Heat transfer enhancement techniques are popularly used in various engineering applications such as heat exchanger, air conditioning, chemical reactors and refrigeration systems. Twisted tape is one of the most important passive techniques, which has been proved to disturb the flow fluid in tube and then strengthen the heat transfer efficiency. This paper conducted comprehensive and comparative review on experimental and numerical works taken by researchers on self-rotating and stationary twisted tapes. It is found that the heat transfer enhancement and the function of online anti-scaling and descaling in tube can be obtained with the self-rotating twisted tapes. Meanwhile, the tube with self-rotating twisted tapes gives the lower pressure drop. Both heat transfer coefficient and friction factor increase with the decreasing of twisted ratio. The twisted tapes combined with different modified techniques are the new development directions of heat transfer enhancement. This paper shows development of a simple, cheap “Building Energy Management System” (BEMS) to monitor energy consumption, and an application to measure energy consumption, including electricity and gas consumption in buildings. The system uses current transformers to measure electric consumption at each distribution box. Web cameras monitor lighting in each room, as well as air conditioning status by recognizing the movement of a ribbon at the outlet. Web cameras can also monitor gas consumption at the meter through character recognition. The data is sent via network to a computer for monitoring and analysis. As an example, key components of this BEMS were tested to measure building energy consumption of Osaka City University Sugimoto Campus in Japan for a period of 2 years (2013, 2014). The electric consumption of campus as well as the electric and gas consumption for air conditioning use was measured. Web cameras were installed in several rooms in one section of the campus to record lighting and air conditioning use data. The data was analyzed to reveal a correlation between hourly outdoor temperature and hourly electric consumption, with a stronger correlation between hourly outdoor temperature and hourly electric consumption for air conditioning. The energy consumption calculation plays an important role in the analysis of project economic and social benefits. In order to calculate energy consumption accurately, this research presents a water temperature of condenser inlet calculation model of river-water source heat pump unit. The feasibility and calculation error of the model had been analyzed. Additionally, the new water temperature calculation model had been validated via an engineering case. The results showed that the hourly water temperature in 24 h could be replaced by daily average water temperature due to little change of the daily water temperature change. In this case, the calculation error could be less than 5%. It is found that despite water temperature has many influenced factors, there is a remarkable relationship between the daily average water temperature and daily average outdoor dry bulb temperature by data analysis (R 2 ≈ 0.9). The influence of river sampling location on water temperature calculation of condenser inlet could be ignored due to slight temperature changes (within 0.15 °C). The method proposed in this paper met the engineering accuracy and provided a very effective method for the engineering calculation of energy consumption of water chilling unit. In addition to their harmful impact on the environment, air-conditioning applications account for a significant percentage of total energy utilization; thinking about clean resources becomes a world priority. Solar cooling systems using either adsorption or absorption technologies show a great potential since they can use a permanent energy and operate with environmentally safe working pairs. This paper investigates the potential of solar air-conditioning systems in Morocco (enjoying different climates) through a comparative study between conventional and solar closed cycle processes based on economic and environmental indicators. Accordingly, annual simulations in 6 climatic zones were performed to estimate cooling loads for a typical Modern Moroccan House. The major finding of this work is that solar air-conditioning systems in hot climates must be an attractive alternative to mitigate CO 2 emissions and increase energy savings. Power demand response is considered as one of the most promising solutions in relieving the power imbalance of an electrical grid that results a series of critical problems to the gird and end-users. In order to effectively make use of the demand response potentials of buildings, this paper presents a novel air-conditioning system with proactive demand control for daily load shifting and real time power balance in the developing smart grid. This system consists of a chilled water storage system (CWS) and a temperature and humidity independent control (THIC) air-conditioning system, which can significantly reduce the storage volume of the chilled water tank and effectively enable a building with more flexibility in changing its electricity usage patterns. The power demand of the proposed air-conditioning system can be flexibly controlled as desired by implementing two types of demand response strategies: demand side bidding (DSB) strategy and demand as frequency controlled reserve (DFR) strategy, in respond to the day-ahead and hour-ahead power change requirements of the grid, respectively. Considerable benefits (e.g., energy and cost savings) can be achieved for both the electricity utilities and building owners under incentive pricing or tariffs. This paper proposes a hybrid