Black carbon (BC) has a significantly negative impact on air quality, climate and human health. Here we investigated the sources and health effects of BC in urban area of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) based on online data measured by Aerodyne soot particle high-resolution time of flight aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS). In urban PRD, BC particles mainly came from vehicle emissions especially heavy-duty vehicle exhausts (contributing 42.9 % of total BC mass concentration), long-range transport (27.6 %), and aged biomass combustion emissions (22.3 %). Indicated by source analysis using simultaneous aethalometer data, BC associated with local secondary oxidation and transport may also be originated from fossil fuel combustion, especially traffic sources in urban and surrounding areas. Size-resolved BC mass concentrations provided by SP-AMS, for the first time to our best knowledge, were used to calculate BC deposition in the human respiratory tract (HRT) of different populations (children, adults, and the elderly) by the Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model. We found that submicron BC was deposited more in the pulmonary (P) region (49.0-53.2 % of the total BC deposition dose), while less in the tracheobronchial (TB, 35.6-37.2 %) and head (HA, 11.2-13.8 %) regions. Adults suffered the highest BC deposition (1.19 μg day -1 ) than the elderly (1.09 μg day -1 ) and children (0.25 μg day -1 ). BC deposition rate was greater at night (especially 18:00-24:00) than during the daytime. The maximum deposition in the HRT was found for BC particles around 100 nm, mainly in deeper respiratory regions (TB and P), which may cause more serious health effects. Adults and the elderly group are confronted with the notable carcinogenic risk of BC in the urban PRD, up to 29 times higher than the threshold. Urbanization and fires perturb the quantities and composition of fine organic aerosol in the central Amazon, with ramifications for radiative forcing and public health. These disturbances include not only direct emissions of particulates and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors but also changes in the pathways through which biogenic precursors form SOA. The composition of ambient organic aerosol is complex and incompletely characterized, encompassing millions of potential structures relatively few of which have been synthesized and characterized. Through analysis of submicron aerosol samples from the Green Ocean Amazon (GoAmazon2014/5) field campaign by two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with machine learning, ∼1300 unique compounds were traced and characterized over two seasons. Fires and urban emissions produced chemically and interseasonally distinct impacts on product signatures, with only ∼50% of compounds observed in both seasons. Seasonally unique populations point to the importance of aqueous processing in Amazonian aerosol aging, but further mechanistic insights are impeded by limited product identity knowledge. Less than 10% of compounds were identifiable at an isomer-specific level. Overall, the findings (i) provide compositional characterization of anthropogenic influence on submicron organic aerosol in the Amazon, (ii) identify key season-to-season differences in chemical signatures, and (iii) highlight high-priority knowledge gaps in current speciated knowledge.

Straw burning comprises more than 30% of all types of burned biomass in Asia, while the estimation of the emitted aerosols' direct radiative forcing effect suffers from large uncertainties, especially when atmospheric aging processes are considered. In this study, the light absorption properties of primary and aged straw burning aerosols in open fire were characterized at 7 wavelengths ranging from 370 nm to 950 nm in a chamber. The primary rice, corn and wheat straw burning bulk aerosols together had a mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of 2.43 ± 1.36 m 2 g -1 at 520 nm and an absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) of 1.93 ± 0.71, while the primary sorghum straw burning bulk aerosols were characterized by a relatively lower MAE of 0.95 ± 0.54 m 2 g -1 and a higher AAE of 4.80 ± 0.68. Both the MAE and AAE of primary aerosols can be well parameterized by the (PM-BC)/BC ratio (in wt.). The MAE of black carbon (BC) increased by 11-190% during photoreactions equivalent to 16-60 h of atmospheric aging, which was positively correlated with the (PM-BC)/(BC) ratio. The MAE of organic aerosols first slightly increased or leveled off, and then decreased. Specifically, at 370 nm, the first growth/plateau stage lasted until OH exposure reached 0.47-1.29 × 10 11 molecule cm -3 s, and the following period exhibited decay rates of 1.0-2.8 × 10 -12 cm 3 molecule -1 s -1 against the OH radical, corresponding to half-lives of 46-134 h in a typical ambient condition. During photoreactions, competition among the lensing effect, growth/bleach of organic chromophores, and particle mass and size growth complicated the evolution of the direct radiative forcing effect. Atmospheric amines have attracted increasing attention due to their significant impact on new particle formation, particle hygroscopicity and particle optical properties. In this study, four low-molecule-weight amines were detected from PM 2.5 filter samples collected at an urban site of Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China