In this paper, an Improved Harmony Algorithm (IHA) is proposed for optimal allocations and sizing of capacitors in various distribution systems. Initially, Power Loss Index (PLI) is introduced to get the highest candidate buses for installing capacitors. Then, the proposed IHA is employed to decide the most optimal locations of capacitors and their sizing from the elected buses by PLI. The objective function is designed to reduce the total cost and losses and consequently, to increase the net saving per year. The proposed algorithm is tested on three different radial distribution systems. The obtained results via the proposed algorithm are compared with others to highlight its benefits. BAT algorithm is proposed in this paper for optimal tuning of PI controllers for load frequency controller (LFC) design. The problem of robustly tuning of PI based LFC design is formulated as an optimization problem according to time domain objective function that is solved by BAT algorithm to find the most optimistic results. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a two-area interconnected power system is considered as a tested system. To ensure robustness of the proposed control strategy to stabilize frequency oscillations, the design process takes a wide range of operating conditions and system nonlinearities into account. The simulation results are given to detect the superiority of BAT algorithm over Simulated Annealing (SA) in tuning PI controller parameters through different indices. Abstract: A novel hybrid approach involving Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) called Bacterial Swarm Optimization (BSO) is illustrated for optimal Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) design in a multimachine power system. In BSO, the search directions of tumble behavior for each bacterium are oriented by the individual’s best location and the global best location of PSO. The proposed hybrid algorithm has been extensively compared with the original BFOA algorithm and the PSO algorithm. Simulation results have shown the validity of the proposed BSO in tuning PSSs compared with BFOA and PSO. Moreover, the results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller to improve the power system stability over a wide range of loading conditions and various disturbances. Abstract: This paper proposes Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) based Static Var Compensator (SVC) for the suppression of oscillations in a multimachine power system. The proposed design problem of SVC over a wide range of loading conditions is formulated as an optimization problem. BFOA is employed to search for optimal controller parameters by minimizing the time domain objective function. The performance of the proposed technique has been evaluated with the performance of Genetic Algorithm (GA) to demonstrate the superior efficiency of the proposed BFOA in tuning SVC controller. Simultaneous tuning of the Bacteria Foraging based SVC (BFSVC) gives robust damping performance over wide range of operating conditions in compare to optimized SVC controller based on GA (GASVC). Abstract: This paper develops a novel algorithm for simultaneous coordinated designing of power system stabilizers (PSSs) and static var compensator (SVC) in a multimachine power system. The coordinated design problem of PSS and SVC over a wide range of loading conditions is formulated as an optimization problem. The Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) is employed to search for optimal controllers parameters. By minimizing the proposed objective function, in which the speed deviations between generators are involved; stability performance of the system is improved. To compare the capability of PSS and SVC, both are designed independently, and then in a coordinated manner. Simultaneous tuning of the bacterial foraging based coordinated controller gives robust damping performance over wide range of operating conditions and large disturbance in compare to optimized PSS controller based on BFOA (BFPSS) and optimized SVC controller based on BFOA (BFSVC). ELD (Economic Load Dispatch ) is the process of allocating the required load between the available generation units such that the cost of operation is minimized. The ELD problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem with both equality and inequality constraints. The dual-objective CEED (Combined Economic Emission Dispatch ) problem is considering the environmental impacts that accumulated from emission of gaseous pollutants of fossil-fueled power plants. In this paper, an implementation of FPA (Flower Pollination Algorithm ) to solve ELD and CEED problems in power systems is discussed. Results obtained by the proposed FPA are compared with other optimization algorithms for various power systems. The results introduced in this paper show that the proposed FPA outlasts other techniques even for large scale power system considering valve point effect in terms of total cost and computational time.
