Zinc (Zn), an important microelement in ruminant diet, plays a critical role in various enzymes, hormones and functional proteins involved in nutrient metabolism. The present study was conducted to assess the effect of zinc hydroxychloride (Zn 5 (OH) 8 Cl 2 ·H 2 O [ZnOHCl] and zinc sulphate (ZnSO 4 ) on nutrient utilisation, mineral metabolism and biomarkers pertaining to growth performance in pre-ruminant crossbred calves. Twenty-four crossbred calves [body weight (BW); 31.03 ± 4.30 kg; age 10 d] were randomly allocated to four treatment groups ( n = 6), i.e. no supplementation of Zn (0 mg/kg dry matter [DM]), 80 mg/kg DM Zn as ZnSO 4 (ZnS-80), 40 mg/kg DM Zn as ZnOHCl (ZnH-40) and 80 mg/kg DM Zn as ZnOHCl (ZnH-80) for 90 d experimental period. Results showed that dietary Zn supplementation improved ( p < 0.05) feed intake, BW, average daily gain, heart girth, body length, plasma growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor and thyroxin concentration; however, nutrient digestibility remained unaffected among the groups. Addition of Zn increased ( p < 0.05) Zn retention and plasma Zn concentration without affecting  retention and plasma concentration of other minerals. Retention of Zn was the highest in ZnH-80 group followed by ZnH-40, ZnS-80 and lowest in control group. Overall results of the present study indicate that regardless of sources and levels, Zn supplementation increased growth performance, plasma Zn concentration and hormones levels in pre-ruminant crossbred calves. However, supplementation of hydroxy Zn at 40 mg/kg DM had similar effect as produced by ZnSO 4 or ZnOHCl at a supplementation level of 80 mg/kg DM. Therefore, from the present study it can be concluded that ZnOHCl can be used as a Zn source for pre-ruminant calves at a lower dose compared to ZnSO 4 .

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of the inclusion of dried fermented soybean and/or rapeseed meal in piglet feed on immune parameters, blood lipid parameters, and mineral content in the blood and metacarpal bones. The study was conducted on 150 28-day-old piglets divided into 5 groups. Piglets in the control group (C) received a standard diet with soybean meal. Animals in group FR (group receiving a diet with 8% FRSM) received a diet in which a portion of the soybean meal was replaced with 8% dried fermented rapeseed meal (FRSM). Animals in group FR/FS received a diet in which a portion of the soybean meal was replaced with 6% FRSM and 2% fermented dried soybean meal (FSBM). The piglets in group FS/FR received a diet with 6% FSBM and 2% FRSM. Group FS received a diet in which a portion of the soybean meal was replaced with an 8% share of FSBM. The inclusion of 8% or 6% fermented rapeseed meal (group FR or FR/FS) in the diet of piglets had a beneficial effect on their immune status, as evidenced by the increase in plasma levels of IgG and IgA and the decrease in IL-6 relative to the control group. It also significantly increased the concentrations of minerals, i.e. P, Ca and Zn, in the blood plasma and metacarpal bones of piglets and improved the availability of iron, a key bioelement involved in haemoglobin. The use of 8% or 6% fermented soybean meal in the diet (groups FS and FS/FR) of piglets had a positive effect on blood lipid parameters, reducing CHOL and LDL-cholesterol in the plasma. In conclusion, the fermentation process enables better utilization of rapeseed or soybean meal by pigs. Yearling Angus bulls (n = 36) were assigned one of three diets: 1) 60 % concentrate as corn (CON, 0.2 % S, 13.4 % CP; n = 12); 2) 60 % dried corn distiller's grains plus solubles (60DDGS 0.5 % S, 22.0 % CP; n = 12); 3) CON diet + equivalent sulfur of 60DDGS as CaSO 4 (SULF, 0.5 % S, 13.9 % CP; n = 12) to evaluate effects of feeding 60 % DDGS or sulfur as CaSO 4 on mineral and metabolite concentrations in serum and seminal plasma. Treatment × day interactions (P < 0.03) were observed for serum Cu, Se, and Mo. For Cu at d 112, lesser (P < 0.01) concentrations were observed in bulls fed the 60DDGS compared to SULF and CON diets. There were greater (P < 0.01) concentrations of Se at d 112 in bulls fed 60DDGS than CON and SULF diets. Concentrations of Mo were greater at d 56 and 112 (P < 0.01) in bulls fed CON compared to SULF and 60DDGS diets. In seminal plasma, there were treatment × day interactions (P < 0.02) for Cu and Mo. For Cu, at d 112, there was a lesser (P < 0.01) concentration in the bulls fed SULF compared to CON and 60DDGS diets. For Mo, there was a greater (P < 0.01) concentration in bulls fed the CON than 60DDGS and SULF diets at d 56 and 112. Oligosaccharides are complex, non-digestible glycans found in large abundance in human milk. The abundance and the profile of bovine milk oligosaccharides and bovine milk based in infant formula differ from those in human milk. Recently, some human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) have been supplemented to infant formula, however, not all forms have been available in large scale. The objective of the study was to investigate the dose-dependent effects of an enzymatically-synthesized 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL) sodium salt supplemented to swine milk replacer on growth, hematological parameters, and organ microscopic assessment in our pre-clinical neonatal pig model. Two-day-old male and female pigs ( n = 47) were provided one of four experimental diets for 21 days. Diets were formulated to contain 0 (CON), 300 (LOW), 600 (MOD), or 1200 (HIGH) mg/L of 6'-SL sodium salt. On days 8 and 22, samples were collected for hematological and histological analyses. Supplemental 6'-SL sodium salt at all doses supported growth and development comparable to those observed in control animals. In addition, serum chemistries, hematology, and organ microscopic structure were unaffected by 6'-SL ( p > 0.05). Thus, addition of enzymatically-synthesized 6'-SL to a milk replacer formula supported growth and clinical outcomes similar to the control formula in the neonatal piglet.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding synthetic zeolite A for 3 wk before expected calving on peripartal serum mineral concentrations, hypocalcemia, oxidant status, and performance. Holstein cows (n = 55) entering their second or greater lactations were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 dietary treatments starting 21 d before expected calving: control (CON: 40% corn silage, 33% wheat straw, and 27% concentrate; n = 29) or experimental [EXP: CON plus zeolite A (X-Zelit, Protekta Inc., Lucknow, ON, Canada/Vilofoss, Graasten, Denmark; n = 26) at an inclusion rate of 3.3% of dry matter, targeting 500 g/d as-fed]. Cows were fed the same postpartum diet and housed in individual tiestalls through 28 d in milk. Cows fed EXP had higher serum Ca concentrations as parturition approached and during the immediate postpartum period. Serum P concentrations were lower for the EXP-fed cows during the prepartum period and the first 2 d of lactation, whereas serum Mg concentrations were lower than those of the CON-fed cows only during the immediate periparturient period. Cows fed EXP had decreased prevalence of subclinical hypocalcemia (SCH) from d -1 through 3 relative to day of parturition, with the largest difference occurring within the first day postpartum. Prepartum dry matter intake tended to be decreased and rumination was decreased in cows fed EXP; however; postpartum dry matter intake, rumination, milk yield, milk component yield, and colostrum measurements did not differ between treatments. Cows fed EXP tended to have increased hazard of pregnancy by 150 d in milk when controlling for parity compared with CON-fed cows; potential reproductive benefits merit further study. This study demonstrated that zeolite A supplementation during the prepartum period results in markedly improved serum Ca concentrations around parturition and similar postpartum performance compared with controls and is effective at decreasing hypocalcemia in multiparous Holstein cows., (Copyright © 2019 American Dairy Science Association. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of Cu, Zn, and Mn source on measures of 1) preferential intake of mineral-concentrated supplements and 2) mineral status and pre- and postweaning performance of beef calves. In Exp. 1, 4 trials were conducted to assess the effect of source of Cu (750 mg/kg; Trial 1), Zn (2,000 mg/kg; Trial 2), Mn (3,000 mg/kg; Trial 3), and all 3 elements (Trial 4) on preferential intake of mineral-concentrated supplements. Supplements differed only by source of Cu, Zn, and Mn, which included hydroxychloride (hydroxy), sulfate, and organic options. In each trial, the 3 supplements were simultaneously offered to 8 pens of early-weaned calves (2 calves/pen; 126 ± 8.0 kg average BW) for a 4-h period and preferential intake was determined. When offered the opportunity to select among 3 supplement options, calves consumed more ( < 0.001) supplement containing hydroxy vs. organic or sulfate sources of Cu (Trial 1), Zn (Trial 2), and Mn (Trial 3). In Trial 4, when all 3 elements were combined within a single supplement, calves almost exclusively selected ( < 0.001) the hydroxy vs. organic or sulfate sources (82.9, 10.4, and 6.7% of total supplement intake, respectively [SEM 3.16]). In Exp. 2, calves were supplemented at a rate of 114 g/calf daily for 84 d before weaning (2 calves/pasture; 10 and 12 pastures in yr 1 and 2, respectively). Supplements were formulated to contain no supplemental minerals (control); hydroxy Cu, Zn, and Mn; or copper sulfate, zinc sulfate, and manganese oxide (sulfate/oxide). Total supplement intake was greater ( = 0.01) for calves consuming the hydroxy vs. the sulfate/oxide sources of Cu, Zn, and Mn (9.0 vs. 7.2 kg [SEM 0.45]). Preweaning calf BW gain did not differ ( ≥ 0.15) among treatments; however, calves provided mineral-fortified supplements had greater ( = 0.003) liver concentrations of Co and Se and tended ( = 0.07) to have greater liver concentrations of Cu at weaning compared with the controls. Calves provided mineral-fortified vs. control supplements had greater ( ≤ 0.05) peak concentrations of ceruloplasmin and haptoglobin and less BW gain during in the 16-d postweaning period. These data demonstrate greater voluntary intake of mineral-concentrated supplements among calves offered hydroxy vs. sulfate or organic sources of Cu, Zn, and Mn. Preweaning mineral-fortified supplementation increased calf mineral status, heightened inflammatory responsiveness, and decreased BW gain during the immediate postweaning period.