in 2018 autumn. During the campaign, the mass concentrations of ambient particulate methylamine (MA, CH 3 NH 2 ), dimethylamine (DMA, (CH 3 ) 2 NH), trimethylamine (TMA, (CH 3 ) 3 N), and diethylamine (DEA, (C 2 H 5 ) 2 NH) were quantified at daily or 12-h resolution using an optimized Ion Chromatograph (IC) method. The total measured amine concentration was 297 ± 209 ng/m 3 , which can account for 0.76 ± 0.33% of PM 2.5 mass concentrations. The particulate amines in PRD urban area were dominated by MA (243 ± 179 ng/m 3 ), accounting for over 80% of total amines, then followed by DMA (49 ± 30 ng/m 3 , 16.5%), TMA (4 ± 2 ng/m 3 ) and DEA (1 ± 1 ng/m 3 ). Based on the correlation analysis, MA and DMA mainly presented as nitrate and sulfate salts. We speculate the amines tend to react with gas-phase HNO 3 or particle-phase nitrate to form particulate amine salts via local process in Guangzhou. As the relative humidity (RH) increased, enhanced partitioning of amine towards the particle phase was observed. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential of ambient air in Guangzhou, China was investigated using a field-deployed oxidation flow reactor (OFR). The OFR was used to mimic hours to weeks of atmospheric exposure to hydroxyl (OH) radicals within the 2-3 min residence time. A comprehensive investigation on the variation of VOCs and OVOCs as a function of OH exposure is shown. Substantial formation of organic acids and nitrogen-containing OVOC species were observed. Maximum SOA formation in the OFR was observed following 1-4 equiv days' OH exposure. SOA produced from known/measured VOC/IVOC precursors such as single-ring aromatics and long-chain alkanes can account for 52-75% of measured SOA under low NO x and 26-60% under high NO x conditions based on laboratory SOA yield parametrizations. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the contribution (8-20%) of long-chain (C 8 -C 20 ) alkane oxidation to OFR SOA formation was quantified from direct measurement. By additionally estimating contribution from unmeasured semivolatile and intermediate volatility compounds (S/IVOCs) that are committed with C 8 -C 20 alkanes, 64-100% of the SOA formation observed in the OFR can be explained, signifying the important contribution of S/IVOCs such as large cyclic alkanes to ambient SOA.

Despite the central role of reactive organic carbon (ROC) in the formation of secondary species that impact global air quality and climate, our assessment of ROC abundance and impacts is challenged by the diversity of species that contribute to it. We revisit measurements of ROC species made during two field campaigns in the United States: the 2013 SOAS campaign in forested Centreville, AL, and the 2010 CalNex campaign in urban Pasadena, CA. We find that average measured ROC concentrations are about twice as high in Pasadena (73.8 μgCsm -3 ) than in Centreville (36.5 μgCsm -3 ). However, the OH reactivity (OHR) measured at these sites is similar (20.1 and 19.3 s -1 ). The shortfall in OHR when summing up measured contributions is 31%, at Pasadena and 14% at Centreville, suggesting that there may be a larger reservoir of unmeasured ROC at the former site. Estimated O 3 production and SOA potential (defined as concentration × yield) are both higher during CalNex than SOAS. This analysis suggests that the ROC in urban California is less reactive, but due to higher concentrations of oxides of nitrogen and hydroxyl radicals, is more efficient in terms of O 3 and SOA production, than in the forested southeastern U.S.

Isocyanic acid (HNCO) is a potentially toxic atmospheric pollutant, whose atmospheric concentrations are hypothesized to be linked to adverse health effects. An earlier model study estimated that concentrations of isocyanic acid in China are highest around the world. However, measurements of isocyanic acid in ambient air have not been available in China. Two field campaigns were conducted to measure isocyanic acid in ambient air using a high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (ToF-CIMS) in two different environments in China. The ranges of mixing ratios of isocyanic acid are from below the detection limit (18 pptv) to 2.8 ppbv (5 min average) with the average value of 0.46 ppbv at an urban site of Guangzhou in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in fall and from 0.02 to 2.2 ppbv with the average value of 0.37 ppbv at a rural site in the North China Plain (NCP) during wintertime, respectively. These concentrations are significantly higher than previous measurements in North America. The diurnal variations of isocyanic acid are very similar to secondary pollutants (e.g., ozone, formic acid, and nitric acid) in PRD, indicating that isocyanic acid is mainly produced by secondary formation. Both primary emissions and secondary formation account for isocyanic acid in the NCP. The lifetime of isocyanic acid in a lower atmosphere was estimated to be less than 1 day due to the high apparent loss rate caused by deposition at night in PRD. Based on the steady state analysis of isocyanic acid during the daytime, we show that amides are unlikely enough to explain the formation of isocyanic acid in Guangzhou, calling for additional precursors for isocyanic acid. Our measurements of isocyanic acid in two environments of China provide important constraints on the concentrations, sources, and sinks of this pollutant in the atmosphere.