algorithm to solve the optimal energy dispatch of an ice storage air-conditioning system. Based on a real air-conditioning system, the data, including the return temperature of chilled water, the supply temperature of chilled water, the return temperature of ice storage water, and the supply temperature of ice storage water, are measured. The least-squares regression (LSR) is used to obtain the input-output (I/O) curve for the cooling load and power consumption of chillers and ice storage tank. The objective is to minimize overall cost in a daily schedule while satisfying all constraints, including cooling loading under the time-of-use (TOU) rate. Based on the Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) and Ant Colony Optimization, an Ant-Based Radial Basis Function Network (ARBFN) is constructed in the searching process. Simulation results indicate that reasonable solutions provide a practical and flexible framework allowing the economic dispatch of ice storage air-conditioning systems, and offering greater energy efficiency in dispatching chillers. The demand for better indoor environment has led to a wide use of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. However, this demanding cannot be sustained without a strategy to reduce the energy consumption of HVAC systems. Employing advanced HVAC control is one of the strategies to maintain high-quality indoor thermal comfort with low energy consumption. This paper reviews the development of control technologies for HVAC systems. For countries in the Arabian Peninsula, air conditioning (A/C) systems account for 65% of the energy consumption, all of which comes from fossil fuel. Given the preparation for the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar, the possibility of implementing ground source heat pump systems (GSHP) for A/C purposes is investigated. Due to its high thermal performance, GSHP is considered a viable solution for reducing the energy consumption of heating and A/C systems. However, for the GSHP system to gain popularity in cooling-dominated environments such as Qatar, financial and environmental benefits need to be demonstrated. These benefits strongly depend on local design practices and standards and on working conditions. The work presented in this paper demonstrates the energy savings by using GSHP systems in the residential buildings sector in cooling-dominated environments. To achieve this goal, a common type of residential house located in Doha, Qatar, was chosen as a case study. The cooling load of the case study and the driving energy of two different air conditioning systems were estimated. The two considered air conditioning systems are the conventional air source heat pump system (reference system) and the ground source heat pump system. Finally, economic analysis of the proposed system for construction practices in Qatar was carried out. The performed analyses show that the reduction in the prime energy demand and, consequently, the greenhouse gas emissions for the GSHP is 19% when compared to the conventional air source heat pump system. The cooling energy requirements are certainly a key issue in warm climates. Vapour compression refrigeration systems involve high energy consumptions and environmental emissions and that makes this kind of technology unattractive. These aspects are most relevant in buildings which have high volume and high internal thermal loads as happens often in industrial buildings. For this kind of buildings a sustainable alternative to improve indoor thermal conditions is represented by evaporative cooling systems. Such systems take advantage of the water evaporation process to cool an air stream, which could cool the supplied air or which could be itself the supplied air to the conditioned environment. In this paper a wide analysis of evaporative cooling applications is presented referring to a sample industrial building characterized by relevant thermal discomfort. The thermal behaviour of building has been evaluated using the transient simulation program TRNSYS, in which different study cases are implemented on varying the cooling system. Moreover, a kind of indirect evaporative cooling systems, called cyclic evaporative cooling, in which the air temperature can be reduced below the wet bulb temperature, has been designed. Electricity is one of the most important resources for the growth and sustainability of the population. This paper assesses the energy consumption and user satisfaction of a simulated air conditioning system controlled with two different optimization algorithms. The algorithms are a genetic algorithm (GA), implemented from the state of the art, and a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) proposed in this paper; these algorithms control an air conditioning system considering user preferences. It is worth noting that we made several modifications to the objective function's definition to make it more robust. The energy-saving optimization is essential to reduce CO2 emissions and economic costs; on the other hand, it is desirable for the user to feel comfortable, yet it will entail a higher energy consumption. Thus, we integrate user preferences with energy-saving on a single weighted function and a Pareto bi-objective problem to increase user satisfaction and decrease electrical energy consumption. To assess the experimentation, we constructed a simulator by training a backpropagation neural network with real data from a laboratory's air conditioning system. Air conditioning accounts for a large share of energy usage in residential and tertiary sectors. Renewable energy technologies offer promising solutions to reduce the environmental impacts of meeting buildings' energy loads. The