Along the West Coast of Barbados a unique relationship has developed between endangered green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and humans. Fishermen began inadvertently provisioning these foraging turtles with fish offal discarded from their boats. Although initially an indirect supplementation, this activity became a popular attraction for visitors. Subsequently, demand for this activity increased, and direct supplementation or provisioning with food began. Food items offered included raw whole fish (typically a mixture of false herring [Harengula clupeola] and pilchard [Harengula humeralis]), filleted fish, and lesser amounts of processed food such as hot dogs, chicken, bread, or various other leftovers. Alterations in behavior and growth rates as a result of the provisioning have been documented in this population. The purpose of this study was to determine how tourism-based human interactions are affecting the overall health of this foraging population and to determine what potential health risks these interactions may create for sea turtles. Juvenile green sea turtles (n=29) were captured from four sites off the coast of Barbados, West Indies, and categorized into a group that received supplemental feeding as part of a tour (n=11) or an unsupplemented group (n=18) that consisted of individuals that were captured at sites that did not provide supplemental feeding. Following capture, a general health assessment of each animal was conducted. This included weight and morphometric measurements, a systematic physical examination, determination of body condition score and body condition index, epibiota assessment and quantification, and clinical pathology including hematologic and biochemical testing and nutritional assessments. The supplemented group was found to have changes to body condition, vitamin, mineral, hematologic, and biochemical values. Based on these results, recommendations were made to decrease negative behaviors and health impacts for turtles as a result of this provisioning.

Circulating concentrations of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E, minerals, fatty acids, and lipids were quantified in five captive greater one-horned rhinoceroses (Rhinoceros unicornis) throughout two time periods, during which two diets were offered. Animals were fed mixed-grass hay and concentrate pellets while managed in barns for winter housing (April sampling, winter diet). During the spring and summer, animals were fed the same amount of concentrate pellet but had free access to North American browse and grasses instead of dried forage (November sampling, summer diet). Levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and α-tocopherol were statistically higher in summer diet samples than in winter diet samples. Retinol was not statistically different between seasons, and β-carotene concentrations were undetectable at both time periods. Cholesterol, triglycerides, and non-esterified fatty acids were all significantly elevated following access to unlimited fresh forages in summer. Serum electrolytes were not different between the two time periods but differences in circulating minerals were noted (cobalt, inorganic iodine, and magnesium elevated in winter diet samples; selenium and zinc elevated in summer diet). Access to non-native fresh green forages resulted in improvement of several nutritional parameters in greater one-horned rhinoceroses, implying a benefit when fresh browse and access to grass is provided., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

