The 3-D ultrasound (US) imaging addresses the limitation in field-of-view (FOV) in conventional 2-D US imaging by providing 3-D viewing of the anatomy. The 3-D US imaging has been extensively adapted for diagnosis and image-guided surgical intervention. However, conventional approaches to implement 3-D US imaging require either expensive and sophisticated 2-D array transducers or external actuation mechanisms to move a 1-D array mechanically. Here, we propose a 3-D US imaging mechanism using an actuated acoustic reflector instead of the sensor elements for volume acquisition with significantly extended 3-D FOV, which can be implemented with simple hardware and compact size. To improve image quality on the elevation plane, we implemented the synthetic aperture focusing (SAF) method according to the diagonal geometry of the virtual element array in the proposed imaging mechanism for elevation beamforming. We first evaluated the proposed imaging mechanism and SAF with simulated point targets and cyst targets. The results of point targets suggested improved image quality on the elevation plane, and the results of cysts targets demonstrated a potential to improve 3-D visualization of human anatomy. We built a prototype imaging system with a 3-D FOV of 38 mm (lateral) by 38 mm (elevation) by 50 mm (axial) and collected data in imaging experiments with phantoms. Experimental data showed consistency with simulation results. The SAF method enhanced quantifying the cyst volume size in the breast mimicking phantom compared with no elevation beamforming. This article proposes a new synthetic aperture radar (SAR), named as panoramic SAR, based on a combination of linear and rotational SARs, by which a large 360° panoramic view of the observed scene can be reconstructed. First, the system geometry and its imaging process based on the back-projection algorithm (BPA) are presented. The combined movement constitutes a 2-D synthetic aperture, and thus higher imaging resolutions can be obtained. The corresponding resolution analysis and the sampling criteria are discussed accordingly. Then, a novel dynamic piecewise compensation (DPC) algorithm, a recursive imaging process, is proposed to reduce the processing complexity significantly. The imaging implementation and the complexity are also studied respectively. Finally, a prototype of panoramic SAR is built based on an frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar and a moving platform, and the simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the proposed panoramic SAR principle and the DPC algorithm. High-frequency endoscopic ultrasound (HFEUS) imaging is an important tool commonly used in clinical practice for imaging hollow organs. The virtual source synthetic aperture (VSSA) method is effective in improving the imaging quality of HFEUS. However, interference from the motor control unit severely affects the accuracy of the conventional delay and sum (DAS) method, thus compromising the effectiveness of VSSA. In this article, a new computational method based on phase correction was proposed to overcome these shortcomings, which is named phase-corrected-and-sum (PCAS). Meanwhile, the parameters of coherence factor weighting (CFW) can be obtained from the correlation coefficient of the superimposed signals to further increase the imaging quality. Three kinds of imaging experiments were designed to evaluate the proposed method. Compared with the conventional method, the results show that the PCAS-CFW method improves the lateral resolution by about 10% and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) by about 44%. Therefore, this proposed method is capable of significantly improving HFEUS image quality, and this method can be easily integrated into current HFEUS imaging systems, showing great potential for clinical applications. A 3-D synthetic transmit aperture ultrasound imaging system with a fully addressed array usually leads to high hardware complexity and cost since each element in the array is individually controlled. To reduce the hardware complexity, we had presented the large-pitch synthetic transmit aperture (LPSTA) ultrasound imaging for 2-D imaging using a 1-D phased array to reduce the number of measurement channels M (the product of number of transmissions, IT, and the number of receiving channels in each transmission, IR). In this article, we extend this method to a 2-D matrix array for 3-D imaging. We present both numerical simulations and experimental measurements. We combined L × L adjacent elements into transmission subapertures (SAP) and K × K adjacent elements into receive SAPs in synthetic transmit aperture (STA) imaging. In the image reconstruction, we conducted the first attempt to apply and integrate Gaussian-approximated spatial response function (G-SRF) with delay and sum (DAS) to improve the image contrast, especially for the near-field targets. The imaging performance obtained from G-SRF was also evaluated numerically and compared with the previously presented frequency-domain SRF (Freq-domain SRF). The 3-D large-pitch synthetic transmit aperture (3-D-LPSTA) with G-SRF can provide a computationally efficient solution compared with the standard 3-D-STA method. With approximately 1900-fold reduction in the number of measurement channels, 3-D-LPSTA can provide image contrast comparable with the standard 3-D-STA with a full array and significantly better than using a periodically sparse array with similar complexity. In addition to reducing the system complexity, the 3-D-LPSTA achieves 700-fold reduction in computational complexity and 523-fold reduction in data storage. Finally, we evaluated and implemented the G-SRF using phantom data, which were consistent with the simulation results showing that the G-SRF can improve the image contrast. The results demonstrate that the proposed 3-D-LPSTA shows the great potential for designing an inexpensive ultrasound system to ensure the real-time 