The biodegradability of two typical parabens (methylparaben and propylparaben) in activated sludge, at initial concentrations of 1 mg L −1 or 10 mg L −1 , was investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The results showed that microorganisms played a key role in degradation of parabens in WWTPs, especially in aerobic systems. The half-lives of methylparaben and propylparaben under aerobic conditions have been estimated to range between 15.8 and 19.8 min, and benzoic acid was found to be one of the major biodegradation products. The calculated biodegradation efficiency of methylparaben and propylparaben in activated sludge under aerobic conditions was significantly higher than that observed under anaerobic (nitrate, sulfate, and Fe (III) reducing) conditions, as methylparaben and propylparaben exhibited comparatively higher persistence in anaerobic systems, with half-lives ≥43.3 h and ≥8.6 h, respectively. Overall, the results of this study imply that the majority of these parabens can be eliminated by aerobic biodegradation during conventional wastewater treatment processes, whereas minor removal is possible in anaerobic systems if an insufficient hydraulic retention time was maintained. Lab scale and single stage high solid anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge spiked with freshly synthesized nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) and commercial iron powder (IP) under mesophilic condition (37 ± 1 °C) was performed. The effects of both additives on methane yield, and pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP) removal were investigated. Results showed that methane yield was increased by 25.2% and 40.8% in the presence of nZVI (0.1%) and IP (1.6%), respectively. Removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand were 54.4% and 66.2% in the presence of nZVI and IP, respectively, which were higher compared to the control group (44.6%). In addition, most PPCPs could be partly or completely removed during the anaerobic digestion process. The application of nZVI and IP showed positive impact on the removal of chlorinated PPCPs ( p < 0.05), but did not show significant impact on other PPCPs ( p > 0.05). Our finding suggests that the application of nZVI and IP in anaerobic digestion could be a promising way to enhance methane yield but had less improvement on PPCP degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the most widely used processes to stabilize waste sewage sludge and produce biogas renewable energy. In this study, two different iron nanoparticles [nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 )] were used in the mesophilic AD processes (37 ± 1 °C) to improve biogas production. In addition, changes of heavy metal (Cd, Co, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr) speciation during AD of sludge with and without iron nanoparticles have been investigated. Concentrations of metals in the initial sludge were as follows: 63.1, 73.4, 1102.2, 2060.3, 483.9 and 604.1 mg kg −1 (dry sludge basis) for Cd, Co, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr, respectively. Sequential fractionation showed that metals were predominantly bonded to organic matter and carbonates in the initial sludge. Compared with AD without iron nanoparticles, the application of iron nanoparticles (at dose of 0.5% in this study) showed positive impact not only on biogas production, but also on improvement of metals stabilization in the digestate. Metals were found concentrated in Fe–Mn bound and residual fractions and little was accumulated in the liquid digestate and most mobile fractions of solid digestate (water soluble, exchangeable and carbonates bound). Therefore, iron nanoparticles when properly used, could improve not only biogas yield, but also regulate and control the mobilization of metals during AD process. However, our study also observed that iron nanoparticles could promote the immobilization of phosphorus within the sludge during AD, and more research is needed to fully address the mechanism behind this phenomenon and the impact on future phosphorus reuse. This study proposed a novel and high-efficiency strategy, i.e., freezing followed by low-temperature thermal treatment, to significantly promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from waste activated sludge compared to traditional freezing/thawing treatment. The maximal production of SCFAs was 212 mg COD/g VSS with a shortened retention time of five days, and the potentially recovered carbon source, including SCFAs, soluble polysaccharides and proteins, reached 321 mg COD/g VSS, increased by 92.1 and 28.3% compared to sole freezing and thermal treatment. Both the solubilization and hydrolysis steps of WAS were accelerated, and the acid-producing microorganisms, such as Macellibacteroides , Romboutsia and Paraclostridium , were greatly enriched, with a total abundance of 13.9%, which was only 0.54% in control. Interestingly, the methane production was inhibited at a shortened retention time, resulting in SCFAs accumulation, whereas it was increased by 32.0% at a longer sludge retention time, providing a potential solution for energy recovery from WAS. In this study, the occurrence and fate of 49 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were investigated in an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for seven consecutive days using 24-h composite sampling technique. Special emphasis was placed to understand the distribution of PPCPs in dissolved and adsorbed phase, and to evaluate PPCP fate in different treatment units. Among the 49 PPCPs, 40 PPCPs in influent, 36 in effluent, 29 in sludge and 23 in suspended solids were detected at least once during sampling. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and a stimulant were predominant PPCPs in influent whereas antibiotics were predominant in sludge, effluent and suspended solids. Removal efficiencies from the aqueous phase based on the dissolved PPCPs showed variable contribution in removing different PPCPs under screen and grit chamber, anaerobic treatment, anoxic treatment, oxic treatment and sedimentation-UV treatments, with the highest removal percentage by anaerobic process in terms of both individual and overall treatment. Mass load analysis showed that 352 g PPCPs enter the WWTP daily while 14.5 g and 58.1 g were discharged through effluent and excess sludge to the receiving sea water and soil applications, respectively. Mass balance analysis based on both aqueous and suspended PPCPs showed 280 g (79.4%) mass of influent PPCPs was lost along the wastewater treatment processes, mainly due to degradation/transformation.
