Tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) is an annual small grain, panicle bearing, C4 cereal crop native to Ethiopia, where it is a major staple food. The objectives of the present study were to characterize the responses of two tef genotypes to escalating phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) levels and to determine an optimum range for P and K at which tef performance is maximized. Two experiments were carried out in the Gilat Research Station, each testing two different genotypes of tef (405B and 406W), one experiment in pots in controlled conditions, and the other in the field. In both experiments, the highest grain yield increased until 6 mg L−1 P, and declined at 12 mg L−1 P. The decline was precipitous and significant in the pot experiment, and gradual and statistically insignificant in the field experiment. In the pots experiment, the grain yield increased until 40 mg L−1 K, with no significant decrease thereafter. The effect of K concentration was only seen in the grain yield and not in the size of the other plant organs. In the field experiment, grain yield was highest at 80 mg L−1 K, but it was not statistically different from 40 mg L−1. The effect of K on growth was only apparent at maturity and not at flowering.

Tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) is a C4 annual cereal, common in Ethiopia, where it was presumably domesticated. Worldwide interest in tef cultivation and consumption has considerably increased in the last few decades because it is a gluten-free grain with high nutritional value. Here we report on the genetic diversity and heritability in a tef germplasm collection characterized in Israel. A total of 408 accessions of tef held in the Israel Gene Bank were grown in 2015 under common garden (screen-house) conditions for propagation and initial phenotyping. A diversity panel, consisting of 273 accessions representing the entire collection's range of phenotypic diversity, was assembled and evaluated in small field plots in 2016. Further evaluation was conducted in 2017, in single-plant field plots (to eliminate admixtures). A representative plant (plot) was selected from each accession grown in 2017 and its single seed descent progenies where grown in 2018 in single-plant plots. The collection exhibited a wide diversity for each of the measured phenotypic traits, across all four environments. High grain yield was associated in most cases with early flowering time, whereas higher biomass was associated with late flowering. Heritability estimates, calculated based on the 2017, 2018 data, varied between 0.11 for plant biomass and 0.75 for 1000 grain weight. This study shows that tef can successfully grow and produce under irrigated Mediterranean conditions. The wide diversity available in our germplasm collection can provide the foundations for breeding new tef cultivars that are better adapted to these conditions.

Tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) is a panicle-bearing cereal crop plant, originating from and grown mainly in Ethiopia. Tef yields highly nutritious gluten-free grain as well as high-quality forage, therefore, interest is rising regarding tef cultivation for grain and forage outside Ethiopia. Lodging is a major factor limiting tef quality and yield, with losses estimated at 30%&ndash, 35% and presumably higher under mechanical harvest. Studies in other cereal crops suggested that lowering plant density would lead to sturdier plants less prone to lodging. In this work, we reported on the effects of sowing rate on lodging, lodging-related traits, and productivity of tef under irrigated conditions. Four tef genotypes were grown under irrigation across two years at three sowing rates: low (3 kg/ha), medium (6 kg/ha), and high (common, 9 kg/ha). Grain yield and biomass did not differ significantly among sowing rates. The visually assessed lodging index (LI) increased as the season progressed, with the lowest values recorded under low sowing density. A significant difference in LI values among the tested genotypes suggested potential for crop improvement. Aerial RGB images of the field taken by an unmanned aerial vehicle twice during the second season produced a high-resolution crop surface model, which was used to assess lodging. Aerial-based LI values were significantly correlated with the ground-based ones and exhibited better capacity to identify minor differences in lodging. Among the morphological traits assessed, crown diameter, crown root number, and crown root diameter were significantly affected by sowing rate and genotype and were correlated with LI values. In summary, this study demonstrated for the first time the feasibility of tef production under irrigated Mediterranean conditions and the potential of a reduced sowing rate as a remedy for lodging.

