In response to the Bluetongue disease epidemic in 2006-2007, Germany started in 2008 a country-wide mandatory vaccination campaign. By 2009 the number of new outbreaks had decreased so that vaccination became voluntary in 2010. We conducted a questionnaire survey in cattle and sheep farms in three German federal states, namely North-Rhine Westphalia, Rhineland Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt to estimate the vaccination uptake in 2010, the intention to vaccinate in 2011 and the main determinants of refusal or acceptance to do so. The results showed that 42.8% (40.6-45.1) of the cattle farmers and 33.8% (31.8-35.8) of the sheep farmers had their animals vaccinated in 2010, whereas 40.7% (38.5-43.0) of cattle and 37.93% (35.8-40.1) sheep farmers expressed their intention to vaccinate in 2011. The main reasons mentioned for having animals vaccinated against BTV-8 were ability to export animals, prevention of production losses, subsidized vaccination, and recommendation by the veterinarian. Motives for refusing vaccination were presumed low risk of infection, costs, absence of clinical BT symptoms, presumed negative cost-benefit ratio, and negative experience with previous vaccination events (side effects). We assume that in order to increase farmers' motivation to have their animals immunized against BTV-8, (1) the vaccination needs to be subsidized, (2) combined vaccines with several different BT serotypes or even other diseases should be available and (3) farmers need to be better informed about the safety and benefit of vaccination., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this study was to identify limitations and incentives in reporting clinically suspect situations, possibly caused by classical swine fever (CSF), to veterinary authorities with the ultimate aim to facilitate early detection of CSF outbreaks. Focus group sessions were held with policy makers from the veterinary authorities, and representatives of veterinary practitioners and pig farmer unions. Personal interviews with a small group of pig farmers and practitioners were held to check limitations raised and solutions proposed during the focus group sessions. An electronic questionnaire was mailed to pig farmers and practitioners to investigate perceptions and attitudes with respect to clinically suspect situations possibly caused by CSF. After triangulating the responses of veterinary authorities, veterinary practitioners and farmers, six themes emerged across all groups: (1) lack of knowledge on the early signs of CSF; (2) guilt, shame and prejudice; (3) negative opinion on control measures; (4) dissatisfaction with post-reporting procedures; (5) lack of trust in government bodies; (6) uncertainty and lack of transparency of reporting procedures. The following solutions to facilitate early detection of CSF were put forward: (a) development of a clinical decision-support system for vets and farmers, in order to get faster diagnosis and detection of CSF; (b) possibility to submit blood samples directly to the reference laboratory to exclude CSF in a clinical situation with non-specific clinical signs, without isolation of the farm and free of charge for the individual farmer; (c) decrease social and economic consequences of reporting CSF, for example by improving the public opinion on first reports; (d) better schooling of veterinary officers to deal with emotions and insecurity of farmers in the process after reporting; (e) better communication of rules and regulations, where to report, what will happen next; (f) up-to-date website with information and visual material of the clinical signs of CSF., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier B.V. Outbreaks of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) occurred in spring 2006 in Germany close to the Dutch border. On 6th April Dutch pig farmers were given the possibility to submit blood samples directly via their veterinary practitioner to the National Reference Laboratory for CSF if their pigs had non-specific clinical symptoms or if pigs were being treated with antibiotics. The pig farm was not quarantined and was not visited by the veterinary authorities. Over a period of 9 weeks 156 pig farmers submitted whole blood samples via 50 different veterinary practices. All samples tested negative in the PCR test. These pig farmers and veterinary practitioners were asked to respond to a postal questionnaire with questions regarding their experience with this new diagnostic possibility, the distribution of the costs involved, a comparison with other instruments, such as official notification or use of a leukocyte count test, and their knowledge of clinical signs of CSF. 65 pig farmers (42%) and 33 veterinary practices (66%) returned the questionnaire. The main results indicated that pig farmers (72%) would use this type of exclusion diagnostics sooner than that they would approach the veterinary authorities (practitioners: 86%). Moreover the respondents considered the fact that the farm was not quarantined immediately to be an advantage (pig farmers, 79%; practitioners, 88%). 32 percent of the pig farmers were not aware that they were required to submit blood samples if pigs were being treated with antibiotics (practitioners: 11%). The majority of pig farmers and practitioners were not satisfied with the current distribution of the costs involved: in their opinion the costs of the PCR test, the costs of the veterinary practitioner and the costs for shipping the samples to the reference laboratory should be paid out of the Animal Health Fund (50% government and 50% industry) or by the government. If the current distribution of the costs is not changed, a large proportion of the pig farmers indicated that they would not use this form of exclusion diagnostics for CSF in the future. Pig farmers appeared to have a rather limited knowledge of the clinical signs of CSF: 33% of the pig farmers could mention maximally three clinical signs of CSF, and 7% could not mention a single clinical sign of CSF and said they were entirely dependent on the practitioners' ability to judge a CSF-suspect situation.

