Standard traditional technologies like air conditioning, free cooling, and liquid cooling are investigated. Their limitations as well as proposed improvements are thoroughly discussed. The article also delves into underfloor and overhead air supply technologies, presenting their advantages and drawbacks. The review introduces novel approaches at the rack level cooling, including baffles, variable airflow management, and optimal server placement. Key findings stress the efficacy of optimized airflow systems and innovative rack-level cooling, underlining their role in reducing energy consumption and enhancing overall performance. Notably, potential energy savings of up to 67.2 % compared to traditional methods are demonstrated. The adoption of advanced cooling technologies, such as direct and indirect natural cooling, liquid-cooling cold plates, submersion, heat pipe, and thermosiphon-based cooling, exhibits promising energy efficiency gains and reduced Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) values. Research into content-specific efficiency enhancements, adaptable energy-saving tactics, and all-encompassing server power consumption models is necessary. To work toward future sustainable, energy-efficient data centers, researchers should investigate how CRACs and server fans interact, find ways to integrate thermal and power management, and how artificial intelligence can be used to cool servers in an eco-friendly way. This paper presents new metrics to measure the effect of thermal mass on the energy required to heat and cool buildings. Previous studies have been flawed as they have not considered the interaction between intermittent occupancy and thermal mass, which has a significant impact on overall energy use. However, existing parameters do not adequately capture these effects, so the new metrics developed in this paper are used to analyse the impact of thermal mass in hot climates with active cooling, and cold climates with active heating. The results agree with existing literature that high thermal mass structures are likely to be effective in hot climates; however, in cold climates the drawbacks of high thermal mass likely outweigh the advantages, and high thermal mass can cause an increase in energy use. This finding has implications for the design of buildings in cold climates, and contradicts the commonly-held assumption that high thermal mass is correlated with low energy use. The new metrics (transient energy ratio and effective U -value) provide a generalisable method to quantify these effects. They are further used here to analyse the dynamic performance of heavily insulated buildings and show that high thermal mass often leads to higher energy use in cold climates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In tropical climates, the energy consumed by ventilation and air conditioning can exceed 50% of the total consumption of a building. Demand for cooling is rising steadily, driven mainly by growing incomes in developing economies, and is expected to also increase with climate change. Tropical, coastal areas with narrow continental shelves are good sites for the implementation of Seawater Air Conditioning (SWAC), a renewable and low CO 2 emission cooling process. This paper presents the existing SWAC projects around the world and gives details on the technology. Data on ocean temperature profiles, ocean bathymetry and world surface temperature are processed with the intent of estimating the world potential of SWAC. The results present the required distance from coast to reach seawater with a temperature of 5 °C or less. This is combined with the potential demand for air conditioning, taking into account surface air temperature and a set SWAC design for cooling from 30 to 20 °C. The pipeline length, seawater depth and capacity factor are then used to estimate the costs of SWAC projects around the world. It is concluded that the locations with the highest potential for SWAC are intertropical islands and some continental locations. The field performance of a low-flow internally cooled/heated liquid desiccant air conditioning (LDAC) system is investigated in this paper. The quasi-steady performance (sensible and latent heat transfer rates, coefficient of performance (COP), and uncertainties) of the LDAC system is quantified under different ambient air conditions. A major contribution of this work is a direct comparison of the transient and quasi-steady performance of the LDAC system. This paper is the first to quantify the importance of transients and shows that, for the environmental and operating conditions in this paper, transients can be neglected when estimating the energy consumption of the LDAC system. Another major contribution of this work is the development and verification of a new method that quantifies (with acceptable uncertainties) the quasi-steady performance of a LDAC system from transient field data using average data. This paper focuses on the thermal and energetic behavior of a building located in the Brazilian Amazon Region, a region climatically characterized by elevated temperatures and high humidity levels, where achieving adequate thermal comfort demands a high-energy consumption due to the use of air-conditioning systems. Therefore, different energy conservation measures (ECMs) need to be evaluated to reduce the thermal load for cooling. The use of a thermal insulation material on the west wall and on the roof, and a photovoltaic (PV) system integrated as an architectural