3-D clinical ultrasound imaging using large arrays. A fast synthetic aperture (SA) focusing algorithm is proposed in this article to overcome the problem of huge computational complexity in developing high-performance SA ultrasound imaging systems. The proposed method realizes the fast focusing of SA imaging by utilizing a virtual array (VA) technique in combination with nonuniform fast Fourier transform (VA-NUFFT) method. The computational performance of the VA-NUFFT algorithm is evaluated with the computational complexity under acceptable beam errors, compared with the conventional delay-and-sum (DAS) method and the frequency-domain direct method (DM), as well as a multiple NUFFT (M-NUFFT) method. Simulation results reveal that under a beam error level less than −57.4 dB, 25 and 10 reduction ratios of entire real operations can be achieved by the VA-NUFFT at larger SA scan lines of 2048, when compared with the DAS and DM, respectively. In the key SA focusing step, i.e., the “spatial process” step, the computational load of VA-NUFFT is lower than two orders of magnitude of that of the DM. SA imaging of a phantom with four cysts is also simulated and a contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) criterion is adopted for evaluation of imaging quality. Synthetic aperture sonar and synthetic aperture radar involve the creation of high-resolution images of a scene via scattered signals recorded at different locations. Each pixel of the reconstructed image includes information obtained from multiple aspects due to the changing position of the sources/receivers. In this paper, the aspect-dependent scattering at each pixel is exploited to provide additional information about the scene; this paper presents a framework for converting and utilizing multiaspect data, as well as several examples. For sonar data, as is presented here, the aspect dependence may be leveraged to separate objects of interest from the background, to understand the local bathymetry, or for visualizing acoustic shadowing in full circular synthetic aperture sonar images. Several examples of images of the seafloor containing objects of interest are presented for both circular and linear apertures. In addition, the aspect dependence of low-frequency elastic scattering from objects may be used to understand the underlying scattering physics, which is of potential use in fields such as target recognition and nondestructive testing; a laboratory example is presented. “Seeing through” occluders is one of the most important effects that can be achieved with synthetic aperture imaging. As well, the occlusion problem, a challenging task for many computer vision applications, can be easily handled. Synthetic aperture imaging takes advantage of the property that only objects on the focal plane are sharp. The resulting image that is obtained by averaging images from different views consists of blurry objects away from the focal plane and sharp objects on the focal plane. Removing the blurriness caused by defocusing in synthetic aperture images to achieve an all-in-focus “seeing through” image is a challenging research problem. In this paper, we propose a novel method to improve the image quality of synthetic aperture imaging using image matting via energy minimization by estimating the foreground and the background. In particular, we first estimate the out-of-focus region by focusing on the background objects in each camera view using energy minimization. Next, we utilize a labeling method to create a sharp “see through” synthetic aperture image of the hidden objects. Then, image matting is used to extract the alpha matte of the hidden objects. Finally, by compositing the hidden objects with the estimated background regions, a sharp “see through” synthetic aperture image is created. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the traditional synthetic aperture imaging method [1] as well as its improved versions [2]–[4], which simply dim and blur the area in the image that is out of focus, and a recent all-in-focus method [5]. Resonant elliptical slot antennas with waveguide feeds were successfully used to implement the microwave imaging systems in the past. For wideband imaging, these slots required tuning circuit components to be incorporated in the array. The bulkiness of the previous feeds and the additional tuning circuits render realizing wideband large imaging arrays practically prohibitive. In this paper, the feeding and bandwidth constrains of the previous elliptical slot designs are addressed. Specifically, a unidirectional wideband substrate-integrated cavity-backed elliptical slot antenna is introduced for imaging applications in the $K$ -band frequency range (18–26.5 GHz). This paper describes the development of a miniaturized high-frequency linear array that can be integrated within a core biopsy needle to improve tissue sampling accuracy during breast cancer biopsy procedures. The 64-element linear array has an element width of 14\ \upmu \textm, kerf width of 6\ \upmu \textm, element length of 1 mm, and element thickness of 24\ \upmu \textm. The 2–2 array composite was fabricated using deep reactive ion etching of lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) single crystal material. The array composite fabrication process as well as a novel high-density electrical interconnect solution are presented and discussed. Array performance measurements show that the array had a center frequency and fractional bandwidth (-6\ \textdB) of 59.1 MHz and 29.4%, respectively. Insertion loss and adjacent element crosstalk at the center frequency were -41.0 and -23.7\;\text{dB}, respectively. A B-mode image of a tungsten wire target phantom was captured using a synthetic aperture imaging system and the imaging test results demonstrate axial and lateral resolutions of 33.2 and 115.6\ \upmu \text{m}$, respectively. Autofocusing synthetic aperture imagery by maximizing a statistical quality