This study was conducted to determine the chromium content of different feedstuffs, their estimated requirement, and effect of dietary Cr supplementation on nutrient intake, nutrient utilization, growth performance, and mineral balance in buffalo calves during summer season. Levels of Cr was higher in cultivated fodder, moderate in cakes and cereal grains, while straw, grasses, and non-conventional feeds were poor in Cr content. To test the effect of Cr supplementation in buffalo calves, 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 ppm of inorganic Cr were fed to 24 buffalo calves. Buffalo calves were randomly assigned to four treatments (n = 6) and raised for 120 days. A metabolic trial for a period of 7 days was conducted after 3 months of dietary treatments. Blood samples were collected at fortnight interval for plasma mineral estimation. The results suggested that dietary Cr supplementation in summer did not have any affects (P > 0.05) on feed consumption, growth performance, nitrogen balance, and physiological variables. However, dietary Cr supplementation had significant effect (P < 0.05) on balance and plasma Cr (ppb) levels without affecting (P > 0.05) balance and plasma levels of other trace minerals. The estimated Cr requirement of buffalo calves during summer season was calculated to be 0.044 mg/kg body mass and 10.37 ppm per day. In conclusion, dietary Cr supplementation has regardless effect on feed consumption, mass gain, and nutrient utilization in buffalo calves reared under heat stress conditions. However, supplementation of Cr had positive effect on its balance and plasma concentration without interacting with other trace minerals.

Mineral deficiencies in cattle, widespread in East Africa, impair optimal health and production and consequently place a great burden on the farmers' income. Therefore, detection of shortages and imbalances of specific minerals is essential. Our objective was to evaluate the mineral status of grazing cattle around the Gilgel Gibe catchment in Ethiopia and associated factors. In study I, individual animal plasma and herd faecal Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, S, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu concentrations were determined in adult zebu cattle (Bos indicus; n=90) grazing at three altitudes around the catchment, whilst recording body condition score and sex. In study II, liver samples of adult male zebu cattle (n=53) were analysed for Cu, Zn, Fe, Se and Mo concentrations and inspected for parasitic infections. Plasma and liver analyses revealed a Cu deficiency problem in the area, since 68 and 47 % of cattle, respectively, were Cu deprived according to diagnostic criteria for Bos taurus cattle. High hepatic Mo concentrations in 17 % of cases might reflect excessive dietary Mo intake. Liver Se and plasma Na concentrations were too low in 92 and 80 % of cattle. Plasma Mn concentrations were largely below the detection limit. Plasma Cu as well as Ca concentrations were lower in the lowest altitude compared to the highest altitude group (P<0.05), whereas lean to medium cattle had lower plasma Cu concentrations (P<0.05). No differences in hepatic mineral concentrations were detected between cattle with different types of parasitic infection. In conclusion, bovine mineral deficiencies were present in the Gilgel Gibe area and were associated with grazing altitude and body condition score.

This study evaluated nutrient intake and relevant blood parameters of 14 captive cheetahs, randomly assigned to a meat-only diet (supplemented beef, SB) or a whole prey diet (whole rabbit, WR) for 4 weeks each. Despite a higher food intake, daily metabolizable energy intake was lower when fed WR (308 kJ BW(-1) ) compared with SB (347 kJ BW(-1) ) (P = 0.002). The ratio of protein to fat was markedly lower for WR (2.3:1) compared with SB (8.8:1), which was reflected in higher serum urea levels when fed SB (P = 0.033), and a tendency for elevated cholesterol levels when fed WR (P = 0.055). Taurine intake of cheetahs fed WR was low (0.06% on DM basis); however, analytical error during taurine analysis cannot be ruled out. Feeding WR resulted in a well-balanced mineral intake, in contrast to SB. The latter provided a low calcium:phosphorus ratio (1:2.3), thereby increasing the risk of metabolic bone disease. The high zinc content of SB (200 mg/kg DM), compared with WR (94 mg/kg DM), was reflected in higher serum zinc concentrations (P = 0.011). Feeding WR resulted in an increase in serum vitamin A (P = 0.011). Therefore, the risk of hypervitaminosis A in captive cheetahs when fed WR exclusively on a long-term basis should be evaluated. Serum electrolytes, minerals, blood biochemical and plasma enzymes were studied in heat exposed buffalo heifers supplemented with yeast powder in feed to alleviate the adverse effects of heat stress. Eighteen healthy Murrah buffalo heifers (270-280) kg were divided into three groups. Animals of group I were kept in shed and served as control, while group II and group III were exposed in a psychrometric chamber at 40°C for 4 hrs daily for 16 days continuously. The animals in group III were also supplemented with yeast powder at 10 g per animal per day. The serum sodium, potassium and chloride levels decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in group II and their levels tended to be maintained in group III. Serum calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, glucose and total cholesterol concentration decreased (P < 0.05) significantly whereas total protein increased in group II due to heat stress. The levels of these minerals tended to be normal in group III. The plasma concentration of SGOT and SGPT increased significantly (P < 0.05), whereas the concentration of plasma alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase decreased due to thermal exposure. The levels of these enzymes tended to be normal in group III. The results indicated significant deviations in blood biochemical due to thermal stress and their levels tended to be normal in yeast supplemented group of buffalo heifers.

The aim of the research was to determine the concentration of total protein and its fractions as well as the concentration of selected mineral components in the blood serum of male broiler chickens Cobb 500 fed diets with different cellulose content. Blood samples were collected for examination from the birds' pterygoid canal veins on their 42 day of age. There was no influence of cellulose preparation on the content of total protein and its fractions: albumins, alfa1-, alfa2-, beta-, gamma-globulins, albumin to globulin ratio, inorganic phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride and iron concentrations in blood serum. The highest calcium concentration (P < 0.05) was detected in the blood serum of males fed a diet with the highest cellulose content (0.75-0.95%). Simultaneously, a tendency of increased calcium content was observed along with an increased amount of pure cellulose in diets. The lowest magnesium level (P < 0.05) was observed in the blood of birds fed diets with the lowest amount of cellulose (0.25-0.45%). The magnesium level in the blood of birds fed a diet with higher amounts of cellulose did not considerably differ from the control group. Results from the current study suggest that introduction of a limited amount of pure cellulose into the diet of broiler chickens does not affect total protein concentration and protein fractions but can influence the mineral content in the blood serum.

