We report a facile, green and precursor-based comparative study on the biosynthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) using anticancerous Fagonia indica as effective chelating agent. Biosynthesis was carried out using zinc sulfate and zinc acetate as precursor salts to make ZnOS and ZnOA NPs under similar experimental conditions which were characterized extensively for physical and biological properties. Scherrer equation deduced a mean crystallite size of ~23.4 nm for ZnOA NPs and ~41 nm for ZnOS NPs. The nature of the NPs was compared using UV, diffuse reflectance spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis-DTA, selected area electron diffraction, EDS, zeta potential, high resolution (HR)-SEM, and HR-TEM. Detailed in vitro pharmacognostic activities revealed a significant therapeutic potential for ZnOA and ZnOS. Potential antimicrobial activities for the NPs and their nanocosmeceutical formulations are reported. ZnOA NPs were more cytotoxic to Leishmania tropica as compared to ZnOS. Significant antioxidant and protein kinase inhibition was obtained. The hemolytic assay indicated a hemocompatible nature of both ZnOA and ZnOS NPs. Catalytic degradation of crystal violet dye (CVD) by NPs was examined under different parameters (light, dark, UV). Furthermore, sonophotocatalytic degradation of CVD was also studied. Our results suggested that precursor can have a significant effect on the physical, biological, and catalytic properties of the NPs. Aim: The biosynthesis of chromium oxide nanoparticles (Cr2O3 NPs), using Hyphaene thebaica as a bioreductant, for assessment of their potential nanomedicinal applications. Materials & methods: Biosynthesized Cr2O3 NPs were characterized by x-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, UV–Vis spectroscopy and ζ-potential measurement. In vitro assays were used to assess the biological properties of Cr2O3 NPs. Results: Nanoparticles with size approximately 25–38 nm were obtained with a characteristic Cr–O vibration at 417 cm-1. A broad spectrum antimicrobial potential and antioxidant nature is reported. Slight inhibition of polio virus and biocompatibility at low doses was observed. Green and ecofriendly route for biosynthesis of lead oxide nanoparticles has been successfully demonstrated using aqueous leaf extracts of Sageretia thea (Osbeck.). Biosynthesized PbO (∼27 nm) nanoparticles were extensively characterized using XRD, FTIR, Raman, EDS etc. Morphology was studied through HR-TEM/SEM. As synthesized nanoparticles were investigated for their iv-vitro biological properties. Antibacterial activities revealed enhancement upon modulation by UV in a concentration dependent manner. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be the most resistant strain (MIC = 250 µg/mL and MICuv = 31.25 µg/ml). MTT cytotoxicity on leishmania promastigotes and amastigotes revealed significant inhibition as indicated by their IC 50 values of 14.7 µg/mL and 11.95 µg/m respectively. Cytotoxicity was also confirmed using brine shrimp lethality (IC 50 = 27.7 µg/mL). Bio-compatibility evaluation indicated cytotoxicity to freshly isolated human macrophages (IC 50 = 57.1 µg/mL). Insignificant alpha-amylase inhibition and moderate protein kinase inhibition was revealed. Antioxidant activities indicated free radical scavenging activity (58 ± 2.45) at 200 µg/mL. Moderate total reducing power and total antioxidant activity was also indicated. Overall, we conclude lead oxide as a potential candidate for biological applications, however further studies are recommended on their in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cobalt oxide nanoparticles were successfully biosynthesized by complete green process using aqueous leaf extracts of Sageretia thea as chelating agent. Diverse techniques were applied for characterization. Antibacterial (with and without UV illumination), antileishmanial, antioxidant and enzyme inhibition applications were assessed, while freshly isolated macrophages and red blood cells were used for biocompatibility studies. Good antibacterial nature and enhancement of bactericidal nature upon UV modulation is reported. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are indicated as most susceptible bacterial strains. Significant cytotoxic potential is revealed with IC 50 calculated as 12.82 µg/ml and 3.16 µg/ml against the axenic leishmanial promastigote and amastigote cultures respectively. Biogenic cobalt oxide nanoparticles indicated DPPH free radical scavenging potential, while moderate antioxidant capacity and reducing power was demonstrated. Bioinspired cobalt oxide also demonstrated alpha amylase and protein kinase inhibition at higher concentrations. Biogenic cobalt oxide was found as more cytotoxic to macrophages (IC 50 = 58.55 µg/ml) then to RBC's (IC 50 >200 µg/ml). Our results indicate green synthesis as an alternative, effective and eco-friendly method for the biosynthesis of cobalt oxide nanoparticles with numerous biological applications. Aim: To investigate the physical and biological properties of Silybum marianum inspired ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), Ag–ZnO heterostructures. Experiment: Nanoparticles were characterized using ultraviolet–visible and infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, high resolution electron microscopy, ζ potential and thermo-gravimetric analysis etc. Results: Ag–ZnO–NPs indicated slightly higher antimicrobial potential then ZnO–NPs. Good antileishmanial (IC50 = 246 μg/ml for Ag–ZnO; 341 μg/ml for ZnO) and antioxidant potential while moderate enzyme inhibition is reported. 