Abstract

The article presents a study of the prognostic value of N-Terminal pro-B-Type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Patients with symptoms suggestive of an ACS constitute a large and heterogeneous population. BNP is a 32 amino acid peptide that is released predominantly from ventricular myocardium in response to increased ventricular wall stress and is a potent predictor of mortality risk in patients with ACS. BNP assessment may improve the ability to quantify the consequences of acute myocardial ischemia. This study evaluated the prognostic value of a single measurement of N-terminal pro brain BNP in patients with ACS and no ST segment elevation.
