Abstract

The isotopic distribution of nuclei produced in the 50Ti + 249Cf reaction has been studied at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI Darmstadt, which separates ions according to differences in magnetic rigidity. The bombardment was performed at an energy around the Bass barrier and with the TASCA magnetic fields set for collecting fusion-evaporation reaction products. Fifty-three isotopes located “north-east” of 208Pb were identified as recoiling products formed in non-fusion channels of the reaction. These recoils were implanted with energies in two distinct ranges; besides one with higher energy, a significant low-energy contribution was identified. The latter observation was not expected to occur according to kinematics of the known types of reactions, namely quasi-elastic, multi-nucleon transfer, deep-inelastic collisions or quasifission. The present observations are discussed within the framework of two-body kinematics passing through the formation of a composite system.

Abstract

Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca + 243Am were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. Amongst the detected thirty correlated α-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-α-fission and five recoil-α-α-fission events were observed. The latter five chains are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator, and three such events reported from an experiment at the Berkeley gas-filled separator. The four chains observed at the Dubna gas-filled separator were assigned to start from the 2n-evaporation channel 289115 due to the fact that these recoil-α-α-fission events were observed only at low excitation energies. Contrary to this interpretation, we suggest that some of these recoil-α-α-fission decay chains, as well as some of the recoil-α-α-fission and recoil-α-fission decay chains reported from Berkeley and in this article, start from the 3n-evaporation channel 288115.

Abstract

We have performed an experiment to synthesize the element 117 (Ts) with the $^{48}$Ca+$^{249}$Bk fusion reaction. Four $\alpha$-decay chains attributed to the element 117 were observed. Two of them were long decay chains which can be assigned to the one originating from the $\alpha$ decay of $^{294}$Ts. The other two were short decay chains which are consistent with the one originating from the $\alpha$ decay of $^{293}$Ts. We have compared the present results with the literature data, and found that our present results mostly confirmed the literature data, leading to the firm confirmation of the synthesis of the element 117., $^{48}$Ca+$^{249}$B融合反応を用いて117番元素(Ts)合成実験を行い、117番元素に起因すると思われる4つの$\alpha$崩壊連鎖を観測した。うち2つは長い崩壊連鎖で、$^{294}$Tsの$\alpha$崩壊に起因するものと同定された。他の2つは短い崩壊連鎖で、$^{293}$Tsの$\alpha$崩壊に起因すると考えると矛盾しない。今回の結果と過去の文献値を比較したところ、今回の我々の結果は過去の文献値をほぼ再現し、117番元素合成の事実を強く再確認する結果となった。

Abstract

Short-lived α-decaying nuclei "northeast" of 208Pb in the chart of nuclides were studied using the reaction 48Ca+243Am with the decay station TASISpec at TASCA, GSI Darmstadt. Decay energies and times from pile-up events were extracted with a tailor-made pulse-shape analysis routine and specific α-decay chains were identified in a correlation analysis. Decay chains starting with the even-even 220Ra and its odd-A neighbors, 219Fr, and 219,221Ra, with a focus on the 219Ra→215Rn decay, were studied by means of α-γ spectroscopy. A revised α-decay scheme of 219Ra is proposed, including a new decay branch from a previously not considered isomeric state at 17 keV excitation energy. Conclusions on nuclear structure are drawn from the experimental data, aided by Geant4 simulations and a discussion on theoretical calculations.

Abstract

The new neutron-deficient nuclei 240Es and 236Bk were synthesised at the gas-filled recoil separator RITU. They were identified by their radioactive decay chains starting from 240Es produced in the fusion–evaporation reaction 209Bi(34S,3n)240Es. Half-lives of View the MathML source6(2)s and View the MathML source22−6+13s were obtained for 240Es and 236Bk, respectively. Two groups of α particles with energies View the MathML sourceEα=8.19(3)MeV and View the MathML source8.09(3)MeV were unambiguously assigned to 240Es. Electron-capture delayed fission branches with probabilities of 0.16(6)0.16(6) and 0.04(2)0.04(2) were measured for 240Es and 236Bk, respectively. Abstract

Abstract

In deep inelastic multinucleon transfer reactions of 48 Ca + 248 Cm we observed about 100 residual nuclei with proton numbers between Z=82 and Z=100 . Among them, there are five new neutron-deficient isotopes: 216 U, 219 Np, 223 Am, 229 Am and 233 Bk. As separator for the transfer products we used the velocity filter SHIP of GSI while the isotope identification was performed via the α decay chains of the nuclei. These first results reveal that multinucleon transfer reactions together with here applied fast and sensitive separation and detection techniques are promising for the synthesis of new isotopes in the region of heaviest nuclei.

The isotope Sg and its decay product Rf were produced in the nuclear reaction Pb(Cr, n)Sg . The radioactive decay of these isotopes was investigated by means of $ \alpha$ , $ \alpha$ - $ \gamma$ and/or $ \alpha$ -X-ray spectroscopy. Abstract