BAPGEAPSISUPDATINRA; Productivity of grain crops in semi-arid environments is often affected by drought, which is likely to increase due to predicted climate changes. Wild pea (Pisum fulvum, Pf) accessions sampled across its ecological amplitude in Israel (350-850 mm annual precipitation) were used to assess the genetic diversity for drought responses. We hypothesized that native species evolving under east Mediterranean climate carry adaptive traits to cope with drought stress. Accessions were classified according to SNP variation pattern and habitat ecogeographic parameters. Significant differences were found between the accession groups, but grouping in both systems did not match. Subsequently, 52 Pf accessions and three domesticated pea (Pisum sativum) genotypes were evaluated under well-watered (600mm) and water-limited (300mm) treatments. Total dry matter, grain yield, harvest index and average grain weight were higher in domesticated pea than wild Pf, however several Pf accessions exhibited lower drought susceptibility indices (i.e. greater stability across environments) than domesticated genotypes. Of special interest are a number of Pf genotypes in which low susceptibility to water stress was coupled with relatively high productivity. The sampling habitats of those low susceptibility - high productivity accessions are characterized by mild (400-530mm) annual precipitation. Further sampling and evaluation of Pf from such locations may improve our understanding of pea drought adaptation and yield physiology.

Developing new crops adapted to arid conditions is a promising approach to meet the increasing demand for food production under expanding aridity. Tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter] is a C4 cereal crop cultivated mainly in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, and known for its high resilience to stressful environments. Due to their tiny size, tef seeds are traditionally sown by broadcasting and lightly covering with soil. Under semiarid Mediterranean conditions, a deeper sowing may guarantee seedling establishment while saving on irrigation water. The objective of this study was, therefore, to determine the effects of sowing depth on tef emergence, development, lodging, and productivity. Tef seeds were sown at different depths in test tubes and pots, and in two field experiments. In tubes and pots, time from sowing to emergence increased about twofold and emergence rate decreased in the deepest sowing (3 cm) treatment compared to controls (0 cm). In the pot and field trials, deep sowing (3 cm) significantly reduced plant height, shoot and root biomass, and lodging. Sowing depths of 1&ndash, 2 cm allowed successful plant establishment while not exacting penalties on plant emergence or development, hence this range appears to be optimal for sowing irrigated tef.

Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter (tef) is a small annual grain, panicle-bearing, C4 cereal crop native to Ethiopia, where it is a major staple food. The objectives of the present study were to characterize the responses of two tef genotypes to escalating nitrogen (N) levels in terms of shoot, root, and grain biomass production, N concentration and uptake, and to determine an optimum N range at which tef performance is maximized. The N was applied in the irrigation water (Fertigation) in order to provide a consistent concentration of N in the root zone. A second goal was to test the feasibility of growing tef in the hot, arid conditions of the Northern Negev Desert. Two experiments were carried out in the Gilat Research Station (Negev region, Israel), each testing two different genotypes of tef (405B and 406W), and each including five replicates for each treatment. In the winter of 2015&ndash, 2016, tef plants were grown in perlite filled pots in a walk-in plastic-covered tunnel. Five different N treatments were applied through fertigation, meaning the fertilizer was applied with the irrigation water (10, 20, 40, 80, 120 mg L&minus, 1). All other nutrients were applied at the same sufficient rate. In the summer of 2016, tef plots were sown in open-field and applied with four different rates of N fertilization (0, 30, 60, 120 mg L&minus, 1). Biomass of the different plant parts, SPAD values, N, P and K concentration, and the lodging index were recorded in each experiment. The harvest index was also calculated. Optimum N fertigation concentration in both experiments was between 40 and 80 mg L&minus, 1, under which the time to flowering was decreased, and yield and grain protein concentration were optimized. Underfertilization caused a decrease in overall plant growth, whereas overfertilization caused an increase in vegetative growth at the expense of grain yield. Potassium uptake increased along with increased N availability, whereas P uptake did not. The fertilization rate will always need to take into account local soil and climate conditions. The field experiment also pointed to low harvest index as a major limitation on tef cultivation in the Northern Negev.

Wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides) is considered a promising source for improving drought resistance in domesticated wheat. Nevertheless, wild germplasm has not been widely used in wheat breeding for abiotic stress resilience. In the current study, a near isogenic line NIL-7A-B-2, introgressed with a drought-related QTL from wild emmer wheat on chromosome 7A, and its recurrent parent, bread wheat cv. BarNir, were investigated under four environments across 2 years-water-limited and well-watered conditions in a rain-protected screen-house (Year 1) and two commercial open field plots under ample precipitation (Year 2). NIL-7A-B-2 exhibited an advantage over BarNir in grain yield and biomass production under most environments. Further physiological analyses suggested that enhanced photosynthetic capacity and photochemistry combined with higher flag leaf area are among the factors underlying the improved productivity of NIL-7A-B-2. These were coupled with improved sink capacity in NIL-7A-B-2, manifested by greater yield components than its parental line. This study provides further support for our previous findings that introgression of wild emmer QTL alleles, using marker assisted selection, can enhance grain yield and biomass production across environments in domesticated wheat, thereby enriching the modern gene pool with essential diversity for the improvement of yield and drought resistance.

Pisum fulvum is an annual legume native to Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan. In certain locations, P. fulvum individuals were documented to display a reproductive dimorphism - amphicarpy, with both above and below ground flowers and pods. Herein we aimed to study the possible role of soil texture on amphicarpy in P. fulvum, to investigate the possible bio-climatic associations of P. fulvum amphicarpy and to identify genetic markers associated with this phenotype. A set of 127 germplasm accessions sampled across the Israeli distribution range of the species was phenotyped in two common garden nurseries. Land use and bioclimatic data were used to delineate the eco-geographic clustering of accession's sampling sites. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were employed in genome-wide association study to identify associated loci. Amphicarpy was subject to strong experimental site x genotype interaction with higher phenotypic expression in fine textured soil relative to sandy loam. Amphicarpy was more prevalent among accessions sampled in eastern Judea and Samaria and was weakly associated with early phenology and relatively modest above ground biomass production. Twelve SNP markers were significantly associated with amphicarpy, each explaining between 8 and 12 % of the phenotypic variation. In P. fulvum amphicarpy seems to be a polygenetic trait controlled by an array of genes that is likely to be affected by environmental stimuli. The probable selective advantage of the association between amphicarpy and early flowering is in line with its relative prevalence in drought prone territories subject to heavy grazing.

Durum wheat, Triticum turgidum ssp. durum Desf., is an important crop particularly in the Mediterranean basin. Powdery mildew, caused by the pathogen Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is a major disease of wheat that results in significant yield losses worldwide. A recombinant inbred line (RIL) population, derived from a cross between durum wheat and wild emmer wheat, T. turgidum ssp. dicoccoides, was used for genomic dissection of quantitative and qualitative resistance loci against wheat powdery mildew based on a genomic map of >600 markers, evenly distributed across the A and B genomes of tetraploid wheat. The genetic analysis of the phenotypic reactions of the RIL population to two Bgt isolates revealed two different resistance mechanisms. The first is monogenic: a wild emmer wheat allele in a single locus conferring complete resistance to Bgt#15, previously designated as PmG16. The second one is polygenic: a set of durum wheat alleles, in five independent QTLs that control partial resistance to Bgt#66 in the RIL population, with a LOD score range of 3.4–19.8. One of them is a major quantitative resistance locus (QRL) that was mapped on chromosome 1A and explains 26.4 % of the variance. In most of the detected QRLs, the durum wheat alleles conferred resistance to powdery mildew. These findings are exceptional in the sense that, so far, only a few Pm alleles originated from a durum wheat background. Therefore, our results emphasize the high potential of exploiting the wide genetic diversity of tetraploid wheat germplasm for wheat breeding using modern wheat genomics tools.

Wheat domestication and subsequent evolution under domestication occurred since the dawn of agriculture and caused significant genetic changes that affected plant morphology, physiology and phenology. The majority of these traits are quantitative traits controlled by many genes. Correspondingly, the main goal of the current study is genetic dissection of the key domestication trait (brittle rachis) and traits evolved under domestication, based on quantitative phenotyping. Genetic mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting brittle rachis, threshability, threshing efficiency, spike harvest index and kernel weight was conducted using a recombinant inbred lines population derived from a cross between Triticum durum and wild emmer wheat. Using a new quantitative phenotyping approach, we discovered novel QTLs underlying rachis fragility, spike threshability and other domestication-related traits and confirmed some of the known putative locations for QTLs affecting these traits. Overall, the number of domestication-related QTLs mapped to the A genome was twofold higher than those found on the B genome, in accordance with the concept of ‘genome asymmetry’, implying that the A genome is dedicated to the control of morphological traits, house-keeping metabolic reactions and yield components. Our results add a new dimension to this important concept and contribute to a better understanding of the initial steps of domestication evolution of cereals.

Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni is well known because of its accumulation of the sweet-tasting ent -kaurene diterpeneoid glycoside, which tastes about 300 times as sweet as sucrose. Although stevioside is one of the most abundant and best analyzed, more than 30 additional steviol glycosides so far have been identified and described. Stevioside concentration in the leaves is known to vary widely, depending on the growing conditions and agricultural practices. The present study aimed to examine the feasibility of growing Stevia as an open-field crop in Israel. In order to determine the agricultural practices required for optimizing Stevia biomass production and stevioside yield, effects of planting and harvest times upon plant development, biomass yield components, and stevioside content were examined. The optimal planting season, manifested in intensive plant development and maximal plant biomass yield, was at the beginning of spring, i.e., mid-March to early April. A minimal stand of 10 plants/m 2 was found more favorable than lower stands of 6, 8, or 10 plants/m 2′‘ . The optimal harvesting time, with the highest stevioside yield of about 30 g/m 2 was at the beginning of September, prior to flowering initiation. Moreover, harvesting at this time yielded increased leaf biomass, highly suitable for commercial stevioside extraction. Thus, Stevia rebaudiana offers substantial potential for introduction as a commercial agricultural crop for stevioside production in Israel.

Modifying plant architecture is considered a promising breeding option to enhance crop productivity. Modern chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars with either compound (wild-type) or simple leaf shapes are commercially grown but the relationships between leaf shape and yield are not well understood. In this study, a random sample of ‘Kabuli’ type progeny lines of both leaf types, derived from two crosses between modern American simple leaf cultivars and early-flowering wild-type breeding lines, were planted at different sowing densities. Leaf area development and final grain yield in genotypes of the two leaf types responded differently to changes in sowing densities. Compound leaf lines attained higher leaf area indices and higher grain yields at both low and high sowing densities. Yield responses of the simple leaf lines to increasing sowing density were significantly higher compared to compound leaf genotypes in two of three field experiments. The prospects for utilizing the simple leaf trait as a breeding target for short-season growing areas are discussed.

The gene-pool of wild emmer wheat, Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides, harbors a rich allelic repertoire for disease resistance. In the current study, we made use of tetraploid wheat mapping populations derived from a cross between durum wheat (cv. Langdon) and wild emmer (accession G18-16) to identify and map a new powdery mildew resistance gene derived from wild emmer wheat. Initially, the two parental lines were screened with a collection of 42 isolates of Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) from Israel and 5 isolates from Switzerland. While G18-16 was resistant to 34 isolates, Langdon was resistant only to 5 isolates and susceptible to 42 isolates. Isolate Bgt#15 was selected to differentiate between the disease reactions of the two genotypes. Segregation ratio of F(2-3) and recombinant inbreed line (F(7)) populations to inoculation with isolate Bgt#15 indicated the role of a single dominant gene in conferring resistance to Bgt#15. This gene, temporarily designated PmG16, was located on the distal region of chromosome arm 7AL. Genetic map of PmG16 region was assembled with 32 simple sequence repeat (SSR), sequence tag site (STS), Diversity array technology (DArT) and cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) markers and assigned to the 7AL physical bin map (7AL-16). Using four DNA markers we established colinearity between the genomic region spanning the PmG16 locus within the distal region of chromosome arm 7AL and the genomic regions on rice chromosome 6 and Brachypodium Bd1. A comparative analysis was carried out between PmG16 and other known Pm genes located on chromosome arm 7AL. The identified PmG16 may facilitate the use of wild alleles for improvement of powdery mildew resistance in elite wheat cultivars via marker-assisted selection.

