Metaheuristic optimization algorithms (MHA) play a significant role in obtaining the best (optimal) values of the system's parameters to improve its performance. This role is significantly apparent when dealing with systems where the classical analytical methods fail. Fractional-order (FO) systems have not yet shown an easy procedure to deal with the determination of their optimal parameters through traditional methods. In this paper, a recent, systematic. And comprehensive review is presented to highlight the role of MHA in obtaining the best set of gains and orders for FO controllers. The systematic review starts by exploring the most relevant publications related to the MHA and the FO controllers. The study is focused on the most popular controllers such as the FO-PI, FO-PID, FO Type-1 fuzzy-PID, and FO Type-2 fuzzy-PID. The time domain is restricted in the articles published through the last decade (2014:2023) in the most reputed databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. The identified number of papers, from the entire databases, has reached 850 articles. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology was applied to the initial set of articles to be screened and filtered to end up with a final list that contains 82 articles. Then, a thorough and comprehensive study was applied to the final list. The results showed that Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is the most attractive optimizer to the researchers to be used in the optimal parameters identification of the FO controllers as it attains about 25% of the published papers. In addition, the papers that used PSO as an optimizer have gained a high citation number despite the fact that the Chaotic Atom Search Optimization (ChASO) is the highest one, but it is used only once. Furthermore, the Integral of the Time-Weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) is the best nominated cost function. Based on our comprehensive literature review, this appears to be the first review paper that systematically and comprehensively addresses the optimization of the parameters of the fractional-order PI, PID, Type-1, and Type-2 fuzzy controllers with the use of MHAs. This paper introduces a new variant of the Bees Algorithm (BA) called Bees Algorithm with 2-parameter (BA2), which is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm designed to solve continuous and combinatorial optimisation problems. The proposed algorithm simplified the BA's parameters by combining exploration and exploitation strategies while preserving the algorithm's core principles to efficiently search for optimal solutions. The paper provides a detailed description of the algorithm's core principles and its application to two engineering problems, the air-cooling system design (ACSD) and the printed circuit board assembly sequence optimisation (PASO). The results show that BA2 outperforms previous versions of the basic BA in terms of convergence speed and solution quality. However, the authors acknowledge that further research is needed to test the scalability and generalisability of the algorithm to larger and more diverse optimisation problems. The university course timetable problem (UCTP) is known to be NP-hard, with solution complexity growing exponentially with the problem size. This paper introduces an algorithm that effectively tackles UCTPs by employing a combination of exploration and exploitation strategies. The algorithm comprises two main components. Firstly, it utilizes a genetic algorithm (GA) to explore the search space and discover a solution within the global optimum region. Secondly, it enhances the solution by exploiting the region using an iterated local search (ILS) algorithm. The algorithm is tested on two common variants of UCTP: the post-enrollment-based course timetable problem (PE-CTP) and the curriculum-based course timetable problem (CB-CTP). The computational results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm yields competitive outcomes when compared empirically against other existing algorithms. Furthermore, a t-test comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms is conducted. The experimental findings also highlight that the hybrid approach effectively overcomes the limitation of local optima, which is encountered when solely employing GA in conjunction with local search. In recent years, metaheuristic methods have shown remarkable efficacy in resolving complex combinatorial challenges across a broad spectrum of fields. Nevertheless, the escalating complexity of these problems necessitates the continuous development of innovative techniques to enhance the performance and reliability of these methods. This paper aims to contribute to this endeavor by examining the impact of solution initialization methods on the performance of a hybrid algorithm applied to the set union knapsack problem (SUKP). Three distinct solution initialization methods, random, greedy, and weighted, have been proposed and evaluated. These have been integrated within a sine cosine algorithm employing k-means as a binarization procedure. Through testing on medium- and large-sized SUKP instances, the study reveals that the solution initialization strategy influences the algorithm's performance, with the weighted method consistently outperforming the other two. The search for a better approach to design a convenient controlling scheme is one of the main challenges of the research field related to power converters. This paper brings forward a significant contribution as part of this challenge. In this regard, novel approaches have been proposed for both controller scheme and tuning algorithm. In terms of controlling scheme, a fractional-order proportional–integral–derivative (FOPID) controller was used alongside the Bode's ideal transfer function to achieve optimum performance of a buck converter system. To achieve a greater performance of the FOPID controller, a novel metaheuristic algorithm, which consists of a balanced structure in terms of explorative and exploitative phases, has also been developed by hybridizing the hunger games search algorithm with