2, 2-Diphenyl 1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging of Ag–ZnO was higher relative to ZnO–NPs. Nanocosmaceutical formulation of nanoparticles indicated stable antimicrobial performance. This contribution reports the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous leaf extracts of D. mucronata and their diverse applications. Synthesized AgNPs were characterized using diverse techniques, i.e. UV, XRD, EDS, SEM, TEM, FTIR and TGA/DTA. These techniques confirmed the authenticity of the synthesized nanoparticles. The bimodulated AgNPs revealed the highest radical scavenging potential, i.e. 86.4% relative to plant extract at 600 μg/ml. Escherichia coli was found to be the most susceptible strain to AgNPs. Growth of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was also inhibited. Hemolytic activity revealed negligible hemolysis, indicating the biocompatible nature of biomodulated AgNPs. Furthermore, no mutagenic properties were shown by the biogenic AgNPs. Synthesized nanoparticles possessed promising insecticidal potential and had no phytotoxic activity. NiO nanoparticles are biosynthesized using Sageretia thea (Osbeck.) aqueous leave extracts and their biological activities are reported. Nanoparticles (∼18 nm) were characterized through XRD, ATR-FTIR, EDS, SAED, HR-SEM/TEM and Raman spectroscopy. Antibacterial activity was investigated against six pathogenic bacterial strains (gram positive and gram negative) and their corresponding minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were calculated. UV-exposed nanoparticles were investigated to have reduced MICs relative to the NiO nanoparticles have not been exposed to UV. Moderate linear fungal growth inhibition was observed while Mucor racemosus (percentage inhibition 64% ± 2.30) was found to be most susceptible. Cytotoxicity was confirmed using brine shrimps lethality assay (IC50 42.60 μg/ml). MTT cytotoxicity was performed against Leishmania tropica-KWH23 promastigotes and amastigotes revealed significant percentage inhibition across the applied concentrations. IC50 values were calculated as 24.13 μg/ml and 26.74 μg/ml for the promastigote and amastigote cultures of Leishmania tropica. NiO nanoparticles were found. Sageretia thea(Osbeck.) was used as an effective chelating agent for the biosynthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP's) and extensively characterized through XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, HR-SEM/TEM and SAED. Antibacterial assays against five human pathogenic bacterial strains were carried out and minimum inhibitory concentrations were calculated.Pseudomonas aeruginosa(MIC: 7.4 µg/mL) was the most susceptible strain to biosynthesized IONPs. All of the fungal strains showed susceptibility to the IONPs. MTT cytotoxic assay was carried out against the promastigote and amastigote cultures ofLeishmania tropicaand their IC50 values were calculated as 17.2 and 16.75 µg/mL. The cytotoxic potential was further assessed using brine shrimps, and the IC50 was calculated as 16.46 µg/mL. Moderate antioxidant activities were reported. Maghemite (Fe 2 O 3 -NPs) nanoparticles were synthesized by a convenient, green and cost effective method using aqueous fruit extracts of Hyphaene thebaica. Different techniques like FTIR, XRD, UV–Vis, Raman, HR-TEM, EDS. SAED, Zeta potential were used to establish the nature of Fe 2 O 3 -NPs, while the therapeutic properties were studied using different biological assays including antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and enzyme inhibition assays. XRD pattern revealed sharp peaks and a crystalline nature of Fe 2 O 3 -NPs. HR-TEM revealed quasi-spherical and cuboidal morphologies, while the particle size in ~10 nm. FTIR indicated a sharp peak centered at ~444 cm−1 which is the characteristic Fe O band vibration. SAED pattern indicated the crystalline nature while EDS also confirmed the synthesis of Fe 2 O 3 NPs. Zeta potential was obtained in different solvents and physiological buffers indicating highest value in water (−26.5 mV) and lowest in DMSO (−15.8 mV). Tested bacterial strains, Bacillus subtilis was found to be inhibited significantly. Aspergillus flavus appeared to be susceptible to all of the tested concentration of Fe 2 O 3 NPs. Maximum 40.78% FRSA was obtained at 400 μg/mL. Cell culture based studies on RD cells and L20B cells indicated reduction in viability of cells with increase concentration of Fe 2 O 3 NPs. Moderate inhibition of polio virus-1 and polio virus-2 was observed, after culturing the virus in the L20B cells. Excellent Protein Kinase (PK) inhibition was revealed. Hemolytic potential and cytotoxic potential was indicated to be dose dependent.
