Oscillometric blood pressure (BP) measurement devices are widely utilized as the primary automated BP measurement tools in non-specialist environments. However, their accuracy and reliability vary under different settings and for different age groups and health conditions. An essential constraint of current oscillometric BP measurement devices is their analysis algorithms' incapacity to capture the BP information encoded in the pattern of recorded oscillometric pulses to its fullest extent. In this article, we propose a new 2D oscillometric data representation that enables a full characterization of arterial system and empowers the application of deep learning to extract the most informative features correlated with BP. A hybrid convolutional-recurrent neural network was developed to capture the oscillometric pulses morphological information as well as their temporal evolution over the cuff deflation period from the 2D structure, and estimate BP. The performance of the proposed method was verified on three oscillometric databases collected from the wrist and upper arms of 245 individuals. It was found that it achieves a mean error and a standard deviation of error of as low as 0.08 mmHg and 2.4 mmHg in the estimation of systolic BP, and 0.04 mmHg and 2.2 mmHg in the estimation of diastolic BP, respectively. Our proposed method outperformed the state-of-the-art techniques and satisfied the current international standards for BP monitors by a wide margin. The proposed method shows promise toward robust and objective BP estimation in a variety of patients and monitoring situations.

A variety of oscillometric algorithms have been recently proposed in the literature for estimation of blood pressure (BP). However, these algorithms possess specific strengths and weaknesses that should be taken into account before selecting the most appropriate one. In this paper, we propose a fusion method to exploit the advantages of the oscillometric algorithms and circumvent their limitations. The proposed fusion method is based on the computation of the weighted arithmetic mean of the oscillometric algorithms estimates, and the weights are obtained using a Bayesian approach by minimizing the mean square error. The proposed approach is used to fuse four different oscillometric blood pressure estimation algorithms. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on a pilot dataset of 150 oscillometric recordings from 10 subjects. It is found that the mean error and standard deviation of error are reduced relative to the individual estimation algorithms by up to 7 mmHg and 3 mmHg in estimation of systolic pressure, respectively, and by up to 2 mmHg and 3 mmHg in estimation of diastolic pressure, respectively., (Copyright © 2016 IPEM. Radar-based noncontact sensing of life sign signals is often used in safety and rescue missions during disasters such as earthquakes and avalanches and for home care applications. The radar returns obtained from a human target contain the breathing frequency along with its strong higher harmonics depending on the target’s posture. As a consequence, well understood, computationally efficient, and the most popular traditional FFT-based estimators that rely only on the strongest peak for estimates of breathing rates may be inaccurate. The paper proposes a solution for correcting the estimation errors of such single peak-based algorithms. The proposed method is based on using harmonically related comb filters over a set of all possible breathing frequencies. The method is tested on three subjects for different postures, for different distances between the radar and the subject, and for two different radar platforms: PN-UWB and phase modulated-CW (PM-CW) radars. Simplified algorithms more suitable for real-time implementation have also been proposed and compared using accuracy and computational complexity. The proposed breathing rate estimation algorithms provide a reduction of about 81% and 80% in the mean absolute error of breathing rates in comparison to the traditional FFT-based methods using strongest peak detection, for PN-UWB and PM-CW radars, respectively. Oscillometry is a popular technique for automatic estimation of blood pressure (BP). However, most of the oscillometric algorithms rely on empirical coefficients for systolic and diastolic pressure evaluation that may differ in various patient populations, rendering the technique unreliable. A promising complementary technique for automatic estimation of BP, based on the dependence of pulse transit time (PTT) on cuff pressure (CP) (PTT–CP mapping), has been proposed in the literature. However, a theoretical grounding for this technique and a nonparametric BP estimation approach are still missing. In this paper, we propose a novel coefficient-free BP estimation method based on PTT–CP dependence. PTT is mathematically modeled as a function of arterial lumen area under the cuff. It is then analytically shown that PTT–CP mappings computed from various points on the arterial pulses can be used to directly estimate systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure without empirical coefficients. Analytical results are cross-validated with a pilot investigation on ten healthy subjects where 150 simultaneous electrocardiogram and oscillometric BP recordings are analyzed. The results are encouraging whereby the mean absolute errors of the proposed method in estimating systolic and diastolic pressures are 5.31 and 4.51 mmHg, respectively, relative to the Food and Drug Administration approved Omron monitor. In this paper, we present a novel feature-based neural network (NN) approach for estimation of blood pressure (BP) from wrist oscillometric measurements. Unlike previous methods that use the raw oscillometric waveform envelope (OMWE) as input to the NN, in this paper, we propose to use features extracted from the envelope. The OMWE is mathematically modeled as a sum of two Gaussian functions. The optimum parameters of this model are found by minimizing the least squares error between the model and the OMWE using the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm and are used as features. Two separate feed-forward NNs (FFNNs) are then designed to estimate the systolic and diastolic BPs using these features. The FFNNs are trained using the resilient backpropagation learning algorithm and tested on a data set of BP measurements recorded from 85 subjects. The performance is then compared with that of the conventional maximum amplitude algorithm, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, and already published NN-based methods. It is found that the proposed approach achieves lower values of mean absolute error and standard deviation of error in the estimation of BP. In addition, the proposed approach has the following advantages: lower complexity with respect to the design parameters, smaller training data set, and lower computational load. Optimizing the antecedent part of neurofuzzy system is an active research topic, for which different approaches have been developed. However, current approaches typically suffer from high computational complexity or lack of ability to extract knowledge from a given set of training data. In this paper, we introduce a novel incremental training algorithm for the class of neurofuzzy systems that are structured based on local linear classifiers. Linear discriminant analysis is utilized to transform the data into a space in which linear discriminancy of training samples is maximized. The neurofuzzy classifier is then built in the transformed space, starting from the simplest form (a global linear classifier). If the overall performance of the classifier was not satisfactory, it would be iteratively refined by incorporating additional local classifiers. In addition, rule consequent parameters are optimized using a local least square approach. Our refinement strategy is motivated by LOLIMOT, which is a greedy partition algorithm for structure training and has been successfully applied in a number of identification problems. The proposed classifier is compared to several benchmark classifiers on a number of well-known datasets.