This study was conducted to examine the influence of varying dietary cation anion difference (DCAD) on nutrient intake, digestibility, ruminal characteristics, blood acid base status and in situ digestion kinetics in Nili Ravi buffalo bulls. Four iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric diets having -110, +110, +220 and +330 mEq/kg dry matter (DM) DCAD were formulated which were represented by A (anionic), LC (low cationic), MC (medium cationic) and HC (high cationic), respectively. These diets were used in four ruminally cannulated Nili Ravi buffalo bulls in a 4 × 4 Latin Square Design. Improved nutrient intake was recorded at high DCAD levels while digestibility remained unaffected. Ruminal ammonia nitrogen, rumen pH, acetate and acetate : propionate ratio were higher in buffalo bulls fed MC and HC diets than those fed A and LC diets. Blood pH and HCO₃⁻ also tended to increase as DCAD level was increased in the diet. Serum Ca and Cl concentrations were higher in bulls fed A and LC diets whereas serum Mg, P and S remained unaffected. Urine pH increased with increasing DCAD level. Nitrogen intake and blood urea nitrogen concentrations were also higher in bulls fed MC and HC diets. There was a consistent increase in ruminal DM and neutral detergent fiber degradability, rate of disappearance and extent of digestion at high DCAD levels in the diet. The present study was performed in order to evaluate the effects of lower than usual industry levels of dietary trace minerals on plasma levels, faecal excretion, performance, mortality and morbidity in growing-finishing pigs in a hot African climate. Group 1 (n = 100 pigs) received a diet with common industry levels of trace minerals. Group 2 (n = 100 pigs) received reduced dietary trace mineral levels but were fed the same basic diet as Group 1. Mortality, morbidity, pig performance and carcass measurements were evaluated. Two pigs in Group 1 and three pigs in Group 2 died. Thirteen pigs in Group 1 and 27 pigs in Group 2 were medically treated (P < 0.05). Carcass masses, back fat depth, loin depth, and lean percent were not significantly different between the groups. However, the carcasses when evaluated revealed a non-significant higher back fat thickness, lower loin eye area and percentage of fat-free lean in barrows compared to gilts within each group. Despite lower initial masses, pigs fed diets containing industry levels of trace minerals were heavier (P < 0.05) and had a higher (P< 0.05) than average daily gains compared to those that received a diet containing lower levels of trace minerals. Faecal zinc excretion was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in pigs fed with lower dietary zinc levels. Copper, manganese and iron excretion were not affected (P > 0.05) by the dietary levels of these trace minerals. Plasma trace mineral concentrations were not affected by the dietary treatment.

Serum concentrations of amino acids, fatty acids, lipoproteins, vitamins A and E, and minerals in zoo giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) were compared to values obtained from free-ranging giraffes in an effort to identify potential nutritional differences in the zoo population. Zoo giraffes have a specific set of maladies that may be nutritionally related, including peracute mortality, energy malnutrition, pancreatic disease, urolithiasis, hoof disease, and severe intestinal parasitism. Dietary requirements for giraffes are not known; invasive studies used with domestic animals cannot be performed on zoo animals. Though domestic animal standards are often used to evaluate nutritional health of exotic animals, they may not be the most appropriate standards to use. Serum samples from 20 zoo giraffes at 10 zoological institutions in the United States were compared to previously collected samples from 24 free-ranging giraffes in South Africa. Thirteen of the zoo animal samples were collected from animals trained for blood collection, and seven were banked samples obtained from a previous serum collection. Dietary information was also collected on each zoo giraffe; most zoo giraffe diets consisted of alfalfa-based pellets (acid detergent fiber-16), alfalfa hay, and browse in varying quantities. Differences between zoo and free-ranging giraffes, males and females, and adults and subadults were analyzed with the use of a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial and Fisher's Least Significant Difference (LSD) for mean separation. Of the 84 parameters measured, 54 (60%) were significantly different (P < or = 0.05) between zoo and free-ranging giraffes. Nine (11%) items were significantly different (P < or = 0.05) between adult and subadult animals. Only one parameter, sodium concentration, was found to be significantly different (P < or = 0.05) between genders. Further investigation in zoo giraffe diets is needed to address the differences seen in this study and the potentially related health problems.

It is well established that grazing Neotyphodium coenophialum-infected forages results in reduced BW gain and serum prolactin concentrations of cattle. The objective of this study was to determine the potential effects of toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue consumption on blood metabolites, carcass characteristics, and content of proteins critical for AA metabolism in the liver, kidney, and LM tissue of growing steers. Steers grazed a low toxic endophyte (LE; 0.023 microg/g ergot alkaloids) tall fescue-mixed grass pasture (n = 9; BW = 266 +/- 10.9 kg; 5.7 ha) or a high toxic endophyte (HE; 0.746 microg/g of ergot alkaloids) tall fescue pasture (n = 10; BW = 267 +/- 14.5 kg; 5.7 ha) from June 14 through at least September 11 (> or =89 d). No difference was observed for BW (P < 0.10) for the overall 85-d growth period. Also, no differences were observed for ribeye area/100 kg of HCW (P > 0.91), backfat (P > 0.95), or backfat/100 kg of HCW (P > 0.67). However, ADG (P < 0.01), final BW (P < 0.05), HCW (P < 0.01), dressing percentage (P < 0.01), ribeye area (P < 0.01), whole liver wet weight (P < 0.01), and whole liver wet weight/100 kg of end BW (P < 0.01) were greater for LE steers than HE steers. After 85 d of grazing, serum concentrations of alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.05), alanine aminotransferase (P < 0.01), aspartate aminotransferase (P < 0.03), cholesterol (P < 0.01), lactate dehydrogenase (P < 0.01), and prolactin (P < 0.01) were less for HE than LE steers. At slaughter, hepatic content of cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (P < 0.01) was greater in HE steers than LE steers. Hepatic content of aspartate aminotransferase (P < 0.01) also was greater, whereas renal and LM content were not (P > or = 0.42). No differences (P > or = 0.15) were observed for hepatic, renal, and LM content of alanine aminotransferase, glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase, and 3 glutamate transport proteins. These data indicate that the HE steers displayed classic endophyte toxicity symptoms for growth and blood variables, classic symptoms that were concomitant with novelly identified altered glucogenic capacity of the liver and decreases in carcass characteristics.