element and adapted to the roof of the building are considered. The building is simulated with the software energyplus, with its thermal behavior and energy consumption analyzed for an entire year and for a chosen design day, defined with data measured by a weather station installed close to the building. According to the evaluations carried out, it is determined that the ECMs have a direct and major influence on the reduction of the thermal load for cooling, on the reduction of the effects caused by radiation with the shading on the eaves, and the reduction of the transmittance on the surfaces that were modified in the study. In terms of energy consumption and economic feasibility, the ECMs reach an annual energy saving percentage of 74% for the building chosen as the case study, and the solutions adopted provide the return of the financial investment, proving suitable for energy saving and economically viable for regions with similar climatic characteristics. Abstract: Air conditioning is essential for maintaining thermal comfort in indoor environments, particularly for hot and humid climates. Today, air conditioning, comprising cooling and dehumidification, has become a necessity in commercial and residential buildings and industrial processes. It accounts for a major share of the energy consumption of a building or facility. In tropical climates, the energy consumed by heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) can exceed 50% of the total energy consumption of a building. This significant figure is primarily due to the heavy duty placed on cooling technologies to remove both sensible and latent heat loads. Therefore, there is tremendous potential to improve the overall efficiency of the air-conditioning systems in buildings. Based on today’s practical technology for cooling, the major components of a chiller plant are (1) compressors, (2) cooling towers, (3) pumps (chilled and cooling water) and (4) fans in air handling units. They all consume mainly electricity to operate. When specifying the kW/Rton of a plant, there are two levels of monitoring cooling efficiency: (1) at the efficiency of the chiller machines or the compressors which consume a major amount of electricity; and (2) at the overall efficiency of cooling plants which include the cooling towers, pumps for moving coolant (chilled and cooling water) to all air-handling units. Pragmatically, a holistic approach is necessary towards achieving a low energy input per cooling achieved such as 0.6kW/Rton cooling or lower by considering all aspects of the cooling plant. In this paper, we present a review of recent innovative cooling technology and strategies that could potentially lower the kW/Rton of cooling systems – from the existing mean of 0.9kW/Rton towards 0.6kW/Rton or lower. The paper, broadly divided into three key sections (see Fig. 2), begins with a review of the recent novel devices that enhances the energy efficiency of cooling systems at the component level. This is followed by a review of innovative cooling systems designs that reduces energy use for air conditioning. Lastly, the paper presents recent developments in intelligent air-control strategies and smart chiller sequencing methodologies that reduce the primary energy utilization for cooling. The energy efficient cooling technology, innovative systems designs, and intelligent control strategies described in the paper have been recently researched or are on-going studies. Abstract: Reducing the energy consumption of air-conditioning systems is becoming increasingly important. This paper focuses on the air-conditioning system in Terminal 3 in Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, the first airport terminal to adopt radiant cooling in China. In the large spaces of this airport terminal, a temperature and humidity independent control (THIC) system has been adopted instead of a conventional nozzle air supply method, which significantly reduces the energy consumption of the air supply. The radiant floor is the main mechanism for indoor temperature control, while a liquid desiccant outdoor air processor combined with displacement ventilation is responsible for humidity control. Ice storage is adopted to reduce operating costs, and the supplied chilled water temperature can be as low as 3°C. This paper examines the performance of the THIC system in detail. The indoor environment is determined through measurements to be comfortable, and the on-site performances of key components in both the airport terminal and the cooling plant are investigated. The outdoor air processor supplies air of appropriate temperature and humidity ratio; two kinds of radiant floors are used for temperature control, both with measured cooling capacities of about 30–40W/m2; and the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the cooling plant is 2.62. This paper proposes a gravity heat pipe exchanger used for cooling the communication base station to replace the traditional air conditioning system during winter and transition seasons. Tests were conducted on a commercial available gravity heat pipe exchanger. The experiment was performed to study the effects of the air flow rate and temperature on the cooling capacity, the heat transfer unit number (NTU) and cooling efficiency of the heat pipe exchanger. The results showed that the larger the air flow rate, the smaller the NTU and the larger the cooling capacity. Based on the analysis of the experimental data, it proved that the gravity heat pipe