A unique set of glasses was prepared to explore the substantial effect of nitrate modifiers on the alkaline oxyfluro phospho-silicate network with the nominal compositional configuration of 50P 2 O 5 +11SiO 2 +10MO+7CaO+7MgO+7BaF 2 +7SrF 2 +1Dy 2 O 3 (MO= Ni(NO 3) 2 , AgNO 3 , Cu(NO 3) 2 , Fe(NO 3) 3). The glass proportion was normalized without modifiers to observe the effect of nitrate modifiers. Modifiers were chosen from the 4th and 5th periods of the periodic table. The glasses were made using a customary melt-quench procedure. XRD measurements confirm the amorphous nature of the prepared samples and their functional groups, which the FTIR assessed. The absorption spectra were monitored in three major electromagnetic spectrum sections (UV-VIS, and NIR regions). Physical and structural properties were calculated and reported in the corresponding sections to evaluate the shielding quality of glass. In addition to that, attenuating factors of the EM wave through the alkaline oxyfluro phospho-silicate glasses in the gamma-ray region, including the mass-attenuation coefficient (MAC), mean free-path (MFP), half-value layer (HVL), and effective atomic-number (Z eff) were also calculated by PHY-X and the estimated values were discussed. Nitrates of silver and copper incorporation enhance the MAC, and similarly, the build-up factors such as EABF and EBF have been evaluated using the EXABCAL program. The values of EABF and EBF conclude that the glass with Ag(NO 3) 3 has the minimal secondary photon creation while interacting with high energy incident photons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exploration of reinforcing alkaline oxide modifiers into the nominal composition of 40P 2 O 5 +(30‒X)CaO+XMgO+9SiO 2 +6Sr 2 F+6LiF+6BaF+2.5Ce 2 O 3 +0.5Sm 2 O 3 (where X= 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 in wt%) has been performed. Oxides from the same alkaline group (CaO and MgO) have been chosen as a modifier. Glasses were made through the customary melt-quench technique. Successful glass formation was confirmed by XRD and functional group and compositional analysis via FTIR. Electronic structures of the proposed poly-component glasses are visualized by absorption spectra in the three prominent regions of the (electromagnetic) EM spectrum. Auxiliary physical, structural, and elastic properties were scrutinized for the approval of glasses as an obedient shielding material and evaluation of some other attenuating factors of EM wave by poly-component glasses in the gamma-ray region. The linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) was reported in the energy range of 0.284–1.333 MeV. The LAC results demonstrated that the interaction of the photons with the prepared specimens is high at lower photon energies and the shielding provided by the samples is relatively high when the energy level is low. The addition of MgO results in an improvement in the LAC values, and as a consequence, PS0Mg and PS25Mg had the lowest and highest LAC, respectively. The highest transmission factor values were reported for a thickness of 0.3 cm and equal to 0.87 at 0.284 MeV, 0.91 at 0.551 MeV, and 0.93 at 0.826 MeV (this is for PS0Mg sample). • Concentration dependent alkali modifiers were prepared via melt quench technique for shielding applications. • Physical, structural and elastic properties of all the prepared glasses were examined in detail. • PS25Mg glass exhibits higher LAC value, 1.333 MeV. • Radiation protection efficiency increases by increasing the wt% of MgO into the glass composition.