Objective: To determine the changes in Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, S, Cu, Fe and Zn concentrations of milk during the lactation in pasture-fed Thoroughbred mares and then calculate the dietary mineral requirements of the sucking foal and the lactating mare., Procedure: Milk was sampled on days 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and at various times between 55 to 65, 85 to 95 and 135 to 150 days after parturition from 21 pasture-fed mares. The concentrations of macro- and micro-elements in the milk were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry., Results: Concentrations (mg/L) of these elements were highest in colostrum (Mg 302, Na 561, K 955, S 1035, Cu 0.76, Fe 0.79 and Zn 5.5) except for Ca (1245) and P (895), which where highest on day 7. The mean milk mineral element concentrations (mg/L) over days 55 to 150 were Ca 843, P 543, Mg 47, Na 120, K 590, S 219, Cu 0.19, Fe 0.34 and Zn 2.1. The mean plasma element concentrations (mg/L) over the same period were Ca 120, P 77.1, Mg 17.0, Na 3110, K 168, S 983, Cu 1.1, Fe 1.5 and Zn 0.49. Concentration gradients between plasma and milk were observed and, in the case of Ca, P, Mg, K and Zn, their concentrations in milk were greater than those in plasma, while a reverse situation was observed for Na, S, Cu and Fe., Conclusion: With the exception of Ca and P, the highest concentrations of mineral elements were observed in the colostrum. The nursing foal should have access to good pasture or creep feed, because the intakes of Ca, P and Cu from milk may be less than optimum to meet the daily mineral element requirements.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the influences of Ca and P contents in an anionic diet on the mineral metabolism in plasma, urine and bone in periparturient diary cows. Fifteen multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were divided into 3 dietary groups (5 cows/group) by dietary Ca and P contents and dietary cation-anion balance [(Na + K) - (Cl + S) mEq/kg DM]; diet 1 [low Ca (0.46%), low P (0.24%), cationic (+195.8 mEq/kg DM)]; diet 2 [low Ca (0.46%), low P (0.24%), anionic (-32.4 mEq/kg DM)]; and diet 3 [high Ca (0.93%), high P (0.60%), anionic (-41.0 mEq/kg DM)]. Cows were fed one of these 3 diets from approximately 4 weeks before the expected calving date to 5 days after calving. There was no outbreak of milk fever in any cows fed these 3 diets; however, plasma Ca levels at 1 and 2 days after calving tended to be higher in the cows fed diet 3 than those in the cows fed diets 1 or 2. Fractional urinary excretion of Ca in the cows fed diet 2 or 3 was higher than that in the cows fed diet 1. Fractional urinary excretion and plasma level of Pi were higher during the periparturient period in the cows fed diet 3 than those in the cows fed diets 1 or 2. There were no significant differences in plasma parathyroid hormone levels among the 3 groups. In the spongy substance of ilium at 5 days after calving, the Ca and Mg contents bone volume and trabecular thickness were the lowest, but not significant, in the cows fed diet 2. These data suggest that sufficient Ca and P contents in an anionic diet may be effective in maintaining plasma Ca and Pi levels of periparturient cows and further in preventing of potential bone damage brought about by increased urinary mineral excretion following the feeding of an anionic diet.

Concentrations of calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium were observed in the blood serum of beef bullocks after their transfer from winter feed ration to grazing and in the successive grazing cycles within two years. Blood samples were taken by puncture from the vena jugularis from the identical six bullocks. In the first year of observation, blood collection took place a week before transfer to grazing while in the second year of observation twice in weekly intervals before grazing. In the period of grazing, the biological material was sampled in weekly intervals from week 1 to week 5 (May--Ist cycle, June--IInd cycle), then in week 10 (July--IIIrd cycle) and in week 14 (August--IVth cycle of grazing). Calcium concentrations in the blood serum of beef bullocks (Fig. 1) decreased after transfer from stable feeding to grazing while this drop was significant in the second year of observation (P < 0.05). That period was followed by an increase in serum calcium concentrations in both target groups. The concentrations of inorganic phosphorus in the serum of beef bullocks (Fig. 2) dropped after transfer to grazing but a gradual increase in the values was recorded in week 4 in the first year of observation and in week 5 of grazing in the 2nd year of observation. These changes were not statistically significant. The concentrations of serum magnesium in beef bullocks (Fig. 3) statistically significantly dropped (P < 0.05) after transfer from stable feeding to grazing in week 3 in the first year of observation and in week 4 of grazing in the second year of observation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Holstein cows were assigned to diets containing no supplemental fat, supplemental fat from whole cottonseed, or supplemental fat from whole cottonseed plus Ca salts of fatty acids (Megalac). The TMR contained 46% forage and 54% concentrate or mixtures of concentrate and whole cottonseed on a DM basis and were fed from wk 3 through 44 of lactation. The mean fat content of the three diets was 3.0, 4.7, and 6.4% of DM for control, whole cottonseed, and whole cottonseed plus Ca salts of fatty acids, respectively. Supplemental fat increased NEL intake, percentage of milk fat, milk fat production, and rate of recovery of BW and body condition. Supplemental fat decreased milk protein production in early lactation, but not in late lactation. Addition of supplemental fat had no significant effect on ruminal concentration of VFA, NH3 N, or in situ digestibility of fiber. The proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in milk fat was increased with supplemental whole cottonseed or whole cottonseed plus Ca salts of fatty acids. During the first 3 mo of lactation, the proportion increased of fatty acids C14 or less, C16, and C18:2. Proportion of fatty acids C16:1 and C18:1 correspondingly decreased. The change in composition of milk fatty acids during early lactation is consistent with the use of body fat for milk synthesis.

This study was conducted using fourty cross-bred ewes in 5 groups of which one was kept as a control and the others were infected with metacercariae of Fasciola gigantica twice at the beginning of the experiment and 200 days from the first. The four infected groups fed on basal ration or high protein ration with or without mineral mixture. Blood samples were taken from the five groups to assess the concentrations of plasma fibrinogen and serum total proteins, albumin, globulin, calcium and inorganic phosphorous. Results indicated that ewes total serum protein, albumin and globulin were decreased by Fasciola infection. The decrease was only significant in ewes fed basal ration with or without mineral mixture. Mineral mixture had no effect on the later blood parameters of infected ewes although little improvement in blood serum globulin was noticed. Plasma fibrinogen decreased significantly by infection. The level of plasma fibrinogen was improved by feeding high protein ration but did not affect by adding mineral mixture to any of the ration used. Infection was also found to decrease blood serum inorganic phosphorous but not calcium level. Feeding high protein ration with or without mineral supplement maintained blood serum inorganic phosphorous as that of the uninfected ewes. Blood serum calcium to phosphorous ratio of ewes fed only basal ration was significantly higher than that of other groups.

