- Abstract
The reduction of salivary flow is generically explained by multifactorial etiology and there is no consensus on the most affected human groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of medication use on salivary changes in young adults. Thirty-five university students participated in the study, who answered a questionnaire and had individual collection of saliva by the technique of stimulated sialometry. Demographic and quali quantitative data on salivation were evaluated. There was a prevalence of the female, young and white population, with a low frequency of systemic diseases and smoking. Salivary flow, color, turbidity and pH did not show significant differences. However, the presence of xerostomia and hyposalivation in the group of medication users corresponded to double the participants without medication. Hypoglycemic, antidepressant, anti-hypothyroid and contraceptive medications exhibited significant intergroup differences, with higher prevalence of contraceptive users, an outcome previously unheard of in the scientific literature. In-depth studies on the subject deserve to be developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
