The article presents abstracts on medical topics including modern management of haemorrhoids, patient experience of postoperative symptoms after ambulatory surgery, and day surgery in rural India.

The Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers (APAHC) convened its 5th National APAHC Conference in Boston March 3-5 2011. The conference and its theme, ' Preparing Psychologists for a Rapidly Changing Health Care Environment,' brought psychologists from academic health centers together to examine how psychology can adapt to and help lead health care efforts in the face of health care reform. This paper reports on the conference and introduces the special issue of JCPMS that is dedicated to the conference. The conference theme is framed in the historical context of the four national conferences that preceded it. In examining the focus and topics of the preceding conferences, recurrent themes are identified and progress in certain areas is highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As 2 years have passed since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), we had an examination of the measures taken at the perinatal medical and child centers during this period at 42 National University Hospital. The first questionnaire survey was conducted during March 17–25, 2022 and the second questionnaire survey was conducted during April 4–30, 2022. For the treatment of pregnant women with COVID‐19, a public health center‐coordinated triage system had been created and implemented in each region and prefecture. The issues related to the hospital management of pregnant women with COVID‐19 include the hindrances to the normal functioning of the center, the limited number of hospital beds and medical care systems as the beds were dedicated to patients with COVID‐19, and the problems associated with the mode of delivery. There were no set rules regarding the management of mothers and babies at delivery and thereafter. Initially, cesarean delivery was allowed in almost all cases to reduce the risk of exposure to medical staff. Furthermore, many institutions did not permit expressed breast milk feeding and direct breastfeeding during the quarantine period. The COVID‐19 pandemic has been created a shortage of healthcare delivery systems. It is expected that the emergence of new infectious diseases and pandemics will cause the same pressure on systems providing healthcare in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discussing errors and quality improvement is a tradition in academic health centers, particularly in morbidity and mortality conferences embedded in surgical training and during teaching rounds. Little, if any, attention is typically given to iatrogenic harms from structural racism, however. This article canvasses ways in which training programs recognize and address health care-generated harm from inequity and identifies areas for improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the discussion on bioethics journals dedicated special issues to race and racial injustice. Topics include eGFR helping in determining candidacy for kidney transplants showing disproportionately reducing the numbers of Black individuals receiving the transplants; and describing the roles of education, mentoring, and professional associations in addressing inequity.

Objectives: Little is known about what shapes the choice of employment location in a competitive surgical specialty like otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. This study aimed to identify factors important in determining practice location among Canadian otolaryngologists Methods: An online survey was distributed nationally to active members of the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. The survey collected data on general demographics, current practice description, training location, factors deemed important in practice location decisions, and job satisfaction. Results: A total of 122 survey responses were collected, with a similar proportion of participants in academic versus community practice. The majority of respondents (73 per cent) practised in the same province as their residency training. Participants identified job vacancy, colleague interaction, spouse opinion and hospital services as important in the decision of practice location. Conclusion: Key determinants of practice location among Canadian otolaryngologists include job vacancies, spouse opinion, and colleague interactions. This article is based on the opening presentation by the author to the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers' 5th National Conference, 'Preparing Psychologists for a Rapidly Changing Healthcare Environment' held in March, 2011. Reviewing the patient protection and affordable care act (ACA), that presentation was designed to set the stage for several days of symposia and discussions anticipating upcoming changes to the healthcare system. This article reviews the ACA; general trends that have impacted healthcare reform; the implications of the Act for psychology's workforce including the growing focus on interprofessional education, training, and practice, challenges to address in order to prepare for psychology's future; and recommendations for advocating for psychology's future as a healthcare profession. Information on the topics discussed at the 2013 Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM) Annual Winter Meeting is presented. These include creating a strong partnership with the academic medical center (AMC), improving quality and reducing costs for patients, employers, and payers, and improving the family medicine practice. The results of the annual member survey on how DFMs meet the challenge of health system change is also discussed.
