Dietary astaxanthin supplementation has been demonstrated to have many beneficial and health-promoting effects. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the effect of astaxanthin supplementation on fatigue, cognition, and exercise efficiency. A total of 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 346 healthy participants were included. The random effects model and pooled standardized mean difference (SMDs) were used according to Hedge's g for the meta-analysis, and a meta-regression was also conducted. The results of the two existing studies showed a positive trend for astaxanthin in subjective fatigue relief. The effects of astaxanthin supplementation for 8–12 weeks on cognitive accuracy were marginally significant (SMD:.12; 95% CI: −.02–.26) and on reaction time was not significant (SMD: −.08; 95% CI: −.26 to.10). Remarkably, astaxanthin supplementation combined with regular training could enhance the fat oxidation (SMD: 2.56; 95% CI: 1.24–3.89), and significantly improve the physical performance (SMD:.62; 95% CI:.17–1.06). The subgroup analysis further showed significantly greater benefits when performing the aerobic exercises performance (SMD:.45; 95% CI:.13–.76), when the dose was ≥ 20 mg (SMD:.37; 95% CI:.11–.63), and when the supplementation duration was > 12 weeks (SMD:.66; 95% CI:.13–.63). We conclude that astaxanthin supplementation could significantly enhance aerobic exercise efficiency, especially at higher doses and for longer durations. The present study aims to evaluate nutrient retention in mango, avocado, and tomato dried using freezing, refractance windows, and oven methods. The quality parameters of the dried products were assessed, such as color, water activity, and antioxidant content. Greater color retention was observed for freeze-dried products than for products dried using other methods. All products showed low water activity (>0.4), which prevented microbial growth. Freeze-dried products had the highest content of lycopene and carotenoids. Instead, more flavonoids and phenolics were detected in the refractance window method and then in the oven-dried products. Although freeze-dried products are preferred, the refractance windows method could be a promising drying technology because of its energy savings, easy operations, and low cost. Objective The aim of the study is to investigate the therapeutic effects of astaxanthin (AST) and resveratrol (RVT) on multiorgan damage in an animal model of the supraceliac aortic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). Methods In this study, 28 rats (n = 7/group), 200 to 250 g in weight, were randomized to four groups (1: Sham, 2: Control + I/R, 3: AST + I/R, and 4: RVT + I/R). Following the abdominal incision, aortic dissection was performed in the sham group without injury. Other groups underwent I/R injury via supraceliac aortic clamping (20 minutes) and reperfusion. The rats were administered olive oil (3 mL/kg) orally for 2 weeks before and 1 week after the laparotomy. Additionally, oral AST (10 mg/kg) or RVT (50 mg/kg) was given to the study groups. All rats were sacrificed on the 3rd week of the experiment after blood samples were taken for analysis. Multiple rat tissues were removed. Results We found that RVT increased total antioxidant status (TAS) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, and decreased total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, while AST increased the levels of TAS, decreased TNF-α, MDA, TOS, and OSI (p <0.05). Pathological investigations of the rat tissues revealed that both AST and RVT ameliorated tissue damage and apoptosis. Conclusion Our study suggests that AST and RVT might show therapeutic effects against oxidative tissue damage and apoptosis in an animal model of aortic I/R. Further studies are required. The current emphasis within the cosmetic market on sustainable ingredients has heightened the exploration of new sources for natural, active components. Actinomycetota, recognized for producing pigments with bioactive potential, offer promising functional cosmetic ingredients. This study aimed to optimize pigment and antioxidant metabolite production from the Gordonia hongkongensis strain EUFUS-Z928 by implementing the Plackett-Burman experimental design and response surface methodology. Extracts derived from this strain exhibited no cytotoxic activity against human primary dermal fibroblast (HDFa, ATCC® PCS-201-012™, Primary Dermal Fibroblast; Normal, Human, Adult). Eight variables, including inoculum concentration, carbon and nitrogen source concentration, NaCl concentration, pH, incubation time, temperature, and stirring speed, were analyzed using the Plackett-Burman experimental design. Subsequently, factors significantly influencing pigment and antioxidant metabolite production, such as temperature, inoculum concentration, and agitation speed, were further optimized using response surface methodology and BoxBehnken design. The results demonstrated a substantial increase in absorbance (from 0.091 to 0.32), DPPH radical scavenging capacity (from 27.60% to 84.61%), and ABTS radical scavenging capacity (from 17.39% to 79.77%) compared to responses obtained in the isolation medium. The validation of the mathematical model accuracy exceeded 90% for all cases. Furthermore, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) facilitated the identification of compounds potentially responsible for enhanced pigment production and antioxidant capacity in extracts derived from G. hongkongensis. Specifically, six carotenoids, red-orange pigments with inherent antioxidant capacity, were identified as the main enhanced compounds. This comprehensive approach effectively optimized the culture conditions and medium of a G. hongkongensis strain, resulting in enhanced carotenoid production and antioxidant capacity. Beyond identifying bioactive compounds and their potential cosmetic applications, this study offers insights into the broader industrial applicability of these extracts. Tomatoes are low in calories, however, they provide the precious content of vitamins, minerals, organic acids, carbohydrates, and, especially, carotenoids (β-carotene and lycopene), as essential requirements for the normal functioning of the human body. The latest study aimed to quantify the various compounds that exhibit antioxidant activities in different tomato cultivars. Tomato landraces with the supreme content of individual chemicals and complex of varied traits can serve as genetic sources in breeding for obtaining the tomato genotypes with the highest content of carotenoids, ascorbic acid, phenols, dry matter, and soluble sugars. Comparative analysis of tomato cultivars showed that to obtain genetic material with an enhanced content of secondary metabolites, the following tomato cultivars are recommendable for the desired hybridization to make possible cross combinations, i.e., Black Jack, Shirley, Bosare blue, and Christmas Blueberry and can suggest more precisely for high carotenoids content. Background: Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) have the ability to self-renew and proliferate which gives them healing properties in various tissues. Aluminium chloride (AlCl3) is a chemical compound with harmful effects on health; oxidative stress caused by Aluminium has been reported previously. Crocin, a major component of Crocus sa-tivus (saffron), has antioxidant properties and has shown therapeutic potential. Researchers have been looking for ways to reduce the harmful effects of AlCl3. Methods: To investigate whether crocin can reduce AlCl3 cytotoxicity, rat Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BM-MSCs) were isolated, cultured and divided into four experimental groups. The first group was the control, which was untreated cells. The second and third groups were treated with crocin (50, 100, 250, 500 µM) and AlCl3 (20, 25, 30 mM) for 24 hr. The fourth group was pre-treated with crocin (250, 500 µM) for 24 hr and then treated with AlCl3 (20 mM) overnight. Cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT assay. Mineralization was evaluated by alizarin red staining. Sox-2 and E-cadherin expression were measured using real-time PCR. Results: The results showed that AlCl3 caused cytotoxicity on BM-MSCs and decreased the mRNA expression of Sox-2 and E-cadherin, which are important for the maintenance of self-renewal and proliferation of BM-MSCs. In contrast, crocin protected the self-renewal characteristic of BM-MSCs by increasing Sox-2 expression and also preserved the proliferative effects on BM-MSCs by upregulating E-cadherin expression (***p≤0.001). Conclusion: Overall, the study suggests that crocin can protect BM-MSCs from AlCl3-induced cytotoxicity by upregulate Sox-2 expression and E-cadherin expression. Pigmented corn is a gramineae food of great biological, cultural and nutritional importance for many Latin American countries, with more than 250 breeds on the American continent. It confers a large number of health benefits due to its diverse and abundant bioactive compounds. In this narrative review we decided to organize the information on the nutrients, bioactive compounds and phytochemicals present in pigmented corn, as well as their effects on human health. Phenolic compounds and anthocyanins are some of the most studied and representative compounds in these grasses, with a wide range of health properties, mainly the reduction of pro-oxidant molecules. Carotenoids are a group of molecules belonging to the terpenic compounds, present in a large number of pigmented corn breeds, mainly the yellow ones, whose biological activity incorporates a wide spectrum. Bioactive peptides can be found in abundance in corn, having very diverse biological effects