The macro mineral status of cattle in the Selale highlands of Ethiopia was evaluated during the rainy and dry seasons of 1989 and 1990 in terms of mineral concentrations in soils, feeds, blood plasma and faeces on 25 farms. Bone samples from animals of local breeds from a slaughter house were collected during the rainy and dry seasons of 1990. Soils were analysed for pH, organic matter, Ca, P, Mg, Na and K. The results indicated wide variation in the concentrations of minerals on different farms. Available feeds in the area consist of pasture, hay, the straw of barley, oats and teff, and the grains of barley and oats. Pasture grass and other feeds were found to be deficient in Na, P and Mg in relation to dietary requirements. Analyses of blood plasma from crossbred and local cattle showed that a number of samples contained P below the critical level of 1.45 mmol/litre. Effects of year and season were significant for Ca, P, Mg and K. The effect of age was significant for P (P < 0.001). Faecal analyses revealed that about 80% of animals were deficient in Na. Wide variations in the mineral content of soils and lack of significant correlations among soil, pasture and blood plasma indicated that soil and pasture analyses are not reliable in assessing macro mineral status of grazing cattle in this environment. Analyses of bone and blood for Ca and P, blood for Mg and faeces for Na appear to provide better indices.

Ninety-six crossbred weanling pigs (36 d of age, initial weight of 8.8 kg) were used in a three-phase study to determine the effects of feeding an aflatoxin-contaminated corn (AC) diet (922 ppb of aflatoxin B1) with and without sodium bentonite (clay) on performance, liver function, and mineral metabolism. In the nursery phase, control corn (NC) or AC was fed in corn-soybean meal diets with and without 1% clay for 6 wk. Compared with NC, AC decreased ADFI and ADG (P < .01) and increased serum activities of gamma-glutamyltransferase (P < .01) and alkaline phosphatase (P < .05). In the growing phase, 48 pigs from the nursery phase were fed NC but continued on their respective clay treatments for 5 wk. Pigs previously fed AC had higher (P < .01) ADFI and lower (P < .05) gain/feed, serum Ca, K, and glucose; ADG, other serum values, and liver minerals were not affected by treatments. In the metabolism phase, 24 barrows from the nursery phase were continued on the same corn and clay treatments for two 4-d total collections of urine and feces. Feeding AC increased (P < .05) P and Na absorption. The addition of clay lowered Mg and Na absorption (P < .01) for both AC and NC. Significant interactions for many minerals indicated that the effects on mineral metabolism were more pronounced when AC was fed. Serum and liver mineral concentrations were generally unaffected by the treatments in all phases. Feeding clay with AC results in partial restoration of performance and liver function without greatly influencing mineral metabolism.

Concentrations of calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium (Tab. I) were followed in the blood serum of calves in the period of milk diet and weaning (at the age of nine weeks), and the results were evaluated with respect to their deviations from the reference values. The average concentrations of calcium and inorganic phosphorus did not show any significant variations and they were within the range of reference values. Magnesium concentrations in the blood serum of calves on all-vegetable diet (11 weeks of age) were significantly higher (p < 0.01) in comparison with the starting value (at the age of two weeks) while they approached the lower boundary of reference range as late as at the age of nine weeks (Fig. 1). The highest percentage of hypocalcaemia (33.3%) and hypophosphataemia (47.3%) in individual animals was determined at weaning. The highest level of hypomagnesaemia was observed at the age of two and five weeks (57.1% of the calves). The subnormal values of the mentioned parameters were markedly adjusted in the calves on all-vegetable diet (Fig. 2). The concentrations of serum sodium and potassium (Fig. 3) were decreasing in the calves on milk diet, but after weaning they were stabilized at the values which were recorded at the age of five weeks (Na 146.3 mmol/l and K 5.19 mmol/l). With the exception of weaning, the average sodium concentrations in the blood serum of calves were slightly above the upper boundary of the reference range, their significant drop was observed only at weaning (p < 0.05). The concentrations of serum potassium were within the range of reference values except the values at the age of two weeks and the potassium concentrations in the serum were significantly lower at the age of 5, 9 and 11 weeks in comparison with the starting value (p < 0.01). The highest percentage of hypernatraemia (81%) and hyperkalaemia (85.7%) was determined in individual animals at the age of two weeks (Fig. 4).

The use of differently processed soya bean as a major source of dietary protein was evaluated in a haematological study using broiler chickens in which groundnut cake (GNC), raw soya bean (RSB), roasted soya bean (RtSB), cooked soya bean (CSB) and soya bean oil cake (SBC) were fed on equi-protein basis. The results showed that: 1. Red blood cell (RBC) count and haemoglobin content of blood significantly (P less than 0.05) increased in chicks fed RSB relative to the other soya bean diets. Feeding differently processed soya bean significantly (P less than 0.05) influenced mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) while the mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) was not significantly influenced. 2. Both the total white blood cell (WBC) count and the monocytes were significantly (P less than 0.05) influenced by the dietary treatments. Chicks fed processed soya bean generally had higher number of monocytes. 3. Physical properties determined were specific gravity and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The latter was significantly (P less than 0.05) lower in all the processed soya bean-fed chicks. 4. Minerals determined in blood were Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu and P. Of all these, chicks fed RSB had significantly (P less than 0.01) lower levels of blood Mg and marked decrease in Ca.

A Ca kinetic study with a four-compartment model being fitted to radioisotope and balance data using the CONSAM (conversational, simulation, analysis, and modeling) computer program was conducted to examine the effects of dietary cation-anion balance, calculated as milliequivalents [(Na + K] - (Cl + S)]. Twelve crossbred wethers were used as eucalcemic control (period 1); then Ca loss during lactation was simulated by continuous infusion of ethylene glycol tetraacetate (period 2). Dietary cation-anion balance was manipulated by supplementation of various mineral salts and was +339, +35, and -127 meq of kg DM-1 during period 1 and +429, +68, and -147 meq of kg DM-1 during period 2 for control and two treatments, respectively. Animals responded to the simulated lactational Ca loss (period 2) by increasing true intestinal absorption of Ca and bone resorption and by reducing Ca accretion by bone. No difference was observed in concentration of total Ca in plasma, but treatments produced increased concentration of plasma ionized Ca during both periods. Both treatments produced hypercalciuria during both periods, and the lowest cation-anion balance increased true intestinal absorption of Ca and reduced bone accretion during period 2. The size of total exchangeable Ca pool did not differ between treatments or periods, but amount of Ca movement between the pools increased with the intermediate cation-anion balance during period 1 and with both treatments during period 2 compared with control. These results indicated that feeding reduced cation-anion balance diets increased Ca flux through the exchangeable Ca pool with no changes in the size of the pool, particularly when Ca demand was increased.

