In the genre designated "travel literature", which reflects the impressions that our country and its people raised in foreign visitors, the book by French naturalist Pierre Marie Arthur Morelet, Voyage dans L'Amerique Centrale, L'ile de Cuba et le Yucatan (Paris, 1857), certainly occupies a place of honor given the quality of his landscape descriptions, the sharpness of his observations on the socioeconomic situation of Southern Mexico, his significant reflections on culture (rooted in his encyclopedic training) and the excellence of his pen. This article is an invitation to read his work, in the light of its recent full publication in Spanish.

Une réalité qu’elle compose entre textes anciens, codex, études archéologiques et qui montre une vision nourrie de la culture maya où l’arbre de vie, pour le bien de la collectivité, prend ses racines dans le sacrifice de l’être humain.

The article deals with the royal dynasty of Machaquilá (Petén, Guatemala), focusing on two main aspects: On one side, the political history of the dynasty, reconstructed from the available hieroglyphic texts; on the other, the rituals that took place at Plaza A, where the well-known quatrifoil was found, which represent an exceptional expression of the ceremonial activities of the ruling elite. El trabajo se centra en la dinastía real de Machaquilá (Petén, Guatemala), enfocándose en dos aspectos principales: por un lado, la historia política de la dinastía, reconstruida a partir de los textos jeroglíficos disponibles; por otro, los rituales realizados en la Plaza A, donde se encuentra el conocido recinto cuadrilobulado, y que constituyen un testimonio excepcional de las actividades ceremoniales vinculada a la élite gobernante.

Structure 99, located on top of a large platform occupies a major and prominent part of the North Group complex of the Maya site of Nakum situated in the north-eastern area of Guatemala. Archaeological excavations realized in this structure during a few field seasons have revealed interesting data about the very last moment of Nakum’s development during the Terminal Classic period (AD 800-900/950). It also revealed important traces of architectural and ritual activities from the still enigmatic Protoclassic phase ( ca . 100 BC-AD 300). Scattered ceramics, stone tools and human bones found on top of Structure 99 — associated with the final hours of its occupation as well as Protoclassic offerings discovered in the lowest layers of this construction, including intriguing clay heads and jade pendants — are evidence of important ceremonial activities and beliefs that everything in the world is alive. By caching or destroying artifacts within the building, it is symbolically animated or killed by the Maya. This paper presents the results of the most important research conducted in Structure 99 that contributes to our knowledge on the ritual and architectural activities of two crucial periods in the history of Nakum: the Protoclassic and Terminal Classic. Among numerous findings described in this article, there is one that merits special attention. It is a cylindrical ceramic artifact lately identified as a beehive, providing a new perspective on beekeeping by the ancient Maya. The artifact is dated to the Protoclassic phase and is one of the oldest beehives discovered in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.

Las investigaciones que hemos desarrollado acerca de la historia de las colecciones yucatecas que forman parte del Museo Americano de Historia Natural de Nueva York nos permiten trazar un perfil general de los intereses intelectuales y de algunas de las primeras exploraciones emprendidas en la región. La información asociada a las piezas arqueológicas que actualmente se resguardan en dicho museo nos remite a los trabajos precursores llevados a cabo por reconocidos viajeros como Charnay, Stephens, Le Plongeon o Maler, y también de otros menos conocidos, como los coleccionistas locales. En conjunto, estos protoarqueólogos enfocaron sus esfuerzos a construir el conocimiento de la antigua civilización maya a través de sus evidencias materiales.Our research on the history of Yucatec collections that are now in the American Museum of Natural History in New York allows us to outline a general profile of the intellectual interests and some of the first explorations in the region. The information associated with the archaeological objects that are today held in this museum speak of the early archaeological work carried out by well known explorers such as Charnay, Stephens, Le Plongeon or Maler, and also by lesser-known players such as the local collectors. Together, these proto-archaeologists focused their efforts on constructing knowledge of the ancient Maya civilization through material evidence.

Las recientes excavaciones realizadas en 20 pozos estratigráficos practicados dentro de un área de 9 km2 alrededor de los grupos principales del asentamiento prehispánico de Oxpemul, en la región del Petén, han revelado importante información respecto a la ocupación del mismo, y evidencian una secuencia cronológica que va del periodo Preclásico Medio al Clásico Tardío. El estudio de dichos materiales proporcionará elementos que permitirán su comparación con otros procedentes de sitios de las regiones de Río Bec y del Petén.

The article presents the overall approach and results of the recent archaeological work in the Maya city of Machaquilá (Petén, Guatemala). The excavated plazas –in the central sector– and groups –in the residential area– are analyzed emphasizing on the characteristics of structures, the construction sequences, the chronology and the predominant role of each unit. El artículo presenta el planteamiento y los resultados generales de los trabajos arqueológicos recientes en la ciudad maya de Machaquilá (Petén, Guatemala). Se analizan las plazas –en el sector central– y los grupos –en el área habitacional– excavados, poniendo el énfasis en las características de las estructuras, las secuencias constructivas, la cronología y la función predominante de cada uno de esos conjuntos.

