Objectives: Perceived control is a relevant variable for understanding middle and older adults' mental health. The Perceived Control Scale has two dimensions, Perceived Constraints on Personal Control and Perceived Mastery, and is a widely used instrument for assessing perceived control in adults. The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Perceived Control Scale with data from two different studies., Method: In Study 1, 348 older adults between 60 and 92 years old were assessed through face-to-face assessments. In Study 2, 334 adults between 40 and 90 years completed an online survey. Perceived control, self-perceptions of aging, and anxiety and depressive symptomatology were assessed. An exploratory (Study 1) and confirmatory (Study 2) factor analysis of the Perceived Control Scale were performed, and reliability and its relationship with the other assessed variables were evaluated., Results: Results from parallel, exploratory, and confirmatory factor analyses suggested that the Spanish version of the Perceived Control Scale has a bidimensional structure: Perceived Constraints on Personal Control and Perceived Mastery. Good internal consistency was found for the scale in both samples. The results revealed negative and significant associations with negative self-perceptions of aging, and anxiety and depressive symptomatology., Conclusion: The Spanish version of the Perceived Control Scale shows good psychometric properties which endorse its use with middle-aged and older adults assessed either face-to-face or through online surveys.

Objectives: Behavioral problems in people with dementia are a source of depression and anxiety for caregivers, who experience high levels of sleep problems. The present study aims to explore the role of sleep problems on the relationship between behavioral problems associated with dementias - considering its different dimensions - and family caregivers' depressive and anxious symptoms., Method: 264 family caregivers participated in the study. Through face-to-face interviews, sociodemographic and health variables, caregivers' depressive and anxious symptoms were measured, as well as their sleep problems. Data related to people with dementia symptoms and their level of independence in daily life activities were also collected. Data analysis consisted of simple mediational models using the PROCESS method for SPSS., Results: the test for the indirect effect of disruptive behaviors on depression through sleep problems was statistically significant, as it was for disruptive behaviors on anxiety through sleep problems. The effect of sleep problems in the association between depressive and memory problems in the person with dementia, and caregivers' depression and anxiety were not statistically significant., Conclusions: Sleep problems are significantly and positively associated with care-recipients' disruptive behaviors, but not with depressive and memory problems. The indirect effect of disruptive behaviors on caregivers' mood through sleep problems suggests that disruptive behaviors seem to play an important role for understanding caregivers' sleep problems.

Comorbid depression and anxiety is linked to worse outcomes such as increased impairment, distress, and morbidity, as well as worse treatment outcomes. Transdiagnostic variables such as cognitive fusion are considered potential factors for explaining comorbidity. The aim of this study was to analyze the differences between symptom profiles of caregivers (comorbid, depressive, anxiety, and subclinical) in terms of demographic and contextual factors, stress variables, and cognitive fusion. Individual interviews were conducted with 553 caregivers of a relative with dementia. Sociodemographic variables, stressors, cognitive fusion, and depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed. Caregivers were grouped into four symptom profiles, comorbid (n = 303), depressed (n = 40) anxiety (n = 86), and subclinical (n = 124), based on their depressive and anxiety symptoms. The likelihood of presenting a comorbid profile relative to the subclinical profile was higher in female caregivers. In addition, higher frequency of disruptive behaviors of the care recipient was a risk factor for presenting a comorbid profile relative to the other three profiles, and higher scores in cognitive fusion were a risk factor of comorbidity relative to the other profiles (anxiety, depressive, and subclinical). The findings suggest that the likelihood of presenting comorbid symptomatology is higher for female caregivers and those reporting higher levels of cognitive fusion and higher frequency of disruptive behaviors. Background: While most intervention studies conducted with dementia family caregivers have focused on depressive symptoms as the main outcome, no study has analyzed the effects of an intervention on comorbid clinical presentations of depressive and anxious symptomatology., Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the association between clinical depressive and anxious symptomatology at baseline and treatment responses of dementia family caregivers using samples from two randomized intervention trials with the same pre-post design., Methods: Specifically, the effects on depressive and anxious comorbidity of three intervention conditions (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and a control group (CG)) were analyzed. Participants were 130 dementia family caregivers. In addition to sociodemographic variables, depressive and anxious symptomatology were measured., Results: Caregivers with clinical depressive and anxiety comorbid symptoms at baseline recovered less well from depressive symptoms after CBT (45.45%) and ACT (47.72%) interventions than caregivers with non-comorbidity (100% recovery in both treatments). No significant association between comorbidity and treatment responses on depression was found for the control group. Regarding anxiety, among participants with comorbidity at baseline, 36.36% of caregivers in CBT and 30.9 % in the ACT group recovered from anxiety symptoms after treatment, compared to 6.45% in the control group. Similar results were obtained regarding those caregivers who recovered both from clinical depressive and anxiety symptoms and showed comorbidity at baseline., Conclusion: Caregivers that show comorbid depressive and anxiety symptoms at baseline may benefit less from interventions than caregivers who do not show comorbidity.