We describe the paratuberculosis management practices applied in dairy herds in the Netherlands. The findings from paratuberculosis seronegative and seropositive herds were compared to discover possible risk factors. In total, 370 randomly selected herds with > or =20 dairy cows were surveyed. A questionnaire was used to collect data on current and previous paratuberculosis management practices. All cattle aged > or =3 years were serologically tested for paratuberculosis using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Herds with >33 tested cattle, of which only one was seropositive, were excluded to reduce the risk of including false-positive herds in the analysis. A comparison of the management data of the seronegative herds (n = 166) and the seropositive herds (n = 143) showed that in both groups important management measures for the prevention of paratuberculosis, such as calving in a cleaned calving area, removing the calf immediately after birth, and feeding paratuberculosis non-suspect roughage to calves, were used only rarely. However, such measures should be regarded as the critical first step to control the disease and/or reduce its prevalence. Using univariable analysis, four factors were statistically different between seronegative and seropositive herds: herd size, cows with clinical signs of paratuberculosis, prompt selling of clinically diseased cattle and feeding milk replacer. Using a multivariable logistic regression model, only herd size was a significantly different factor. These results indicate that most of the paratuberculosis preventive management measures were executed on these Dutch dairy farms only to a limited extent.

The aim of the study was to test whether acidified drinking water, with two millilitres of an acid mixture per litre, was able to reduce the number of Salmonella infections in finishing pig herds. In each compartment, half of the pens were supplied with acidified water and the other pens served as negative control. In three herds the required dose was not applied to the pigs as a result of various practical problems. In another herd, all pigs remained seronegative throughout the study. Analysis of the remaining three herds showed a large and significant treatment effect in one herd (P<0.001). As a result of the small number of observations and the overall lower seroprevalence in the control groups, the other two herds only showed a statistical trend to a treatment effect (0.10

A national program to reduce Salmonella in pork and pork products should include monitoring and intervention at farm level. To develop an adequate intervention strategy at farm level, risk factors for Salmonella infections in finishing pigs have to be determined. In this study, blood samples were collected randomly at two slaughterhouses from slaughter pigs. Samples were tested by the Dutch Salmonella ELISA, based on the O-antigens 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 12, using a cut-off of OD%=10. This ELISA has been calibrated against the Danish ELISA to give comparable results. Workers from herds from which at least forty blood samples had been collected, were asked to participate in a questionnaire. In total, 353 questionnaires were obtained and analysed. Significant risk factors associated with the proportion of seropositive samples were identified by multiple linear logistic regression. The feeding of a complete liquid feed containing fermented by-products and the omission of disinfection after pressure washing a compartment as part of an all-in/all-out procedure, were both associated with a lower Salmonella seroprevalence. A small to moderate herd size (<800 finishing pigs), a previous diagnosis of clinical Salmonella infection in the herd, the use of tylosin as an antimicrobial growth promoter in finishing feed, or herds which had more than 16% of the livers of their pigs condemned at the slaughterhouse as a result of white spots were associated with a higher Salmonella seroprevalence. Hypothetical intervention strategies based on these risk factors can be studied for their effect on the Salmonella seroprevalence and practical applicability in field studies.

The central and regional organisation of the campaign to eradicate the CSF epidemic in The Netherlands in 1997/1998 is described. The main instruments used in the campaign were based on stamping-out and movement restrictions specified by the European Union. Additional instruments were used for the first time, namely, pre-emptive culling of contact and neighbouring farms, compartmentalisation of transport, monthly serological screening in established surveillance areas and supervised repopulation of all farms in the former surveillance zone. Two other measures, the killing of very young piglets and a breeding ban were introduced to reduce production in established surveillance zones. Several factors complicated the eradication campaign, for instance, the late detection of the first infection; artificial insemination as a source of infection; the organisation of pig farming in The Netherlands, with its highly concentrated production and dependence on the transport of stock from one unit to another; insufficient rendering capacity; decreasing sensitivity of clinical inspection; and extremely high costs.