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield and drought related traits were exchanged via marker-assisted selection (MAS) between elite cultivars of two cotton species, Gossypium barbadense (GB) cv. F-177 and Gossypium hirsutum (GH) cv. Siv’on. The resulting near-isogenic lines (NILs) manifested in many cases the expected drought-adaptive traits, but rarely exhibited an advantage in yield relative to the recipient parents. In the current study we characterized the photosynthetic activity of two selected NILs and their recipient parents under dryland and irrigated field conditions. The GB NIL exhibited a stable net rate of CO2 assimilation (A) across a wide range of leaf water potentials with a notable advantage over its recipient parent, F-177, under severe drought, associated with lower stomatal limitation, greater maximum velocity for carboxylation of Rubisco and greater electron transport rate. The GH NIL exhibited greater mesophyll conductance under drought conditions than its recipient parent, Siv’on, but these genotypes did not differ in A. Nevertheless, both NILs did not differ from their recipient parents in yield. This study provides further support to our previous conclusion that MAS is a useful means to enhance drought-adaptive traits of cotton but complimentary conventional breeding is required to achieve high yield potential.

Mineral nutrient malnutrition, and particularly deficiency in zinc and iron, afflicts over 3 billion people worldwide. Wild emmer wheat, Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides, genepool harbors a rich allelic repertoire for mineral nutrients in the grain. The genetic and physiological basis of grain protein, micronutrients (zinc, iron, copper and manganese) and macronutrients (calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and sulfur) concentration was studied in tetraploid wheat population of 152 recombinant inbred lines (RILs), derived from a cross between durum wheat (cv. Langdon) and wild emmer (accession G18-16). Wide genetic variation was found among the RILs for all grain minerals, with considerable transgressive effect. A total of 82 QTLs were mapped for 10 minerals with LOD score range of 3.2-16.7. Most QTLs were in favor of the wild allele (50 QTLs). Fourteen pairs of QTLs for the same trait were mapped to seemingly homoeologous positions, reflecting synteny between the A and B genomes. Significant positive correlation was found between grain protein concentration (GPC), Zn, Fe and Cu, which was supported by significant overlap between the respective QTLs, suggesting common physiological and/or genetic factors controlling the concentrations of these mineral nutrients. Few genomic regions (chromosomes 2A, 5A, 6B and 7A) were found to harbor clusters of QTLs for GPC and other nutrients. These identified QTLs may facilitate the use of wild alleles for improving grain nutritional quality of elite wheat cultivars, especially in terms of protein, Zn and Fe.

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield and drought related physiological traits, osmotic potential (OP), carbon isotope ratio (d 13 C, an indica- tor of water use efficiency), and leaf chlorophyll content (Chl), were exchanged via marker-assisted selection (MAS) between elite cultivars of the two cotton species Gossypium barbadense cv. F-177 and G. hirsutum cv. Siv'on. The resulting near isogenic lines (NILs) were examined in two field trials, each with two irrigation regimes, in order to (1) evaluate the potential to improve cotton drought resistance by MAS and (2) test the role of physiological traits in plant productivity. NILs introgressed with QTLs for high yield rarely exhibited an advantage in yield relative to the recipient parent, whereas a considerable number of NILs exhibited the expected phenotype in terms of lower OP (5 out of 9), higher d 13 C (4 out of 6) or high Chl (2 out of 3). Several NILs exhibited considerable modifications in non-targeted traits including leaf morphology, stomatal conductance and specific leaf weight (SLW). In G. barbadense genotypes, yield was correlated negatively with d 13 C and OP and positively with stomatal conductance, SLW and Chl, whereas in G. hirsutum yield was negatively correlated with d 13 C, SLW and Chl. This dissimilarity suggests that each of the respective species has evolved different mechanisms underlying plant productivity. We conclude that the improvement of drought related traits in cotton NILs may lead to improved drought resistance via MAS, but that conventional breeding may be necessary to combine the introduced QTL(s) with high yield potential.