simulated annealing technique. The proposed hybrid algorithm helped tuning the FOPID controller optimally. The proposed algorithm and controlling scheme have been proved to be a better approach for controlling a buck converter system in terms of time and frequency domains along with disturbance rejection. To further verify the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid algorithm–based controlling scheme, it was compared with other reported and capable approaches which have also confirmed the greater performance of the proposed approach. Metaheuristics are algorithms that are used to solve difficult optimization problems. They are typically stochastic approaches; hence, proper statistical tests are needed to compare them. However, choosing an appropriate statistical test is not trivial given that each test requires some assumptions to be true before the test can be used. Moreover, the p-values associated with a statistical test is usually difficult to interpret. In this paper, we propose the use of Laplace's rule of succession to compare different metaheuristic approaches. The rule is simple, intuitive and easy to compute. It can be used alone or to complement a statistical test. The process of using the rule for comparison purposes is clearly explained and applied to a typical scenario encountered in the field of metaheuristics. In this scenario, an improved variant of an existing metaheuristic algorithm is proposed. To evaluate the performance of the two algorithms, Laplace's rule and a traditional statistical test are used. Analysis of the results and how to interpret them are provided. Multi‐objective optimization problems frequently appear in many diverse research areas and application domains. Metaheuristics, as efficient techniques to solve them, need to be easily accessible to users with different expertise and programming skills. In this context, metaheuristic optimization frameworks are helpful, as they provide popular algorithms, customizable components and additional facilities to conduct experiments. Due to the broad range of available tools, this paper presents a systematic evaluation and experimental comparison of 10 frameworks, covering from multi‐purpose, consolidated tools to recent libraries specifically designed for multi‐objective optimization. The evaluation is organized around seven characteristics: search components and techniques, configuration, execution, utilities, external support and community, software implementation and performance. An analysis of code metrics and a series of experiments serves to assess the last two features. Lesson learned and open issues are also discussed as part of the comparative study. The outcomes of the evaluation process reveal a contrasted support to recent advances in multi‐objective optimization, with a lack of novel algorithms and variety of metaheuristics other than evolutionary algorithms. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) play a crucial role in securing networks and identifying malicious activity. This is a critical problem in cyber security. In recent years, metaheuristic optimization algorithms and deep learning techniques have been applied to IDS to improve their accuracy and efficiency. Generally, optimization algorithms can be used to boost the performance of IDS models. Deep learning methods, such as convolutional neural networks, have also been used to improve the ability of IDS to detect and classify intrusions. In this paper, we propose a new IDS model based on the combination of deep learning and optimization methods. First, a feature extraction method based on CNNs is developed. Then, a new feature selection method is used based on a modified version of Growth Optimizer (GO), called MGO. We use the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) to boost the search process of the GO. Extensive evaluation and comparisons have been conducted to assess the quality of the suggested method using public datasets of cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) environments. The applied techniques have shown promising results in identifying previously unknown attacks with high accuracy rates. The efficiency and the effectiveness of a machine learning (ML) model are greatly influenced by feature selection (FS), a crucial preprocessing step in machine learning that seeks out the ideal set of characteristics with the maximum accuracy possible. Due to their dominance over traditional optimization techniques, researchers are concentrating on a variety of metaheuristic (or evolutionary) algorithms and trying to suggest cutting-edge hybrid techniques to handle FS issues. The use of hybrid metaheuristic approaches for FS has thus been the subject of numerous research works. The purpose of this paper is to critically assess the existing hybrid FS approaches and to give a thorough literature review on the hybridization of different metaheuristic/evolutionary strategies that have been employed for supporting FS. This article reviews pertinent documents on hybrid frameworks that were published in the period from 2009 to 2022 and offers a thorough analysis of the used techniques, classifiers, datasets, applications, assessment metrics, and schemes of hybridization. In this paper, we study the quadratic assignment problem with a rank-one cost matrix (QAP-R1). Four integer-programming formulations are introduced of which three are assumed to have partial integer data. Unlike the standard quadratic assignment problem, some of our formulations can solve reasonably large instances of QAP-R1 with impressive running times and are faster than some metaheuristics. Pairwise relative strength of the LP relaxations of these formulations are also analyzed from theoretical and experimental points of view. Finally, we present a new metaheuristic algorithm to solve QAP-R1 along with its computational analysis. Our study offers the first systematic experimental analysis of integer-programming models and heuristics for QAP-R1. The benchmark instances with various characteristics generated for our study are made available to the public for future research work. Some