To mitigate air pollution in China, a legislative 'Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan' has been implemented by the Chinese government since 2013. There is, however, a lack of investigations for long-term trends in the composition, sources and evolution processes of PM 1 (particulate matter with diameter less than 1 μm) after the implementation. To evaluate the effectiveness of these control measures, we present a year-long real-time measurement of the chemical composition of PM 1 at an urban site in Beijing from November 2014 to November 2015, and the results are compared with previous studies from 2008 to 2013 to gain insights into the variations of the chemical composition and sources of PM 1 in Beijing. Large seasonal differences were observed in the mass concentrations of PM 1 species and general declining trend was observed in the last seven years. Specifically, the annual averages of mass concentrations in 2014-2015 decrease by 16-43% (PM 1 ), 23-43% (organic aerosol, OA), 38-68% (sulfate), 26-51% (nitrate), 18-33% (ammonium) and 27-38% (chloride) compared to those from 2008 to 2013. During winter and summer, the seasonal mass concentrations of sulfate and nitrate show more significant declines especially in summer 2008 (79% and 81%) and summer 2011 (76% and 77%). The nitrate-to-sulfate ratio is higher in 2014-2015 (1.5 ± 0.6) than that in 2013 (1.0 ± 0.3), largely due to significant reduction in SO 2 emissions, suggesting that nitrate is becoming more important than sulfate in particulate pollution in Beijing. OA is the dominant PM 1 fraction (>45%) in all seasons and the mass concentrations/contributions of both primary and secondary OA show different seasonality. As for the more oxidized oxygenated OA (MO-OOA) and less oxidized oxygenated OA (LO-OOA), the contributions of MO-OOA are much higher than those of LO-OOA (27-62% vs. 6-26%) in both high-pollution and low-pollution days. Aqueous-phase processes are found to facilitate the formation of MO-OOA while photochemical oxidation formation is a major contributor of LO-OOA in winter, and photochemical oxidation plays a major role in the formation of MO-OOA in summer and fall. Anthropogenic emissions alter secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation chemistry from naturally emitted isoprene. We use correlations of tracers and tracer ratios to provide new perspectives on sulfate, NO x , and particle acidity influencing isoprene-derived SOA in two isoprene-rich forested environments representing clean to polluted conditions-wet and dry seasons in central Amazonia and Southeastern U.S. summer. We used a semivolatile thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph (SV-TAG) and filter samplers to measure SOA tracers indicative of isoprene/HO 2 (2-methyltetrols, C 5 -alkene triols, 2-methyltetrol organosulfates) and isoprene/NO x (2-methylglyceric acid, 2-methylglyceric acid organosulfate) pathways. Summed concentrations of these tracers correlated with particulate sulfate spanning three orders of magnitude, suggesting that 1 μg m -3 reduction in sulfate corresponds with at least ∼0.5 μg m -3 reduction in isoprene-derived SOA. We also find that isoprene/NO x pathway SOA mass primarily comprises organosulfates, ∼97% in the Amazon and ∼55% in Southeastern United States. We infer under natural conditions in high isoprene emission regions that preindustrial aerosol sulfate was almost exclusively isoprene-derived organosulfates, which are traditionally thought of as representative of an anthropogenic influence. We further report the first field observations showing that particle acidity correlates positively with 2-methylglyceric acid partitioning to the gas phase and negatively with the ratio of 2-methyltetrols to C 5 -alkene triols.