En este trabajo hacemos una revisión, sistematización y análisis de los estudios que se han realizado sobre los rituales de hetzmek en Yucatán, para que sirva como punto de partida a investigaciones etnográficas posteriores sobre las celebraciones actuales. Nos interesa conocer cómo han sido analizados e interpretados dichos rituales. Para ello, nos centramos en los siguientes aspectos: a) las presunciones que se han hecho sobre su origen, b) las problemáticas o temáticas teóricas dentro de las cuales se ha abordado, c) las funciones y los propósitos que los estudiosos le asignan y d) la manera en que realizan sus interpretaciones. Previamente, para que el lector conozca en qué consiste este ritual, presentamos una descripción basada en los rasgos más comunes e ideales. Finalmente, hacemos algunas reflexiones y recomendaciones metodológicas para futuros análisis de este ritual.

Los mayas han vivido desde siempre en un mundo sacralizado, opuesto al mundo profano. Los mayas buscan lo subjetivo, el misterio de las cosas, lo que no se ve pero que es lo real, es lo simbólico. Todas sus relaciones con la naturaleza, trabajo, sexualidad tienen un sentido sagrado, incluso el hecho de alimentarse no es una cuestión puramente orgánica o "natural" sino sacra. Así, existían entre ellos alimentos y bebidas que son objetos simbólicos, sobre todo los relacionados con sus ceremonias. El balché, "vino sagrado" producto de la corteza de un árbol, y el saká, "pozol sagrado"; árbol y maíz, plantas sagradas, significan vida y fertilidad, eran y son utilizadas aún hoy en día en las ceremonias como ofrendas para pedir ayuda y dar gracias al Dios Chaak por la lluvia en la milpa y la protección de los animales., The Mayan have always lived in a sacred world, opposed to the profane world. ResumenEste artículo desarrolla tres temas: el primero es la militancia política de Alberto Ruz contra los gobiernos cubanos títeres apoyados por los Estados Unidos, el segundo son sus aportaciones a la arqueología científica mexicana, que fueron más allá del magno descubrimiento de la tumba de K’inich Janaab’ Pakal de Palenque, y el tercero, su defensa del patrimonio arqueológico nacional.El segundo, más ampliamente desarrollado, aborda tanto las ideas capitales que guiaron su trabajo académico, como el marco teórico-metodológico que aplicó. Asimismo se describen las polémicas en las que participó, dejando fuera sus excavaciones en Palenque. En la última parte del artículo se relata lo concerniente a sus luchas por proteger y dar nueva vida y vigencia al patrimonio arqueológico maya.AbstractThis article is about Alberto Ruz, the archaeologistwho made the remarkable discovery of the tomb of K’inich Janaab’ Pakal of Palenque, however it is not about his archaeological discoveries. Instead the article has three themes: the first is Alberto Ruz's political activism against the US puppet governments of Cuba; the second is his contributions to the science of Mexican archaeology; and the third is about his defense of Mexico's archaeological heritage.More specifically, the themes are explored and developed by detailing Ruz's most important ideas that guided his academic work. We outline the theoretical and methodological frameworks he applied and the political struggles in which he participated. We also describe his courageous efforts to protect and to give new life and strength to Maya archaeological heritage.

ResumenLos mayas conciben la cacería como una práctica integrada al resto de las actividades dentro de su sistema productivo. En el presente estudio resaltamos el uso que hacen de la agricultura de roza-tumba-quema para cazar. Se describe y delimita la que hemos denominado como “milpa comedero-trampa”: práctica de manejo del hábitat donde la siembra de cultivos agrícolas interesa exclusivamente para atraer y cazar determinadas especies de vertebrados terrestres, no para obtener cosechas para autoconsumo. Se caracterizan los componentes técnicos y la organización social involucrada que identifican a esta variante o subsistema de milpa, como su reducido tamaño (entre 1-3 mecates), la ausencia de la fase de quema o que ésta es microlocalizada, que el maíz (Zea mays) no es el cultivo primordial, o que la milpa es de carácter enteramente individual, entre otros. En una milpa comedero-trampa, la agricultura y la cacería constituyen un nexo tecnológico para obtener presas en un espacio muy especializado dentro del territorio (que no es la típica ix kool o, como la llamaremos aquí, milpa convencional).AbstractThe Maya conceive hunting as an integrated activity within their productive system. In this study, we draw attention to the use of slash-and-burn agriculture to capture wild fauna. The milpa comedero-trampa (the “milpa trough-trap”), as we have named it, is described and delimited as a habitat management practice in which cultivating is only done to enable hunting, and not to obtain cultivated products. The technical components and social organization involved in this variant or subsystem of the milpa are characterized, including its reduced size (1-3 mecates), the absence of burning or its restriction, the secondary role of Zea mays, or their individual nature. In a milpa comedero-trampa agriculture and hunting form a technological link to obtain prey in a specialized space (different from the conventional ix kool or milpa convencional, as it is referred to here).
