Migraine is an episodic disease characterized by a throbbing and generally unilateral headache, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and light and sound sensitivity. Migraine is known to affect one's quality of life; not only the person with migraine but also his/her family and social environment are affected by this condition. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of maternal migraine on children's quality of life. The patient group comprised 70 mothers with migraine diagnoses and their 111 healthy children, while 50 healthy mothers and their 86 children were included in this study as the control group. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Migraine Disability Assessment Scale, Beck Depression Index (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Index (BAI) were used for evaluation of mothers; 3 to 7-year old KINDL and 7- to 17-year-old KINDL-R Quality of Life Scales were used to evaluate the quality of life of children. The SPSS 21.0 program was used for statistical analysis and p < 0.05 was assumed to be statistically significant. The mean age of the migraine group was 37.09 ± 6.94 years, and the mean age of the control group was 38.2 ± 4.5. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were more frequently found in subjects with migraine (p < 0.05). In comparison with the control group: 3 to 7-year old KINDL total scores, self-esteem and school subscales, 7- to 17-year-old KINDL total scores, self-esteem and the social relationships subscale scores were lower in migraine group. It was found to be significant that VAS, BDI and BAI scores of the mothers were negatively correlated with the children's quality of life. Our study concluded that the presence of migraine-type headache in mothers worsen the relations in school, self-esteem and quality of life in younger children and social relations, relations in school and quality of life in older children. The maternal age, disease severity, and anxiety and depression symptoms were shown to predict the quality of life in children. Performing preventive interventions by individually assessing bio-psycho-social elements for the treatment of mothers with migraine will preserve other family member's and especially children's quality of life.

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety disorders are commonly seen in the field of child psychiatry. Childhood ADHD and anxiety disorders are comorbid with an estimated rate of 13% to 50%. In this study, it was aimed to research anxiety symptoms and its relation with ADHD symptoms in children with ADHD. Method: Fifty children with ADHD and 49 healthy controls (aged 8-15 years) who do not have any psychiatric diagnosis were included in study. We used socio-demographic information form, Conners' Teacher Rating Scale (CTRS), Child Behavior Checklist for 4-18 years (CBCL), The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) both parent and child report for assessing these children. The diagnosis were made with Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). Results: The anxiety disorders comorbidity rate was 24% in ADHD group. The total scores of SCARED parent and children reports were higher in ADHD group. SCARED children report scores were higher than SCARED parent report scores in both groups. Discussion: Our results agree with the previously reported common anxiety comorbidity with ADHD and the association between attention deficit symptoms and anxiety symptoms. In our study, parents reported fewer anxiety symptoms in their children than children's self reports. Clinicians should evaluate anxiety symptoms carefully in children with ADHD that could be unnoticed by their parents. The treatment should be determined according to the comorbidities. Objective: Day surgery distinguishes from major surgery with the low risk of complications and short healing time after the intervention. Children's and their mothers' anxiety levels increase and children's quality of life diminishes after major surgeries. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anxiety levels of the children and their mothers', and the children's quality of life before and one month after the day surgery. Method: In our study, 32 children (6 girls, 26 boys) aged 7-12 years who were hospitalized for day surgery in Children Surgery Clinic of Sakarya University Training and Research Hospital constituted the sample group. Before the day surgery, Childhood Behavior Checklist; before and one month after the day surgery, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), State and Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAI-C), and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL>parent report were completed. Results: There was not any significant difference between the scores of STAI, STAI-C, PedsQL total scale and PedsQL physical health summary before the day surgery and one month after the day surgery. The psychosocial health summary score (PSS) before the day surgery was found to be higher than the PSS one month after the day surgery. STAI total score predicted PSS score. Conclusion: It was revealed that after day surgery, children's psychosocial quality of life deteriorates and it was affected by maternal anxiety level. Therefore, mothers should be informed about the consequences of surgical operation and precautions should be taken to protect the academic skills, peer relationships, and family functioning of children. Objectives: Somatoform disorders in adolescents is a little studied topic. It is hypothesized that maternal attachment style and the family system was associated with the somatic symptoms in children and adolescents. In this study, it's aimed to examine the anxiety level of adolescents with the diagnosis of somatoform disorders, anxiety level and attachment style of their mothers and their family functioning. Method: 33 adolescents with the diagnosis of somatoform disorders were compared with 28 age matched adolescents without any diagnosis of mental disorders. Adult Attachment Scale, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, Family Assessment Device, and Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders was used to obtain data from the participants. Results: In our study, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age and gender. In Adult Attachment Scale, maternal avoidant attachment scores of adolescents diagnosed as somatoform disorders was higher than the control group. While maternal reports of Family Assessment Device indicated that the index group had higher scores in roles, affective responsiveness, behavior control, and affective involvement subscales, child reports implied no difference between the groups. Anxiety levels of adolescents and maternal anxiety levels was higher in the index group. Conclusion: It's known that adolescents diagnosed with somatoform disorders have poor skills in coping with stress and inconvenient responses to life events. Being anxious and having anxious mothers, deterioration in family functioning and maternal avoidant attachment style may contribute to the formation of somatoform disorders by effecting the responses of the adolescents.
