A wide range of active agents, synthetic and natural agents such as essential oils, chitosan and polyphneols consisting of curcumin, gallic acid, anthocyanins, and catechins have been used in order to develop antimicrobial packaging systems, and among them, natural polyphenolic compounds, specially curcumin (Cur) has great potential due to effective biological activities in developing food packaging material. Quercetin (Quer) is also the mostly studied flavonol as a color-changing indicator in the food industry and has been already developed as a realistic alternative for smart and active food packaging. The reason for choosing these two polyphenolic compounds is that they simultaneously possess many beneficial properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antitumoral, and anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, the main objective of the study is to combine polypropylene (PP), which is the most preferred and cost-effective polymer in the packaging industry, with these active ingredients, rather than using more expensive polymer types. In this context, PP-Quer or PP-Cur membranes, which are new experiences based on these literatures were chemically characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the surface morphology of these composite membranes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The antibacterial response against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria species was investigated. Furthermore, the reactive oxygen species generation and anticancer activity of these composite membranes using human colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT-29) were observed. Nosocominal infections associated with biofilm formation on urinary catheters cause serious complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of the polyurethane (PU) catheter modified with tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) attached Ag nanoparticles embedded PolyRicinoleic acid-Polystyrene Nanoparticles (PU-TCH-AgNPs-PRici-PS NPs) and the influence on antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of urinary catheters infected by Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . For this purpose, AgNPs embedded PRici graft PS graft copolymers (AgNPs-PRici-g-PS) were synthesized via free radical polymerization and characterized by FTIR, HNMR and DSC. AgNPs-PRici-PS NPs were prepared and optimized by the different parameters and the optimized size of nanoparticle was found as about 150 ± 1 nm. The characterization of the nanoparticles and the morphological evaluation were carried out by FTIR and SEM. Short term stability of nanoparticles was realised at 4°C for 30 days. In vitro release profiles of TCH and Ag NPs were also investigated. The formation of biofilm on PU modified TCH-Ag NPs-PRici-PS NPs, was evaluated and the biocompatibility test of the nanoparticles was realized via the mouse fibroblast (L929) and mouse urinary bladder cells (G/G An1). This is the first time that TCH-AgNPs-PRici-PS NPs used in the modification of PU catheter demonstrated high antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against the urinary tract infection.

Autoxidation of poly unsaturated fatty acids makes negative effect on foods. In this work, this negative effect was turned to a great advantage using autoxidized soybean oil as a macroperoxide nanocomposite initiator containing silver nano particles in free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers. The synthesis of soybean oil macro peroxide was carried out by exposing soybean oil to air oxygen with the presence of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) at room temperature. Autoxidized soybean oil macroperoxide containing silver nanoparticles (Agsbox) successfully initiated the free radical polymerization of styrene in order to obtain Polystyrene (PS)-g-soybean oil graft copolymer containing Ag NPs. Both autoxidized soybean oil and PS-g-sbox with Ag NPs showed a surface plasmon resonance and high fluorescence emission. Overall rate constant (K) of styrene polymerization initiated by autoxidized soybean oil macroperoxide with Ag NPs was found to be K=1.95.10 -4 Lmol -1 s -1 at 95°C. Antibacterial efficiency was observed in the PS-g-soybean oil graft copolymer film samples containing Ag NPs. 1 H NMR and GPC techniques were used for the structural analysis of the fractionated polymeric oils., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Study Design: Antimicrobial effect of a novel silver-impregnated pedicle screw in rabbits., Objective: A novel spine implant model was designed to study the antimicrobial effect of a modified Titanium (Ti) pedicle screws with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in multiple surgical sites in the lumbar spine of a rabbit., Summary of Background Data: Infection in spinal implant is of great concern. Anti-infection strategies must be tested in relevant animal models that will lead to appropriate clinical studies., Methods: Fourteen New Zealand white rabbits were divided into 2 groups: group 1: infected unmodified Ti screw group (n =  6), and group 2: infected polyethylene glycol grafted, polypropylene-based silver nanoparticle (PP-g-PEG-Ag) covered Ti screw group (n = 6), and 2 rabbits as sterile (sham-operated and control) group. In all groups, left L4-right L6 vertebra levels were exposed and screws were drilled to transverse processes after contamination of burr holes and surrounding tissue with 0.1 mL of 10 colony forming units (CFU) MRSA solutions in groups 1 and 2. After 21 days, samples were collected and infection was analyzed via light and scanning electron microscopy and culturing. Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NP) on the screws and tissues were assayed pre and postoperatively., Results: The bacterial colony count for modified-Ti screw group was lower than for unmodified Ti screw (17.2 versus 200 x 10(3) CFU/mL, P = 0.029) with less biofilm formation. There was no difference in duration of surgery among groups and within the surgical sites. Ag-NPs were detected on the screw surface postoperatively., Conclusion: This novel experimental design of implantation in rabbits is easy to apply and resembles human stabilization technique. Modified Ti screws were shown to have antimicrobial effect especially inhibiting the biofilm formation. This anchored Ag NPs that remained after 21st day of implantation shows that it is resistant to tapping forces of the screw.

A new type of amphiphilic antibacterial elastomer has been described. Thermoplastic elastomer, polystyrene-block-polyisoprene-block-polystyrene (PS-b-PI-b-PS) triblock copolymer was functionalized in toluene solution by free radical mercaptan addition in order to obtain an amphiphilic antibacterial elastomer. Thiol terminated PEG was grafted through the double bonds of PS-b-PI-b-PS via free radical thiol-ene coupling reaction. The antibacterial properties of the amphiphilic graft copolymers were observed. The original and the modified polymers were used to create microfibers in an electro-spinning process. Topology of the electrospun micro/nanofibers were studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
