1. Advanced Interface Design for IIIF. A Digital Tool to Explore Image Collections at Different Scales

Abstract

This article introduces a proposal for an experimental interface design that uses the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) to facilitate the exploration of image collections through the navigation of relational models created by the scholarly practice of annotation. Within the project From Data To Wisdom, an innovative digital tool was designed by harnessing IIIF resources and leveraging close and distant reading on three levels of detail: micro, meso, and macro. The proposed tool integrates annotation features that enable scholars to analyze individual images and interpret broader connections and patterns across image sets. This article outlines the experimental interface’s theoretical framework, design principles, and significant advantages, highlighting the potential to support interdisciplinary research and advancements in digital art.

Abstract

Il settimo centenario della morte di Dante (1321-2021) è stata una propizia occasione per rinnovare il rapporto con il Poeta, con la sua opera sempre complessa e sempre ricca di suggestioni, con gli ‘oggetti’ che la tramandano – dai manoscritti agli album d’artista, per rimanere in un ambito circoscritto. Ogni epoca ha avuto il proprio Dante, talora anche più di uno, e la contemporaneità non poteva sottrarsi a tale confronto/incontro. Per l’occasione, la Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana ha perciò curato una mostra online, Viaggiare con Dante (https://www.vaticanlibrary.va/it/viaggiare-con-dante.html), promossa dal Comitato scientifico-organizzativo dantesco del Pontificio Consiglio della Cultura e dal “Cortile dei Gentili”; in essa si espongono soprattutto manoscritti (commentati dalle annotazioni in IIIF), ma anche stampati, incisioni e medaglie, patrimonio dell’istituzione. Indagare una materia di così sfaccettata stratificazione attraverso tecnologie all’avanguardia ha comportato un mutamento del punto di osservazione, rivelando inedite possibilità di ricerca.

Abstract

The paper focuses on annotations jotted down by Vittorio Alfieri in the margins and endpapers of books related to language issues. A chronological path is sketched, from annotations dating from the first years of Alfieri’s « conversion » to literature, to annotations dating from is maturity. Special attention is paid to annotations dating from 1778-1779, where Alfieri carried on intensive studies of Italian language. Four type of annotation are described: lexical annotations; rationalisation of grammars and theorical texts; grammatical observations and ‘petulant’ annotations. Alfieri kept studying Italian language throughout his life: but the way he annotated books concerning language issues gradually changed over the time, as he achieved language proficiency.

Abstract

This is the editio princeps of the notes on the Aetna (a poem attributed to Virgil) that are contained in the codex Corsinianus 1839 (Rome, Biblioteca Corsiniana). These notes are from Pomponius Laetus’ school (XV century): many of them are similar or identical to those on the same poem that are transmitted by the codex London, British Library, Sloane 777, which is an autograph by Pomponius. These annotations are part of Pomponius’ exegesis on Virgil, a very importtant chapter of Virgil’s centuries-old exegesis.

L’articolo affronta le annotazioni depositate da Vittorio Alfieri nei margini e nelle carte di guardia di libri legati a questioni linguistiche. Si propone un percorso cronologico, dalle annotazioni dei primi anni della “conversione” alfieriana alla letteratura, fino alle postille della maturità. Particolare attenzione è rivolta alle annotazioni del periodo 1778-1779, in cui Alfieri condusse studi intensivi della lingua italiana. Quattro tipi di annotazione sono descritti: postille lessicali, razionalizzazione di grammatiche e testi teorici, osservazioni grammaticali e postille «petulanti». Alfieri continuò a studiare l’italiano lungo tutto l’arco della sua vita: ma il modo in cui annotava i testi di lingua è cambiato nel tempo parallelamente al raggiungimento della piena competenza linguistica. Abstract

International audience; SPPAS is a tool to automatically produce annotations which includes utterance, word, syllabic and phonemic segmentation from a recorded speech sound and its transcription. This paper describes the participation of SPPAS in evaluations related to the “Forced Alignment on Children Speech” task of Evalita 2014. SPPAS is a ”user-friendly” software mainly dedicated to Linguists and open source.; SPPAS è uno strumento in grado di produrre automaticamente annotazioni a livello di parola, sillaba e fonema a partire da una forma d'onda e dalla sua corrispondente trascrizione ortografica. Questo articolo descrive la partecipazione di SPPAS nelle valutazioni relative al task Forced Alignment on Children Speech (allineamento forzato su parlato infantile) di Evalita 2014. SPPAS è un software ”open source”, è molto semplice da utilizzare ed è particolarmente indicato all'uso da parte di linguisti.
