In this paper, we introduce the concept of genetic networks to study the relationships between manuscripts and publications in genetic editing. We present a data model and its formalisation in an OWL2 ontology, as well as the corresponding data visualisations in the form of sky maps. Our case study is the literary œuvre of the Swiss writer and photographer Gustave Roud (1897-1976). We conclude with some remarks about the project workflow and the integration of data and visual modelling. &nbsp

This presentation explores how n-grams can be used to automatically classify and learn about music. An overall discussion is provided of various ways in which n-grams can be adapted for use with digital scores, and of how musically meaningful features can be extracted from them. The jSymbolic 3.0 alpha prototype feature extractor is then used in three sets of music classification experiments investigating how n-gram features perform relative to and combined with other types of features extracted from symbolic music files., Funded by the FRQSC and SSHRC.

As the primary resource for preschool children, picture books,and their gender narratives, can unconsciously shape and changechildren’s perceptions of sex roles and gender identity (Bleakley etal., 1988; Connor & Serbin, 1978; Latima, 2020). However, existingstudies show concerning trends in the representation of genderinequality in modern picture books, such as the overwhelmingnumber of male main characters and traditional gender stereotypesof vocations, personalities and habits (Casey et al., 2021; Hamiltonet al., 2006; Lee & Chin, 2019; Terras, 2018). It is thereforeimportant for children’s picture books to have diverse gender descriptionsand improved equal gender representations.Since the second Feminist Movement in the 1960s, gender equalityin UK children’s picture books have been continuously examinedyet slowly improved (Adams et al., 2011; Allen et al., 1993;Capuzza, 2020; Hamilton et al., 2006). Similar studies have beenfar less common in China, as the Chinese picture book market onlydeveloped from the start of the 21 st Century (Xiao, 2021). Onestudy has shown the existence of the traditional gender biases inChinese picture books (Liu & Chen, 2018). Based on the researchgap between these two countries, this study will (1) investigategender representations and narratives in picture books, (2) comparethe similarities and differences between bestselling Britishand Chinese picture books texts from 2010 to 2020. We do so byapplying text mining techniques to analyse gender narratives withinpicture book texts themselves. This follows on from our 2022study where we analysed publisher’s descriptions of texts, ratherthan full text mining of the book’s content (Li et al., 2022).

The multilingual DraCor platform (https://www.dracor.org) represents a valuable resource for literature and theatre scholars, allowing them to host, access and analyse thousands of plays from Antiquity to the XX century. After briefly presenting the workflow for the ingestion of new plays into our ecosystem, we focus on the collaborative side of our endeavours, demonstrating how external scholars can benefit from a range of tools and guides to easily prepare and submit their own collections. As a showcase of the process, we present three corpora currently in production, focusing respectively on Ukrainian, Czech, and Early Modern English literature.

The Skills Gap Analysis, a recent survey among scholars describes the current distribution of (self-attested) practical text-processing skills and scholars' despair from the necessary skillset, as well as a perceived absence of "an entry point in(to) CLS education". We argue that corpus analysis is the entry point and why.

We present a Web application that facilitates the deep visual search of image collections using contemporary machine learning. The Digital Linguistic Atlas of Scotland is a digitization and reanalysis of the lexical section of the Linguistic Atlas of Scotland. The tool offers dynamic and costumizeable maps and aims to showcase the opportunities of the digitization of analogue linguistic research data.

We are presenting the results of mutual collaboration within two different, but related, projects in the field of cultural heritage digitization. Shared outcomes of our mutual collaboration include the valorization of cultural heritage items and experimental work on enriching a visualization application with a functionality to annotate graphs.

The imagined urban landscapes, structures, and environments of writer H.P. Lovecraft's Providence, RI play a central role in the development of his tales of horror, abomination, and wonder. We present a study of musical arrangements oif concert music for domestic performance through the lens of an English monthly music journal (The Harmonicon). The study is supported by digital annotation tooling built on IIIF, MEI and Linked Data.