metric such as contrast or sharpness is a well-documented approach in both synthetic aperture radar (SAR) literature and synthetic aperture sonar literature. It is most successfully applied in spotlight-mode SAR applications, where the assumption of spatial invariance of the corrupting phase function is strong and expressions for the gradients of various quality metrics with respect to standard error models have been calculated. Examples of application to stripmap imagery often involve sectioning images into small blocks, allowing spotlight algorithms to be patchwise applied. This paper formulates the gradient of the cost function in a manner that is consistent with the stripmap error model, inherently providing solutions that compensate for the spatial variance while simultaneously bypassing the need for subdividing an image or aperture. This paper formulates the stripmap gradient expression in conjunction with a computationally efficient imaging approach to rapidly achieve metric-maximizing solutions. Demonstrations are shown on a widebeam wideband rail-based system experiencing random jitter and on an unmanned-underwater-vehicle-mounted sonar system exhibiting artificially injected crabbing and sway errors. Results indicate that the algorithm is particularly effective at compensating for random and rapidly oscillating navigation and jitter errors, as well as sidelobes introduced by crabbing in arrayed systems. A method for obtaining compound images using synthetic aperture data is investigated using a convex array transducer. The new approach allows spatial compounding to be performed for any number of angles without reducing the frame rate or temporal resolution. This important feature is an intrinsic property of how the compound images are constructed using synthetic aperture data and an improvement compared with how spatial compounding is obtained using conventional methods. The synthetic aperture compound images are created by exploiting the linearity of delay-and-sum beamformation for data collected from multiple spherical emissions to synthesize multiple transmit and receive apertures, corresponding to imaging the tissue from multiple directions. The many images are added incoherently, to produce a single compound image. Using a 192-element, 3.5-MHz, ??-pitch transducer, it is demonstrated from tissue-phantom measurements that the speckle is reduced and the contrast resolution improved when applying synthetic aperture compound imaging. At a depth of 4 cm, the size of the synthesized apertures is optimized for lesion detection based on the speckle information density. This is a performance measure for tissue contrast resolution which quantifies the tradeoff between resolution loss and speckle reduction. The speckle information density is improved by 25% when comparing synthetic aperture compounding to a similar setup for compounding using dynamic receive focusing. The cystic resolution and clutter levels are measured using a wire phantom setup and compared with conventional application of the array, as well as to synthetic aperture imaging without compounding. If the full aperture is used for synthetic aperture compounding, the cystic resolution is improved by 41% compared with conventional imaging, and is at least as good as what can be obtained using synthetic aperture imaging without compounding. It has been demonstrated that short-lag spatial coherence (SLSC) ultrasound imaging can provide improved speckle SNR and lesion CNR compared with conventional Bmode images, especially in the presence of noise and clutter. Application of the van Cittert-Zernike theorem predicts that coherence among the ultrasound echoes received across an array is reduced significantly away from the transmit focal depth, leading to a limited axial depth of field in SLSC images. Transmit focus throughout the field of view can be achieved using synthetic aperture methods to combine multiple transmit events into a single final image. A synthetic aperture can be formed with either focused or diverging transmit beams. We explore the application of these methods to form synthetically focused channel data to create SLSC images with an extended axial depth of field. An analytical expression of SLSC image brightness through depth is derived for the dynamic receive focus case. Experimental results in a phantom and in vivo are presented and compared with dynamic receive focused SLSC images, demonstrating improved SNR and CNR away from the transmit focus and an axial depth of field four to five times longer. High-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) imaging systems are routinely used for medical diagnostics (skin, eyes) and for medical research (small animal imaging). Although systems with array transducers are already commercially available, imaging systems with single-element transducers are still of interest and available as well, because this type of transducer is less complex, less expensive, and technically mature. Nevertheless, drawbacks exist, for example, the need for mechanical scanning units and the limited depth of field. In this paper, we present a high-frequency (20 MHz) ultrasound imaging system equipped with a spherically focused transducer. Limited-angle spatial compounding is utilized to improve the image contrast, to suppress speckle and noise, and to reduce imaging artifacts. To overcome the limitation in depth of field, the system uses a novel synthetic aperture focusing technique based on the correlation of the recorded echo signals with the simulated point spread function of the imaging system. This method results in lower side lobe levels and greater noise reduction compared with delay-and-sum focusing, which is demonstrated by wire phantom measurements. When used in combination with limited-angle spatial compounding, as presented in this paper, the resulting image quality is superior to conventional single-element HFUS imaging systems and to array systems.
