The Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives with the assistance of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) completed a project on integrated pest control for secondary crops in Thailand from 1985 to 1988. The project accomplished its four objectives: (1) to develop integrated pest control (IPC) programs for cotton, sugarcane, and vegetables; (2) to train Ministry staff on these three crops in developing IPC; (3) to transfer IPC technology to the farmers of these crops; and (4) to assess the economic benefit of using IPC. As a result, the researchers and extension specialists developed expertise in IPC and farmers became more interested in and capable of practicing IPC. The fields under IPC yielded profits 87, 33, 145, and 205% higher than under no IPC for cotton, sugarcane, crucifers, and onion, respectively. After the termination of the project, IPC was expanded to other crops such as asparagus, chili, tomato, Chinese radish, and grapes. Then IPC was declared the national policy for pest control by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
