The accountant in private practice needs to develop marketing skills. Strategies should be developed to promote oneself and the practice. Attendance at professional meetings helps to develop contacts. Offering oneself as a public speaker where clients may meet provides a great deal of exposure. Taking or giving seminars, especially among members of the 'baby boom' generation, again provides exposure. Press contacts are invaluable. Writing articles in publications that clients may read is very good advertising, as are books. Desktop publishing now makes newsletters a cottage industry; allowing self-promotion while simultaneously supplying the reader with information.