exchanger could reduce running time and operating cost of air conditioning system. According to the practical applications, the yearly cooling loads of a typical communication base station were further calculated for five typical cities which represent the five climatic zones of China. The results validated that the energy saving by using the gravity heat pipe exchanger is significant. The highest annual electricity-saving rate is achieved by Kunming, about 48.6%, while the lowest annual electricity-saving rate is obtained in Guangzhou, about 18.7% among the five climatic zones. The fitted correlation of cooling capacity in term of outdoor temperature is generic to evaluate approximately the performance of applying the gravity heat pipe exchanger in the actual applications subject to various outdoor temperatures. Abstract: The electricity demand in Iran has increased steadily in recent years. This is mainly due to the rapid growth in the number of high-rise air-conditioned buildings and the rapid use of electrical appliances in residential and commercial sectors. This paper investigates the annual energy required for cooling per unit area and the total energy cost per unit area for each type of air conditioning systems in different climates in Iran. The paper also investigates the effects of changing the coefficient of performance (COP) of absorption chillers on cost saving. This study found that using absorption chillers for cooling will increase the amount of energy usage per unit area; however the energy cost per unit area will decrease. In addition this research indicates that for each 0.1 increment in COP of absorption chillers, there is at least 50USD/m2 saved cost. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper aims to study the various parameters that affect the energy performance of commercial buildings in Singapore. The parameters are diverse, ranging from characteristics of construction of the walls and windows, to the various system settings and types within the building. Building energy performance is measured via two key indexes, namely, the Envelope Thermal Transfer Value (ETTV) and the annual cooling energy requirement (E c). Parameters related to these two indexes are identified. An additional parameter, the solar absorptance of the wall, is further incorporated to calibrate the ETTV equation. A relative ranking on the functional parameters of ETTV has been performed to evaluate their effectiveness in lowering the ETTV of buildings. In addition, the impact of using cladding on ETTV is also studied. A correlation for E c, expressed in the form of a simple linear equation, has been developed. This correlation accounts for the internal building loads, envelope loads, operating schedules and efficiency of the cooling equipment. Finally, ETTV and E c have been employed to study the effects of chiller over-sizing and ventilation rates on building cooling energy. In this paper, passive cooling strategies have been investigated to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing cooling thermal loads and air conditioning energy consumption for residential buildings in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Specifically, three passive cooling techniques have been evaluated including natural ventilation, downdraft evaporative cooling, and earth tube cooling. These passive cooling systems are applied to a prototypical KSA residential villa model with an improved building envelope. The analysis has been carried using detailed simulation tool for several cities representing different climate conditions throughout KSA. The impact of the passive cooling systems is evaluated on both energy consumption and electrical peak demand for residential villas with and without improved building envelope for five cities, representatives of various climate conditions in KSA. It is found that both natural ventilation and evaporative cooling provide a significant reduction in cooling energy use and electrical peak demand for the prototypical villa located in dry KSA climates such as that of Riyadh and Tabuk. Natural ventilation alone has reduced the cooling energy end-use by 22%, while the evaporative cooling system has resulted in 64% savings in cooling energy end-use. Moreover, the natural ventilation is found to have a high potential in all KSA climates, while evaporative cooling can be suitable only in hot and dry climates such as Riyadh and Tabuk. Finally, the analysis showed that natural ventilation provided the lowest electrical peak demand when applied into the improved envelope residential buildings in all five cities in KSA. This paper proposes a hybrid algorithm to solve the optimal energy dispatch of an ice storage air-conditioning system. Based on a real air-conditioning system, the data, including the return temperature of chilled water, the supply temperature of chilled water, the return temperature of ice storage water, and the supply temperature of ice storage water, are measured. The least-squares regression (LSR) is used to obtain the input-output (I/O) curve for the cooling load and power consumption of chillers and ice storage tank. The objective is to minimize overall cost in a daily schedule while satisfying all constraints, including cooling loading under the time-of-use (TOU) rate. Based on the Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) and Ant Colony Optimization, an Ant-Based Radial Basis Function Network (ARBFN) is constructed in the searching process. Simulation results indicate