Thirty yearling Santa Gertrudis-sired heifers (average initial weight 238 kg) were continuously grazed (five heifers/pasture) on six 2-ha oat-wheat small grain pastures for 112 d to determine the effect of fertilization of pastures with urea (U) vs ammonium sulfate (AS) on mineral status and performance of heifers. Pastures were fertilized with either U, at 200 kg/ha, or AS, at 438 kg/ha, to provide 92 kg of N/ha in November 1987 and March 1988. Ammonium sulfate provided 107 kg of S/ha. Forage samples were collected during each month. Heifers were initially weighed following an overnight fast and at the end of four consecutive 28-d intervals (Periods 1 to 4). Serum and ruminal fluid were collected on d 56 and 112. Pastures fertilized with AS had a greater (P less than .10) in vitro dry matter disappearance during Periods 2 and 3. Ammonium sulfate-fertilized pastures had greater than (P less than .05) S concentrations from January 29 through termination of the trial. There were no differences in ADG (P less than .28) or gain/ha (GPH; P less than .43) over 112 d; however, heifer ADG was greater (P less than .08) in Period 3 and tended to be greater (P less than .16) in Period 2 for those animals grazing U-fertilized pastures. Pastures receiving AS produced less (P less than .04) GPH during Period 2. Ammonium sulfate fertilization in this trial had no effect on forage K, Ca, P, Mg, Cu, or Mo mineral concentrations or on serum mineral and ruminal VFA concentrations, but it did result in an increase in IVDMD and a trend for decreased ADG apparently associated with a decrease in forage intake.

Growth and clinical biochemistry were examined over 30 wk in 42 light horse weanlings fed high-forage diets (73 to 77% alfalfa) or high-concentrate diets (63 to 65% grain and grain by-products) that were either low (.24 to .35%), normal (.68%) or high (.95 to 1.06%) in P. Body weights and blood samples were taken every 2 wk. Forage and concentrate diets contained 2.65 and 3.09 Mcal digestible energy/kg DM, respectively. Calcium and P digestibilities were highest (P less than .01) in those horses fed the low P diets, but only horses fed forage-low P diets may have absorbed insufficient P. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity, serum Ca, serum Mg and plasma Cu concentrations were unaffected by diet but varied (P less than .01) among sampling periods. The concentrations of serum Ca and P of all groups fluctuated to wk 10 before being stabilized at means of 2.77 and 2.03 mmol/liter, respectively. Plasma Zn concentrations increased quadratically with age and were 3.8% greater (P less than .05) for concentrate-fed horses than for forage-fed horses. Mild to moderate physitis and flexure limb deformities occurred in 88% of the weanlings principally between wk 6 and 8 of the study. Limb deformities had largely resolved by wk 12. Marginally deficient P intakes did not alter productivity, feed intake, blood mineral concentration in the final 20 wk or the occurrence of musculoskeletal abnormalities in weanling horses.

Blood serum samples were obtained from 114 crossbred calves on a feed trial under feedlot conditions at the end of a 56-day feeding period. Average values for 19 blood components were determined. The effects of the 3 trial rations and 2 electrolyte treatments were analyzed. Except for inorganic phosphates, urea nitrogen, cholesterol, glucose, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase most mean values were similar to those in dairy cattle. Urea nitrogen values differed significantly (P less than 0.05) in animals fed different rations apparently reflecting the crude protein content of each ration. The mean values presented can be used as base-line data for comparison with other similar studies or with values from diseased animals.

The purpose of this study was to determine if plasma mineral levels and plasma or hepatic ascorbic acid would be affected by the composition of the diet fed to chickens with higher circulating estrogen levels. Three-week-old broiler chicks were implanted with estradiol dipropionate to give estimated release rates of 0, 3.2, and 8.0 micrograms/bird/day. The chicks were fed a corn-soy diet (CS) or a diet containing 5% fish meal, 5% alfalfa meal and 10% torula yeast (FAY). The FAY diet resulted in significantly lower hepatic lipid and plasma iron, copper, manganese, and zinc in chicks administered the highest level of estrogen. In two experiments laying hens were fed either CS or diets containing fish meal (FM), alfalfa meal (AM), distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or wheat-soy (WS) for 4 weeks. In the first experiment, liver lipid content was not significantly affected by diet composition, but plasma iron was significantly reduced by the AM, DDGS, and WS diets. No significant effects on copper, manganese, and zinc in plasma were observed among the dietary treatments. In the second experiment, relative liver weight was significantly reduced with the AM, DDGS, and WS diets and liver lipid by the AM diet. Plasma iron levels were significantly reduced by feeding all diets compared with the CS diet, but no significant differences in total iron binding capacity were observed. Plasma and hepatic ascorbic acid were significantly increased by the AM, DDGS, and WS diets, but no significant differences in hepatic ascorbic acid were observed when calculated per unit of fat-free dry matter.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The effects of feeding high levels of Mg to sheep on animal health, nutrient digestibility, metabolism of macro-minerals, blood and tissue mineral concentrations and hematological and histological tissue changes were evaluated. Six lambs were allotted to each of four diets supplemented with MgO to attain .2, .6, 1.2 or 2.4% Mg. Total fecal and urinary collections were made for the initial 20 d and last 10 d of a 50 d study. Diarrhea was noted in lambs fed the two highest Mg levels. Apparent digestibility of DM, ADF and CP decreased linearly (P less than .01) with increasing Mg levels. Dietary Mg levels did not affect (P greater than .05) rectal temperature, respiration rate or pulse rate. Apparent absorption and retention of Mg (g/d) were lowest in lambs fed 2.4% Mg until 15 d on trial, after which values increased linearly (P less than .01) with dietary Mg. Phosphorus absorption and retention decreased linearly (P less than .01) with increasing Mg levels. Increasing dietary Mg resulted in a linear increase (P less than .01) in serum Mg and variable increases (P less than .05) in erythrocyte Mg. Serum Ca was decreased linearly (P less than .05) and quadratically (P less than .05) by added Mg during the d 1 to 30 and 40 to 50 periods, respectively. Serum inorganic P was elevated consistently in lambs fed 2.4% Mg. A linear response to increasing dietary Mg (P less than .05) occurred in the Mg content of liver, kidney, rib bone and femur bone. In parallel studies with piglets of the country race the applicability of variously treated straw materials was tested in comparison with the conventional feeding of concentrate (I) after an early weaning date (30th-35th day of life) over a feeding period of 8 weeks (1st-8th week of keeping). In the rations containing 10% straw (concentrate-straw mixtures), untreated (II), HCl treated (III:HCl treatment without steaming) and partly hydrolyzed straw meal (IV:HCl treatment with subsequent steaming) were tested. In the 2nd and 8th weeks of keeping blood samples were taken from 4 animals of each group and selected parameters of the protein, fat, carbohydrate and mineral metabolism were subsequently ascertained from the blood serum. About half of the total of the 13 selected parameters showed reactions of the intermediary metabolism of the test groups caused by the feeding. With the parameters on the whole varying in the normal physiologic range, a decrease in the blood urea and creatinine concentration and an increase in the blood glucose level were detected after the use of the concentrate-straw mixtures (III and IV) in comparison with the sole feeding of concentrate (I) and partly also in comparison with untreated straw meal (II), their intensity varying in dependence on feeding and test duration. Particularly towards the end of the experiment, an increase of the activity of alkaline phosphatase was also characteristic, which was in negative correlation with the P content of the serum and in positive correlation with growth performance. The physiologic parameters are discussed in connection with the higher growth performance at reduced concentrate expenditure achieved in III and IV in comparison to I and II.

