The Nature Base Map 2021 (Basiskaart Natuur 2021, or BKN2021) is a geodatabase of nature in the Netherlands. It is a raster database with a cell size of 25 x 25 metres. The database includes 13 land use classes, each with its own code and descriptor. The most important part of the database is the area of nature (natural and semi-natural ecosystems); according to the definition of nature used in BKN2021, the total area is 564,000 ha. This area includes the following land use classes: natural grassland (code 11), heath (30), forest (40), reed marsh (80), drift sand (90) and dune, beach and sand banks (91). Mede naar aanleiding van eerdere commotie over de afname van het bosare-aal in Nederland heeft het ministerie van LNV de bossenstrategie opgesteld, waarin gestreefd wordt naar 10% meer bos in 2030. Is daar al iets van te zien in de cijfers? In dit artikel bespreken we de stand van het bosareaal vanuit de nationale klimaatmonitoring van de sector landgebruik en bosbouw. Dit kan ook dienst doen als een ijkpunt voor de monitoring van de doelstelling voor de bossenstrategie.

Maar de ruimte die ooibos in het winterbed krijgt om tot ontwikkeling te komen, is door waterveiligheid sterk ingeperkt. Het Afwegingskader ooibossen is een online-instrument voor natuurplanners, natuurontwikkelaars en terreinbeheerders om de kansen voor ooibosontwikkeling in beeld te brengen. Het instrument laat zien waar potentiële ruimte is voor duurzame ooibosontwikkeling en welke ooibosgemeenschappen zijn te verwachten.

This report provides a complete methodological description of the Dutch National System for Greenhouse gas Reporting of the LULUCF sector for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The methodologies follow the IPCC 2006 guidelines for Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land-Uses (AFOLU).Based on these guidelines, this report provides detailed descriptions and motivations of the used methods, activity data, and emission factors for calculation of the emissions and removals as reported in the National Inventory Report (NIR). The structure of the report follows the structure for national inventory reports aslaid out in the appendix to Decision 24/CP.19 of the UNFCCC.

Bos beslaat 11% van het grondgebruik in Nederland. Het Nederlandse bos wordt gemiddeld ouder, meer gemengd en iets meer ongelijkjarig. De gemiddelde voorraad levend en dood hout blijft toenemen. De gemiddelde bijgroei is iets gedaald, bij ongeveer gelijkblijvende kap. Er is een duidelijke verschuiving gaande van naaldboomsoorten naar loofboomsoorten. Dat zijn resultaten uit de zesde bosinventarisatie (in opdracht van ministerie EZ).

The 2013 submission reports greenhouse gas emissions over the year 2011. It includes detailed description of the methodologies used to calculate activity data and emissions and it gives the full text of the NIR-II for KP-LULUCF, as well as a description of the table-by-table methodologies, choices and motivations. In 2011 afforestation and reforestation activities produced a sink of 458.66 Gg CO2 equivalents while deforestation caused an emission of 838.67 Gg CO2 equivalents. These values were based on changes in above-and belowground biomass, dead wood, litter and soil (mineral as well as organic), and agricultural lime application on deforested areas.

De BES eilanden behoren sinds oktober 2010 tot de Nederlandse gemeenten. Het opstellen van natuurbeleidsplannen behoren tot de nieuwe taken. Gedetailleerde hoogtekaarten zijn daarbij van belang. Met name voor Saba en St. Eustatius, met een zeer gevarieerd en complex reliëf, zijn accurate hoogtekaarten van groot belang.

De hoofddoelstelling van deze rapportage is het verkrijgen van de KwaliteitsStatus A voor het vervaardigen van de BN2004_v3.1 die vervaardigd is vanuit de Geodatabase Natuur (zie par. 2.9). Een belangrijk aspect hierbij is de vergelijkbaarheid van de nieuwe versie (3.1) met de oorspronkelijke versie BN2004_V2.0. De toegepaste techniek die gebruikt is bij de vervaardiging van beide bestanden verschilt namelijk. Om duidelijk te krijgen of het verschil in gebruikte techniek ook leidt tot verschil in resultaat is de het bestand BN2004_v2.1 aangemaakt. BN2004_v2.1 is vervaardigd vanuit de Geodatabase Natuur waarbij exact dezelfde bronbestanden en dezelfde combinatieregels gebruikt zijn als bij BN2004_v2.0. Dit was noodzakelijk omdat in BN2004_v3.1 meerdere wijzigingen zijn doorgevoerd ten opzichte van 2.0 waardoor deze niet direct vergelijkbaar was.

As a Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change the Netherlands has the obligation to design and make operational a system for reporting of greenhouse gases (GHG). This report contains a complete description of the Dutch greenhouse gas calculations and reporting of the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forests (LULUCF) sector used for the 2012 submission.

A major challenge is to develop a biodiversity observation system that is cost effective and applicable in any geographic region. Measuring and reliable reporting of trends and changes in biodiversity requires amongst others detailed and accurate land cover and habitat maps in a standard and comparable way. The objective of this paper is to assess the EODHaM (EO Data for Habitat Mapping) classification results for a Dutch case study. The EODHaM system was developed within the BIO_SOS (The BIOdiversity multi-SOurce monitoring System: from Space TO Species) project and contains the decision rules for each land cover and habitat class based on spectral and height information. One of the main findings is that canopy height models, as derived from LiDAR, in combination with very high resolution satellite imagery provides a powerful input for the EODHaM system for the purpose of generic land cover and habitat mapping for any location across the globe. The assessment of the EODHaM classification results based on field data showed an overall accuracy of 74% for the land cover classes as described according to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) taxonomy at level 3, while the overall accuracy was lower (69.0%) for the habitat map based on the General Habitat Category (GHC) system for habitat surveillance and monitoring. A GHC habitat class is determined for each mapping unit on the basis of the composition of the individual life forms and height measurements. The classification showed very good results for forest phanerophytes (FPH) when individual life forms were analyzed in terms of their percentage coverage estimates per mapping unit from the LCCS classification and validated with field surveys. Analysis for shrubby chamaephytes (SCH) showed less accurate results, but might also be due to less accurate field estimates of percentage coverage. Overall, the EODHaM classification results encouraged us to derive the heights of all vegetated objects in the Netherlands from LiDAR data, in preparation for new habitat classifications.