that reasonable solutions provide a practical and flexible framework allowing the economic dispatch of ice storage air-conditioning systems, and offering greater energy efficiency in dispatching chillers. For countries in the Arabian Peninsula, air conditioning (A/C) systems account for 65% of the energy consumption, all of which comes from fossil fuel. Given the preparation for the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar, the possibility of implementing ground source heat pump systems (GSHP) for A/C purposes is investigated. Due to its high thermal performance, GSHP is considered a viable solution for reducing the energy consumption of heating and A/C systems. However, for the GSHP system to gain popularity in cooling-dominated environments such as Qatar, financial and environmental benefits need to be demonstrated. These benefits strongly depend on local design practices and standards and on working conditions. The work presented in this paper demonstrates the energy savings by using GSHP systems in the residential buildings sector in cooling-dominated environments. To achieve this goal, a common type of residential house located in Doha, Qatar, was chosen as a case study. The cooling load of the case study and the driving energy of two different air conditioning systems were estimated. The two considered air conditioning systems are the conventional air source heat pump system (reference system) and the ground source heat pump system. Finally, economic analysis of the proposed system for construction practices in Qatar was carried out. The performed analyses show that the reduction in the prime energy demand and, consequently, the greenhouse gas emissions for the GSHP is 19% when compared to the conventional air source heat pump system. The cooling energy requirements are certainly a key issue in warm climates. Vapour compression refrigeration systems involve high energy consumptions and environmental emissions and that makes this kind of technology unattractive. These aspects are most relevant in buildings which have high volume and high internal thermal loads as happens often in industrial buildings. For this kind of buildings a sustainable alternative to improve indoor thermal conditions is represented by evaporative cooling systems. Such systems take advantage of the water evaporation process to cool an air stream, which could cool the supplied air or which could be itself the supplied air to the conditioned environment. In this paper a wide analysis of evaporative cooling applications is presented referring to a sample industrial building characterized by relevant thermal discomfort. The thermal behaviour of building has been evaluated using the transient simulation program TRNSYS, in which different study cases are implemented on varying the cooling system. Moreover, a kind of indirect evaporative cooling systems, called cyclic evaporative cooling, in which the air temperature can be reduced below the wet bulb temperature, has been designed. This paper describes numerical modeling of heat and mass transfer in five different exchangers utilizing the Maisotsenko cycle for indirect evaporative cooling. For this purpose, numerical models are developed based on the modified ε-NTU method to perform thermal calculations of the indirect evaporative cooling process, thus quantifying overall performance of considered heat exchangers. Numerical simulation reveals many unique features of considered devices, enabling an accurate prediction of their performance. The results of computer simulation showed high efficiency gains that are sensitive to various inlet conditions, and allow for estimation of optimum operating conditions, including suitable climatic zones for the proposed unit using. Abstract: The telecommunication industry is concerned about the energy costs of its operating infrastructure and the associated greenhouse gas emissions. At present, more than half of the total energy consumption of data centers is devoted to the power and cooling infrastructure that supports electronic equipment. One method of reducing energy consumption is an approach called “free air cooling,” where ambient air is used to cool the equipment directly, thereby reducing the energy consumed in cooling and conditioning the air. For example, Intel demonstrated free air cooling in a 10-megawatt (MW) data center, showing a reduction in energy use and savings of US$2.87million annually. However, the impacts of this approach on the performance and reliability of telecommunication equipment need to be identified. The implementation of free air cooling changes the operating environment, including temperature and humidity, which may have a significant impact on the performance and reliability of telecom equipment. This paper discusses the challenges posed by free air cooling and presents a multi-stage process for evaluating and mitigating the potential risks arising from this new operating environment. Abstract: Electricity demand in residential and commercial sectors has increased steadily over the past 50 years in Malaysia. The bulk of which is being consumed by air conditioning systems. Absorption cooling systems can be a reasonable alternative to have conditioned spaces in the country. The fuel consumption to produce electricity for cooling purposes in residential and commercial sectors has been forecasted from 2012 to 2025. The paper also investigates the effect of applying five different scenarios on energy and fuel consumption by retrofitting