that include analgesic, opioid and antihypertensive activities. Other compounds with biological activity found in pigmented corn are resistant starches, some fatty acids, phytosterols, policosanols, phospholipids, ferulic acid and phlobaphenes, as well as a great variety of vitamins, elements and fibers. This review aims to disseminate and integrate the existing knowledge on compounds with biological activity in pigmented corn in order to promote their research, interest and use by scientists, nutrition professionals, physicians, industries and the general population. Prunus avium L. and Prunus spinosa L. are valuable fruit-bearing trees known for their bioactive compounds and medicinal properties. However, limited research exists regarding their kernel oils. This study aimed to compare the chemical composition, quality parameters, and bioactive potential of the kernel oils extracted from Prunus avium L. and Prunus spinosa L. The kernel oils' fatty acid and tocopherol profiles were characterized, and the presence of bioactive compounds were identified and quantified. Total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AAC) were also measured, indicating the presence of bioactive compounds in both oils. Additionally, the main quality parameters, including oxidative status, were evaluated. The fatty acid analysis revealed a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to monounsaturated fatty acids in both kernel oil samples. Linoleic acid (57–64%) and oleic acid (18–29%) were the major fatty acids in both Prunus avium L. and Prunus spinosa L. kernel oils. α-Eleostearic acid (11.87%) was quantified only in Prunus avium kernel oil. Furthermore, the α-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherol content were determined, and it was found that both kernel oils contained γ-tocopherol as the major tocopherol (~204–237 mg/Kg). TPC in Prunus avium L. kernel oil was measured at 9.5 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/Kg and recorded as ~316% higher TPC than Prunus spinosa L. kernel oil. However, the recorded AAC were 11.87 and 14.22 μmol Trolox equivalent (TE)/Kg oil, respectively. Both oils recorded low peroxide values (~1.50 mmol H2O2/Kg), and low TBARS value (~0.4 mmol malondialdehyde equivalents, MDAE/Kg oil), but high p-anisidine value (23–32). Staphylococcus aureus is a lethal pathogen that can cause various bacterial infections. This study targets the CrtM enzyme of S. aureus, which is crucial for synthesizing golden carotenoid pigment: staphyloxanthin, which provides anti-oxidant activity to this bacterium for combating antimicrobial resistance inside the host cell. The present investigation quests for human SQS inhibitors against the CrtM enzyme by employing structure-based drug design approaches including induced fit docking (IFD), molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, and binding free energy calculations. Depending upon the docking scores, two compounds, lapaquistat acetate and squalestatin analog 20, were identified as the lead molecules exhibit higher affinity toward the CrtM enzyme. These docked complexes were further subjected to 100 ns MD simulation and several thermodynamics parameters were analyzed. Further, the binding free energies (ΔG) were calculated for each simulated protein–ligand complex to study the stability of molecular contacts using the MM-GBSA approach. Pre-ADMET analysis was conducted for systematic evaluation of physicochemical and medicinal chemistry properties of these compounds. The above study suggested that lapaquistat acetate and squalestatin analog 20 can be selected as potential lead candidates with promising binding affinity for the S. aureus CrtM enzyme. In this study freeze-drying and oven-drying (at 50 and 65 °C) were applied for the preparation of dried pumpkin waste. The effect of drying methods on physical properties (moisture content, water activity, hygroscopicity, water solubility, bulk and tapped density, flowability and colour), content of bioactive compounds (carotenoids and phenolics) and antioxidant activity were investigated. Also, the influence of one-year storage at -20 °C on the bioactive compounds content and the antioxidant activity of dried pumpkin waste was examined. Results indicated that drying method showed a significant impact on the investigated characteristics. Bioactive compounds content and antioxidant activity by DPPH test of freeze-dried were higher than of oven-dried pumpkin waste, while higher antioxidant activity in reducing power assay was determined by oven-dried pumpkin waste. An artificial neural network model was developed, for the anticipation of antioxidant activity according to bioactive compounds content (phenolics and carotenoids), in oven-dried (at 50 and 65 °C) and in freeze-dried pumpkin waste after one-year storage. These models showed good prediction properties (the r² value during training cycle for output variables was 0.999). It was demonstrated that pumpkin waste is potentially an important source of bioactive compounds, which can be used after extraction in suitable forms in the development of functional food products. Heavy metal cadmium (Cd) naturally occurs in soil and is a hazardous trace contaminant for humans, animals, and plants. The main sources of Cd pollution in soil include overuse of phosphatic fertilizers, manure, sewage sludge, and aerial deposition. That's why an experiment was conducted to analyze the effect of Cd toxicity in Capsicum annuum L. by selecting its seven varieties: Hybrid, Desi, Sathra, G-916, BR-763, BG-912, and F1-9226. Cadmium was spiked in soil with four levels, i.e., (0, 3, 4, and 5 mg Cd kg− 1 of soil) for a week for homogeneous dispersion of heavy metal. Chili seeds were sown in compost-filled loamy soil, and 25-day-old seedlings were transplanted into Cd-spiked soil. Cadmium increasing concentration in soil decreased chili growth characteristics, total soluble sugars, total proteins, and amino acids. On the other hand, the activities of antioxidant enzymes were increased with the increasing concentration of Cd in almost all the varieties. Treatment 5 mg Cd/kg application caused − 197.39%, -138.78%, -60.77%, -17.84%, -16.34%, -11.82% and − 10.37% decrease of carotenoids level in chili V2 (Desi) followed by V4 (G-916), V1 (Hy7brid), V7 (F1-9226), V6 (BG-912), V5 (BR-763) and V3 (Sathra) as compared to their controls. The maximum flavonoids among varieties were in V5 (BR-763), followed by V6 (BG-912), V7 (F1-9226), V3 (Sathra) and V1 (Hybrid). Flavonoids content was decreased with − 37.63% (Sathra), -34.78% (Hybrid), -33.85% (G-916), -31.96% (F1-9226), -31.44% (Desi), -30.58% (BR-763), -22.88% (BG-912) as compared to their control at 5 mg Cd/kg soil stress. The maximum decrease in POD, SOD, and CAT was − 31.81%, -25.98%, -16.39% in chili variety V7 (F1-9226) at 5 mg Cd/kg stress compared to its control. At the same time, maximum APX content decrease was − 82.91%, followed by -80.16%, -65.19%, -40.31%, -30.14%, -10.34% and − 6.45% in V4 (G-916), V2 (Desi), V3 (Sathra), V6 (BG-912), V1 (Hybrid), V7 (F1-9226) and V5 (BR-763) at 5 mg Cd/kg treatment as compared to control chili plants. The highest CAT was found in 5 chili varieties except Desi and G-916. Desi and G-916 varieties. V5 (BR-763) and V6 (BG-912) were susceptible, while V1 (Hybrid), V3 (Sathra), and V7 (F1-9226) were with intermediate growth attributes against Cd stress. Storage changes of antioxidants in previously developed beverage formulations from Hibiscus sabdarriffa extract, pineapple, oranges and carrots (26.3, 40, 17.2 and 16.5%), respectively was investigated. The blend was filled into bottles and part of it pasteurized at 90°C for 5 min and the other part left unpasteurized. The pasteurized and unpasteurized samples were stored at room and refrigeration temperature for 4 months and were analyzed each month. The pH, vitamin C, carotenoid, color parameters and antioxidants decreased significantly (p˂0.05), while the TTA and microbial loads increased with increase in storage period. Antioxidant activities in all the beverage samples decreased significantly (p˂0.05) after 4 months of storage; however, refrigerated storage temperature maintained higher antioxidants activities. The combination of pasteurization and refrigeration storage retained about 75% vitamin C, 53% carotenoid and 56–79% antioxidants, respectively. Background & Aims: Azoospermia (lack of sperm in ejaculation) is one of the most severe types of infertility in men, due to various defects in the sperm production process or the testicular system . Azoospermia disease is caused by either obstructive mechanism (Obstructive azoospermia-OA) due to blockages in the natural sperm production system, or non-obstructive mechanism (NOA- Non obstructive azoospermia) due to defects in testicular sperm production, with over 60% of infertile men being afflicted with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). Treatment with busulfan may have adverse effects on various organs such as reproductive organs. Based on the understanding of hormonal control of sperm production, several drugs such as gonadotropins, androgens, estrogen receptor blockers, and aromatase inhibitors are used as experimental treatments for idiopathic male infertility. Letrozole, as an aromatase inhibitor, has been widely used in the treatment of female infertility, because the chemical structure of letrozole includes a triazole group that selectively interacts with the heme group of the enzyme P450arom, thereby reversibly inhibiting its biological activity Limited studies have evaluated the therapeutic potential of Letrozole in male infertility. In addition, excessive consumption of chemical drugs causes changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes (TOS) and the stability of oxidative status (TAC) in the ROS pathway, leading to an imbalance between antioxidants and oxidants, resulting in oxidative stress. This phenomenon has led researchers towards the use of herbal medicines, which naturally have fewer side effects. Crocin has been identified as the main active biological component in saffron. Crocins are a type of water-soluble carotenoids that are either mono- or diglycosyl polyene esters, where D-gentiobiose and/or D-glucose appear as carbohydrate residues. A carotenoid with a 20-carbon dicarboxylic structure. Saffron contains various carotenoid chemicals that include small amounts of crocin, alpha and beta carotene, and lycopene. Six different forms of glycosylated esters from the crocin family have been found in saffron. Trans-crocins 3 and 4 are the most common analogs of crocins, which include crocins 1-4, and are essentially the glycosides of trans-crocin in saffron. Crocin can act as an antioxidant and improve the quality of sperm through increasing the expression of antioxidant genes. Therefore, phytoestrogens such as crocin bind to testicular estrogen receptors and stimulate spermatogenesis by strategies like increasing epithelial layers and the diameter of seminiferous tubules and lumen. The aim of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of letrozole and crocin on the changes of antioxidant enzymes and testosterone hormone synthesis in the induction of spermatogenesis in azoospermia model mice with busulfan using ELISA technique. Methods: In this clinical trial, crocin and letrozole drugs were purchased from Sigma Aldrich. 30 male Wistar mice weighing 180-220 grams and aged approximately 8-10 weeks were purchased from the Pasteur Institute of Iran and transferred to the laboratory. They were kept under new conditions (at a temperature of 22-24 degrees Celsius, relative humidity of 55-60%, with a 12- hour light-dark cycle). To halt spermatogenesis and induce azoospermia, a dose of 10 mg/kg of busulfan was injected intraperitoneally for 10 days. Finally, the rats were divided into 5 groups of 6: the control group was injected with normal saline and citrate buffer inside the hemocoel; the treatment group received a single dose of 10 mg busulfan intra protanealat at a volume of 1.0 mL for 10 days; the treatment group was administered with a single dose of 10 mg busulfan intra protanealat at a volume of 1.0 mL, along with 5 mg letrozole with Black Soldier Fly (BSF) as the solvent; the treatment group received 15 mg crocin extract with normal saline, along with a single dose of 10 mg busulfan intra protanealat a volume of 1.0 mL; and the treatment group was given a single dose of 10 mg busulfan intra protanealat at a volume of 1.0 mL, along with 5 mg letrozole with BSF as the solvent, and 15 mg crocin extract with normal saline and underwent histopathological, histochemical immunological, and hormonal analyses. The data were presented as mean ± standard deviation. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's post hoc test was used to compare the means in the study groups (P <0.05), and statistically significant differences were considered. Graphs were also plotted using Graph Prism software. Results: The results demonstrated that the simultaneous treatment of letrozole and crocin increased spermatogonia, spermatocytes, and spermatids; Sertoli and Leydig cells were also enhanced. Additionally, letrozole and crocin treatment led to the preservation of the thickness of the basement membrane and the germinal epithelium of testicular tissue; the inner and outer diameters of the tubules were increased. While in the azoospermia group treated with letrozole or crocin, this level of population destruction was somewhat reduced; however, the use of letrozole or crocin in the study groups did not show a significant difference in the inner and outer diameter of the tubules. Biochemical analysis showed a significant increase in the activity of the Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) enzyme activity and testosterone hormone levels in the group treated with letrozole + crosine compared to the azoospermia group; however, a significant decrease was found in the letrozole or crosine treatment group compared to the control group, while the Total Oxidant Status (TOS) enzyme activity in the letrozol+crosine treatment group showed a significant decrease compared to the azoospermia group(P<0.05). Conclusion: Some of the improvements in sperm parameters can be attributed to the antioxidant properties of crocin. It seems that sperm lose a large volume of their cytoplasm due to lack of antioxidants during spermatogenesis and become more sensitive to increases in ROS. These results indicate that crocin can act as an antioxidant and enhance sperm quality by increasing the expression of antioxidant genes. Therefore, the use of a plant-derived antioxidant like crocin appears necessary without any side effects and with essential strengthening effects. Crocin can likely act as an antioxidant and potentially improve sperm quality due to its antioxidant activity. Additionally, it has been found that letrozole improves spermatogenesis without causing any observable pathological changes in testicular tissue. According to the studies of Ribeiro et al, Uzun et al, and Shoshany and colleagues, letrozole reversibly inhibits the aromatase enzyme and prevents the conversion of androgen precursors to estradiol in adipose tissue. Moreover, crocin can neutralize the negative effects of oxidative stress and increase cell ability to overcome oxidative stress conditions by preventing glutathione reduction and increasing antioxidant capacity. One of the limitations of the research can be attributed to the lack of studies and sample restrictions, as well as the death of mice during the experimental process. Further investigations and focusing on the precise dosage of crocin, along with attention to the relevant mechanisms of action, seem essential. Overall, crocin has antioxidant and defensive effects, improves the quality of some sperms, and increases morphology, viability, motility, and natural count. In fact, testosterone regulates the secretion of LH hormone from the anterior pituitary gland through a negative feedback mechanism. Busulfan induced apoptosis in germinal epithelial cells and co-administration of letrozole and crocin reduced busulfan-induced apoptosis leading to infertility; therefore, a rational relationship between apoptosis of spermatogonia in response to busulfan exposure can be obtained. It can be suggested that crocin, one of the key components of saffron, acts as a potent antioxidant that can prevent the toxic effects of busulfan and DNA damage that may occur due to oxidative stress. Summary: This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and individual dietary antioxidant intakes, including vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids, and bone mineral density (BMD) in the US population aged 20 years older. We found a positive correlation between CDAI and femoral BMD. Moreover, higher intakes of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, and carotenoids were associated with higher femoral BMD. Introduction: While individual dietary antioxidants have shown beneficial effects on bone metabolism, the diverse and potentially interacting nature of dietary components may limit the accuracy of evaluating their impact on bone health. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between CDAI and BMD. Additionally, we explore the relationship between the intake of individual components of the CDAI and BMD. Methods: The CDAI is a novel index evaluating total dietary antioxidant intake, considering vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from participants aged ≥ 20 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2010, 2013–2014, and 2017–2018). We utilized multivariate linear regression models to examine the relationship between CDAI, individual dietary antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, carotenoids, and femoral BMD. Results: The final analysis included 10,584 participants with a mean age of 50.73 ± 16.65 years. After multivariate adjustment, the second to fourth quartiles of CDAI (− 2.00–0.04, 0.04–2.54, and 2.54–70.78) exhibited higher femoral BMD compared to the first quartile of CADI (− 7.34 to − 2.00). Multiple regression analysis revealed that higher intakes of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, and carotenoids were associated with higher femoral BMD. Conclusions: CDAI serves as a comprehensive tool for evaluating the overall antioxidant capacity of antioxidants in diets. Additionally, our study shows a positive correlation between CDAI and BMD, which indicates that the combined intake of dietary antioxidants may help reduce the risk of osteoporosis in adults. The multipurpose tree Diploknema butyracea (Roxb. H.J. Lam), known locally as chiuri, is vital for food security and beekeeping in rural Nepal. This study examines its nutritional and phytochemical traits sourced from a Chepang community in Makwanpur, Nepal. This research focuses on macronutrients like carbohydrates, protein, fat, and ash alongside phytochemicals such as phenolic content, vitamin C, β-carotene, and lycopene. The study aimed to estimate this fruit's antimicrobial and antioxidant characteristics. The pulp and seed samples were analyzed for their nutritional and phytochemical components using standard methods (AOAC 1995). We determined the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity using the DPPH assay and agar diffusion method respectively. This fruit has a high-fat content: 30.29% in the seed and 20.23% in the pulp. The pulp and seed also contain noteworthy levels of the total phenolic content (486.08 ± 0.006 and 182. 