Historical information about sturgeon fisheries along the Lower Danube is reviewed. Most of data come from manuscripts or diaries left by travellers. At the beginning of the 16th century, many of those who travelled to the Balkans and reached Dobrogea, Moldova, Wallachia or Transylvania described the local customs of people in these areas, including fisheries along the Danube River, noticing the richness of the fish and especially sturgeons. The species of the family Acipenseridae impressed with their unusual size but also with the special methods used by fishermen for capturing these large fish. The travellers wrote about the large number of captured sturgeons, methods of preparation of caviar, storing of caviar and fish and the places where fishermen merchandised their fish products.
