During the last decades, there has been quite extensive research held in the field of acoustic phonetics in Latvia, although acoustic description of the Latvian sound system is not complete yet. Until now the main attention has been focused on vowels and obstruents, while sonorants (that include nasals) still remain the least-studied sound group of the Latvian language. In the present paper, acoustic characteristics of the syllable-onset Latvian nasals [m, n, ņ, ņ] are provided and the acquired data are compared with the results of the pilot study carried out by J. Grigorjevs in 2011-2012. The material consists of the closed symmetric CVC syllables, where C is one of the Latvian nasals and V is one of the vowels. The nasals are characterized using two parameters - frequency values of the oral zero and values obtained from locus equations. The results of the survey fairly agree with those of the study conducted by J. Grigorjevs and show the same overall trends: • frequency values of the oral zero decrease in the following order: [n] > [n] > [n] > [m]; • slope values decrease in the following order: [ņ] > [m] > [n] > [ņ]; • y-intercept values decrease in the following order: [ņ] > [n] > [m] > [ņ]. According to the results the Latvian nasals can be distinguished both by the frequency of the oral zero and by the locus equations, although the perceptual significance of these acoustic cues should be verified by perception tests.