new polynomially solvable special cases are also introduced. Summary of Contribution: This paper aims to advance our knowledge and ability in solving an important special case of the quadratic assignment problem. It shows how to exploit inherent properties of an optimization problem to achieve computational advantages, a strategy that was followed by researchers in model building and algorithm developments for decades. Optimization problems are prevalent in almost all areas and hence optimization algorithms are crucial for a myriad of real-world applications. Deterministic optimization algorithms tend to be computationally costly and time-consuming. Hence, heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms are more favoured as they provide near-optimal solutions in an acceptable amount of time. Swarm intelligence algorithms are being increasingly used for optimization problems owing to their simplicity and good performance. The Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) is one which is inspired by the swarming behaviours of dragonflies, and it has been proven to have a superior performance than other algorithms in multiple applications. Hence, it is worth considering its application to the traveling salesman problem which is a predominant discrete optimization problem. The original DA is only suitable for solving continuous optimization problems and, although there is a binary version of the algorithm, it is not easily adapted for solving discrete optimization problems like TSP. We have previously proposed a discrete adapted DA algorithm suitable for TSP. However, it has low effectiveness, and it has not been used for large TSP problems. In this paper, we propose an optimized discrete adapted DA by using the steepest ascent hill climbing algorithm as a local search. The algorithm is applied to a TSP problem modelling a package delivery system in the Kuala Lumpur area and to benchmark TSP problems, and it is found to have a higher effectiveness than the discrete adapted DA and some other swarm intelligence algorithms. Optimization is a very important issue to efficiently solve engineering problems. The clear comprehension of the elements and processes of optimizer algorithms is fundamental to ensure that engineer students are capable to apply, tune, and design new algorithms. This paper presents an educational platform based on LEGO© EV3 and MATLAB to assist the learning of the principles of classical and metaheuristic optimization algorithms at undergraduate level, by providing a simple and easy-to-follow teaching setup. The proposed study aims to accompany students through the learning of optimization fundamentals by building hands-on robotic experiments. The proposed educational platform has been successfully applied to several undergraduate courses within the Electronics Department at the University of Guadalajara. Many metaheuristic approaches are inherently stochastic. In order to compare such methods, statistical tests are needed. However, choosing an appropriate test is not trivial, given that each test has some assumptions about the distribution of the underlying data that must be true before it can be used. Permutation tests (P-Tests) are statistical tests with minimal number of assumptions. These tests are simple, intuitive and nonparametric. In this paper, we argue researchers in the field of metaheuristics to adopt P-Tests to compare their algorithms. We define two statistic tests and then present an algorithm that uses them to compute the p-value. The proposed process is used to compare 5 metaheuristic algorithms on 10 benchmark functions. The resulting p-values are compared with the p-values of two widely used statistical tests. This paper presents a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the geometrical features of circles, called the circle search algorithm (CSA). The circle is the most well-known geometric object, with various features including diameter, center, perimeter, and tangent lines. The ratio between the radius and the tangent line segment is the orthogonal function of the angle opposite to the orthogonal radius. This angle plays an important role in the exploration and exploitation behavior of the CSA. To evaluate the robustness of the CSA in comparison to other algorithms, many independent experiments employing 23 famous functions and 3 real engineering problems were carried out. The statistical results revealed that the CSA succeeded in achieving the minimum fitness values for 21 out of the tested 23 functions, and the p-value was less than 0.05. The results evidence that the CSA converged to the minimum results faster than the comparative algorithms. Furthermore, high-dimensional functions were used to assess the CSA's robustness, with statistical results revealing that the CSA is robust to high-dimensional problems. In recent years, significant attentions have been devoted to design of metaheuristic optimization algorithms in order to solve optimization problems. Metaheuristic optimizers are methods which are inspired by observing the phenomena occurring in nature. In this paper, a comprehensive and exhaustive review has been carried out on water cycle algorithm (WCA) and its applications in a wide variety of study fields. The WCA is one of the novel metaheuristic optimization algorithms which is inspired by water cycle process in nature and how streams and rivers flow into the sea. Good exploitation and exploration capabilities have made the WCA a good alternative for solving large-scale optimization problems. Due to its capabilities and strengths, the WCA has been utilized in many and various majors including mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering, water resources and hydropower engineering, computer engineering, mathematics, and so forth. The main goal of this paper is to outline a new approach to represent the randomness that we can find in different metaheuristics as a stochastic process which helps in the performance of the analyzed metaheuristic. This new way of viewing randomness is based on the behavior of sine waves that we can find in many situations