Four rumen-fistulated Holstein cows were used to determine the ability of vermiculite to alter rumen fermentation, rumen fluid dilution rate, milk production, and nutrient utilization in a 4 x 4 Latin square experiment. Treatments consisted of 1) basal diet (70% concentrate:30% Eragrostis curvula hay), 2) basal + .6% NaHCO3 + 1.8% vermiculite, 3) basal + 1.2% NaHCO3, and 4) basal + 3.6% vermiculite. Feed intake and milk production were not affected, but the NaHCO3 treatments tended to increase milk fat production. The 1.2% NaHCO3 treatment increased rumen pH and fluid dilution rate, decreased molar percent propionate, and increased acetate:propionate ratio. Rumen NH3 N was not affected. Milk yield (kg/d) and milk fat (%) for the treatments were 1) 19.3, 3.33; 2) 19.4, 3.59; 3) 19.8, 3.62; and 4) 18.7, 3.32. Rumen fluid pH, dilution rate (%/h), and acetate:propionate ratio were 1) 5.75, 10.9, 2.08; 2) 5.89, 11.5, 2.16; 3) 5.95, 12.1, 2.38; and 4) 5.80, 11.6 and 1.82. Treatments had little effect on nutrient digestibilities and serum mineral concentrations. Vermiculite did not show any promise as a buffer but NaHCO3 proved to be an effective buffer in diets based on Eragrostis hay and 70% concentrate diets.

The concentration of 19 mineral, electrolyte, and biochemical components in blood serum of 114 calves under feedlot conditions were measured or calculated over a 58-day period (2 days before and 56 days during a feed trail). The purpose was to evaluate the variability in the concentration of these components over time. The blood was collected on 7 sampling dates and analyzed on the day following sampling. Generally, the serum concentrations of the components that were measured varied considerably over the first 3 weeks of the feeding period and then had a tendency to level off during the 2nd part of that period.

Rations containing varied quotas of partly hydrolysed straw meal (PHS) were provided in mixtures of concentrate and straw meal, and selected parameters of the protein, fat, carbohydrate and mineral metabolism were registered in the blood serum at intervals (2nd and 8th week of keeping) in studies with weaned piglets of the country species. In a parallel experiment the straw hydrolysis product was provided without or after neutralization (with CaCO3) in quotas of 5, 10 and 15% in the mixed feed in comparison to the sole feeding of concentrate. Only some out of the total of 16 parameters ascertained in the blood serum showed reactions of the intermediary metabolism in the test groups caused by feeding. In general, straw crude fibre integration decreased the cholesterol level in the blood serum. Urea concentration in the blood decreased with the growing quota of PHS in the feed mixture. Deviations from the norm of various metabolites, which were mainly reflected in the period near weaning (2nd week of keeping) in an increased concentration of free glycerol and urea in the blood serum, could predominantly be registered after the sole feeding of concentrate. On the whole, there were thus certain interactions with growth performance, which clearly advocate the use of quotas of 10% of the hydrolysed straw product in the feed mixture.

Twenty fine-wool wether lambs were allotted randomly at weaning to be fed a conventional diet (CD) formulated for growing lambs, or the same basal mixture plus dried gamma-irradiated solids from primary sewage sludge (SS) incorporated as 7% of the dry matter. Feedlot performance and chemical elements in whole blood were monitored during 90 d, after which lambs were slaughtered and carcass data were collected. Concentrations of Ag, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb and Zn were measured in livers, kidneys, bones, spleens and muscles. Sewage solids in the diet did not affect performance appreciably, although dressing percentages from lambs fed SS were 4% lower than CD-fed animals (P less than .05). Rib eye areas, fat thicknesses, quality and yield grades were similar (P greater than .05). Element concentrations in whole blood at weaning, after 56 d of the feeding trial and at slaughter did not differ (P greater than .05) between dietary groups. Serum chemistry determinations showed no biologically meaningful patterns related to diets. Lambs fed SS had higher (P less than .05) concentrations of Cu in livers (51.1 vs 34.3 +/- 3.8 micrograms/g, mean +/- SE) and Pb in kidneys (4.0 vs 2.2 +/- .3 micrograms/g) and lower (P less than .05) Mg in kidneys (.69 vs .72 +/- .01 mg/g). None of the elements in spleen and muscle tissue differed (P greater than .05) between diet groups. Lambs fed SS had elevated (P less than .05) bone Co, Cu, Fe, K and Na compared with those of CD.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