This project explores computational uses of pose analysis to investigate questions of directorial style and actorly interpretation in theatrical performances. The process involves developing methods to help performing arts scholars and professionals use pose-data models to capture movement from performances, as well as record, analyze, recreate and remix those movements.

This panel will explore the various aspects of what is involved, not only in conceiving and building a 3D infrastructure, but in creating 3D Scholarly editions and developing the viewers that allow stories to be created around them. It will also explore issues around training the community of the infrastructure.

This paper aims to elucidate the origin and metadata of land surveying maps, which meticulously document the landforms and features of various regions across mainland China between 1895 and 1944. Additionally, the digitization process of this research will be outlined. Furthermore, this paper will introduce the user interface of CHMap from two perspectives: firstly, CHMap as a platform for land survey maps, and secondly, CHMap as a tool for linking maps and images from disparate eras and sources.

Researchers from Temple University and Emory University will present the results of an ongoing collaboration using topic modeling and word2vec to explore the eco-poetics and eco-politics of a digitized 20th century speculative fiction corpus

The short paper will discuss the data that was generated during the editing of the records of the Imperial Diet of 1576. In a case study we will use data from our manuscript database and from the edited texts to analyse different dates and events mentioned in the records.

In 2023, Digital Humanities Research Institute at Siberian Federal University starts a working prototype of a research digital infrastructure for the aggregation, preservation, dissemination of Siberian historical and cultural heritage for historical, literary, ethnographic, art history and other kinds of research at the intersection of the humanities and computer sciences — Siberiana.online. The aim of the project is to launch a long-term initiative for digitization, analysis, and curation of the different collections of historical, cultural, and natural heritage of the Central Siberia (so-called Angara-Yenisei macro-region). The project is designed for research and education needs of the digital humanists at Siberian Federal University and world over, because Siberian artifacts and collections evoke a steady interest in the current literature.

The TEITOK REST API lets you interact with your corpus remotely - to upload documents in various formats - automatically converted to TEI/XML; to render search results; to run an NLP pipeline on the server; or download the content of corpus document, treat that content locally with local NLP tools or manual annotation tools, and then upload the results back to the server, where the new or corrected annotations will be incorporated into the original TEI/XML document without destroying any of the potentially complex annotations already in the document.

Establishing and operating research infrastructures designed for long-term use is a challenge. This holds especially true in small to medium scale institutes carrying out short-term projects. In our presentation, we would like to describe our approach to building an infrastructure for collecting and linking local cultural heritage data in Saxony.

RDF-star is the technology best suited for the creation of LOD- based editions of metadata-oriented documents such as travel jour- nals. Respectively, SPARQL-star is a powerful tool to query and analyze knowledge graphs with respect to the stored metadata in- formation for triples. We developed an RDF-star-based ontology for travel journals; as a prototype, we have used Jacob Bernoulli’s travel journal Reisbüchlein.

This 3-hour workshop will introduce span categorization as a method for the machine-annotation of text for various research tasks in the digital humanities. Participants will gain a conceptual understanding of how span categorization differs from entity recognition and complete practical exercises to train a spaCy span categorizer on the LitBank dataset.

This poster showcases three deployments of virtual reality kits and 360º video design for undergraduate classrooms. It features three examples. The first utilizes a browser-based application that allows users to upload media and view them in a 360º environment. The other examples showcase VR storytelling techniques with consumer-grade 360º cameras.

The project develops an open-source machine learning platform for East Asian Studies, the first one in the United States.Our platform will be so versatile that humanists will not have to devote time to learning various digital tools. With our sample codes and tutorials, researchers can conduct computer-aided research.

This project builds upon the work by German libraries to convert all 65,658 pages of the 536 Messkataloge (the printed "book catalogs" created for the Frankfurt and Leipzig book fairs from 1594 to 1860) from images to machine-readable plaintext, resulting in the first digital database of the Messkataloge.