absorption chillers instead of conventional cooling systems. This study found that the consumption of natural gas will be raised by increase in utilized absorption chillers however, the consumption of different fuels such as coal, diesel and fuel oil will decrease in thermal power plants. This paper presents an experimental and analytical study on the inverter split-type air-conditioner for the purpose of energy saving and a proper balance between sensible and latent capacity. Performance of an inverter split-type air-conditioner is investigated at varied refrigerant mass flow rates, air volume flow rates, and set point temperatures. The performance investigated for a 2.54-kW inverter split-type air-conditioner includes cooling capacity, power consumption, the value of coefficient of performance (COP), and equipment sensible heat ratio (SHR). An increase of electrical frequency input to compressor from 34 to 66 Hz results in an increase of cooling capacity by 0.88 kW, a decrease of COP by 0.84, and a decrease of SHR by 0.11. An increase in cooling coil flow rate from 4.14 to 8.2 m3/min results in an increase in cooling capacity by 0.16 kW, an increase in COP by 0.10, and an increase in SHR by 0.15. An increase of set point temperature from 24 to 26°C results in an increase of the value of COP by 0.13 and a decrease of SHR by 0.03. Abstract: This paper provides a comparative study of the performance of cross-flow and counter-flow M-cycle heat exchangers for dew point cooling. It is recognised that evaporative cooling systems offer a low energy alternative to conventional air conditioning units. Recently emerged dew point cooling, as the renovated evaporative cooling configuration, is claimed to have much higher cooling output over the conventional evaporative modes owing to use of the M-cycle heat exchangers. Cross-flow and counter-flow heat exchangers, as the available structures for M-cycle dew point cooling processing, were theoretically and experimentally investigated to identify the difference in cooling effectiveness of both under the parallel structural/operational conditions, optimise the geometrical sizes of the exchangers and suggest their favourite operational conditions. Through development of a dedicated computer model and case-by-case experimental testing and validation, a parametric study of the cooling performance of the counter-flow and cross-flow heat exchangers was carried out. The results showed the counter-flow exchanger offered greater (around 20% higher) cooling capacity, as well as greater (15%–23% higher) dew-point and wet-bulb effectiveness when equal in physical size and under the same operating conditions. The cross-flow system, however, had a greater (10% higher) Energy Efficiency (COP). As the increased cooling effectiveness will lead to reduced air volume flow rate, smaller system size and lower cost, whilst the size and cost are the inherent barriers for use of dew point cooling as the alternation of the conventional cooling systems, the counter-flow system is considered to offer practical advantages over the cross-flow system that would aid the uptake of this low energy cooling alternative. In line with increased global demand for energy in cooling of building, largely by economic booming of emerging developing nations and recognised global warming, the research results will be of significant importance in terms of promoting deployment of the low energy dew point cooling system, helping reduction of energy use in cooling of buildings and cut of the associated carbon emission. Abstract: The temperature and humidity independent control (THIC) system, which controls indoor temperature and moisture separately, may be an attractive alternative to existing conventional HVAC systems for its prominent improvement on the overall system performance and utilization of low grade energy resources. In order to verify the effectiveness of THIC system, a pilot project has been implemented in an office building in Shenzhen, China. In the system, liquid desiccant fresh air handling units driven by heat pumps are utilized to remove the entire latent load of outdoor air supplied for the whole building, and chilled water at the temperature of 17.5°C from chiller is pumped and distributed into dry fan coil units and radiant panels to control indoor temperature. This paper presents the results of field test of the system, which shows that the system can provide a comfortable indoor environment even in very hot and humid weather. The COP of the entire THIC system can reach 4.0. According to the energy usage data recorded from the year 2009, the energy consumption of the THIC system in the tested office building was 32.2kWh/(m2 yr), which demonstrates magnificent energy-saving potential compared with the conventional air-conditioning system (around 49kWh/(m2 yr)). Abstract: In this paper a new operation principle of an air-conditioning system for hydrogen driven cars is proposed and experimental results of a laboratory prototype are presented. The system is able to utilize the potential energy of the compressed hydrogen gas as main driving energy to generate a cooling effect usable for e.g. air-conditioning. Therefore, it is able to partially reuse the compression energy originally spent in order to increase the energy density of hydrogen but is so far wasted onboard. The underlying principle of the process is based on a chemical reaction of a metal hydride (Ti0.99Zr0.01V0.43Fe0.09Cr0.05Mn1.5) with hydrogen at different