Abstract: Renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE) policies have far-reaching implications for energy security, climate change, economic competitiveness, pollution, and human livelihood. For these reasons, REEE has become a national priority for the Chinese government, particularly since 2005. This paper aims to critically review China's REEE policies in six sectors: electricity, industry, transportation, buildings, and local government. In addition to examining the progress China has made in the development and implementation of REEE policies, this review also identifies limitations and room for improvement. Finally, five policy recommendations are presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article focuses on China's political and economic policies concerning climate change and green industry. It states that China resisted international calls for it to commit to binding emissions reduction targets and talks about obstructionism by Chinese negotiators during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December of 2009. It mentions that China suffers from serious environmental degradation including a scarcity of drinkable water and severe air pollution. It comments that Chinese leadership acknowledges the effects of a warming climate and has been aggressively pursuing green technologies and policies including reforestation efforts and renewable energies such as wind turbines, solar panels, and hydroelectric power.