Objectives: To analyze differences by age group in anxiety, depression, loneliness and comorbid anxiety and depression in young people, middle aged adults and older adults during the lock-down period at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to explore the association between negative self-perceptions of aging and psychological symptoms controlling by age group., Method: Participants are 1501 people (age range 18 to 88 years). Anxiety, sadness, loneliness and self-perceptions of aging were assessed. The sample was divided according to the age group and quartiles (lower, intermediate levels, and higher) of anxiety, sadness, loneliness and self-perceptions of aging., Results: Older adults reported lower levels of anxiety and sadness than middle aged adults, and middle aged adults reported lower levels than younger participants. Middle aged adults reported the lowest loneliness, followed by older adults and younger participants. For each age group, those with more negative self-perceptions of aging reported higher anxiety, sadness and loneliness. More comorbid anxiety and sadness was found in younger adults and less in older adults; more depressed participants in the middle aged group, and more older adults and less younger participants were found in the group with the lowest levels of anxiety and sadness. For all the age groups, participants with high levels of comorbid anxiety and sadness are those who report the highest scores in negative self-perceptions of aging., Conclusions: Older adults reported lower psychological anxiety, sadness and loneliness than the other age groups. The aim of this study is an in-depth approach to depressive-anxious comorbidity in caregivers according to stress reactivity to disruptive behaviors using network analysis. The sample was composed of 317 primary family caregivers recruited through Day Care Centers and Neurology Services. The sample was split into low and high stress reactivity groups, based on their reports of reaction to disruptive behaviors. Depressive and anxious symptoms, daily hours dedicated to caregiving, time of caring, frequency of disruptive behaviors, co-residence, and kinship were also cross-sectionally measured. The sample had a mean age of 62.38 years (SD = 12.97) and 68.5% were women. Regarding the network analysis, while the low reactivity group presents a sparse network, with no connection between anxious and depressive symptoms, the high reactivity group shows a high connection of intra and intercategory symptoms, with apathy, sadness, feeling depressed, and tension being the bridge symptoms between disorders. Caregivers' stress reaction to disruptive behaviors might be a key factor for understanding comorbidity between depressive and anxious symptoms. Tension, apathy, sadness, and feeling depressed should be clinical targets in the interventions, as they act as bridge symptoms between anxious and depressive symptomatology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study was to analyze the role of aging stereotype activation (when older adults with aging stereotypes begin to consider themselves as older persons) in the relationship between ageist stereotypes, depressive, anxiety, loneliness, and comorbid anxiety-depressive symptoms. Participants were 182 autonomous community-dwelling people between 60 and 88 (mean age = 72.30; SD = 5.53). Three path models were tested exploring the role of considering oneself as an older person as a moderator variable. Ageist stereotypes were included as the independent variable, loneliness as the mediating variable, and anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and comorbid anxiety-depressive symptoms as dependent variables for each model. The results suggest an influence of ageist stereotypes on anxiety, depressive, and comorbid anxiety-depressive symptoms only in older adults who consider themselves as older persons, and mediated by loneliness. This study suggests that, when someone considers him or herself as an older person, ageist stereotypes activate loneliness feelings, and this activation is associated with psychological distress, including anxiety, depressive, and comorbid anxiety-depressive symptoms. The study assessed gender differences in the associations between familism dimensions, dysfunctional thoughts, and resource and outcome variables in 190 Spanish dementia family caregivers. A theoretical model was tested through path analysis, obtaining an excellent fit of the model to the data. Higher scores in the familial obligations dimension were associated with lower self-efficacy for self-care and obtaining respite and leisure frequency, and higher anxious and depressive feelings, in female caregivers only. Significant between-gender differences were obtained, suggesting that female caregivers holding strong familistic values are more vulnerable to the negative consequences of caregiving compared to male caregivers. Objectives: cognitive fusion (the tendency towards behavior that is overly regulated and influenced by cognition) and dissatisfaction with personal values are central processes of psychological inflexibility and are related to distress. Being cognitively fused may interfere with achieving satisfaction from personal values. This study analyzed the role of satisfaction with the value of caregiving and other personal values (e.g. personal growth) in the relationship between cognitive fusion and caregivers' distress.Method: a total of 287 dementia family caregivers participated in this quantitative study carried out in Madrid, Spain, from January 2016 to February 2020. We measured sociodemographic and stressor variables, cognitive fusion, caregivers' satisfaction with values and depressive and anxiety symptoms. The indirect effect of cognitive fusion on distress through caregivers' satisfaction with caregiving value and with other personal values was tested. Four hierarchical regression models were analyzed: the role of satisfaction with the caregiving value in the association between cognitive fusion and depressive (Model 1a) and anxiety (Model 1b) symptoms; and the role of satisfaction with other personal values in the association between cognitive fusion and depressive (Model 2a) and anxiety (Model 2b) symptoms.Results: the results showed an indirect effect of cognitive fusion on both depressive and anxiety symptoms only through