in nature or in physics laws. In this paper, we evaluate this proposed randomness with three metaheuristics: the grey wolf optimizer, firefly algorithm and flower pollination algorithm, with the goal of studying the performance of the proposed randomness method in different types of metaheuristics. A set of standard benchmark functions were used to test the proposed randomness method, which are classified as unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions. In addition, the benchmark functions of the CEC 2015 Competition are used. Finally, we present tests with functions that were presented in the CEC 2017 competition for constrained real-parameter optimization. We also present a comparative study of the analyzed metaheuristics, and this comparison is between their original randomness method and the proposed randomness method for each algorithm. Data analysis becomes more important since rapid technology developments. In data analysis, data clustering is one of the very useful approaches. It can reveal important information hiding inside the dataset by organizing the instances based on their similarity. The objectives of data clustering are maximizing dissimilarity between clusters and minimizing dissimilarity within clusters. In order to construct a good clustering results, many clustering algorithms have been proposed, including the metaheuristic-based clustering algorithms. Recently, a new metaheuristic algorithm named gradient evolution has been proposed. This algorithm shows a good performance on solving the optimization problems. Therefore, this paper employs this GE algorithm for solving the clustering problem. In order to obtain a better clustering result, this paper considers multi-objective clustering instead of single-objective clustering. In this paper, the original GE algorithm is improved so then it is suitable for the multi-objective problem. The proposed modification includes the procedure for vector updating and jumping which involves Pareto rank assignment. In addition, it also employs K-means algorithm to provide the final clustering result. The proposed algorithm is verified using some benchmark datasets. It is also compared with some other multi-objective metaheuristic-based clustering algorithms. Parameter-free algorithms are of an increasing interest in applications that require out-of-the-box solving techniques. For instance, scheduling in volatile environments or control parameters optimisation often requires flexible solving approaches without the need to tune or retune the parameters. In addition, parameter-free algorithms are usually beneficial in solving previously unexplored real-world problem instances. In this paper, we propose a parameter-free local search strategy to solve graph colouring, which is the underlying problem for a number of scheduling applications. Two variants of parameter-free local search are computationally investigated: PFLS-A and PFLS-B. Both of these algorithms are based on accepting strictly improving moves and operating as a random walk if no strictly improving move is found. PFLS-A and PFLS-B differ in randomised versus systematic exploration of the neighbourhood of the current solution. Their cooperative variant CPFLS is also proposed. We compare the results of these three algorithms to the results obtained by 13 other local search methods from the literature. CPFLS provides better or equal results as the other local search algorithms in 67.25 % of per-instance comparisons. This is without employing any explicit or implicit parameters that are usually used in metaheuristics. This paper presents a powerful swarm intelligence metaheuristic optimization algorithm called Dynamic Cat Swarm Optimization. The formulation is through modifying the existing Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm. The original Cat Swarm Optimization suffers from the shortcoming of "premature convergence," which is the possibility of entrapment in local optima which usually happens due to the off balance between exploration and exploitation phases. Therefore, the proposed algorithm suggests a new method to provide a proper balance between these phases by modifying the selection scheme and the seeking mode of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 23 classical test functions, 10 modern test functions (CEC 2019) and a real-world scenario are used. In addition, the dimension-wise diversity metric is used to measure the percentage of the exploration and exploitation phases. The optimization results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which ranks first compared to several well-known algorithms available in the literature. Furthermore, statistical methods and graphs are also used to further confirm the outperformance of the algorithm. A novel nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm, called the quantum firefly algorithm, is proposed in this paper. The algorithm imitates (a) the social behaviour of fireflies mating in nature, (b) laws of quantum physics, and (c) laws of natural evolution. The algorithm combines the powers of two well-known algorithms: the firefly algorithm and the quantum genetic algorithm. The proposed quantum firefly algorithm's performance is tested on 15 mathematical test functions and one structural design problem. Feature transformation methods can be used effectively to improve the performance of the machine learning techniques, such as classification and clustering, via enhancing the discrimination among the samples. Additionally, binary representation of features may be necessary in several circumstances. For example, distributed systems may have limited bandwidth, storage, and energy that necessitate rough quantization of the measurements. This paper proposes a random projection-based feature transformation method that maps the data points from the original space into a new binary space. In the proposed transformation method, the random projection process is formulated as an optimization problem. A modified chaotic version of the sine–cosine algorithm is used to find the optimal random projector. The performance of the proposed