possibility of using the soil as a thermal reservoir for heating and cooling systems has gained growing attention in the last decade due to its high potential for energy saving. In this paper, the benefits achievable using ground source chillers for air conditioning in an office building located in Southern Italy are discussed. A multiple chillers system coupled with a borehole heat exchanger is investigated and compared to conventional air-cooled and water-cooled systems. The analysis relies on detailed modeling of the main plant components and exploits a novel approach to calculating the thermal resistance of the borehole. Results show that the ground coupled multiple chillers system achieves a 6.516 average energy efficiency ratio, which is 53.2% higher than the reference air-cooled system and 6.5% higher than the conventional water-cooled system. In addition, a hybrid scheme that integrates the borehole heat exchanger with a cooling tower achieves a 19.5% reduction in make-up water consumption. A sensitivity analysis demonstrates that increasing the borehole depth could lead to a significant variation in the system performance, with different trends for simple and hybrid configurations. Small and medium-sized commercial buildings (SMCB) are significant demand response resources, and it is important to develop grid-responsive control algorithms that exploit those resources and create financial benefits for building owners and HVAC service providers. Furthermore, unlike large-sized commercial buildings, there is an opportunity to have universally applicable control solutions for many SMCBs since those buildings have a consistent HVAC system configuration: SMCBs are commonly served by multiple-staged air conditioning units controlled by their own thermostats. Despite the demand response potential and scalability, however, very few control solutions are available for SMCBs. Typical model predictive control (MPC) and heuristic control approaches for cooling load shifting that lower thermostat setpoints before an electric price jump are suitable mainly for large-sized commercial buildings where a continuous capacity modulation is possible, e.g., via dampers in variable air volume terminal units. However, those approaches can cause undesired, high peaks for SMCBs due to the nature of ON/OFF unit staging and narrow thermostat deadbands. This could discourage the use of advanced grid-responsive controls for SMCBs due to the concern of high demand charges, and has to be resolved. This paper presents a MPC solution that overcomes this challenge. It has a hierarchical MPC structure where an upper level MPC is responsible for electrical load shifting in response to an electric price signal while a lower level MPC is responsible for coordinating compressor stages to eliminate unnecessary peaks and follows the setpoints determined by the upper level MPC. Two one-month, comprehensive laboratory tests have been carried out to demonstrate load shifting and cost savings for the algorithm. The increasing renewable energies bring more generation fluctuations to power systems, which puts forward a higher requirement on regulation services for maintaining the system balance. Existing traditional generating units probably cannot provide sufficient regulation services to solve this challenge. With the progress of information and communication technologies, it is possible to control demand-side flexible loads to provide regulation services. Among various flexible loads, central air conditionings (CACs) have huge regulation potential, because CACs account for about 40% of the total energy consumption in buildings. However, the operation of CACs is a complicated dynamic process with multiple subsystems and independent control loops. It is difficult to accurately regulate CACs to reach the required regulation services within the comfortable indoor temperature. To address this issue, this paper focuses on the quantitative assessment and two-layer coordinated controls of CACs to provide regulation services for the power system. Firstly, the thermal-electrical model of the CAC is established to describe the dynamic operation process of subsystems' characteristics. On this basis, a quantitative assessment method of CAC's regulation services is proposed by discretizing the thermal-electrical operation characteristics. Then, to aggregate multiple CACs to provide significant regulation capacities, an adaptive allocation method is proposed to satisfy the power system's regulation requirement based on different CACs' available regulation potential. Furthermore, an online distribution control method is developed to regulate each individual CAC's cooling capacity for guaranteeing the regulation accuracy and different occupants' comfortable temperatures. In the German industry Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems account for 11 %–20 % of the final energy consumption. Usually HVAC systems are dimensioned based on static extreme values and thus during most of the operation time, HVAC systems tend to be overdimensioned. In addition, the extensive literature review of 40 papers shows that often topics on model-based energy efficiency improvement are commonly performed for office or residential buildings, but rather rarely for production environments. Furthermore, the performance of control schemes for energy efficiency improvement are rarely compared with each other or incompletely compared with each other. In this publication, we use the framework of a Cyber–Physical Production System (CPPS) to compare the performance of four main control schemes, ranging from simple time-based control to model-predictive control, which has not been done in the context of battery production