The optimal allocation of protective devices is a serious issue in an electrical power system; in order to reduce the possibility of faults, the protection devices should be optimally placed. The paper presents a continuous genetic algorithm (CGA) for the optimal allocation of directional relays for the efficient energy minimization in a radial distribution system (DG). The algorithm is flexible to use for the changes and improvements in the optimal location for a DG unit and can optimize the energy consumption in the radial distribution system. The proposed algorithm has been implemented on IEEE 33 and 69-bus system using MATLAB (R2014b, MathWorks). Low energy consumption is a common design objective in an energy-constrained distribution system. To ensure a safe and trustworthy pattern in contradiction to the possible faults, a precise, reliable, and fast relaying strategy is of high importance in an electrical power system. These challenges give the impression of being more refined in multi-loop distribution systems. More recently, overcurrent relays (OCRs) have evolved as proficient counteragents for such cases. In this way, inaugurating an optimal protection coordination strategy is accepted as the primary precondition in guaranteeing the safe protection of the coordination strategy. This study is aimed at lessening the overall operational time of the main relays in order to reduce the power outages. The coordination problem is conducted by adjusting only one parameter, namely the time multiplier setting (TMS). In electrical power relaying coordination, the objective function to be minimized is the sum of the overall operational time of the main relays. In the prescribed work, the coordination of the OCRs in the single- and multi-loop distribution network is realized as an optimization issue. The optimization is accomplished by means of JAYA algorithm. The suggested technique depends on the idea that the result acquired for a certain issue ought to pass near the finest result and avert the worst result. This technique involves only the common control factors and does not involve specific control factors. JAYA is adopted to OCR problem and run 20 times with the same initial condition for each case study, and it has been realized that for every run, the JAYA algorithm converges to the global optimum values requiring less number of iterations and computational time. The results obtained from JAYA algorithm are compared with other evolutionary and up-to-date algorithms, and it was determined that JAYA outperforms the other techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In electrical engineering problems, bio- and nature-inspired optimization techniques are valuable ways to minimize or maximize an objective function. We use the root tree algorithm (RTO), inspired by the random movement of roots, to search for the global optimum, in order to best solve the problem of overcurrent relays (OCRs). It is a complex and highly linear constrained optimization problem. In this problem, we have one type of design variable, time multiplier settings (TMSs), for each relay in the circuit. The objective function is to minimize the total operating time of all the primary relays to avoid excessive interruptions. In this paper, three case studies have been considered. This article proposes an adaptive operating scheme for a recloser based on classified detection of transient faults and permanent faults in a distribution system. Wavelet transform is used to classify whether a fault is transient or permanent in nature. The Haar mother wavelet of the current flowing in a neutral line has more rich harmonics than other mother wavelets, such as Daubechies, Symlets, Coiflets, and Biorthogonal, so the total harmonic distortion of the Haar mother wavelet is applied for estimating the instant of fault clearance and giving a signal for operating action to the recloser (reclosing). The various simulations according to the fault clearance time and fault type are performed using the Electromagnetic Transient Program to verify the proposed algorithm. The relay optimization expresses quite a challenge for smooth and optimal operation of power system networks. The relay optimization is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear problem and is highly constrained. Furthermore, a reliable relaying system must be able to detect and isolate the faulted portion in a timely manner. Therefore, it is necessary to find optimal parameters for relay settings to be able to respond in a timely way to the encountered fault and at the same time keep in consideration the operational and coordination constraints. This paper proposes modified Harris hawk optimization (MHHO), which is based on the intelligent preying tactics of Harris hawks and the improvement of intended modifications, crowding distance and roulette wheel selection. The proposed algorithm has been tested on IEEE 8 and 15-bus systems, using MATLAB programming. The test systems are the distribution networks covering the medium level voltage for consideration. The simulation results verified the success of MHHO to find optimal settings for the relays. For IEEE 8-bus system, MHHO was able to give 35.45% improvement in the results in comparison to other algorithms. Furthermore, for the IEEE 15-bus system, MHHO showed 24.09% improvement on average. The comparison of the results obtained by MHHO with the other state-of-the-art algorithms proved that it is the strong candidate for optimization of the relay coordination problem.
