The Parties that have signed the Kyoto Protocol must reduce global emissions of Greenhouse Gasses (GHG) during the First Commitment Period (2008 - 2012) by at least 5% with respect to 1990. This share is 6.5% for Italy. The Kyoto Protocol lays down some measures for reducing GHG emissions, which include actions in agriculture and forestry. it will thus be possible to take emissions and absorptions resulting from land use changes into account in the National Balances. Given the widespread forests in Italy, it is very important to have an assessment of the aptitude of this sector to act as a carbon sink. In this study we analysed the variation of forestland cover in a mountain area of the Veneto Region (NE Italy). The analysis was done by comparing aerial photos taken in 1991 with orthophotos reported to 2003, by photointerpretation of points with casual distribution on sample areas, according to a stratified sampling. We estimated a statistically relevant increment of about 0.095% of forest land only up to 1500 m compared to the estimated forest cover for 1990 (about 42 ha), underlining how this low increase is mainly due to forest management. The second step was to estimate the fixed carbon in the areas where forests increased. This was achieved by collecting biometrical data in the field, and then using allometric functions. The annual carbon sink was estimated as 0.69 Mg ha-1 year-1. Comparing these results with previous studies done in the pre-alpine region we estimate the annual increment of the forest area in the whole Veneto region to be about 409.94 ha and that the total carbon sink is about 282.86 Mg C year-1. A method for estimating carbon sink in afforestation/reforestation areas is proposed that could also be applied to other sites in Italy.

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar as características morfométricas do padrão de drenagem e do relevo em microbacias hidrográficas de 2ª ordem de magnitude, em Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro e Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo, com vistas ao planejamento agroambiental da Bacia Hidrográfica do Córrego Rico, município de Jaboticabal, SP. O estudo foi baseado em fotografias aéreas, pancromáticas, verticais na escala 1:35.000 da região administrativa de Ribeirão Preto. Com técnicas de fotointerpretação, foram traçadas a rede de drenagem e respectivas microbacias hidrográficas, onde as variáveis selecionadas foram determinadas. As classes de risco de degradação, resultando no uso potencial do solo, foram determinadas de acordo com o coeficiente de rugosidade. As características do padrão de drenagem e do relevo repercutiram no comportamento hidrológico e litológico das microbacias hidrográficas, possibilitando a diferenciação entre as unidades de solos. A densidade de drenagem e a amplitude altimétrica foram as características que mais contribuíram para o poder discriminatório na relação solo-superfície. Na análise conjunta do potencial de uso do solo, verificou-se, principalmente, adequação para agricultura nos Latossolos e pecuária e, ou, reflorestamento nos Argissolos. The analysis of quantitative geomorphologic characteristics is concerned with understanding the soil-landscape relationships, resultant of erosive processes on diverse structures and lithologies. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the morphometric characteristics of the drainage pattern and relief in second order watersheds of the Córrego Rico Watershed in Jaboticabal County, São Paulo State, Brazil, covered by Oxisols and Ultisols. The study was based on vertical aerial photographs in a 1:35.000 scale. Photointerpretation techniques were used to draw the drainage network and respective hydrographic basins, where selected variables were evaluated. Classes of degradation risk, which determined the potential soil were established according to the roughness coefficient. The drainage pattern and relief characteristics strongly influenced the hydrology and geology of the hydrographic basins, and allowed the differentiation between soil units. Drainage density and relief were the characteristics that most contributed to the discrimination of the watersheds regarding soil-landscape relationship. A joint analysis of the potential soil use for microbasins indicated Oxisols for agricultural use and Ultisols for pasture and forestation. In this study we have tried to link a quantitative inventory of deforestation to possible factors driving forest clearing, like accessibility and soil quality. The Study Area covered 395 km2 in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica. Basic information came from aerial photographs taken in 1952, 1960, 1971 to 73, 1981 and 1984. Photo interpretations were digitized and processed with the help of a monoplotting programme. Three phases in deforestation were distinguished: 1 The period before 1960, characterized by a gradual increase in the rate of deforestation, with preferential clearing along rivers and on fertile soils. 2 The period 1960-1972. This period shows an increased clearing rate caused by a new centre of colonization, Cariari. Furthermore, banana plantations entered the area and main roads were constructed. Deforestation took place preferentially along roads and on fertile soils. 3 In the period 1972-1984 the remaining forest ‘islands’ were cleared at an accelerated rate. This was because only small areas of forest were left by this period. Also between 1972 and 1984 the fertile soils were cleared most rapidly.