before. Over a fixed observation period, the four control schemes are transparently compared with each other in a case study using the example of the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig (BLB). Compared to the initial state, a significant reduction in final energy demand can be achieved with all examined control approaches, which is even up to 37.29% in case of the model-predictive control. Surprisingly, even simple control approaches, without any predictions, have a good energetic saving potential of up to 20.22% compared to the initial state, which is why they are initially recommended for practical implementation. Faults in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems cause increased energy consumption, degrading thermal comforts, growing operational cost and reduced system lifespan. An effective evaluation of fault effects is critical to the development of various fault diagnostics solutions, the improvement of operation maintenance and the optimization of monitoring systems. In the HVAC area, a majority of research work in evaluating fault effects was to analyze energy consumption impacts or thermal comfort impacts. However, a handful of research has been conducted on evaluating fault effects on various measurements, which are increasingly employed to monitor equipment's operation. Fault effects on various measurements may display different symptom patterns and present changed sensitivities when the equipment operates under various faults, severity levels, as well as operation conditions. However, a long-term observation of fault symptoms under various operation conditions, different fault types and severity levels to evaluate fault effects is extremely challenging. In this paper, a simulation-based framework was proposed to evaluate fault effects in fan coil units (FCUs). Two metrics namely fault symptom occurrence probability (SOP) and fault symptom daily continuous duration (SDCD) were developed to quantify fault symptoms under various FCU faults. A total of 18 common FCU faults at different severity levels were implemented on the developed HVACSIM+ simulation platform to obtain a full year fault inclusive data set for 48 fault simulation cases. The framework, as well as obtained SOP and SDCD distributions will benefit multiple folds such as the development of probability-based fault diagnostics inference approaches, optimization of sensor location, and fault prioritization. This paper investigates the impact of a three-dimensional (3D) air-conditioning (AC) system on cabin thermal comfort. Current AC systems are dependent on the cooling performance of Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems located inside the front instrument panel and supplying cold air from the front to the rear cabin. This results in a difference in perceived thermal comfort between the front and back seats due to a number of factors, including solar radiation through the windows, blower air path, and individual environmental differences. The 3D AC system was designed to improve the thermal comfort of passengers. In order to simulate the 3D AC system, an auxiliary blower was adapted for rear passengers. A cooling performance test and thermal comfort evaluation were conducted, with the blower at various positions in the cabin. According to the experiment results, four positions of the auxiliary blower showed cooling comfort ratings similar to those of the current HVAC system environment, and the thermal comfort ratings in the 3D AC experiment showed improvement. Due to the complexity and diversity of energy conversions in HVAC systems, this paper is focused on the central air conditioning systems with water-cooled chiller and its operational energy consumption. Through analyzing the energy flows of the five consecutive loops which extract energy from the conditioned spaces and rejects it to the environment, the global energy intensity index is first to be put forwarded and then the decomposition method which analyzes the influence of the specific consumption (e) and delivered fluid ratios (p) on global energy intensity is proposed. The important conclusion drawn from this method is that it is necessary to decrease both the specific consumption and delivered fluid ratios of the main energy users in order to decrease the global energy intensity of HVAC system. Finally, the global energy intensity of central air conditioning system of a twenty six-story office building in Guangzhou, China in design and real condition is compared and analyzed by e–p decomposition method as a case study. China has been the world's largest producer and consumer of air conditioners, and more and more RACs 1 1 The RACs is short for room air conditioners. would be owned by China's households along with the rapid economic development. Air Conditioner is also considered as one of the largest potential contributors to energy reduction among home appliances because of the huge energy consumption. Therefore, the national energy efficiency standards were issued to promote the use and production of high-efficient RACs. According to China's energy efficiency standards, this paper investigated the electricity savings and CO 2 emission reductions from RACs over the period of 2005–2025. The results indicate that the rural RAC market which develops more slowly than the urban one still has great potential, and government has to revise subsidy policies to make the standards more effective, especially for rural areas. In 2025, the total electricity consumption of RACs is projected to be 598–674 TW h, while the amount without energy efficiency standards is 753 TW h. From 2005 to 2025, the energy efficiency standards for RACs can save 1430–2540 TW h electricity and reduce 908.3–1610. 