pressures and corresponding equilibrium temperatures. The laboratory prototype consists of two alternating capillary tube bundle reactors (together around 5 kg and 1.5 l) and is able to generate a quasi-continuous cooling effect at 13 °C in the order of 900 W. Abstract: Cooling load calculations are essential in sizing air conditioning system equipment. In designing energy, efficient and renewable energy sourced cooling systems for buildings, it is important to have the exact values of cooling loads and seasonal cooling demands of buildings. In this paper new assessment method for more precise determining of cooling loads and seasonal cooling demands of residential buildings are developed, which are necessary for right solutions of cooling efficiency problems. Comparing to the method of ASHRAE, example and other methods it provides more correct results. Abstract: Desiccant based air conditioning systems are a suitable way to improve indoor air quality due to its superior humidity control. In this study, a novel desiccant based air conditioning system is designed and tested experimentally to improve the indoor air quality and reduce energy consumption. In the system studied, a heat exchanger, which is not used in this type of systems, for pre-heating the regeneration air with exhaust air is used. Abstract: This paper gives a concise review of new designs and developments of illumination, heating and air-conditioning systems and technologies for energy-efficient buildings. Important breakthroughs in these areas include high-efficiency and/or reduced cost solar system components, LED lamps, smart windows, computer-controlled illumination systems, compact combined heat-power generation systems, and so on. To take advantage of these new technologies, hybrid or cascade energy systems have been proposed and/or investigated. A survey of innovative architectural and building envelope designs that have the potential to considerably reduce the illumination and heating and cooling costs for office buildings and residential houses is also included in the review. In addition, new designs and ideas that can be easily implemented to improve the energy efficiency and/or reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts of new or existing buildings are proposed and discussed. Abstract: A water-cooled chiller system in an air-conditioned hotel can take up about one-quarter of the total electricity consumption and considerable amounts of water in the heat rejection process. This paper evaluates operating cost savings of a chiller system integrated with optimal control of cooling towers and condenser water pumps. A sophisticated chiller system model was used to ascertain how different control methods influence the annual electricity and water consumption of chillers operating for the cooling load profile of a reference hotel. It is estimated that applying load-based speed control to the cooling tower fans and condenser water pumps could reduce the annual system electricity use by 8.6% and operating cost by 9.9% relative to the equivalent system using constant speed fans and pumps with a fixed set point of 29.4°C for cooling water temperature control. Abstract: The large thermal time constant of thermally activated building systems (TABS) hampers communication between the system''s production and emission. Therefore, conventional building control strategies, typically using room temperature feedback, are unadapted to control thermal comfort efficiently. In this paper, measurement data and simulation results reveal that unadapted TABS control has a dramatic impact on overall energy performance. Measurements in a TABS building with room temperature feedback show the HVAC system switching between heating and cooling in a very short time frame. A simplified, generic room model is used to simulate, understand and evaluate this behaviour. For room temperature feedback control, only 45% of the cold and 15% of the heat produced actually controls room temperature. The remainder is stored in the TABS and exchanged between the heating and cooling system. Enlarging the heating-to-cooling set point band improves this ratio, while maintaining thermal comfort. On the other hand, night time operation control of the circulation pump, adapted to the TABS thermal time constant, eliminates this ‘unused’ energy completely. In this case, however, even with perfect heat gain forecasts, it is difficult to avoid room temperatures dropping below thermal comfort limits during initial office hours. This paper describes how direct evaporative coolers can be used to improve the energy efficiency of air-cooled chillers in various operating conditions and with different strategies for staging condenser fans. These coolers are installed in front of air-cooled condensers to precool outdoor air before entering the condensers. A simulation analysis on an air-cooled chiller equipped with a direct evaporative cooler showed that when head pressure control is used, the cooler enables the condensing temperature to drop by 2.1-6.2°C, resulting in a 1.4-14.4% decrease in chiller power and a 1.3-4.6% increase in the refrigeration effect. When the chiller with the cooler operates under condensing temperature control, where condenser effectiveness is enhanced by staging all condenser fans, there is a savings in chiller power of 1.3-4.3% in some operating conditions in which the drop in compressor power exceeds the additional condenser fan power due to the pressure drop across the cooler.