satisfaction with other personal values. Those reporting higher cognitive fusion reported lower satisfaction with other personal values, and this association was related to higher scores in depressive and anxiety symptoms (Models 2a and 2b).Conclusion: cognitive fusion could be a variable that interferes in obtaining satisfaction from personal values, something that increases caregivers' distress. Family dementia caregiving has been commonly associated with psychological distress for caregivers. Cognitive fusion, that is, the tendency to become too entangled in thoughts, beliefs, or judgments (in the absence of objectivity) that may often lead to rigid thinking and impact psychological distress, is a transdiagnostic and central process of psychological inflexibility. Cross-sectional studies have shown that family caregivers of people with dementia who could present high levels of stress may be vulnerable to experiencing psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety (even comorbidity) if they present this rigid way of thinking without seeing the objectivity of their thoughts, which could be related to aspects of the family member's dementia or helplessness in being a caregiver, for example. Specifically, studies in the caregiving field, as well as in other populations, suggest that cognitive fusion could play a mediating role in the relationship between stress and psychological symptoms. However, the predictive role of caregivers' cognitive fusion on psychological distress has not been analyzed in longitudinal studies. The objective of this study was to analyze the longitudinal effect of cognitive fusion in depressive and anxious symptoms after controlling for other relevant variables in a sample of Spanish family caregivers. Face to face assessments were conducted with a total of 176 Spanish family dementia caregivers. The study involved three assessments in a two-year period (baseline, 12 and 24 months). Linear mixed model analysis was used to analyze the associations between time-varying values of frequency and reaction to care-recipient behavioral problems, cognitive fusion, and caregivers' depressive and anxiety symptoms. Increases in cognitive fusion significantly predicted depressive and anxious symptoms (p < 0.01). In addition, reaction to care-recipients' behavioral problems and being a female caregiver predicted increases in anxiety symptoms over time (p < 0.05). These results suggested that cognitive fusion may constitute a core dysfunctional mechanism involved in depressive and anxious symptoms. The aim of the present study was to analyze the efficacy of an individualized intervention that trains caregivers of family members with dementia in behavioral skills to assess and modify their relative’s resistance to attending an adult day care center (ADC). Three caregivers were trained in assessment techniques for registering the behaviors related to resistance to attending the ADC, behavioral techniques for modifying antecedents and consequences of the behaviors, and implementation of those techniques. The frequency of behaviors was recorded every day. Caregivers’ depressive symptomatology and anxiety, and occurrence of care recipients’ behavioral problems related to attending the ADC, were assessed. After the intervention, frequency of behavioral problems decreased for all people with dementia, anxiety decreased for two caregivers, and depression decreased clinically for two caregivers. Summary Caregiving for a family member with dementia is a stressful situation that has been associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Several models have highlighted the role of hyperarousal for understanding sleep disorders; however, there is little evidence about how insomnia, depression, and anxiety are linked together. Network analysis could help to explore the mechanisms underlying the associations between these disorders. A total of 368 community‐dwelling family caregivers of a person with dementia took part in the study. The depression–anxiety–sleep symptoms network was composed of 26 items using the R package qgraph to estimate and visualise the network. The results showed that the strongest symptoms in the network were shakiness, tension, restlessness, nervousness, and restless sleep. Tension was the symptom with the most predictive power, restless sleep was the most important shortcut node in the connection between other symptoms. The central stability coefficient showed adequate indices. The strength of hyperarousal symptoms suggested a prominent role of this variable. Our results invite the hypothesis that sleep problems may trigger symptoms specific to depression via fatigue or energy loss. This study is the first to examine the network structure of the associations between the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia in a sample of informal caregivers, and to explore the role of hyperarousal in this network. The COVID-19 pandemic added a new stress source for caregivers. Many aspects influence the potential depressive or anxiety symptomatology in caregivers. This study explored the association among COVID-19 related stressors, insomnia, leisure, and caregivers’ depression and anxiety. 101 family caregivers of people with dementia were asked about COVID-19 related stressors, insomnia, leisure, depression and anxiety symptoms. Four regression models with caregivers’ depression and anxiety symptoms as dependent variables were tested. Four potential mediation models were investigated. Two of them had insomnia as the independent variable and leisure as a mediator, and the other two had leisure as the independent variable and insomnia as a mediator. Regression models accounted for 48% and 40.6% of the variance in depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively. The four mediator models were statistically significant. Findings suggest two potential mechanisms affecting caregivers’ distress during the pandemic. Insomnia and leisure significantly contributed to explain caregivers’ anxiety and depressive symptoms, even after controlling for COVID-19 related stressors. Provision of resources to increase the chances of caregivers engaging in leisure activities, alongside a reduction of barriers potentially limiting good sleep, may contribute significantly to improving the depression and anxiety symptoms of family caregivers.