transformation method is validated using 15 standard UCI benchmark datasets against the linear discernment analysis. Moreover, it is compared to other metaheuristic-based feature reduction methods including the gray wolf optimizer, the genetic algorithm, and the antlion optimizer. In this paper, we propose a fast and scalable, yet effective, metaheuristic called FILO to solve large-scale instances of the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem. Our approach consists of a main iterative part, based on the Iterated Local Search paradigm, which employs a carefully designed combination of existing acceleration techniques, as well as novel strategies to keep the optimization localized, controlled, and tailored to the current instance and solution. A Simulated Annealing-based neighbor acceptance criterion is used to obtain a continuous diversification, to ensure the exploration of different regions of the search space. Results on extensively studied benchmark instances from the literature, supported by a thorough analysis of the algorithm's main components, show the effectiveness of the proposed design choices, making FILO highly competitive with existing state-of-the-art algorithms, both in terms of computing time and solution quality. Finally, guidelines for possible efficient implementations, algorithm source code, and a library of reusable components are open-sourced to allow reproduction of our results and promote further investigations. In this paper, we propose a general solution approach for a broad class of vehicle routing problems that all use a single vehicle, composed of a truck and a detachable trailer, to serve a set of customers with known demand and accessibility constraints. A more general problem, called the extended single truck and trailer routing problem (XSTTRP), is used as a common baseline to describe and model this class of problems. In particular, the XSTTRP contains, all together, a variety of vertex types previously considered only separately: truck customers, vehicle customers with and without parking facilities, and parking-only locations. To solve the XSTTRP, we developed a fast and effective hybrid metaheuristic, consisting of an iterative core part, in which routes that define high-quality solutions are stored in a pool. Eventually, a set-partitioning-based postoptimization selects the best combination of routes that forms a feasible solution from the pool. The algorithm is tested on extensively studied problems from the literature, such as the multiple depot vehicle routing problem, the location routing problem, the single truck and trailer routing problem with satellite depots, and the single truck and trailer routing problem. Finally, computational results and a thorough analysis of the main algorithm's components on newly designed XSTTRP instances are provided. The obtained results show that the proposed hybrid metaheuristic is highly competitive with previous approaches designed to solve specific specialized problems, both in terms of computing time and solution quality. New metaheuristic algorithms have soared over the past ten years. A common practice in proposing a new algorithm is validating it on several benchmark functions and engineering problems. Although CEC benchmark problems are specifically designed to validate the performance of new meta-heuristics, engineering design problems from pressure vessels to springs have been used in hundreds of papers to prove algorithm efficiency. To date, no benchmark practices have been established yet, i.e., researchers design their own benchmark to validate their algorithm. Thus, the high number of new algorithms combined with the high number of different benchmarking setups complicates the comparing and validating processes. In this paper, we study benchmark practices related to engineering applications. In particular, our exhaustive qualitative systematic review focuses on metaheuristics applied to the tension/compression spring design problem (TCSDP). The aim of this study is threefold: (i) evaluate where the field stands in regards of algorithm performance on the TCSDP, (ii) evaluate benchmarking practices, and (iii) facilitate future algorithm comparison. For these purposes, we first review all the existing metaheuristics applied to the TCSDP in their first publication. For each paper, we gather the data regarding the problem definition, the simulation setup, and the optimized design. We evaluated the data through several metrics to find the best-optimized design so far. Our findings and analysis concluded that the field of metaheuristics and its benchmarking practice have not reached maturity yet. This paper deals with strip packing metaheuristic algorithm selection using data mining techniques. Given a set of solved strip packing problem instances, the relationship between the instance characteristics and algorithm performance is learned and is used to predict the best algorithms to solve a new set of unseen problem instances. A framework capable of modelling this relationship for an automated packing algorithm selection is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is evaluated in the context of a large set of strip packing problem instances and the state-of-the-art strip packing algorithms. In this paper, we consider the contention aware task scheduling problem on a grid topology of processors. By contention awareness, we mean that simultaneous communication on a link has to be serialized. To solve this problem, we propose several nature inspired metaheuristic algorithms: Simulated Annealing (SA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bat Algorithm (BA), Cuckoo Search (CS), and Firefly Algorithm (FA). We perform benchmark evaluation of these algorithms for the Normalized Schedule Length (NSL) parameter. Agent-based metaheuristics computing paradigm (EMAS) has been proposed over 20 years ago by Cetnarowicz. Since then, many efforts were made in order to evaluate, formally analyze and further develop this paradigm towards creating new algorithms as EMAS hybrids, or EMAS-inspired techniques. However, at the same time a significant