Various new developments confront livestock production, in which certification, monitoring and surveillance of animal health are becoming major items. In that respect serum banks can be a helpful epidemiological tool to provide valid data for decisions on prevention and eradication of disease. History, aims and use of serum banks and storage and freezing conditions are discussed. A plea is made to create serum banks for different animal species in the Netherlands.

During an Integrated Quality Control (IQC) project for finishing pigs, the application of veterinary drugs was registered by means of a logbook on 75 pig finishing farms. Investigated is as to how far the application of veterinary drugs to animals is linked up with clinical observations, management and climatic conditions on the farm and to what extent the application of veterinary drugs is linked up with the occurrence of pathological findings in pigs at the slaughterhouse. The results indicate that more veterinary drugs are used as there are more clinical findings on a pig farm. This is particularly true for the autumn-winter period. Farms that use more veterinary drugs have a higher percentage of pigs with pathological findings at the slaughterhouse. As the point of time of treatment of respiratory disorders is closer to the slaughter date, there is a higher percentage of pigs suffering from pneumonia at the slaughterhouse. Farms treating pigs in the first thirty days of the finishing period against intestinal disorders have a distinct higher percentage of pigs suffering from pneumonia at the slaughterhouse. It appears that less veterinary drugs are used at farms having specific housing and management characteristics.

The relationship between the extent of seropositivity for Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV), Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App.) serotype 2 and porcine influenza (PI) viruses serotype H1N1 and H3N2 in pigs on the one hand and the health status of the pigs and some farm and management conditions in the herds on the other hand was studied in 45 pig finishing herds, all members of one integration group. The health status was assessed by the extent of clinical signs, the use of veterinary drugs and the prevalence of pathological lesions in pigs at slaughter. There was no relationship between the extent of seropositivity on the one hand and clinical signs and use of veterinary drugs on the other hand. However, there was a positive relationship between the extent of seropositivity and the percentage of pigs with lesions of the respiratory tract at slaughter. Furthermore, the study indicates that the variation in seropositivity between pigs herds is associated with management related factors that particularly influence the possibility of the spreading of viruses. A sero-epidemiological investigation in 14 pig herds with recurrent pneumonia problems revealed a high percentage of seropositive pigs per herd. Furthermore, in a large number of herds, pigs were simultaneously seropositive for ADV and App. serotype 2, for ADV and PI serotype H1N1 or for ADV and PI serotype H3N2.

Log book recording was done for twelve months on approximately 100 pig finishing farms in an Integrated Quality Control (IQC) project. This recording was designed to gain a better understanding of the extent and nature of the medication and vaccination on these farms. Vaccination against Aujeszky's disease was done on the majority of farms. This vaccination mainly consisted in a single, frequently intramuscular, injection. Vaccinations against swine influenza and infections due to Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae were merely sporadic. The animals were dewormed in 58 per cent of the finishing periods, whereas they were given preventive treatment for sarcoptic mange in 23 per cent of the finishing periods. Not a single pig was treated with antibiotics and/or chemotherapeutic agents in 12.5 per cent of the finishing periods. The majority of finishing periods in which treatment was not carried out, were those having closed pig herds. To the extent that the farms were supplied with piglets by more breeders, there were fewer finishing periods during which treatment was omitted. The great majority of cases in which individual therapy was given, were treated for respiratory disorders. On 27 per cent of the farms, more than 10 per cent of the animals per finishing period were treated for respiratory disorders. Group medication was much less frequent: intestinal disorders did not have to be treated on 31 per cent of the farms, and 16 per cent did not require treatment for respiratory disorders. In the great majority of cases in which group treatment was required, this was given during the first sixty days of the finishing period. In view of the fact that there are marked differences in the degree to which pigs have to be medicated on the farms, recording the use of veterinary drugs on farms, could fulfil the function of a signal. On the basis of these signals, measures may be suggested in herd management programmes to ensure an effective and minimum use of veterinary drugs. Using a log book will also enable the pig farmer to estimate whether groups of animals may be sent to the slaughter-house without involving risks to public health.