26 ± 0.001 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent (GAEs) /100 g), vitamin C (20.70 ± 0.002 and 19.08 ± 0.005 mg Ascorbic Acid (AA)/100 g) with trace extents of compounds lycopene, β-carotene and carotenoids. We observed the antioxidant activity at 2207 ± 0.01 g/mL in pulp and 1841.05 ± 0.77 g/mL in seed, which is a substantial value. Both were discovered to be effective against Candida albicans at doses ranging from 25 to 100 mg/mL. Rose is a commercially significant floricultural crop that has been used for various industrial as well as decoration purposes. Along with the beautification of rose flowers, their leaves are enriched with different biologically active compounds having various therapeutic uses. The current study was performed on the phytochemical and antioxidant activity of aqueous extracts of rose leaves. In our study, we found there are consequential variations observed in all the parameters, viz., total chlorophyll, carotenoids, total anthocyanin, total phenol, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity, among all the varieties. Among the ten varieties, Thelma Barlow revealed the maximum phenolic content (35.19 mg/g FW), flavonoids content (15.97 mg/g FW), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity of IC50 value (206.86 ± 0.49 µg/mL), and 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) (301.62 ± 2.31 µg/mL). The variety Grand Amore presented the highest values for total chlorophyll (1.41 mg/g FW) and carotenoids (36.29 mg/g FW) content compared to other varieties. Also, a comparative correlation was studied amongst the phyto-chemicals such as anthocyanin content, total phenolic content, flavonoids, and antioxidant activities. Amongst the different rose varieties, Grand Amore and Thelma Barlow contain higher antioxidant potential, owing to their greater phytochemical activity. From our findings, we collectively concluded that fresh rose leaves contain potentially higher phenolic and flavonoid content, i.e., are responsible for higher antioxidant activity, which can be utilized for various pharmacological as well as food industries. Microgreens of four species of the family Brassicaceae (broccoli, mizuna, radish, and arugula) were grown under 16- and/or 24-h photoperiod conditions. In the first series of experiments, the daily light integral (DLI) was different (15.6 and 23.3 mol m–2 day–1 at PAR 270 µmol m–2 s–1), while it was the same (15.6 mol m–2 day–1 at PAR 270 µmol m–2 s–1 and 180 µmol m–2 s–1) in the second. In the third series of experiments, continuous lighting was used only in the last three days before harvesting. The results obtained showed that broccoli, mizuna, radish, and arugula plants in the early phases of growth are resistant to continuous lighting and do not show typical signs of leaf photodamage. In all three series of experiments, microgreens of all four species grown under 24-h photoperiod had a higher yield and nutritional value (higher content of substances with antioxidant properties—anthocyanins, flavonoids, carotenoids, and proline—as well as increased activity of antioxidant enzymes) and a lower content of nitrates compared to plants grown under 16-h photoperiod. It was concluded that it is possible through the use of continuous lighting without increasing energy costs (while maintaining the DLI) to increase the yield and nutritional value of the studied species of microgreens and reduce their nitrate content compared to the standard 16-h photoperiod. In addition, an increase in nutritional value and a decrease in nitrate content is also possible with the use of continuous lighting (as an agricultural practice) for several days immediately before harvesting. Acerola is a fruit rich in vitamin C, in addition to having high levels of anthocyanins and carotenoids, which are antioxidant pigments that give the fruit its red color. Thus, the objective of this work was to concentrate bioactive compounds, by the method of block freeze concentration, using acerola juice in natura. Fresh juice and freeze concentration fractions (concentrate and ice) were evaluated for pH, acidity, soluble solids, total solids, quantification of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. From the results obtained, it was observed that the method of freeze block concentration in blocks resulted in the concentration of soluble and total solids and acidity. In addition, it significantly concentrated the phenolic compounds, keeping the process efficiency above 39%. Regarding the antioxidant activity, the values were significantly higher in the obtained concentrates than in the initial juice. The highest antioxidant potential found was for the juice retained in the last step of the process, with activity about 1.7 times greater than the initial juice. As the freeze concentration stages progressed, an increase in the concentration factors in the total solids content was observed, with an average increase of approximately 131% in the third stage. Thus, the results obtained in this work suggest that the method of block freeze concentration applied to acerola juice, provided a product with greater antioxidant activity and concentration of phenolic compounds, which shows that this is a viable method for the concentration of bioactive compounds. from acerola. Summary: This study investigated the effect of fermentation by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 75 (L75) on the physicochemical properties, survival of L75, sensory, antioxidants and their activities in leaf smoothies of six sweet potato cultivars [Orange‐fleshed (OFSP): 'Bophelo', and 'Beauregard'; cream‐fleshed (CFSP): 'Blesbok' and 'Ndou'; and purple‐fleshed (PFSP): '08.21p' and 'Purple‐purple']. Fermentation significantly affected the physiochemical properties. Fermentation for 24 h improved the carotenoid (TCC), ascorbic acid (AA) (6.8, 6.0 mg 100 g−1) and total phenolic (4435 mg 100 g−1) significantly in, 'Bophelo' smoothies. Whilst 48 h fermentation significantly increased the TCC, AA, organic acids, valine and alanine levels in 'Blesbok' smoothies'. Principal component analysis separated the unfermented 'Bophelo' and Purple‐purple' leaf smoothies from fermented leaf smoothies of OFSP, CSFP, and PFSP. DPPH scavenging activity and alpha‐carotene were effective markers for separating fermented from unfermented leaf smoothies in the variable importance study. Aim: Islets of Langerhans are more sensitive to oxidative damage because of their low antioxidant capacity. In diabetes, methylglyoxal (MG) accumulates in the pancreas. The present study examined the effect of crocin on oxidative stress induced by MG in isolated Langerhans islets from male mice. Material and Methods: Twenty-four male mice weighing 20 to 25 g were prepared. The isolated Langerhans islets were transferred to the culture medium. Oxidative stress was induced through MG administration for 30 min, and then 10, 20, 30, and 40 μM of crocin was used for 2 h. Samples were divided into seven groups with 2.8, 5.6, and 16.7 mM glucose concentrations: control, MG 300 μM, MG+glibenclamide 10 μM, and MG+crocin in four doses of 10, 20, 30, and 40 μM. At the end, the islet's insulin, antioxidant levels, and lipid peroxidation were assessed by ELISA and calorimetry methods. Results: Increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in MG groups significantly decreased in 2.8 (p=0.008), 5.6 (p=0.004), and 16.7 (p<0.001) mM glucose concentrations, with administration of 30 and 40 μM crocin. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was reduced in MG groups (p<0.001) and significantly restored in all crocin-treated groups in 2.8, 5.6, and 16.7 mM glucose concentrations. Also, a significant decrease in insulin secretion and content was observed in MG groups of all three glucose concentrations (p<0.001). Crocin at high doses improved these alterations. Conclusion: MG caused oxidative damage and reduced insulin secretion in isolated islets. Crocin improved the antioxidant defense system, diminished MDA, and increased insulin secretion. Oxidative stress induced by factors such as ammonia nitrogen has become a major issue in shrimp farming. The effects of carotenoids on the growth and antioxidant capability of Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles were investigated in this study using dietary archaeal carotenoids supplementation. For four weeks, shrimp were given diets containing 0 mg/kg (Ctrl) and 55.98 mg/kg (Car) archaeal carotenoids. Dietary archaeal carotenoids significantly enhanced the astaxanthin content in shrimp muscles and carapaces, as well as the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity (P<0.05). The malonaldehyde (MDA) content in Car group significantly decreased (P<0.05). The transcriptome analysis was conducted to determine the molecular processes in response to archaeal carotenoids supplementation. A total of 1 536 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected, including 538 upregulated DEGs and 998 downregulated DEGs. GO functional enrichment analysis between Ctrl and Car indicated that 26 GO terms including extracellular region, metabolic process, and proteolysis were enriched. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed that the amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, cysteine and methionine metabolism, glycine serine and threonine metabolism, and amino acid biosynthesis were enriched. Archaeal carotenoids influenced the expression of several important genes involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, Nrf2 signaling, and antioxidant enzymes. Seven DEGs were chosen to confirm the RNA-Seq data using qRT-PCR. This research study aims to evaluate the effect of ultrasound (US) pretreatment on the quality of crude palm (Elaeis guineensis) oil (ACP) during three stages of the extraction process: 1) press liquor (LP), pre-clarifier input (EC), and pre-clarifier output sludge (LS). Spectrophotometry is used to determine the bleaching deterioration index (DOBI). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is applied to identify phenolic compounds and antioxidants. Color changes are established by photocolorimetry with the CIELab scale. The results show that applying US (40 and 80 kHz/30 min) during the extraction stages significantly increases antioxidant and phenolic compound concentrations, preserving and attenuating the ACP’s color. There are no significant changes in DOBI when compared to the control. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cultivars on the concentration of antioxidant compounds: total carotenoid content (TC) and vitamin C (VC), and their correlation with the total antioxidant activity (TAA) in 65 potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum) from 10 countries. The TC content revealed a highly significant effect of the year (Y), cultivar (C) and flesh colour (FC). The TC ranged from 101.5 µg 100 g−1 DM (in cv. Kelly) to 715 µg 100 g−1 DM (in cv. Mayan Gold). The TC values were weakly correlated with years and higher in yellow-fleshed potatoes than in white-fleshed potatoes (319.9 vs. 175.6 µg 100 g−1 DM, respectively). The VC content ranged from 1.0 mg 100 g−1 FM (in cv. Bzura) to 14.8 mg 100 g−1 FM (in cv. Twinner). The content of VC were higher in yellow-fleshed (6.5 mg 100 g−1 FM) than in white-fleshed potatoes (5.8 mg 100 g−1 FM). The highest TAA were observed in cvs. Colleen, Basa, Triplo, Gatsby, Ditta, Twinner, Riviera, Michalina, Damaris, Belmonda, Ambo, Savinja, 12-LHI-6. For these cultivars, the FRAP values were 0.53 µmol TE 100 mg−1 DM and DPPH 0.55 µmol TE 100 mg−1 DM. The lowest TAA were observed in cvs.: Owacja, Mayan Gold, Kokra, Magnolia and Kelly. BACKGROUND: Rosehip fruits cannot be eaten as entire fruits in their fresh feature so they processed into various products including pestils. OBJECTIVE: In the current work, rosehip pestil as a new healthy snack food was developed by using hot air (HA) drying at 55, 65 and 75°C, vacuum (VC) drying at 55, 65 and 75°C with 25 kPa and microwave (MCW) drying at 90 and 180 W. METHODS: The effect of three different drying methods on drying kinetics and quality parameters i.e., total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity (AC), Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) formation, lycopene, β-carotene content, element composition, color, texture and sensorial properties of rosehip pestils was studied. RESULTS: Wang and Singh model was best fitted for MCW drying at 90 W, however Page and Modified Page models were best fitted for other drying conditions. The rosehip pestils dried by MCW drying method had highest drying rate, TPC, AC, lycopene and β-carotene content, element concentration, color values, whereas their HMF content and sensorial properties were not acceptable. Sensory evaluation results indicated that rosehip pestils dried with HA was rated the most acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that rosehip pestil with its sensorial and nutritive properties could be an alternative product for the functional food market. However, it has been seen that the drying methods used alone have some disadvantages. For this reason, it may be possible to eliminate these disadvantages if hybrid drying methods (for example MCW drying followed by HA or VC drying) are preferred in future studies. Background: Oxidative stress contributes to pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Higher levels of the dietary antioxidants— carotenoids and tocopherols— are associated with better cognitive functions and lower risk for AD, and lower levels of multiple carotenoids are found in serum and plasma of patients with AD. Although brains donated by individuals with mild cognitive impairment had significantly lower levels of lutein and beta-carotene, previous investigators found no significant difference in carotenoid levels of brains with AD and cognitively normal brains. Objective: This study tested the hypothesis that micronutrients are significantly lower in donor brains with AD than in healthy elderly brains. Methods: Samples of donor brains with confirmed AD or verified health were dissected into grey and white matter, extracted with organic solvents and analyzed by HPLC. Results: AD brains had significantly lower levels of lutein, zeaxanthin, anhydrolutein, retinol, lycopene, and alpha-tocopherol, and significantly increased levels of XMiAD, an unidentified xanthophyll metabolite. No meso-zeaxanthin was detected. The overlapping protective roles of xanthophylls, carotenes, α- and γ-tocopherol are discussed. Conclusion: Brains with AD had substantially lower concentrations of some, but not all, xanthophylls, carotenes, and tocopherols, and several-fold higher concentrations of an unidentified xanthophyll metabolite increased in AD (XMiAD). In women, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer (11.7% of total cases) and the leading cause of cancer death (6.9%) worldwide. Bioactive dietary components such as Sea buckthorn berries are known for their high carotenoid content, which has been shown to possess anti-cancer properties. Considering the limited number of studies investigating the bioactive properties of carotenoids in breast cancer, the aim of this study was to investigate the antiproliferative, antioxidant, and proapoptotic properties of saponified lipophilic Sea buckthorn berries extract (LSBE) in two breast cancer cell lines with different phenotypes: T47D (ER+, PR+, HER2−) and BT-549 (ER-, PR-, HER2−). The antiproliferative effects of LSBE were evaluated by an Alamar Blue assay, the extracellular antioxidant capacity was evaluated through DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, the intracellular antioxidant capacity was evaluated through a DCFDA assay, and the apoptosis rate was assessed by flow cytometry. LSBE inhibited the proliferation of breast cancer cells in a concentration-dependent manner, with a mean IC50 of 16 µM. LSBE has proven to be a good antioxidant both at the intracellular level, due to its ability to significantly decrease the ROS levels in both cell lines (p = 0.0279 for T47D, and p = 0.0188 for BT-549), and at the extracellular level, where the ABTS and DPPH inhibition vried between 3.38–56.8%, respectively 5.68–68.65%, and 35.6 mg/L equivalent ascorbic acid/g LSBE were recorded. Based on the results from the antioxidant assays, LSBE was found to have good antioxidant activity due to its rich carotenoid content. The flow cytometry results revealed that LSBE treatment induced significant alterations in late-stage apoptotic cells represented by 80.29% of T47D cells (p = 0.0119), and 40.6% of BT-549 cells (p = 0.0137). Considering the antiproliferative, antioxidant, and proapoptotic properties of the carotenoids from LSBE on breast cancer cells, further studies should investigate whether these bioactive dietary compounds could be used as nutraceuticals in breast cancer therapy. Carotenoids are isoprenoid compounds that play a role as pigments in photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic organisms. Carotenoids are essential in biological systems by acting as antioxidants. Thus, carotenoids have numerous applications in the environment, food, and medical sectors. Presently, most of the commercially available carotenoids are either extracted from different plants or produced synthetically using chemicals. The need to develop naturally derived pigments made it indispensable to discover alternate sources of carotenoids. Microbes have immense potential to produce carotenoids and thus, act as promising substitutes for chemically synthesized carotenoids. Microbial carotenoid production offers advantages, such as controlled cultivation and minimized production period. Moreover, the capability of microbes to utilize lignocellulosic waste as a substrate for the synthesis of carotenoids makes the overall process more sustainable. This review highlights the production of carotenoids from bacterial, fungal, and algal sources, followed by genetic modification of carotenogenic and non-carotenogenic species. The use of efficient solar ovens can be a way for progressing ecofriendly technologies in the field of food preparation. In most performing direct solar ovens, the sun rays reach the foods directly, therefore, it becomes essential to check whether, in these conditions, foods can retain theirnutraceutical properties (antioxidants, vitamins and carotenoids). In the present research work, to investigate this issue, several foods (vegetables, meats, and a fish sample) were analyzed before and after cooking (traditional oven, solar oven, and solar oven with a UV filter). The content of lipophilic vitamins and carotenoids (analyzed via HPLC-MS) and the variation of total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity (via Folin–Ciocalteu and DPPH assays) have evidenced that cooking with the direct solar oven allows to preserve some nutrients (i.e., tocopherols) and, sometimes, to enhance nutraceutical properties of vegetables (for example, solar oven-cooked eggplants showed 38% higher TPC compared to electric oven cooked sample) and meats. The specific isomerization of all-trans-β-carotene to 9-cis was also detected. Simple Summary: Using molecular markers, we confirmed the taxonomic status of Bacopa monnieri from Mexico. We obtained the pigment and carotenoid profiles, total phenols, antioxidants, and bioassayed the biological activities (anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity) of the four wild populations. Our results show the great potential of B. monnieri as a natural source of compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity properties. Therefore, the raw material of this plant may be effectively used as a nutritional and medicinal supplement. Some of the species of the genus Bacopa have been used in Pharmacopoeia worldwide. However, in Mexico, Bacopa monnieri has neither been extensively cultivated nor studied, nor has their use in traditional medicine been reported. The aim of this work was to assess the taxonomic verification of the four wild populations of B. monnieri, the chemical content of their pigments and phenols and to provide an analysis of their potential bioactivity. B. monnieri wild populations from Mexico were validated using molecular markers. Chromatographic profiling using HPLC-PDA revealed 21 compounds comprising 12 chlorophylls and nine carotenoids; of the latter, the major ones were lutein (0.921 ± 0.031 μg/mg of dry extract) and β-carotene (0.095 ± 0.003 μg/mg of dry extract). The total phenolic content, determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu assay, ranged from 54.8 ± 5.8 to 70.3 ± 2.2 µg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/mg. Plant extracts scavenged from the free radical DPPH in IC50 ranged from 130.6 ± 3.0 to 249.9 ± 12.1 µg dry extract/mL. In terms of the anti-inflammatory potential, the most effective extract was from a soil-based plant from Jalisco (BS), reduced from nitric oxide in a RAW 264.7 culture medium, with an IC50 value of 134 µg of dry extract/mL. The BS extract showed a significant neutral lipid-reducing activity in the zebrafish model, ranging from 3.13 μg/mL p < 0.05 to 100 μg/mL p < 0.0001. Microalgal biomass represents a very interesting biological feedstock to be converted into several high-value products in a biorefinery approach. In this study, the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 was used to obtain different classes of molecules: proteins, carotenoids and lipids by using a cascade approach. In particular, the protein extract showed a selective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, whereas carotenoids were found to be active as antioxidants both in vitro and on a cell-based model. Finally, for the first time, lipids were recovered from Synechocystis biomass as the last class of molecules and were successfully used as an alternative substrate for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) by the native PHA producer Pseudomonas resinovorans. Simple Summary: Oxidative stress is recognized as one of the pathogenetic mechanisms underpinning insulin resistance, the hallmark of type 2 diabetes. Although oxidative stress can be elicited by unhealthy dietary patterns rich in long-chain saturated fatty acids and sugars, it may be exacerbated in genetically predisposed individuals carrying single nucleotide polymorphisms which dampen the activity of proteins responsible for maintaining redox balance, that is, the balance between oxygen and nitrogen reactive species production and their detoxification. In light of this, this literature review aims at providing an overview of the potential role of microalgae as a source of nutraceuticals able to improve insulin sensitivity by tackling oxidative stress, particularly in the aforementioned individuals. Microalgae represent a source of phenolic compounds, carotenoids, vitamins, and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids which are able to counter oxidative stress, by either modulating intracellular pathways related to inflammation and oxidative stress or by acting as direct reactive oxygen species scavengers. Thus, microalgae represent a promising tool for precise nutritional interventions to tackle oxidative stress and improve insulin sensitivity. Nevertheless, further studies are warranted to confirm whether their supplementation in genetically predisposed individuals may be sufficient to restore redox balance and counter insulin resistance. Microalgae represent a growing innovative source of nutraceuticals such as carotenoids and phenolic compound which are naturally present within these single-celled organisms or can be induced in response to specific growth conditions. The presence of the unfavourable allelic variant in genes involved in the control of oxidative stress, due to one or more SNPs in gene encoding protein involved in the regulation of redox balance, can lead to pathological conditions such as insulin resistance, which, in turn, is directly involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this review we provide an overview of the main SNPs in antioxidant genes involved in the promotion of insulin resistance with a focus on the potential role of microalgae-derived antioxidant molecules as novel nutritional tools to mitigate oxidative stress and improve insulin sensitivity. BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may contribute to the development of childhood obesity and metabolic disorders. However, little is known about whether the maternal nutritional status during pregnancy can modulate these associations. OBJECTIVES: The main objective was to characterize the joint associations and interactions between prenatal levels of POPs and nutrients on childhood obesity. METHODS: We used data from to the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente–Environment and Childhood (INMA) birth cohort, on POPs and nutritional biomarkers measured in maternal blood collected at the first trimester of pregnancy and child anthropometric measurements at 7 years of age. Six organochlorine compounds (OCs) [dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), β-hexachlorocyclohexane ( β-HCH) and polychlorinated biphenyls 138, 153, 180] and four per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were measured. Nutrients included vitamins (D, B12, and folate), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and dietary carotenoids. Two POPs–nutrients mixtures data sets were established: 푎) OCs, PFAS, vitamins, and carotenoids (푛=660), and 푏) OCs, PUFAs, and vitamins (푛=558). Joint associations of mixtures on obesity were characterized using Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). Relative importance of biomarkers and two-way interactions were identified using gradient boosting machine, hierarchical group lasso regularization, and BKMR. Interactions were further characterized using multivariate regression models in the multiplicative and additive scale. RESULTS: Forty percent of children had overweight or obesity. We observed a positive overall joint association of both POPs-nutrients mixtures on overweight/obesity risk, with HCB and vitamin B12 the biomarkers contributing the most. Recurrent interactions were found between HCB and vitamin B12 across screening models. Relative risk for a natural log increase of HCB was 1.31 (95% CI: 1.11, 1.54, 푝Interaction =0.02) in the tertile 2 of vitamin B12 and in the additive scale a relative excess risk due to interaction of 0.11 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.20) was found. Interaction between perfluorooctane sulfonate and β-cryptoxanthin suggested a protective effect of the antioxidant on overweight/obesity risk. CONCLUSION: These results support that maternal nutritional status may modulate the effect of prenatal exposure to POPs on childhood overweight/ obesity. Fruits from rosehip (Rosa canina L.) are gaining popularity due to their content and profile of bioactive components. Rosehip is distinct for its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anticancer properties. However, the abundance of these bioactives led to a tart taste, resulting in its consumption mainly in processed form. Due to microbiological safety, pasteurization is the preferred way of processing, which affects the chemical properties of the juice. A promising approach to improve acceptability of rosehip's physical properties, while preserving its bioactive compounds and adding health-promoting benefits, is to enrich the rosehip juice with functional carriers before drying. The influence of the carrier type (maltodextrin, inulin, trehalose, palatinose) and drying technique (spray- and freeze-drying) on the physical, chemical, and antioxidant properties of pasteurized, and non-pasteurized juice powders was examined in this study. In addition, the ability of powders with functional carriers to inhibit protein glycation was evaluated. Spray drying led to products with improved physical properties in relation to freeze-drying. The addition of carrier substances significantly influenced the antioxidant capacity determined by TEAC ABTS and FRAP methods, whereby the application of inulin and palatinose retained antioxidant capacity better than the frequently used maltodextrin. Accumulation and metabolic profile of phenolic compounds (PheCs; serving as UV-screening pigments and antioxidants) as well as carbon fixation rate (An) and plant growth are sensitive to irradiance and temperature. Since these factors are naturally co-acting in the environment, it is worthy to study the combined effects of these environmental factors to assess their possible physiological consequences. We investigated how low and high irradiance in combination with different temperatures modify the metabolic profile of PheCs and expression of genes involved in the antioxidative enzyme and PheCs biosynthesis, in relation to photosynthetic activity and availability of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in spring barley seedlings. High irradiance positively affected An, NSC, PheCs content, and antioxidant activity (AOX). High temperature led to decreased An, NSC, and