work has been done in order to build efficient software frameworks supporting this (and similar) computing paradigms. These frameworks were based not only on classic object-oriented programming, but also on functional approach and recently also utilizing heterogeneous infrastructure. This paper presents an overview of the most important findings in this area, including novel ways of processing the agents and component orientation, which allow for both high flexibility and high efficiency of provided solutions. Addressing the latter aspect is especially challenging, since it requires substantial changes in the algorithms for generating initial feasible solutions (construction heuristic) and for modifying existing solutions (improvement heuristics). Metaheuristics, providing high level guidelines for heuristic optimisation, have successfully been applied to many complex problems over the past decades. However, their performances often vary depending on the choice of the initial settings for their parameters and operators along with the characteristics of the given problem instance handled. Hence, there is a growing interest into designing adaptive search methods that automate the selection of efficient operators and setting of their parameters during the search process. In this study, an adaptive binary parallel evolutionary algorithm, referred to as ABPEA, is introduced for solving the uncapacitated facility location problem which is proven to be an NP-hard optimisation problem. The approach uses a unary and two other binary operators. A reinforcement learning mechanism is used for assigning credits to operators considering their recent impact on generating improved solutions to the problem instance in hand. An operator is selected adaptively with a greedy policy for perturbing a solution. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated on a set of well-known benchmark instances using ORLib and M*, and its scaling capacity by running it with different starting points on an increasing number of threads. Parameters are adjusted to derive the best configuration of three different rewarding schemes, which are instant, average and extreme. A performance comparison to the other state-of-the-art algorithms illustrates the superiority of ABPEA. This paper proposes a novel population based optimization algorithm called Andean Condor Algorithm (ACA) for solving cell formation problems. The ACA metaheuristic is inspired by the movement pattern of the Andean Condor when it searches for food. This pattern of movement corresponds to the flight distance traveled by the Andean Condor from its nest to the place where food is found. This distance varies depending on the seasons of the year. The ACA metaheuristic presents a balance of its population through a performance indicator based on the average quality of the population's fitness. This balance determines the number of Andean Condors that will perform an exploration or intensification movements. ACA metaheuristics have a flexible design. It allows to easily integrate specific heuristics according to the optimization problem to be solved. Two types of computational experiments have been performed. According to the results obtained it has been possible to determine that ACA is an algorithm with an outstanding RPD% in relation to the algorithms BAT, MBO and PSO, robust and with a convergence which tends not to be trapped in the local optimums. Besides, according to the non-parametric multiple comparison, results have been obtained in which the ACA metaheuristic has significant differences in relation to the BAT, MBO and PSO algorithms. The conserved regions between genomic sequences extracted from the different species give important information about the complex regulatory mechanisms of the transcription and translation processes. However, identification of these regulatory regions that are short DNA segments and called motifs is a major challenge in bioinformatics. With the avalanche of the newly sequenced genomic data and our evolving understanding of the characteristics of the regulatory mechanisms, there is still a need for developing fast and accurate motif discovery techniques or considerably refinement on the existing models. In this paper, we presented two different Artificial Bee Colony algorithm based motif discovery techniques and investigated their serial and parallelized implementations. Nowadays most industries do not integrate product, process and energy data. Costs due to energy consumption are often considered externalities and energy efficiency is not deemed a relevant performance criterion. In energy-intensive processes, as injection moulding, the specific energy consumption, embedded inside the same products, depends on the machine-product combinations. Multi-objective scheduling, including the energy data acquired from shop floor and allocation criteria, is a valuable approach to improve energy efficiency. This paper presents the extension of a commercial detailed scheduling support system developed within a regional Italian project aiming at providing tools to manufacturing industry for improving energy efficiency. The project designed a monitoring system developed by instrumenting injection moulding presses to acquire the energy consumption for each product-machine combination. The commercial scheduling system was extended by implementing a multi-objective metaheuristic scheduling approach. The experimental assessment of the proposed approach involved a major producer of plastic dispensers. The extended algorithm simultaneously optimizes the total weighted tardiness, the total setup and the energy consumption costs. Nowadays, there is an increasing attention on novel metaheuristics and their applications in different problems of science and engineering. A new efficient optimization method, called the League Championship Algorithm (LCA) is applied in this paper for the optimal design of electromagnetic devices. This method is inspired by the competition of sport teams in an artificial sport league for several weeks and over a number of seasons. