The sine cosine algorithm (SCA) was proposed for solving optimization tasks, of which the way to obtain the optimal solution is mainly through the continuous iteration of the sine and cosine update formulas. However, SCA also faces low population diversity and stagnation of locally optimal solutions. Hence, we try to eliminate these problems by proposing an enhanced version of SCA, named ESCA_PSO. ESCA_PSO is proposed based on hybrid SCA and particle swarm optimization (PSO) by incorporating multiple mutation strategies into the original SCA_PSO. To validate the effect of ESCA_PSO in handling global optimization problems, ESCA_PSO was compared with quality algorithms on various types of benchmark functions. In addition, the proposed ESCA_PSO was employed to tune the best parameters of support vector machines for dealing with medical diagnosis tasks. The shuffled frog leaping algorithm is a new optimization algorithm proposed to solve the combinatorial optimization problem, which effectively combines the memetic algorithm based on a memetic algorithm and the particle swarm algorithm based on population behavior. The algorithm is widely used because it is easy to implement and requires few parameters to be adjusted. However, there are still some characteristics of this method that need to be improved because it is easy to fall into local optimization or poor search ability. To alleviate this limitation, a new version of the improved SFLA is proposed in this paper, which incorporates a dynamic step size adjustment strategy based on historical information, a specular reflection learning mechanism, and a simulated annealing mechanism based on chaotic mapping and levy flight. Firstly, the dynamic step size adjustment strategy based on historical information effectively helps to balance local exploration and global exploitation and alleviates the problem of falling into local optimum. Second, the specular reflection learning mechanism increases the possibility of searching for valid solutions in feasible domains and enhances the search ability of individuals in the population. Finally, an improved simulated annealing strategy is executed for each memetic, which improves the efficiency of local exploitation. In order to test the performance of the proposed algorithm, 31 test functions were selected from IEEE CEC2014 and 23 essential benchmark functions, and comparative experiments were carried out from the two dimensions of 30 and 100. Furthermore, a series of competing algorithms are selected, which involve nine classical standard algorithms, including PSO, BA, SSA, FA, SCA, WOA, GWO, MFO, and SFLA, as well as, six well-known improved algorithms, including LSFLA, DDSFLA, GOTLBO, ALCPSO, BLPSO, CLPSO. Furthermore, Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Friedman test are used as testing tools to illustrate the scalability of the proposed algorithm. From the analysis of the results, it can be seen that this proposed method has been effectively improved concerning stability and the quality of the optimal solution obtained from the search, both in low and high dimensions, and the ability to jump out of the local optimum has also been enhanced. In addition, to prove that this method has a reliable performance in discrete problems and continuous problems, DSSRLFLA is mapped into a discrete space, and 24 UCI data sets are also selected to evaluate the performance of the new feature selection method. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants and manufactured substances conferring toxicity to human health. The present study investigated whether pyrene, a type of PAH, harms rats. Our research provides an effective feature selection strategy for the animal dataset from Wenzhou Medical University's Experimental Animal Center to thoroughly examine the impacts of PAH toxicity on rat features. Initially, we devised a high‐performance optimization method (SCBA) and added the Sobol sequence, vertical crossover and horizontal crossover mechanisms to the bat algorithm (BA). The SCBA‐KELM model, which combines SCBA with the kernel extreme learning machine model (KELM), has excellent accuracy and high stability for selecting features. Benchmark function tests are then used in this research to verify the overall optimization performance of SCBA. In this paper, the feature selection performance of SCBA‐KELM is verified using various comparative experiments. According to the results, the features of the genes PXR, CAR, CYP2B1/2 and CYP1A1/2 have the most impact on rats. The SCBA‐KELM model's classification performance for the gene dataset was 100%, and the model's precision value for the public dataset was around 96%, as determined by the classification index. The prognosis of paraquat (PQ) poisoning is highly correlated to plasma PQ concentration, which has been identified as the most important index in PQ poisoning. This study investigated the predictive value of coagulation, liver, and kidney indices in prognosticating PQ-poisoning patients, when aligned with plasma PQ concentrations. Coagulation, liver, and kidney indices were first analyzed by variance analysis, receiver operating characteristic curves, and Fisher discriminant analysis. Then, a new, intelligent, machine learning-based system was established to effectively provide prognostic analysis of PQ-poisoning patients based on a combination of the aforementioned indices. In the proposed system, an enhanced extreme learning machine wrapped with a grey wolf-optimization strategy was developed to predict the risk status from a pool of 103 patients (56 males and 47 females); of these, 52 subjects were deceased and 51 alive. The proposed method was rigorously evaluated against this real-life dataset, in terms of accuracy, Matthews correlation coefficients, sensitivity, and specificity. Additionally, the feature selection was investigated to identify correlating factors for risk status. The results demonstrated that there were significant differences in the coagulation, liver, and kidney indices between deceased and surviving subjects (p<0.05). Aspartate aminotransferase, prothrombin time, prothrombin activity, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, urea nitrogen, and creatinine were the most highly correlated indices in PQ poisoning and showed statistical significance (p<0.05) in predicting PQ-poisoning prognoses. According to the feature selection, the most important correlated indices were found to be associated with aspartate aminotransferase, the aspartate aminotransferase to alanine ratio, creatinine, prothrombin time, and prothrombin activity. The method proposed here showed excellent results that were better than that produced based on blood-PQ concentration alone. Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA) has recently received much attention from researchers because of its simple structure, excellent optimisation capabilities, and acceptable convergence in dealing with various types of complex real-world problems. this study aims to retrieve, identify, summarise and analyse critical studies related to SMA development. Based on this, 98 SMA-related studies in the Web of Science were retrieved, selected, and identified. The two main review vectors were advanced versions of SMAs and application domains. First, we counted and analysed various advanced versions of SMAs, summarised, classified, and discussed their improvement methods and directions. Secondly, we sort out the application domains of SMA and analyse the role, development status, and shortcomings of SMA in each domain. A survey based on the existing literature shows that SMAs clearly outperform some established metaheuristics in terms of speed and accuracy in handling various benchmark problems and solving multiple realistic optimization problems. This review not only suggests possible future directions in the field but, due to the inclusion of graphical and tabular comparisons of various properties, also provides future researchers with a comprehensive source of information about SMA and advanced versions of SAMs and the scope of adaptation for multiple application domains. • BFGSOLMFO is proposed for global optimization and real-world problems. • OL is used to enhance exploitation and exploration ability of MFO. • BFGS is employed to further excavate the potential global best solution. As a typical emergent swarm intelligence algorithm, Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) has been created to deal with global optimization problems. Since the introduction, it has been applied to various optimization problems. However, MFO may have the trouble of getting into the local best, and the convergence rate cannot be satisfying when handling the high-dimensional and some multimodal problems. In this work, an enhanced MFO integrated with orthogonal learning (OL) and Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS), which we called BFGSOLMFO, is proposed to alleviate the stagnation shortcomings and accelerate the performance of well-regarded MFO. In the BFGSOLMFO, OL is used to construct a better candidate solution for each moth and then guide the whole population to a reasonable potential area. Meanwhile, in each iteration, after the evolution of population finished and the global optima are obtainable, BFGS is employed to further excavate the potential of the global best moth in the current population. With the aim of evaluating the efficacy of the BFGSOLMFO, first of all, the IEEE CEC2014 benchmark set is utilized to measure the performance in solving function optimizations with high-dimensional and multimodal characteristics. Both sets of the IEEE CEC2011 real-world benchmark problems and the three constrained engineering optimization problems are adopted to estimate the performance of BFGSOLMFO in tackling practical scenarios. In all the experiments, the developed BFGSOLMFO is compared with state-of-the-art advanced algorithms. This makes the original SCA appear to have insufficient optimization capability and likely to fall into premature convergence. A multi-mechanism acting variant of SCA, called ARSCA, is proposed to address the above deficiencies. ARSCA is an enhanced SCA algorithm based on the adaptive quadratic interpolation mechanism (AQIM) and Rounding mechanism (RM). RM enables a more balanced state between exploration and exploitation of the ARSCA. AQIM enhances local exploitation capabilities. To verify the performance of ARSCA, we compared ARSCA with some advanced traditional optimization algorithms and variants of algorithms for 30 consecutive benchmark functions of IEEE CEC2014. In addition, ARSCA was applied to 6 constrained engineering optimization problems. These six algorithms include the tension–compression spring design problem, the welded beam design problem, the pressure vessel design problem, the I-beam design problem, the speed reducer design problem, and the three-bar design problem. Experimental results show that ARSCA outperforms its competitors in both the solution quality and the ability to jump out of the local optimum. The slime mould algorithm (SMA) is a logical swarm-based stochastic optimizer that is easy to understand and has a strong optimization capability. However, the SMA is not suitable for solving multimodal and hybrid functions. Therefore, in the present study, to enhance the SMA and maintain population diversity, a dispersed foraging SMA (DFSMA) with a dispersed foraging strategy is proposed. We conducted extensive experiments based on several functions in IEEE CEC2017. The DFSMA were compared with 11 other meta-heuristic algorithms (MAs), 10 advanced algorithms, and 3 recently proposed algorithms. Moreover, to conduct more systematic data analyses, the experimental results were further evaluated using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The DFSMA was shown to outperform other optimizers in terms of convergence speed and accuracy. In addition, the binary DFSMA (BDFSMA) was obtained using the transform function. The performance of the BDFSMA was evaluated on 12 datasets in the UCI repository. The experimental results reveal that the BDFSMA performs better than the original SMA, and that, compared with other optimization algorithms, it improves classification accuracy and reduces the number of selected features, demonstrating its practical engineering value in spatial search and feature selection. • An improved slime mould algorithm (DFSMA) is proposed for feature selection. • The performance of DFSMA is verified by comparing with several famous algorithms. • DFSMA has faster convergence speed and accuracy compared with others. • DFSMA has achieved higher classification accuracy and smaller number of features.