Drought is the main environmental stress limiting crop productivity and yield stability worldwide. Improving drought resistance of crop plants is considered a sustainable and economically viable solution to increasing agricultural productivity under diminishing water availability. The implementation of this solution requires wide explorations of potential genetic resources and in-depth understanding of their adaptive mechanisms and responses to water deficit. In this minireview we summarize the physiological, ecological, and genetic aspects of drought resistance in wild emmer wheat [Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides (Korn.) Thell.] and discuss their implications on wheat improvement. A comprehensive survey of wild emmer wheat populations, collected across the aridity gradient in Israel, revealed wide genetic diversity for drought responses, with a considerable number of wild accessions exhibiting an advantage over durum wheat cultivars. Carbon isotope ratio ( 13 C/ 12 C, expressed with a differential notation as δ 13 C) has been proposed as an indirect selection criterion for plant water-use efficiency (WUE=total dry matter produced or yield harvested/water used). For efficient modification of WUE in breeding programs, it is essential to determine a sampling strategy, which will provide consistent genotypic ranking for δ 13 C and maximum differentiation between genotypes. The effects of growth stages and plant organs on δ 13 C values and their genotypic variations were studied in cotton cultivars grown in the field under two irrigation regimes. Values of δ 13 C in leaf remained stable during peak flowering and boll development stages and significantly increased at boll ripening stage, which could result from the effect of late-season water stress on WUE. δ 13 C varied significantly between plant organs, with lower values obtained in assimilating organs, leaf and bur, and higher values in non-assimilating organs, stem and fiber. This could possibly have resulted from carbon discrimination during secondary metabolism. A non-crossover interaction was found between growth stage and cultivar, whereas plant-organ effect did not interact with cultivars, indicating that a similar ranking of cultivars can be expected with δ 13 C at various growth stages and plant organs. Late season leaf samples and bur of the last boll revealed maximal differentiation among genotypes and water regimes, both among other growth stages as well as among other plant organs. These samples have also revealed the highest correlations between δ 13 C and WUE estimates. It is concluded that leaf sampling during boll ripening stage may be most effective for the assessment of δ 13 C as an indicator of WUE.

The silverleaf whitefly (SLW), Bemisia argentifolii (Bellows and Perring), has been a severe pest of numerous field and vegetable crops for many years. Nevertheless, little has been reported on the complex interactions between SLW and its host plants. This study was aimed at investigating the effects of SLW on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) photosynthesis and productivity under various irrigation and N fertilization regimes. Cotton plants (cv. Siv'on) were examined during an entire growing season in two factorial-designed screenhouse experiments consisting of two irrigation regimes (I) × two N application rates × two SLW levels (noninfested vs. infested). Buildup of the SLW population was markedly higher on N-fertilized plants than on N-deficient plants. Seed cotton yield was reduced by SLW infestation under all combinations of I × N treatments by about 40%. Yield reduction (noninfested minus infested) was significantly correlated with the number of SLW adults on the maximally infested leaf at peak flowering (r 2 = 0.94, P < 0.05 in 1995; r 2 = 0.91, P < 0.05 in 1996). Photosynthetic rate decreased 50% at about 60 d after SLW introduction. The relative photosynthetic rate (infested/noninfested) was significantly correlated with SLW adult density on the maximally infested leaf (r 2 = 0.72, P < 0.001 in 1995; r 2 = 0.53, P < 0.01 in 1996). The reduced photosynthetic rate was associated with reductions in chlorophyll variable fluorescence (Fv/Fm) and fluorescence yield. No substantial changes were found in stomatal conductance, intercellular CO 2 concentration, and leaf chlorophyll content. These findings indicate that SLW infestation impairs, either directly or indirectly, the photochemical reaction of the photosynthetic system in cotton plants.

Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is often exposed to drought, which adversely affects both yield and quality. Improved water-use efficiency (WUE = total dry matter produced or yield harvested / water used) is expected to reduce these adverse effects. Genetic variability in WUE and its association with photosynthetic rate and carbon isotope ratio ( 13 C/ 12 C) in cotton are reported in this paper. WUE of six cotton cultivars-G. hirsutum L., G. barbadense L., and an interspecific F 1 hybrid (G. hirsutum × G. barbadense, ISH), was examined under two irrigation regimes in two field trials. The greatest WUE was obtained by two G. hirsutum cultivars (2.55 g dry matter or 1.12 g seed-cotton L -1 H 2 O); the ISH obtained similar or somewhat lower values, and two G. barbadense cultivars and one G. hirsutum cultivar exhibited the lowest values (2.1 g dry matter or 0.8 to 0.85 g seed-cotton L -1 H 2 O). These results indicate that different cotton cultivars may have evolved different environmental adaptations that affect their WUE. Photosynthetic rate was correlated with WUE in only a few cases, emphasizing the limitation of this parameter as a basis for estimating crop WUE. Under both trials, WUE was positively correlated with carbon isotope ratio, indicating the potential of this technique as a selection criterion for improving cotton WUE.