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested against two benchmark problems: the magnetizer and the outrunner-type brushless DC motor. In this paper, the water cycle algorithm (WCA), a recently developed metaheuristic method is proposed for solving multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). The fundamental concept of the WCA is inspired by the observation of water cycle process, and movement of rivers and streams to the sea in the real world. Several benchmark functions have been used to evaluate the performance of the WCA optimizer for the MOPs. The obtained optimization results based on the considered test functions and comparisons with other well-known methods illustrate and clarify the robustness and efficiency of the WCA and its exploratory capability for solving the MOPs. The grey wolf optimizer (GWO) is a relatively novel population-based metaheuristic algorithm that has been shown to have good optimization performance. However, due to the insufficient diversity of wolves in some cases, this approach can lead to locally optimal situations. Therefore, this paper proposes a grey wolf optimization method based on a beetle antenna strategy (BGWO) that gives the leader wolf a sense of hearing to improve the global search ability and reduce unnecessary searches. In addition, to balance exploration and exploitation, a nonlinear dynamic control parameter update strategy based on the cosine function is proposed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed BGWO, this paper uses 23 standard benchmark functions to test the method in different dimensions. Moreover, four well-known engineering problems are used to evaluate the ability of the proposed algorithm to obtain real-world problem solutions. The experimental results show that BGWO has superior performance and is competitive with many state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of solution accuracy, convergence rate, and stability. Sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is a recently developed and widely used metaheuristic to perform global optimization tasks. Due to its simplicity in structure and reasonable performance, it has been utilized to solve several real-world applications. This paper proposes an alternate version of the SCA by adopting the greedy approach of search, crossover and exponentially decreased transition control parameter to overcome the issues of low exploitation, insufficient diversity and premature convergence. The proposed algorithm, called ECr-SCA, is validated and compared with the original SCA using computational time, diversity, performance index, statistical and convergence analysis on a set of 23 standard benchmark problems. Later, the proposed ECr-SCA is compared with seventeen other algorithms including improved versions of the SCA and state-of-the-art algorithms. Furthermore, the ECr-SCA is used to train multi-layer perceptron and the results are compared with variants of SCA and other metaheuristics. In the crowded environment of bio-inspired population-based metaheuristics, the Salp Swarm Optimization (SSO) algorithm recently appeared and immediately gained a lot of momentum. Inspired by the peculiar spatial arrangement of salp colonies, which are displaced in long chains following a leader, this algorithm seems to provide an interesting optimization performance. However, the original work was characterized by some conceptual and mathematical flaws, which influenced all ensuing papers on the subject. In this manuscript, we perform a critical review of SSO, highlighting all the issues present in the literature and their negative effects on the optimization process carried out by this algorithm. We also propose a mathematically correct version of SSO, named Amended Salp Swarm Optimizer (ASSO) that fixes all the discussed problems. We benchmarked the performance of ASSO on a set of tailored experiments, showing that it is able to achieve better results than the original SSO. Finally, we performed an extensive study aimed at understanding whether SSO and its variants provide advantages compared to other metaheuristics. Clustering constitutes a well-known problem of division of unlabelled dataset into disjoint groups of data elements. It can be tackled with standard statistical methods but also with metaheuristics, which offer more flexibility and decent performance. The paper studies the application of the clustering algorithm—inspired by the territorial behaviors of predatory animals—named the Predatory Animals Algorithm (or, in short: PAA). Besides the description of the PAA, the results of its experimental evaluation, with regards to the classic k-means algorithm, are provided. It is concluded that the application of newly-created nature-inspired technique brings very promising outcomes. This paper proposes a novel global optimization algorithm called Lichtenberg Algorithm (LA), inspired by the Lichtenberg figures patterns. Optimization is an essential tool to minimize or maximize functions, obtaining optimal results on costs, mass, energy, gains, among others. Actual problems may be multimodal, nonlinear, and discontinuous and may not be minimized by classical analytical methods that depend on the gradient. In this context there are metaheuristics algorithms inspired by natural phenomena to optimize real problems. There is no algorithm that is the worst or the best, but more efficient for a given type of problem. Thus, an unprecedented metaheuristic algorithm was created inspired by the physical phenomenon of radial intra-cloud lightning and Lichtenberg figures, successfully exploiting the fractal power and it is different from many in the literature as it is a hybrid algorithm composed of methods of search based on population and trajectory. Several test functions, including a design problem in a welded beam, were used to verify the robustness and to validate the Lichtenberg Algorithm. In all cases, the results were satisfactory when compared to those in the literature. This paper presents an effective stochastic algorithm that embeds a large neighborhood decomposition technique into a variable neighborhood search for solving the