The isotope 261Bh was produced in the reaction 209Bi(54Cr, 2n)261Bh and its $ \alpha$ decay has been remeasured. It was found that it populates by an unhindered transition of $ \approx$ 10 MeV an excited level at E * > 350 keV in the daughter nucleus 257Db . The latter decays by internal transitions either into the isomeric state or the ground state. A somewhat improved half-life value of T1/2 = 11.8+3.9 -2.4 ms was obtained for 261Bh . The data support the previous assignment of the $ \alpha$ activities 257Db (1) and 257Db (2) to the isomer and to the ground state, respectively. No evidence for an isomeric state in 261Bh decaying by $ \alpha$ emission was found. Based on the experimental results and theoretical calculations a partial decay scheme of 261Bh including spin and parity assignments of the ground-state and excited levels in the daughter nucleus 257Db populated by the $ \alpha$ decay and succeeding internal transitions have been suggested. 261Bh were observed, resulting in an SF branching b261Bh were observed, resulting in an SF branching bSF < 0.05 . The decay of the isotopes 255Rf, 251No and 247Fm produced in the reactions $\mathrm{{}^{207}Pb\ensuremath({}^{50}Ti,2n){}^{255}Rf\ {}^{\alpha}_{\rightarrow}\ {}^{251}No\ \ensuremath{}^{\alpha}_{\rightarrow}\ {}^{247}Fm}$ , and $\mathrm{{}^{206}Pb\ensuremath({}^{48}Ca,3n){}^{251}No\ \ensuremath{}^{\alpha}_{\rightarrow}\ {}^{247}Fm}$ was investigated by means of α-γ spectroscopy. In 251No a new isomeric state at E * > 1700keV with a half-life of ≈ 2μs was identified. The decay of 247Fm was measured more precisely. The decay of 255No was investigated by means of α-γ spectroscopy. The isotope was produced in the reactions 208Pb(48Ca, n)255No, $\mathrm{{}^{209}Bi({}^{48}Ca,2n){}^{255}Lr \ {}^{\ensuremath \mathit{EC}}_{\rightarrow}\ {}^{255}No}$ , and $238U(22Ne, 5n)255No$. Levels of the daughter nucleus 251Fm were assigned by α-γ coincidence measurements and on the basis of systematics. Level energies were determined precisely using measured γ-rays. Abstract

Detailed fine-structure a-decay studies of 188,190Bi were performed using the complete-fusion reactions of 50,52Cr ions with a 142Nd target at the velocity filter SHIP. The evaporation residues were separated in-flight and subsequently identified on the basis of recoil-a, recoil-α&gamma/X-ray and excitation function measurements. Improved data on the αdecay of 188,90Bi were obtained and a number of new low-lying excited states in the daughters 184,186T1 were observed. An intruder, presumably 10 state was identified in 184T1, extending the systematics of such states in the odd-odd Tl nuclei beyond the neutron mid-shell at N =104. Abstract

Alpha-decay of the new nuclide 184Bi has been studied in the complete-fusion reaction 93Nb(94Mo, 3n)184Bi at the velocity filter SHIP. The evaporation residues were separated in-flight and subsequently identified on the basis of recoil-α-recoil-α-γ analysis and excitation functions measurements. Two α-decaying isomeric states in 184Bi with half-life values of 13(2) ms and 6.6(1.5) ms were identified. The a-branching ratio of 180T1 was deduced for the first time as (2-12)%. Improved data on the fine-structure a-decay of 186Bi were obtained in the 93Nb(95Mo, 2n)186Bi reaction. In deep inelastic multinucleon transfer reactions of 48 Ca + 248 Cm we observed about 100 residual nuclei with proton numbers between Z = 82 and Z = 100 . Abstract

Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca + 243Am were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. Amongst the detected thirty correlated α-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-α-fission and five recoil-α-α-fission events were observed. The latter five chains are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator, and three such events reported from an experiment at the Berkeley gas-filled separator. The four chains observed at the Dubna gas-filled separator were assigned to start from the 2n-evaporation channel 289115 due to the fact that these recoil-α-α-fission events were observed only at low excitation energies. Contrary to this interpretation, we suggest that some of these recoil-α-α-fission decay chains, as well as some of the recoil-α-α-fission and recoil-α-fission decay chains reported from Berkeley and in this article, start from the 3n-evaporation channel 288115.

Abstract

The electron-capture decay followed by a prompt fission process was searched for in the hitherto unknown most neutron-deficient Md isotope with mass number 244. Alpha decay with α-particle energies of 8.73-8.86 MeV and with a half-life of 0.30+0.19-0.09  s was assigned to 244Md. No fission event with a similar half-life potentially originating from spontaneous fissioning of the short-lived electron-capture decay daughter 244Fm was observed, which results in an upper limit of 0.14 for the electron-capture branching of 244Md. Two groups of fission events with half-lives of 0.9+0.6-0.3  ms and 5+3-2  ms were observed. The 0.9+0.6-0.3  ms activity was assigned to originate from the decay of 245Md. The origin of eight fission events resulting in a half-life of 5+3-2 ms could not be unambiguously identified within the present data while the possible explanation has to invoke previously unseen physics cases. Abstract

Produced in the reaction 48Ca+243Am, thirty correlated α-decay chains were observed in an experiment conducted at the GSI Helmholzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. The decay chains are basically consistent with previous findings and are considered to originate from isotopes of element 115 with mass numbers 287, 288, and 289. A set-up aiming specifically for high-resolution charged particle and photon coincidence spectroscopy was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. For the first time, γ rays as well as X-ray candidates were observed in prompt coincidence with the α-decay chains of element 115.

Abstract

A high-resolution , X-ray and gamma-ray coincidence spectroscopy experiment was conducted at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. Thirty correlated alpha-decay chains were detected following the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca + 243Am. The observations are consistent with previous assignments of similar decay chains to originate from element Z = 115. For the first time, precise spectroscopy allows the derivation of excitation schemes of isotopes along the decay chains starting with elements Z > 112. Comprehensive Monte-Carlo simulations accompany the data analysis. Nuclear structure models provide a first level interpretation.
