Several epidemiologic studies have reported that dietary acid load (DAL) is associated with metabolic profiles; however, to our knowledge, the relationship of this dietary pattern with resting metabolic rate (RMR) among obese and overweight females remains unreported. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association of DAL, RMR and metabolic components among overweight and obese adult women.This cross-sectional study was conducted on 375 Iranian adult women, aged 18-48 years. DAL indices were calculated by using a validated 147-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Biochemical and anthropometric measures were assessed using standard methods. An impedance fat analyzer was used to obtain the body composition and an indirect calorimeter was used to assess the RMR.It was observed that after correction for potential confounders, net endogenous acid production (NEAP) and potential renal acid load (PRAL) scores were inversely associated with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P 0.05). NEAP index was inversely associated with RMR (β = -0.44, 95% confidence interval; CI = -1.21 to 0.32, P = 0.02), and positively associated with waist circumference (WC) (β = 1.04, 95% CI = -1.05 to 4.45, P = 0.06) and waist to hip ratio (WHR) (β = 0.01, 95% CI = -0.01 to 0.04, P = 0.04), such that subjects with higher scores in NEAP had lower RMR and higher WC and WHR. We also observed that NEAP (β = -0.44, 95% CI = -1.21 to 0.32, P = 0.02) was significance and PRAL (β = -0.23, 95% CI = -1.50 to 0.47 P = 0.07) was marginally associated with RMR.The results of the present study suggested that higher DAL scores may be negatively associated with lower RMR, while directly associated with greater WC, WHR, DBP, and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR).

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease associated and oxidative stress. The critical role of a dietary antioxidant in increasing the antioxidant defense system is undeniable and makes the assessment of the potential link between dietary antioxidants and diseases informative. Given the limited available data on dietary antioxidants, this study aimed to evaluate the association between DTAC and the risk of RA.This case-control study was carried out on 100 patients with RA and 197 healthy individuals aged 19-69 years. Data on dietary intake were collected using a validated 168-items quantitative food frequency questionnaire. DTAC was calculated based on the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), the ability of dietary antioxidants to reduce ferric to ferrous ions, presented in mmol per 100 g of foods (mmol/100 g). To find the association between DTAC and risk of RA, binary logistic regression adjusted for potential confounders was used.The mean age of the study participants was 49.26 and 40.88 years in the case and control groups, respectively. Participants in the top tertile of DTAC were less likely to have RA in the crude model (OR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.18-0.64; P-trend: 0.001). Such that, when multiple potential confounders were controlled, the association remained significant in the full adjustment model (OR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.10-0.76; P-trend: 0.001).The finding indicates a significant inverse association between DTAC and the risk of RA, suggesting that promoting a naturally elevated antioxidant capacity might help prevent the development of RA. Further prospective studies are required to confirm these findings.

Purpose: To determine the relationship between gastrointestinal hormones (leptin, glucagon-like peptide-1), ghrelin, cholecystokinin, peptide YY, morphological characteristics, and physical performances in elite soccer players. Methods: Q2 Twenty-two elite male soccer players (age = 23.1 [2.7] y, height = 177.0 [0.1] cm, weight = 70.2 [2.9] kg, body mass index = 22.1 [1.8] kg/m2) completed 3-day food records each week during the 5-week training period. Blood samples were drawn after an overnight fast before and after preseason training to assess gastrointestinal hormones (leptin, glucagon-like peptide-1, ghrelin, cholecystokinin, and peptide YY). Continuous analysis of the training load was used during the training period. Preintervention and postintervention tests assessed jumping (countermovement jump), sprinting (10, 20, and 30 m), and endurance fitness (the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 [YYIRT1]) levels. Results: Preseason training decreased body mass index (P = .001; effect size [ES] = 0.183) and body fat percentage (P = .001; ES = 0.516). There were increases in countermovement jump (P = .032; ES = 0.215), 20- (P = .016; ES = 0.195) and 30-m sprints (P = .001; ES = 0.188), and YYIRT1 performance (P = .001; ES = 0.9). Levels of cholecystokinin, peptide YY, and ghrelin did not change during preseason training, although changes in leptin (P = .001; ES = 0.41) and glucagon-like peptide-1 levels (P = .039; ES = 0.606) were recorded. Leptinemia correlated with anthropometric parameters (body mass index, r = .77, P = .001; percentage of body fat,r = .67, P = .006) and the total distance covered during the YYIRT1 (r = −.54; P = .03). Conclusion: Changes in morphological parameters and physical performance in elite-level male soccer players are related to variations in selected gastrointestinal hormones.

Direct and indirect evidence were combined in this systematic-review and network meta-analysis (NMA) to assess and compare the effect of nutritional supplements on glycemic control, and rank the supplements accordingly.PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched up to April 2021. We included randomized controlled trials that investigated the effect of vitamins D, C, and E, magnesium, zinc, calcium, selenium, and omega-3 on at least one glycemic marker, including glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood sugar (FBS), homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), HOMA-B, and insulin, in adults with type 2 diabetes. To estimate effectiveness of supplements, a random-effects NMA in the Bayesian framework was applied. To assess risk of bias, Cochrane Collaboration Tool was used.Analysis of 178 studies indicated that zinc, vitamin D, omega-3, vitamin C, and vitamin E were effective in reducing HbA1c with low certainty. For reduction of FBS, zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin C, and for HOMA-IR, vitamin D were effective with low certainty. None of the supplements were effective in the reduction of insulin and HOMA-B with low certainty. After excluding poor-quality studies, only vitamin D was significantly effective in reducing all of the markers. Consistently, when the analysis was restricted to studies with a duration of ≥12-weeks, vitamin D reduced HbA1c, FBS, and HOMA-IR.Vitamin D supplementation was more effective compared to other supplements in improving HbA1c, FBS, and HOMA-IR, albeit with low certainty of evidence.