increased dark respiration, whilst low temperature was accompanied by reduction of UV-A shielding but increase of PheCs content and AOX. Besides that, irradiance and temperature caused changes in the metabolic profile of PheCs, particularly alteration in homoorientin/isovitexin derivatives ratio, possibly related to demands on AOX-based protection. Moreover, we also observed changes in the ratio of sinapoyl-/feruloyl- acylated flavonoids, the function of which is not yet known. Background: Recently Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNPs) are widely used in different fields as in medicinal and daily life purposes. Currently, high concerns have been directed to reveal TNPs toxicity in humans. A dietary carotenoid called lycopene, reported as a powerful antioxidant, is suggested to have a protective rule. The aim of this study: is to evaluate the reversibility of TNPs toxicity on the renal cortices of adult male albino rats and to clarify protective role of concomitantly administrated lycopene. Material and methods: Forty-eight adult male albino rats were divided equally into 4 groups;(I, control group) -Ia, rats received only regular diet and water for14 days and Ib, rats that were injected with 1 ml intra-peritoneal (IP) distilled water daily for14 days. (II group): received IP injection of TNPs (300 mg/kg) for14 days. (III group): received 10mg/kg daily lycopene for 7 days by gavage then IP injection of TNPs (300 mg/kg) daily for 14 days together with10mg/kg lycopene by gavage. (IV group): received IP injection of TNPs (300 mg/kg) daily for 14 days followed by another 14 days of balanced diet only without TNPs or lycopene. By the end of the experiment renal cortices specimens were processed for light microscopic, immunohistochemical and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) study. Results: Marked histopathological changes detected in II group were obviously avoided in the III group. While the IV group did not show significant statistical improvement. Objective  This study aimed to ascertain the effects of astaxanthin (ASX) in an experimental necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) model using rat pups. Study Design  Forty-two pups born from five Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups as the control group, NEC + placebo (saline), and NEC + ASX. Pups in the NEC + ASX group were given 100 mg/kg/day oral ASX from day 1 to day 4 of the study. Saline of 2 mL/kg was given to the NEC + placebo group. Histopathological, immunohistochemical (caspase-3), and biochemical evaluations including the total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), lipid hydroperoxide (LPO), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 (Nfr-2) activities were all performed. Results  A better survival rate and weight gain were demonstrated in the NEC + ASX group (p  < 0.05). In the histopathological evaluation, the severity of intestinal damage was significantly reduced in the NEC + ASX group, as well as decreased apoptosis (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] for caspase-3; p  = 0.001). The biochemical analyses of intestinal tissue TOS, oxidative stress index (OSI; TOS/TAS), IL-1β, LPO, 8-OHdG, AOPP, caspase-3 (p  < 0.001 for all), and TNF-α and MPO (p  = 0.001 for both parameters) levels were lower in the NEC + ASX group than in the NEC + placebo group. Nrf-2, TAS, GSH, and SOD levels were higher in the NEC + ASX group than in the NEC + placebo group (p  = 0.001, 0.001, <0.001, and 0.01, respectively). Conclusion  ASX treatment has been shown to effectively reduce the severity of intestinal damage in NEC due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties. There have been growing interests in microalgal biotechnology for the biorefining of bioactive compounds such as carotenoid pigments, ω-3 fatty acids, antioxidants or antimicrobials for sectoral applications in the pharmacology, nutraceutical and cosmetic fields. This study focused on the unicellular marine rhodophyte Porphyridium purpureum CCAP 1380/1 A, which was cultivated via a two-stage batch growth mode for 10 days using hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2), the phytohormone methyl jasmonate (MJ) and three plant extracts (Passiflora incarnata , Panax ginseng and Valeriana officinalis). The microalgal biomass was then analysed for its protein, phycoerythtin, carbohydrate and pigment composition together with its pigment content and antioxidant activity. Of note, MJ increased the protein and phycoerythtin content (up to 225 µg BSA eq./mg DW and 15 mg/ml, respectively) while both the MJ and H 2 O 2 treatments increased carotenoid pigment yields (β-carotene and zeaxanthin, up to 5 and 4 mg/g, respectively). Carbohydrates were enhanced ∼10 fold by the Valeriana officinalis treatment (up 192 μg starch eq./mg). Overall, neutral lipids and antioxidants were mostly negatively affected by the plant extracts. The greatest antioxidant activity registered was obtained with the H 2 O 2 treatment (15 μmol Trolox eq./g DW with TEAC assay). P. purpureum contains multiple valuable compounds of commercial interest. The interest in extracting bioactive compounds from food processing waste is growing unabated. Apricots are widely consumed worldwide, and many tons of waste are produced annually. Therefore, apricot pulp waste (APW) may serve as a rich source of bioactive compounds. In the present study, we investigated the extraction of antioxidant polyphenols and carotenoid pigments from APW. In both cases, a response surface methodology was employed, so as to optimize the extraction parameters. As regards polyphenols, it was found that optimum extraction yield (i.e., 28.6 mg gallic acid equivalents per g of dry weight) was achieved using a deep eutectic solvent (comprised of glycerol, citric acid, and L-proline at a molar ratio of 2:1:1), a liquid-to-solid ratio of 100 mL/g, and heating at 80 °C for 155 min. Similarly, optimum extraction of carotenoids (171.2 mg β-carotene equivalents per 100 g of dry weight) was achieved by extracting APW with an n-hexane: acetone: ethanol (2:1:1, v/v/v) mixture at 47 °C for 60 min. Consumption of potatoes is quite high compared to other vegetables due to preparation in diversified ways, low cost and easy availability; hence, organic potatoes can have a direct positive effect on health. Present investigation aimed at comparing the nutritional and processing quality, sensory acceptability and tuber yield of twelve Indian potato varieties raised under organic and inorganic farming systems. The results indicated improvement in some nutritional quality traits. This is the first report on the effect of cultivation method on biguanide and related compounds (antidiabetic compounds). Antidiabetic compounds were reported to be more in inorganic potatoes (0.73 mg/g FW) than organic ones (0.59 mg/g FW). Total carotenoids were 23% higher in organic tubers, anthocyanin was comparatively more, whereas total phenols were lower in organic tubers as compared to the inorganic ones. Protein (17%) and amino acids (23%) were lower in organic tubers. Reducing sugars, a major concern for processors, were 14% lower in organic potatoes, thus making them more suitable for processing. Sucrose, an indicator of storability, was 15% lower in organic potatoes. Organic cultivation enhanced the overall acceptability of six potato varieties. Background: Preliminary work by our center has reported behavior and functional benefits in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) following targeted micronutritional supplementation.Objective: To build on the existing exploratory research and investigate the impact of these micronutrients on the natural progression of AD in a randomized controlled trial.Methods: Patients with mild-moderate AD consumed daily 1 g fish oil (of which 500 mg DHA, 150 mg EPA), 22 mg carotenoids (10 mg lutein, 10 mg meso-zeaxanthin, 2 mg zeaxanthin), and 15 mg vitamin E or placebo for 12 months in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial. Carotenoids, ω-3FAs, and vitamin E were quantified in blood. Carotenoids were also measured in skin. AD severity was measured using the mini-mental state examination and dementia severity rating scale tools. Behavior, mood, and memory were measured using an informant-based questionnaire.Results: Following 12 months of supplementation, the active group (n = 50) compared to the placebo group (n = 27), demonstrated statistically significant improvements in skin carotenoid measurements, blood carotenoids, ω-3FAs, and vitamin E concentrations (p < 0.05, for all). The active group also performed better in objective measures of AD severity (i.e., memory and mood), with a statistically significant difference reported in the clinical collateral for memory (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Exponential increases in the prevalence of AD and its relentless progressive nature is driving the need for interventions that help to ameliorate symptoms and improve quality of life in AD patients. Research on the morphophysiological behavior of forest seeds during germination with respect to climate change is scarce. To date, there have been no studies on the biochemical or morphological aspects of Ormosia spp. In this study, we subjected Ormosia coarctata seeds to various temperature conditions to investigate temperature-dependent impacts on morphology, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, antioxidant systems, and storage systems. Analyses were performed on seeds exposed to 25, 35, and 40 °C for 48, 96, and 144 h. The morphology was evaluated by radiation using a Faxitron MX-20 device. ROS production (superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide), malonaldehyde (MDA), carbonylated proteins, antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase [SOD], ascorbate peroxidase [APX], catalase [CAT], and peroxidase [POX]), β-carotene, lycopene, glucose, and reserve enzyme activity (α- and β-amylase, lipase, and protease) were analyzed by spectrophotometry. Heat stress (40 °C) decreased germination by 76.2% and 78.1% (compared to 25 and 35 °C, respectively), caused damage to the external morphology of the seed, increased the content of ROS, MDA, and carbonylated proteins, and reduced APX, CAT, and POX activity. Furthermore, heat stress decreased glucose content and α-amylase activity. The Peelu (Salvadora oleoides Decne.) fruit is well known for its nutritional and medicinal values. The current study analyzed the chemical composition of Salvadora oleoides fruit. Fresh Peelu fruits were harvested, and physicochemical properties, proximate composition, macro- and micronutrients, and phytochemical properties were determined. Moreover, ethanol and methanol fruit extract was analyzed for physicochemical properties. The Peelu fruit seemed to be a potential source of essential macro- ((nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg)) and micronutrients (zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu)). The fruit had significant biochemical properties (total soluble solids (TSS), total acidity (TA), and TSS : TA ratio) with appreciable moisture, crude fiber, and ash contents. The fruit extracts demonstrated significantly higher antioxidants and phenolics, ascorbic acid contents, and carotenoids. Phytochemical screening of fruit revealed the presence of coumarins, flavonoids, phlobatannins, tannins, and terpenoids. Physicochemical and sensory evaluation of extracts indicated its potential for further in vivo study trials. The Peelu fruit was found to be a good source of mineral nutrients, proximate contents, vitamins (ascorbic acid and carotenoid), phytochemicals (total phenolic sand antioxidant contents), and pharmaceutically important metabolites that can be used as functional drink. Caprifig is a valuable candidate for fig breeding programs as it typically grows naturally under nonoptimal conditions. The present study was carried out to evaluate the biochemical/morphological characteristics of 18 caprifig cultivars indigenous to the Darab region/southern Iran with 4 replications in a completely randomized block design. From each cultivar, healthy uniform leaf samples and spring fruits were taken and analyzed. Our results showed that 'Naneghasem' had the highest leaf atocopherol and polyphenol concentration. The highest leaf ascorbic acid concentration was obtained from the Gol Khengi cultivar (17.03 µg g1 fresh weight). Also, the contents of chlorophyll, carotenoids, and anthocyanins were significantly different among the studied cultivars. Various cultivars had different absorption potentials for essential elements as macro and micronutrients concentration in the leaves were statistically different in various caprifigs; 'Naneghasem' had the highest Ca (4.46 mg g1 dry weight) and Fe (67.71 mg kg1 dry weight) concentration and the highest leaf K concentration (22.46 mg g1 dry weight) was observed in 'Mahali Layzengan'. In conclusion, 'Naneghasem' was evaluated as a cultivar which seems to be more morphologicallyand biochemicallydistant from other studied caprifig varieties and probably more adaptable/tolerant to environmental conditions. Biochemical and mineral peculiarities of plants inhabiting desert and semi-desert areas may provide important information about the mechanism of their adaptability and reveal the prospects of their utilization. Rheum tataricum L., known for its high tolerance to drought, salinity, and nutritional deficiency, is the least studied species of wild rhubarb. Using biochemical and ICP-MS analysis, the antioxidant status and mineral composition of R. tataricum were determined. Extremely high levels of antioxidant activity (148-155 mg GAE g-1 d.w.), polyphenols (24.6-25.1 mg GAE g-1 d.w.) and carotenoids (1.94 mg-eq β-carotene g-1 d.w.) were revealed in roots, proline in leaves (71.1 ± 6.2 mg kg-1 d.w.) and malic acid in stems (3.40 ± 0.50 mg g-1 d.w.). Compared to garden rhubarb, R. tataricum demonstrated significant root-leaves translocation of Li, Se, Si, and Mo, known to participate in plant antioxidant defense. Under high levels of Ca, Na, Mg, Fe, Cr and Si in soil, R. tataricum demonstrated the ability to significantly increase the accumulation of these elements in roots, showing a hyperaccumulation ability for Sr. The first broad picture of R. tataricum biochemical and mineral characteristics in semi-desert habitat and its nutritional value indicate the prospects of R. tataricum utilization in plant breeding, medicine, and nutrition. The most common preservation process for chili peppers is drying, which inevitably causes oxidative degradation of thermolabile molecules. The aim of this research was to evaluate the potential protective effect exerted by an active ingredient based on grape seed oil, on pepper fruits. Grapeseed oil is rich in antioxidant compounds and was applied to pepper's surface in form of a sol–gel product, before fruit thermal treatment. In this work, chili peppers samples were preventively treated with an active solution, and controls (untreated peppers), were submitted to a drying process performed at two different temperatures: 45 and 65 °C. Analysis of capsaicinoids, carotenoids, apocarotenoids, and phenolic content was performed to evaluate possible differences between the sets of samples. Oxidative stability of oil enriched with chili pepper powder aliquots was also measured to evaluate the antioxidant power of the samples. Obtained data showed that treated samples retained a higher amount of capsaicinoids and carotenoids. Oxidative stability of pepper powder was also higher for treated samples than for controls. Furthermore, the thermal treatment performed at 45 °C caused milder modifications than the 65 °C treatment. Beneficial endophytes may enhance plant growth and stress tolerance. Yet, the plant health benefits of endophytes can be altered by biotic and abiotic factors and, thus, favour the inhibition of turmeric growth and curcumin production. The double petri dish method and greenhouse pot experiments were conducted to assess the biocontrol potential and impact of endophytes on the output, curcumin levels, and antioxidant activities of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). The results showed that endophytes could control some disease-causing plant pathogens: 52% of all isolates have an antagonistic action against Fusarium oxysporum, 43% against Pythium myriotylum, 35% against Phytophthora megakarya, and 56% against Ralstonia solanacearum in vitro. Eight months after sowing, most endophyte isolates can increase the yield of turmeric rhizomes on a sterile substrate after inoculation, with yields ranging from 42 to 105% higher than the control and 3 to 50% higher than the urea treatment. In addition, 52% endophytes isolate significantly raised curcumin levels after 8 months of culture (from 2.1 to 3.1%) compared to control (1.7%) and urea treatment (1.8%). These endophytes promote an increase in the levels of reduced glutathione (22%), total thiols (26%), and carotenoids (91%) in turmeric. The study concludes that, in general, the endophytes-turmeric association can stimulate turmeric rhizome production, curcumin, and the antioxidant activities of the plant. Introduction: Carotenoids are liposoluble plant pigments. The most common in the human diet are α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Methods: This article provides an overview of the findings on carotenoids to date, their depots in body, recommended daily doses and mechanisms of protective action. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, SCIndex, Dimension, Scopus and Google for English and Serbian language abstracts, using the searching terms „carotenoids”, „provitamin A”, „antioxidants”, „cardiotoxcity”, „prevention” and „NADES”. Topic: After being metabolised in intestinal mucosa (with the help of bile acids) and absorbed, carotenoids are mainly stored in the liver and adipose tissue. Major impact on carotenoids bioavailability is the nature of matrix/medium in which they are dissolved. The latest generation of non-toxic „green” solvents, the so-called NADES (natural deep eutectic solvents) are in special focus of research today. Lycopene has been confirmed to improve sperm efficiency, raising incidence of pregnancy. Regarding cardiovascular diseases, trans forms inhibit process of atherosclerosis, most likely by increasing HDL levels. Low serum β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin concentrations is associated with increased mortality from heart diseases, but also stroke. Carotenoids also can cause apoptosis in TE1 cells of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. The recommended daily doses are still not standardized, due to lack of studies performed. A group of provitamin A carotenoids, when converted to vitamin A, participate in the regulation of vision and prevention of eye diseases (xerophthalmia, macular degeneration, night blindness, ulcerations, scars). They are also associated with potential influences on reproduction, embryogenesis, immune system, intracellular connections as well as metabolic pathways. Studies indicate their influence in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, but also various malignancies. Conclusion: The literature data so far has indicated that carotenoids are a good choice in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, however, they are still insufficiently researched to deffine preventive and/or therapeutic doses.