1 Mt CO 2 emissions in different scenarios. This paper examines thermal performance of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system. The GSHP system was installed in an office building in Nuremberg city of Germany. In order to evaluate system performance the GSHP system has been continuously monitored for 4 years. Heating and cooling performance of the GSHP system is analyzed based on the accumulated data. Major findings of this work include: (1) coefficient of performance (COP) is estimated to be 3.9 for a typical winter day and energy efficiency ratio (EER) is assessed to be 8.0 for a typical summer day. These results indicate that the GSHP system has a higher efficiency for building cooling than building heating. (2) For a long-term period, the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of the GSHP system is observed to increase by 8.7% annually, whereas the seasonal COP is decreased by 4.0% over a 4-year period. The heating and cooling performance of the GSHP system migrates in opposite trend is caused by the unevenly distributed heating and cooling load of the building. This phenomenon deserves serious attention in the design of future GSHP systems in order to avoid the reducing of energy efficiency over long-term operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes numerical modeling of heat and mass transfer in five different exchangers utilizing the Maisotsenko cycle for indirect evaporative cooling. For this purpose, numerical models are developed based on the modified ε-NTU method to perform thermal calculations of the indirect evaporative cooling process, thus quantifying overall performance of considered heat exchangers. Numerical simulation reveals many unique features of considered devices, enabling an accurate prediction of their performance. The results of computer simulation showed high efficiency gains that are sensitive to various inlet conditions, and allow for estimation of optimum operating conditions, including suitable climatic zones for the proposed unit using. Chilled water is a common cooling agent used in various industrial, commercial and institutional facilities. In conventional practice, chilled water is distributed via chilled water networks (CHWNs) in parallel configuration to provide required air conditioning and/or equipment cooling in the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. In this paper, process integration approach based on pinch analysis technique is used to address energy efficiency issues in the CHWN system for grassroots design problem. Graphical and algebraic targeting techniques are developed to identify the minimum chilled water flowrate needed to remove a given amount of heat load from the CHWN. Doing this leads to higher chilled water return temperature and enhanced energy efficiency of the HVAC system. A recent proposed network design technique is extended to synthesize the CHWN in a mixed series/parallel configuration. A novel concept of integrated cooling and chilled water networks (IWN) is also proposed in this work, with its targeting and design techniques presented. Abstract: Plug in electric vehicles are vehicles that use energy from the electric grid to provide tractive and accessory power to the vehicle. Due to the limited specific energy of energy storage systems, the energy requirements of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for cabin conditioning can significantly reduce their range between charges. Factors such as local ambient temperature, local solar radiation, local humidity, length of the trip and thermal soak have been identified as primary drivers of cabin conditioning loads and therefore of vehicle range. The objective of this paper is to develop a detailed systems-level approach to connect HVAC technologies and usage conditions to consumer-centric metrics of vehicle performance including energy consumption and range. This includes consideration of stochastic and transient inputs to the HVAC energy consumption model including local weather, solar loads, driving behavior, charging behavior, and regional passenger fleet population. The resulting engineering toolset is used to determine the summation of and geographical distribution of energy consumption by HVAC systems in electric vehicles, and to identify regions of US where the distributions of electric vehicle range are particularly sensitive to climate. The equipment energy efficiency improvement policy (EEEIP) is one of the important measures of energy conservation and emission reduction in various countries. However, due to the simultaneous implementation of variety policies, the effect of the single policy cannot be clearly reflected. In this paper, a method of identification and evaluation of EEEIP was proposed, and the application was verified by analyzing the example of EEEIP in Japan (Top Runner policy, TRP). Firstly, through the factor decomposition model, this paper studied the energy conservation and emission reduction potential of this policy area in Japan. Then, the TRP was identified by using moving windows and correlation analysis, and the impact of specific equipment in TRP was analyzed. Finally, through the calculation of the rebound effect of the carbon footprint (REC), this paper analyzed the energy consumption and emission reduction effects of TRP in the short-term and whole life cycle. It showed that the policy has a good effect in tertiary industry and transportation, while the effect in residential is poor. For life cycle, the TRP of air conditioning and passenger car can bring better CO2 emission reduction effect, but the emission reduction effect of lighting is basically offset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
