Restrictions on soil water supply can dramatically reduce crop yields by affecting the growth and development of plants. For this reason, screening tools that can detect crop water stress early have been long investigated, with canopy temperature (CT) being widely used for this purpose. In this study, we investigated the relationship between canopy temperature retrieved from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) based thermal imagery with soil and plant attributes, using a rainfed maize field as the area of study. The flight mission was conducted during the late vegetative stage and at solar noon, when a considerable soil water deficit was detected according to the soil water balance model used. While the images were being taken, soil sampling was conducted to determine the soil water content across the field. The sampling results demonstrated the spatial variability of soil water status, with soil volumetric water content (SVWC) presenting 10.4% of variation and values close to the permanent wilting point (PWP), reflecting CT readings that ranged from 32.8 to 40.6 °C among the sampling locations. Although CT correlated well with many of the physical attributes of soil that are related to water dynamics, the simple linear regression between CT and soil water content variables yielded coefficients of determination (R2) = 0.42, indicating that CT alone might not be sufficient to predict soil water status. Nonetheless, when CT was combined with some soil physical attributes in a multiple linear regression, the prediction capacity was significantly increased, achieving an R2 value = 0.88. This result indicates the potential use of CT along with certain soil physical variables to predict crop water status, making it a useful tool for studies exploring the spatial variability of in-season drought stress.

ABSTRACT: Key performance indicators (KPI) are essential to decision-making in an organization, but the approach to analysis and composition used in the formulation of the KPIs can lead to errors. Analysis based only on averages does not allow for discriminating between variations that are natural to the process or special cases which require investigation. The use of control charts can identify this differentiation. However, when several charts are presented encompassing different measurement units and scales, systemic interpretation can be impaired. To assist in this interpretation, this research study aimed at proposing a method to facilitate the analysis of control charts when multiple indicators are employed in the monitoring of agricultural operations. Based on the data obtained over 26 weeks from a mechanized sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) harvesting front, six indicators were defined and analyzed through individual control charts and, systemically, through a standardized group control chart. Results show that the points identified as being outside the control zone (special causes of variation) according to the standardized group control chart were the same as those identified by the six individual charts, which demonstrates the potential of this method to summarize the information with no loss of quality of analysis.