Nitrate level in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaf petioles is commonly used as a practical guide to N fertilization, especially in cases of critically low N levels. The optimization of N supply to irrigated cotton requires a reliable method for monitoring the plant's N status. The feasibility of using leaf N concentrations monitored by near-infrared analysis (NIRA) as a guide for N fertilization in irrigated cotton was examined in this study. Three field trials were conducted in three consecutive years. The NIRA data from fresh leaf disks were calibrated against laboratory N measurements expressed as g N kg -1 dry matter (R 2 = 0.90). Validation of the calibration showed a high correlation between NIRA estimates and laboratory data from two field trials. Dawn leaf sampling was selected for routine monitoring of plant N status. Application of NIRA-guided N fertilization was examined in the third-year trial. The NIRA-guided treatment, with only 60 kg N ha -1 , resulted in only a 7.5% lower yield (statistically nonsignificant) relative to the commercial predetermined N treatment with 150 kg N ha -1 . Yield was linearly correlated with leafN concentration. Cotton leaf N concentration was reliably monitored by NIRA. Only 30 s are required for each N determination; using 10 samples, about 7 min are needed per plot. Once its reliability under various conditions is established, this method could be used for on-the-spot decision-making regarding N-fertilizer application in irrigated cotton.

Nineteen wild emmer wheat [Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides (Körn.) Thell.] genotypes were evaluated for the grain concentrations of phosphorous (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and cooper (Cu) under five different environments in Turkey and Israel. Each mineral nutrient has been investigated for the (1) genotype by environment (G × E) interactions, (2) genotype stability, (3) correlation among minerals and (4) mineral stability. Among the macronutrients analyzed, grain concentrations of Ca (range 338–2,034 mg kg−1) and S (range 0.18–0.43%) showed the largest variation. In the case of micronutrients, the largest variation was observed in the grain Mn concentration (range 13–87 mg kg−1). Grain concentrations of Fe and Zn also showed important variation (range 27–86 and 39–115 mg kg−1, respectively). Accessions with higher nutrient concentrations (especially Zn and Fe) had also greater grain weight, suggesting that higher grain Zn and Fe concentrations are not necessarily related to small grain size or weight. Analysis of variance showed that environment was the most important source of variation for K, S, Ca, Fe, Mn and Zn, explaining between 44 and 78% of the total variation and G × E explained between 20 and 40% of the total variation in all the minerals, except for S and Zn where its effect accounted for less than 16%. Genotype was the most important source of variation for Cu (explaining 38% of the total variation). However, genotype effect was also important for Mg, Mn, Zn and S. Sulfur and Zn showed the largest heritability values (77 and 72%, respectively). Iron exhibited low heritability and high ratio value between the G × E and genotype variance components , suggesting that specific adaptation for this mineral could be positively exploited. The wild emmer germplasm tested in the current study revealed some outstanding accessions (such as MM 5/4 and 24-39) in terms of grain Zn and Fe concentrations and environmental stability that can be used as potential donors to enhance grain micronutrient concentrations in wheats. The objective of this project was to introgress small overlapping chromosome segments which cover the genome of L. pennellii into Lycopersicon esculentum lines. The interspecific hybrid was backcrossed to L. esculentum, and a map of 981 cM, based on 146 molecular markers covering the entire genome, was produced. A similar backcross 1 population was selfed for six generations, under strong selection for cultivated tomato phenotypes, to produce 120 introgression lines. The introgression lines were assayed for the above-mentioned molecular markers, and 21 lines covering 936 cM of L. pennellii, with an average introgression of 86 cM, were selected to provide a resource for the mapping of new DNA clones. The rest of the lines have shorter introgressions consisting of specific regions with an average size of 38 cM. The proportion of the L. pennellii genome in the introgression lines was lower than expected (252 cM) because of strong selection against the wild-parent phenotype. The mean introgression rate for ends of linkage groups in the 120 lines was 3 times higher than for other regions of the genome. The introgression lines can assist in RFLP-based gene cloning by allowing the rapid selection of DNA markers that map to specific chromosome segments. The introgression lines also provide a base population for the mapping and breeding for quantitative traits such as salt and drought tolerance that characterize the wild species L. pennellii.

