International audience; La fouille archéologique conduite en 2017 à proximité de l’abbaye Saint-Victor à Marseille a permis de mettre au jour un site d’extraction de calcaire exploité à plusieurs reprises entre le Ve siècle avant notre ère et les premiers siècles de notre ère. Trois périodes d’exploitation ont pu être identifiées avec des productions et des techniques qui leur sont propres. Durant la période grecque archaïque, les productions apparaissent variées (cuves de sarcophages, dalles, bases de pressoirs…), tandis qu’aux périodes hellénistique et romaine, seuls des matériaux de construction ont été extraits : blocs de grand appareil, puis moellons. Les traces d’outils conservées dans la pierre montrent que si les techniques mises en œuvre demeurent globalement similaires avec un détourage des blocs à l’escoude, puis l’utilisation de coins métalliques pour les désolidariser du rocher, des outils spécifiques sont utilisés durant chaque phase d’exploitation.