This contribution focuses on the dissemination of mythLOD data. Two visualisations have been developed to represent the relations between museal and bibliographic sources preserved in the Knowledge Base. mythLOD is presented as a case study to highlight that the visualisation of narratives is not just a matter of interface, but a new service to acquire new knowledge from data.

The aim of our research is to artificially generate fake historical manuscripts using GAN. At this stage, these experiments pursue two objectives: evaluating feasibility of generating realistic fake manuscripts under certain conditions of layout, script, or date, and creating artificial data to augment HTR training. Examples are taken from Classical Armenian and Old French.

In Digital Humanities "Distant Listening" scholarship with sound, the expectation is that the data set will be clean and audible and that its metadata will be descriptive and informative.[1] In contrast to this notion, this talk demonstrates the importance of distortions in approximately seventy-five brief "tracks" or recorded songs, stories, and explanations from a folklore recording trip Zora Neale Hurston took in 1935 to Florida and Georgia with Alan Lomax and Mary Elizabeth Barnicle for the Library of Congress. Close listening to her 1935 recordings reveals that social and technical distortions are in line with how Hurston expresses the complexities of authority, authenticity, and subjectivity in her writings, which amplifying black epistemologies of self-making and creating resonant possibilities for imagining new transgressive formulations of cultural identity. This talk will consider how distortions play an important in large-scale digital projects with sound in the humanities.

The poster/presentation demonstrates a web-based search tool for the Index of Middle English Prose, built using the SRILM language modelling toolkit, which is capable of handling variation in spelling, syntax and lexicon inherent to a prestandardised vernacular such as Middle English.

This long paper examines the affordances and challenges in interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, projects and contemporary digital research infrastructures for the analysis of ancient narratives. Our case study is Pausanias's Description of Greece a 10 volume 2nd century CE traveling guide to Greece.

This poster will describe the process of planning, UX testing and developing a workspace for groups who wish to work collaboratively in Gale Digital Scholar Lab, a platform for text mining and analysis. It will detail key learning outcomes, including feedback from an initial cohort of classroom users.

SnECB is an online bibliographical resource on the whole of scholarly sources concerning the old Icelandic Snorra Edda (1220). The database is created through a crowdsourced Zotero public library; data and metadata are exported in a customized TEI file, which is displayed and searched through a front-ent TEI publisher application.

We will present challenges for a digital edition of an 18th-century gazetteer with 18000 entries on places in the Americas. Challenges range from OCR via applying TEI (dictionary module), orthographic variance, homonym disambiguation and coverage in "matching resources", to the extensive use of relative terminology for places in the prose.

This panel examine four different approaches to creating digital visualizations: database-driven networks, encoded TEI network analysis using IIIF, a material culture digital archive, and spatial analysis using GIS. Presentations will outline the details of each project and the collaborations necessary for each methodological appraoch to creating visualizations.