Particle phase state plays a key role in gas-particle partitioning, heterogeneous and multiphase reactions, and secondary aerosol formation. In this work, the rebound fraction and chemical composition of submicron particles were simultaneously measured to investigate the particle phase state and its link to chemical composition in a subtropical coastal urban city (Shenzhen, China). Submicron particles were found to be in the liquid state for most of the measurement period in spring. During the sampling time, both high relative humidity (RH, ranged from 40% to 93%) and inorganic mass fraction in particles (62.6 ± 12.4% of dry particles, on average) resulted in abundant aerosol liquid water (43 ± 6% in the wet PM 1 , on average), which may liquefy the particles. Considering the high frequency of ambient RH > 60% and large inorganic mass fraction in aerosol particles, we deduced that particles were in the liquid state throughout the year in coastal urban areas, where this study was performed. The liquid phase particles may accelerate the mass transfer of reactive trace gases and multiphase reactions, thereby enhanced secondary aerosol formation, further resulting in a rapid growth in aerosol mass. Our work suggested that in regions heavily impacted by SO 2 and NO x emissions, especially in developing countries, the presence of inorganics could significantly impact the phase state of ambient aerosol particles, and thus the mixing state of inorganic and organic matter should be taken into account for the investigation of the aerosol phase state in urban environments.

The chemical complexity of atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) has caused substantial uncertainties in understanding its origins and environmental impacts. Here, we provide constraints on OA origins through compositional characterization with molecular-level details. Our results suggest that secondary OA (SOA) from monoterpene oxidation accounts for approximately half of summertime fine OA in Centreville, AL, a forested area in the southeastern United States influenced by anthropogenic pollution. We find that different chemical processes involving nitrogen oxides, during days and nights, play a central role in determining the mass of monoterpene SOA produced. These findings elucidate the strong anthropogenic-biogenic interaction affecting ambient aerosol in the southeastern United States and point out the importance of reducing anthropogenic emissions, especially under a changing climate, where biogenic emissions will likely keep increasing., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Understanding the evolution of aerosols in the atmosphere is of great importance for improving air quality and reducing aerosol-related uncertainties in global climate simulations. Here, a unique haze episode at a regional receptor site near the East China Sea was examined as a case study of the aging process of atmospheric aerosols during transport. An increase in photochemical age from 5 h to more than 25 h and a progressive increase in the fitted mean particle diameter from 70 nm to approximately 300 nm were observed. According to the pollution features and meteorology conditions involved, pollution accumulation (PA), sea breeze (SB), and land breeze (LB) periods were identified. Concentrations of black carbon (BC), hydrocarbon-like organic aerosols (HOA), semi-volatile oxidized organic aerosols (SV-OOA), and nitrate increased by 7-fold up to 39-fold when the air masses passed through Taizhou, a nearby city. In addition, nitrate and SV-OOA dominated the aerosol composition in the urban outflow plumes (52% and 18%, respectively), yet they gradually decreased in concentration during transport. In contrast, sulfate and the low-volatile oxidized organic aerosols (LV-OOA) exhibited more regional footprints and potentially have similar formation mechanisms. The atomic oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio also increased from 0.45 to 0.9, thereby suggesting that rapid formation of highly oxidized secondary organic aerosols (SOA) occurred during transport. Overall, these results provide valuable insight into the evolution of the chemical and physical features of aerosol pollution during transport and also highlight the need for regulatory controls of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and VOCs to improve air quality on different scales., (Copyright © 2016. To investigate the chemical compositions, sources, and aging processes of submicron particles (PM1), a comprehensive field campaign was conducted in Guangzhou urban area of China during the autumn (October–November) of 2018. The average mass concentration of PM1 was 35.6 ± 20.8 µg m−3, which was mainly contributed by organic aerosols (OA, 42%), then followed by sulfate (25%) and inorganic nitrate (11%). The inorganic nitrate was found to be the main driving component (up to ∼50%) to account for the fast increase of PM1 during the polluted periods of Guangzhou autumn. The promotion effects of sulfate, aerosol liquid water content, and particles acidity on nitrate formation were systematically discussed. Source apportionment results showed 72% of OA in Guangzhou autumn was contributed by secondary OA (SOA), and 28% of primary OA (POA), including vehicle emission related hydrocarbon‐like OA (HOA, 16%), nitrogen‐containing OA (NOA, 3%) and cooking OA (COA, 8%). To explore the aging processes of OA, the dynamic variations of OA and its oxidation level as a function of ambient photochemical age are shown. Using an in situ field‐deployed oxidation flow reactor, the heterogeneous reaction rate coefficients of ambient POA with OH radicals (kOH) were estimated to be 4.0–5.4 × 10−13 cm3 molecules−1 s−1, which is equivalent to a lifetime of POA >2 weeks. The long heterogeneous lifetime of POA supports gas phase oxidation was the major pathway for ambient OA aging. The OH uptake coefficient (γOH) was estimated to be 0.76–0.84, underlining that OH radicals can be taken up efficiently on ambient aerosols.