The amount of energy required to produce a commodity or to supply a service varies from one production system to another and consequently giving rise to differing levels of environmental efficiency. Moreover, since energy prices have been continuously increasing over time, this energy amount may be a factor that has economic worth. Biomass production has a variety of end-products such as food, energy, and fiber; thus, taking into account the similarity in end-product of different crops (e.g.: sunflower, peanuts, or soybean for oil) it is possible to evaluate which crops require less energy per functional unit, such as starch, oil, and protein. This information can be used in decision-making about policies for food safety or bioenergy. In this study, 23 crops were evaluated allowing for a comparison in terms of energy embodied per functional unit. Crops were grouped as follows: starch, oil, horticultural, perennial and fiber, to provide for a deeper analysis of alternatives for the groups, and subsidize further studies comparing conventional and alternative production systems such as organic or genetically modified organisms, in terms of energy. The best energy balance observed was whole sugarcane (juice, bagasse and straw) with a surplus of 268 GJ ha−1 yr−1; palm shows the highest energy return on investment with a ratio of approximately 30:1. For carbohydrates and protein production, cassava and soybean, respectively, emerged as the crops offering the greatest energy savings in the production of these functional foods.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, com um sensor ótico ativo, o comportamento do índice de vegetação por diferença normalizada (NDVI - "normalized difference vegetation index"), nas culturas de trigo, triticale, cevada e milho. Cinco experimentos foram conduzidos no Paraná e São Paulo, com variação de classes de solo, doses e fontes de N, e variedades de trigo. As seguintes variáveis foram avaliadas: NDVI, teor de N foliar, matéria seca e produtividade das culturas. Análises de regressões foram realizadas entre as doses de N aplicadas e NDVI, teor de N foliar, matéria seca e produtividade. Análises de correlação entre as variáveis foram realizadas. O trigo, triticale e cevada apresentaram resposta às aplicações de doses crescentes de N, pelo aumento nas leituras do NDVI, no teor de N foliar e na produtividade. Medido pelo sensor ótico ativo utilizado, o NDVI apresenta alto potencial para manejo do N nas culturas do trigo, triticale e cevada, e baixo potencial para a cultura do milho. Há interferência das variedades de trigo nas leituras do sensor ótico ativo.The objective of this work was to evaluate the behavior of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), with an active optical sensor, in wheat, triticale, barley and corn crops. Experiments were conducted in Paraná and São Paulo, comparing different soil classes, N rates and sources, and wheat varieties. The following variables were determined: NDVI, N foliar content, dry mass and crop yield. Regression analyses were performed between NDVI and applied N rates, N foliar content, dry mass and yield. Correlation analyses among the variables were performed. Wheat, triticale and barley crops showed response to increasing N rates by the increase in the NDVI readings, to N foliar content and to yield. Measured by the used active optical sensor the NDVI shows high potential for N management wheat, triticale and barley crops, and low potential for corn crops. There is interference of wheat varieties in the active optical sensor's readings.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi mapear e avaliar a variabilidade espacial da condutividade elétrica do solo (CE), obtida por meio de sensor de contato de campo, num Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico, sob plantio direto de grãos, e relacionar a CE com os teores de argila medidos pelo método do densímetro, em amostras georreferenciadas de solo. As amostras foram coletadas numa área de 13 ha, por meio de uma grade de 40x40 m e de grades de 20x20 m, 10x10 m e 5x5 m. A continuidade espacial da CE e do teor de argila foi modelada com o uso de semivariogramas. A CE variou de 1,9 a 13,7 mS m-1, com valor médio de 5,2 mS m-1 e coeficiente de variação de 48%. O mapa interpolado mostrou tendência de aumento da CE com o aumento dos teores de argila. Os coeficientes de determinação foram de 0,78 e 0,77 entre CE e teor de argila, camadas 0-5 e 5-10 cm, respectivamente. O mapa da CE reflete suficientemente a variação espacial dos teores de argila para uso na delimitação de zonas de manejo.The objective of this work was to map and evaluate the spatial variability of the soil electrical conductivity (EC), measured with a contact sensor in a Rhodic Ferralsol under no till grain crops. The values of soil EC were related to soil clay content, measured by the densimetric method in georreferenced samples collected at 0-5 and 5-10 cm, in a 13 ha field. Soil samples were collected using a 40x40 m grid and densed grids of 20, 10 and 5 m spacing. Spatial continuity of EC and of clay content was modeled using semivariograms. Soil EC ranged from 1.9 to 13.7 mS m-1 with an average of 5.2 mS m-1 and coefficient of variation of 48%. The kriged map of soil EC pointed out a tendency of increase where clay levels were higher. Determination coefficients between soil EC and clay content were 0.78 and 0.77, respectively for 0-5 and 5-10 cm depth. The EC map adequatly reflects the spatial variation in soil texture for establishing the limits of management zones.

A região dos Campos Gerais, no Paraná, é pioneira na utilização de novas tecnologias e apresenta desempenho superior em rendimento de grãos. O sistema Plantio Direto é uma realidade, em que acurácia e precisão no processo de semeadura são de grande importância. Sendo assim, estudou-se o processo de semeadura de milho sob o sistema Plantio Direto na região dos Campos Gerais, avaliando-se a pressão populacional de plantas em 48 propriedades agrícolas. A área experimental era formada por 4 ou 5 linhas de semeadura, onde foram avaliados 3m por linha, medindo-se espaçamentos entre plantas e entre linhas. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre as linhas de semeadura em 42 áreas, sendo que o coeficiente de variação médio ficou em torno de 33%. Não se encontrou nenhuma área com média menor do que 50.000 plantas ha-1, valor mínimo para os híbridos avaliados. Pôde-se concluir que o processo de semeadura da região é eficiente quanto ao número de plantas por área. Já a grande variabilidade encontrada na distribuição de plantas na linha de semeadura sugere a necessidade de ações de pesquisa e extensão junto aos produtores.