A genetic linkage map of tetraploid wheat was constructed based on a cross between durum wheat [Triticum turgidum ssp. durum (Desf.) MacKey] cultivar Langdon and wild emmer wheat [T. turgidum ssp. dicoccoides (Körn.) Thell.] accession G18-16. One hundred and fifty-two single-seed descent derived F(6) recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were analyzed with a total of 690 loci, including 197 microsatellite and 493 DArT markers. Linkage analysis defined 14 linkage groups. Most markers were mapped to the B-genome (60%), with an average of 57 markers per chromosome and the remaining 40% mapped to the A-genome, with an average of 39 markers per chromosome. To construct a stabilized (skeleton) map, markers interfering with map stability were removed. The skeleton map consisted of 307 markers with a total length of 2,317 cM and average distance of 7.5 cM between adjacent markers. The length of individual chromosomes ranged between 112 cM for chromosome 4B to 217 cM for chromosome 3B. A fraction (30.1%) of the markers deviated significantly from the expected Mendelian ratios; clusters of loci showing distorted segregation were found on chromosomes 1A, 1BL, 2BS, 3B, and 4B. DArT markers showed high proportion of clustering, which may be indicative of gene-rich regions. Three hundred and fifty-two new DArT markers were mapped for the first time on the current map. This map provides a useful groundwork for further genetic analyses of important quantitative traits, positional cloning, and marker-assisted selection, as well as for genome comparative genomics and genome organization studies in wheat and other cereals.

Cotton is unusual among major crops in that large acreages are grown under both irrigated and rainfed conditions, making genotype x environment interactions of even greater importance than usual in designing crop-improvement strategies. We describe the impact of well-watered versus water-limited growth conditions on the genetic control of fiber quality, a complex suite of traits that collectively determine the utility of cotton. Fiber length, length uniformity, elongation, strength, fineness, and color (yellowness) were influenced by 6, 7, 9, 21, 25 and 11 QTLs (respectively) that could be detected in one or more treatments. The genetic control of cotton fiber quality was markedly affected both by general differences between growing seasons ("years") and by specific differences in water management regimes. Seventeen QTLs were detected only in the water-limited treatment while only two were specific to the well-watered treatment, suggesting that improvement of fiber quality under water stress may be even more complicated than improvement of this already complex trait under well-watered conditions. In crops such as cotton with widespread use of both irrigated and rainfed production systems, the need to manipulate larger numbers of genes to confer adequate quality under both sets of conditions will reduce the expected rate of genetic gain. These difficulties may be partly ameliorated by efficiencies gained through identification and use of diagnostic DNA markers, including those identified herein.

Interspecific segregating populations derived from a cross between tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) cv 'M82-1 -8' (M82) and the wild species L. pennellii accession LA-716 (Lpen716) were used to study the genetic basis of salt tolerance and its implications for breeding. BC1 (M82 x (M82 x Lpen716)) and BC1 S1 (progenies of selfed BC1 plants) populations were grown under arid field conditions and irrigated with water having electrical conductivities of 1.5 (control), 10 and 20 dSm(-1). The evaluation of salt tolerance was based on total fruit yield (TY), total dry matter (TD) and TD under salinity relative to the control (RD). Sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations were measured in the leaves and stems. The methods for estimating heritability were adapted to BC1 plants and BC1S1 families. TY, TD and RD had heritability estimates of 0.3-0.45, indicating that salt tolerance can be improved by selection. Genetic correlations between traits indicated that high yield may be combined with salt tolerance and that ion contents are not likely to provide an efficient selection criteria for salt tolerance. Genetic correlations between performances under various salinity levels suggested that similar mechanisms affect the responses to salinity treatments of 10 and 20 dSm(-1). Responses to "paper" selection confirmed that salt tolerance of the tomato may be improved by selection, and that this selection should be based on dry matter and yield parameters under salinity.