permutation flow-shop scheduling problem. The algorithm first constructs a permutation as a seed using a recursive application of the extended two-machine problem. In this method, the jobs are recursively decomposed into two separate groups, and, for each group, an optimal permutation is calculated based on the extended two-machine problem. Then the overall permutation, which is obtained by integrating the sub-solutions, is improved through the application of a variable neighborhood search technique. The same as the first technique, this one is also based on the decomposition paradigm and can find an optimal arrangement for a subset of jobs. In the employed large neighborhood search, the concept of the critical path has been used to help the decomposition process avoid unfruitful computation and arrange only promising contiguous parts of the permutation. In this fashion, the algorithm leaves those parts of the permutation which already have high-quality arrangements and concentrates on modifying other parts. The results of computational experiments on the benchmark instances indicate the procedure works effectively, demonstrating that solutions, in a very short distance of the best-known solutions, are calculated within seconds on a typical personal computer. The strong demand on human mobility leads to excessive numbers of cars and raises the problems of serious traffic congestion, large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and insufficient parking space in cities. Although ridesharing is a potential transport mode to solve the above problems through car-sharing, it is still not widely adopted. Most studies consider non-monetary incentive performance indices such as travel distance and successful matches in ridesharing systems. These performance indices fail to provide a strong incentive for ridesharing. The goal of this paper is to address this issue by proposing a monetary incentive performance indicator to improve the incentives for ridesharing. The objectives are to improve the incentive for ridesharing through a monetary incentive optimization problem formulation, development of a solution methodology and comparison of different solution algorithms. A non-linear integer programming optimization problem is formulated to optimize monetary incentive in ridesharing systems. Several discrete metaheuristic algorithms are developed to cope with computational complexity for solving the above problem. These include several discrete variants of particle swarm optimization algorithms, differential evolution algorithms and the firefly algorithm. Generating Boolean Functions (BFs) with high nonlinearity is a complex task that is usually addresses through algebraic constructions. Metaheuristics have also been applied extensively to this task. However, metaheuristics have not been able to attain so good results as the algebraic techniques. This paper proposes a novel diversity-aware metaheuristic that is able to excel. This proposal includes the design of a novel cost function that combines several information from the Walsh Hadamard Transform (WHT) and a replacement strategy that promotes a gradual change from exploration to exploitation as well as the formation of clusters of solutions with the aim of allowing intensification steps at each iteration. The combination of a high entropy in the population and a lower entropy inside clusters allows a proper balance between exploration and exploitation. This is the first memetic algorithm that is able to generate 10-variable BFs of similar quality than algebraic methods. Many real-life systems in production and transportation logistics are complex, large-scale, and stochastic in nature. As a consequence, simheuristic approaches – which integrate simulation inside a metaheuristic framework – are becoming increasingly popular in the optimization and simulation communities. In a simheuristic algorithm, time-consuming simulation runs are required in order to: (i) obtain accurate results on the stochastic performance of solutions generated by the metaheuristic; and (ii) provide feedback that can be useful to better guide the metaheuristic search. If the underlying system is complex, discrete-event simulation might be needed, and then the simulation component could easily overrun the computational time of the metaheuristic component. Thus, for each new solution generated by the metaheuristic, several related questions arise: (i) should the simulation component be applied to that solution? – i.e., is that solution 'promising' enough to invest additional computational time on retrieving information about its performance in a stochastic environment?; and (ii) if so, how many simulation runs are needed in order to obtain useful information (i.e., statistics with a minimum level of accuracy)? This paper discusses these issues and proposes several concepts that allow to improve the efficiency (in terms of computational time) of simheuristic algorithms. A case study, based on a typical manufacturing system, is introduced. In order to illustrate and test different speeding-up techniques, the system is optimized by using a simheuristic that integrates a genetic algorithm with discrete-event simulation. This paper introduces a bio-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm named Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA). The proposed algorithm imitates jet propulsion and swarm behaviors of tunicates during the navigation and foraging process. The performance of TSA is evaluated on seventy-four benchmark test problems employing sensitivity, convergence and scalability analysis along with ANOVA test. The efficacy of this algorithm is further compared with several well-regarded metaheuristic approaches based on the generated optimal solutions. In addition, we also executed the proposed algorithm on six constrained and one unconstrained engineering design problems to further verify its robustness. The simulation results demonstrate that TSA generates better optimal solutions in comparison to other competitive algorithms and is capable of solving real case studies having unknown search spaces.
