Background: Rates of depression are increasing among adolescents. A novel way to reduce depression is by improving sleep. We evaluated whether an app‐based intervention for insomnia improved sleep and depression, and whether changes in insomnia mediated changes in depression. Methods: We conducted a 2‐arm single‐blind randomised controlled trial at the Black Dog Institute in Australia. Adolescents 12–16 years experiencing insomnia symptoms were randomly allocated to receive Sleep Ninja, an app‐delivered cognitive behavioural therapy program for insomnia, or to an active control group involving weekly text message sleep tips. Assessments took place at baseline, 6 weeks (post‐intervention) and 14 weeks (post‐baseline). Co‐primary outcomes were symptoms of insomnia and depression at post‐intervention (primary endpoint). Intent‐to‐treat analyses were conducted. The trial is registered with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, number ACTRN12619001462178. Results: Between October 25, 2019, and September 6, 2020, 264 participants were randomised to receive Sleep Ninja (n = 131) or to the control group (n = 133). Relative to the control group, those allocated to the intervention reported a greater reduction in insomnia symptoms at 6 weeks (95% CI: −2.96 to −0.41, d =.41) and 14 weeks (95% CI: −3.34 to −0.19, d =.39), and a greater reduction in depression symptoms at 6 weeks (95% CI: −3.46 to −0.56, d =.28) but not 14 weeks (p < 1). Change in insomnia mediated change in depression. No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: An app‐delivered program for insomnia could be a practical, non‐stigmatising and scalable way to reduce symptoms of insomnia and depression among adolescents experiencing difficulties getting enough good quality sleep. Objective: Parents are important facilitators of mental healthcare for their adolescent children. An online, school-based, mental health service may assist parents in gaining access to care. This study explored parental attitudes towards this new type of service provision. Method: The study was undertaken in July and August 2016. Semi-structured interviews were used to understand parents' attitudes towards a proposed online, school-based service called Smooth Sailing. Themes were identified through thematic analysis. Fourteen parents were interviewed. Results: Seven key themes emerged. Parents' own experiences seeking help and awareness of mental health services, their perceived prevalence of mental health issues in youth and the appropriateness of online and school-delivered care, the desire to be involved in their child's care, alongside concerns about stigma, service trust and credibility, and the availability of face-to-face support, were all found to influence parents' attitudes to the proposed service. Discussion: This study confirmed that parents have both positive and negative attitudes towards online, school-based mental health service provision. By understanding these attitudes, service providers are better equipped to develop strategies to mitigate concerns and promote engagement. Background: Mental health problems are common among youth in high school, and school counselors play a key role in the provision of school-based mental health care. However, school counselors occupy a multispecialist position that makes it difficult for them to provide care to all of those who are in need in a timely manner. A Web-based mental health service that offers screening, psychological therapy, and monitoring may help counselors manage time and provide additional oversight to students. However, for such a model to be implemented successfully, school counselors' attitudes toward Web-based resources and services need to be measured. Objective: This study aimed to examine the acceptability of a proposed Web-based mental health service, the feasibility of providing this type of service in the school context, and the barriers and facilitators to implementation as perceived by school counselors in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Methods: This study utilized an online cross-sectional survey to measure school counselors' perspectives. Results: A total of 145 school counselors completed the survey. Overall, 82.1% (119/145) thought that the proposed service would be helpful to students. One-third reported that they would recommend the proposed model, with the remaining reporting potential concerns. Years of experience was the only background factor associated with a higher level of comfort with the proposed service (P=.048). Personal beliefs, knowledge and awareness, Internet accessibility, privacy, and confidentiality were found to influence, both positively and negatively, the likelihood of school counselors implementing a Web-based school mental health service. Conclusions: The findings of this study confirmed that greater support and resources are needed to facilitate what is already a challenging and emotionally demanding role for school counselors. Although the school counselors in this study were open to the proposed service model, successful implementation will require that the issues outlined are carefully addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
