1. Evaluating Materials About Africa for Children.

Abstract

Choosing texts, media, and literature about Africa is a difficult task for school librarians who have not studied Africa in detail; however it is possible to evaluate the available materials on the basis of several important criteria. These include the authority of the author, the dates of preparation and publication, and the accuracy of illustrations. Blatant biases can be easily recognized, but attention should also be paid to the more subtle forms of bias in the use of stereotypes or evaluative labels to typify whole groups. Over half of the children's materials on Africa appear in publishers' series, most of which use a European conceptual framework in the discussion of economics, history, religion, and social life. Such a viewpoint distorts the presentation of African life and invites negative comparisons to western life. African materials should present the African perspective and values and avoid overgeneralization about this very diverse continent. Many of the available books are fiction or folklore for which there are additional considerations: the authenticity and provenance of the tale; and human dignity in characterization, dialog, and plot. Abstract

These annotated bibliographies were originally developed for in-service workshops for elementary and secondary school teachers who are teaching about Africa or interested in developing curricula about Africa. The bibliographies are quite selective. They include only materials which are current, relatively accurate and unbiased, and give an authentic and representative depiction of Africa. The following areas are covered: (1) selected sources for teaching about Africa; (2) children's books for teaching about Africa, specifically for kindergarten-grade two and grades 4-6; (3) resources for teaching sixth graders about Bushmen and West African cultures; (4) children's books and audio-visual resources for supplementing a seventh grade curriculum on Africa; (5) resources for teaching about African art, music, dance and literature; (6) African recipes for American children to cook; (7) biographies of famous African men and women; (8) materials aimed at debunking myths about Africa; (9) reference works on Africa for children; and (10) children's books on Africa published from 1973-1975. 3. Children's Books on Africa and Their Authors: An Annotated Bibliography.

Abstract

This annotated bibliography of children's books about Africa cites more than 800 entries written in English and published in the United States, Africa, and Europe. The books (designed for children in early elementary school through young adulthood) are evaluated in terms of the validity of the perspective of Africa which they present. Both illustrations and contents of the books are appraised for the amount and accuracy of information on Africa, and their contribution to an understanding of African culture and history for young readers. The bibliography is arranged by author. A significant portion consists of information on the authors' backgrounds, principal occupations, and qualifications. Some comparisons between various books related to the same subjects are made. Geography, name, series, subject, title and tribal indexes are provided. (ED)

Abstract

Children's fiction about Africa which has been either written in English or translated from other languages into English is discussed in this book. Covered are 542 novels and volumes of short stories written for children that were collected and read by the author before July 1977. Part I outlines several major elements of the cultural background within which children's fiction about Africa is created and read. These elements include the intellectual climate, historical development, publishing facilities, authors, and illustrators of children's fiction about Africa. Part II outlines general characteristics of dominant themes in children's fiction about Africa, discusses the fiction in relation to the background of selected authors, and examines the content of the fiction from Euro-American and African cultural and historical perspectives. The following are the major themes discussed: local-life stories, adventure stories, animal stories and safari stories, historical fiction, fantasy, and school stories. A bibliography lists general works on the subject and provides an extensive listing of American, European, and African children's fiction about Africa. The series in which the books are included, the languages from which books have been translated, and the countries in which the stories take place are indicated at the end of each bibliographic entry. Abstract

This article presents information related to an African Literature on film. In the article "African Literature on Film," the author has outlined reasons for studying African literature on film and called attention to the lack of bibliographic control over the literature on African films and filmmakers. During the three years since that essay was published the author has tried to obtain preliminary bibliographic control over the vast scattered literature on sub-Sahara African films and filmmakers. "Sub-Saharan African Films and Filmmakers: A Preliminary Bibliography," of more than sixteen hundred entities will soon be published.