Texas A&M University's Center of Digital Humanities Research (CoDHR) published the New Variorum Shakespeare (NVS) open-access in digital form, beginning with two editions, The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream in 2021, with plans to move forward with new editors who are under contract to create editions digitally in Corpora, and backward to eventually include all the volumes in the series, beginning with the first NVS Edition of Romeo and Juliet (1871). The CoDHR team has designed this project with three main goals: 1) to teach students and early career researchers the concepts behind variorum editing through interface design as well as tutorials; 2) to enable searching across and within volumes and variants using Modern English and major Act-Scene-Line numbers, returning not only exportable lists, text, and bibliographical citations, but also visualizations demonstrating everything from when characters speak in plays to the evolution of variant histories; and, in the final phase of the project, 3) to be interoperable with, and allow access to, other major Shakespeare digital resources including bibliographies of criticism, digital copies of editions published since Shakespeare's time, images, and videos. Following the practice of state-of-the-art digital humanities projects, we aim to render Shakespeare's texts and international criticism available world-wide.[1] To provide a little background, "The term variorum alludes to the Latin phrase editio cum notis variorum, that is, 'an edition with the notes of the various [editors and commentators],' a phrase indicating the chief purpose of a variorum edition: namely, to collect what has been written by various commentators, critics, and editors."[2] A Shakespeare variorum sets several editions of a play side by side in order to track sentence-, word-, and character-level changes. Each NVS volume comprises hundreds of pages, collates several editions, and takes editors decades--and very often a lifetime--to complete. These print editions also tend to be difficult to navigate for anyone who isn't a Shakespeare scholar or familiar with variorums. CoDHR's Digital NVS, however, organizes and presents variorums through an interface that is accessible, intuitive, and comprehensive. Unlike the print editions, this online application showcases all of the core components of a variorum at a glance: play text, commentary notes, and textual notes, making the content easier to understand. Additionally, new NVS editors will soon be able to use the web application's backend called Corpora to build editions, start to finish, using collation tools that will enable them to complete their work more quickly and accurately. What used to take editors years to complete can now be created through a single web application that allows for remote access and virtual collaboration. Having launched the site in Beta with the publication of The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream in July 2021, we are currently working on the next phases of the project as we move out of Beta: improving accessibility and usability; digitizing all NVS print editions from Romeo and Juliet (1871) to King Lear (2020); and assisting editors with creating born-digital NVS editions, using Corpora. We are also working on developing "a suite of research tools including an advanced search across multiple editions; visualizations of search results (such as a character-based frequency plot which will convey what characters most frequently use search terms in their speeches); the ability to sort and filter play lines, textual notes, and commentary in tabular format; and the ability to download raw versions of the data as JSON or TEI. We also hope to integrate external sources of information about a given play line or bibliographic entry."[3] It is our hope that the Digital NVS, which presents variorums in a new, more accessible way, will be an excellent resource not only for future NVS editors, but for readers, scholars, educators, and performers. The poster will introduce and share the first results of the Horizon Europe project MEMORISE, which creates a framework to preserve and enhance Heritage related to Nazi Persecution by virtualizing and linking multimodal data resources and by developing and offering novel digital technologies for accessing, exploring and engaging with HNP.

Using the original, manually applied labels, this poster presents whether early modern legal texts can be automatically labelled through AI. Using Annif (by the National Library of Finland) the applicability of the tool to early modern handwritten texts is and its various backends (e.g. TF-IDF; Omikujji, and fastText) are tested.

Mapping Color in HIstory compiles pigment analysis data from existing and on-going research on scientific analysis of pigments for historical research. As a digital humanities project at the intersection of art and science, multidisciplinary collaboration is at its heart. The paper will introduce the project and discuss methods and contributions.

This study explores cultural exchanges of organ building between Central and South-Eastern Europe using multimodal analyses and interactive visualizations. Findings reveal specific trends of organ characteristics and diverse exchanges across the regions and timespans. Future research aims to further examine the findings through audiovisual digitization, acoustical analyses and virtualization approaches.

Morphological analysis is an indispensable tool for analyzing Japanese text, but it is difficult for ordinary humanities researchers to set up an environment and perform analysis from the command line. Therefore we have developed WebChamame, an online tool that allows users to perform morphological analysis using multiple period-specific UniDic dictionaries.

This paper presents the results of a study evaluating the feasibility of automatic acquisition of small-scale diachronic Latin corpora for linguistic research. The study was conducted on a collection of Neo-Latin works composed by Polish authors, using tools for automatic segmentation (Kraken) and text recognition (Calamari OCR).

This presentation describes the development and analysis of a corpus of the early Irish-language novel: one that strengthens existing resources for the comparative computational analysis of Europe's multilingual literary history and clears a path for dedicated computational analysis of the early novel tradition in Irish.

The panel has as its focus how collaboration in and implementation of DH methods has opened up a) new knowledge networks in the (conservative) field of Pietism and Religious History and b) transformed understandings of traditional disciplinary structures and hierarchies.
