Why do architects seek out philosophy, and how do they do so?An enormous variety of replies to this question have emerged throughout architecture and philosophy’s long history together, especially during the late-twentieth century when their interactions reached the most prolific, intense, radical, innovative, and transformative moment yet. This article analyzes three famous case studies from this period of philosophers’ thinking that influenced architects’ work: Martin Heidegger’s role in several of Kenneth Frampton’s texts, Michel Foucault’s discreet yet ineludible presence in a Rem Koolhaas design, and Jacques Derrida’s collaboration with Peter Eisenman. With their distinct approaches, aims, and outputs, each instance offers unique insights into the immense potentials, as well as the chronic problems, of the relationship between architecture and philosophy, which remains deeply ingrained in both design practice and theoretical discourse to this day.

The thesis advocates that architecture can, as an operative medium, situate freedom. Following the work of Michel Foucault, the thesis develops an argument for an emancipatory endeavor, termed “situated freedom in architecture.” Acknowledging the contingency that can be located within power relations, situated freedom works with the positive and constitutive character of power as it shapes how we can be free (and unfree) in particular situations. To exemplify this approach within architecture practice, the thesis looks at the aesthetic practice of Rem Koolhaas/OMA. The research question asked is: How can architecture, as an aesthetic practice, through its own zone of competence, and by means of a singular, situated project, establish an emancipatory endeavor that is oriented towards enrichment, fulfillment, and joy. In responding to this question, the research analyzes three projects—a private pool (Villa dall’Ava), a media building (China Central Television Headquarters), and a public library (Seattle Public Library)—in three different situations. Through “fabulation” (Deleuze & Guattari) and the use of a “messy method” (Law) the thesis draws on multiple disciplines, such as art, film theory, theatre, architecture, and philosophy. The thesis’s methodology mobilizes a reading of architecture that traces the aesthetic strategies employed in the analyzed projects. Exploring the practice of Koolhaas/OMA offers insights into projective approaches in architecture and situates their work in a new context. The thesis aims to develop an understanding of architecture as an emancipatory endeavor of human wellbeing, enrichment, and joy within the complexity of the present reality. Situated Freedom – Exploring the Aesthetic Practice of Rem Koolhaas/ OMA undersöker hur arkitektur kan situera frihet. Genom att utforska ett antal arkitekturprojekt av Rem Koolhaas/OMA, lyfter avhandlingen både en filosofisk idé och en estetisk praktik kring möjligheten att tänka frihet som handling. Forskningen förhåller sig till tänkandet och fantasin hos Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari och Jacques Rancière. För dessa utgör friheten en möjlighet att utveckla en förståelse av de ögonblick där den politiska och estetiska friheten sammanlänkas. Medan friheter alltid riskerar att missbrukas genom strategier som begränsar frihet, lyfter avhandlingen relevansen i en undersökning av vilka relationer som kan finnas mellan arkitektur och frihet, genom att fråga hur arkitektur som estetisk praktik kan bidra till frihet. Avhandlingens syfte är att bidra till en befintlig kritisk-projektiv debatt inom arkitektur och föreslå en “projektiv praktik” som situerar frihet på faktiska, konkreta och instrumentella sätt inför pågående modernisering. Genomgående i denna forskning är en förståelse av arkitektur som en projektiv, estetisk, diskursiv och affektiv praktik med möjlighet att urholka de affekter som upprätthåller dominerande maktstrukturer. Forskningsarbetet betonar arkitekturens förmåga att skapa förutsättningar för situerad frihet, vilket gör att nya möjligheter kan växa fram. Avhandlingen visar att arkitektur inte kommunicerar enbart genom Swedish Summary 423 språk eller representation, utan också uppstår i samspelet mellan form och innehåll inom programmets arkiektoniska syntazz; organisationen (fördelningen) av rum; tektonik, teknologi och materialitet; det upplevelsemässiga (affektiva); och bilden (och dess imaginära kraft). Med utgångspunkt i dessa idéer undersöker avhandlingen hur arkitektur som estetisk praktik kan främja en emancipatorisk politik, och hur arkitekturens verksamhetsfält kan skapa frihet genom ett singulärt, situerat projekt. Ramverket för denna undersökning utgörs av fyra nyckelbegrepp: situerad frihet, arkitekturens estetiska politik, sammansättning, och fabulering (från montage till montrage). Avhandlingen består av fyra delar. Del 1,”Towards Situated Freedom in Architecture”, introducerar avhandlingens syfte och centrala begrepp samt det teoretiska och metodologiska ramverket. Del 2, ”The Aesthetic Practice of Koolhaas/OMA”, är en analys av Koolhaas/ OMAs estetiska praktik, i syfte att visa hur det politiska begreppet frihet situeras genom ett verk, och hur en sådan praktik kan utgöra ett politiskt projekt. Fyra särskilda strategier är väsentliga för Koolhaas tänkande: diagrammet; situationen; det performativa och transformativa objektskapet i Koolhaas/OMAs projekt, som formas av processer och programmering; och slutligen tanken på flanören. Med hänvisning till Walter Benjamin spelar Koolhaas rollen som modernitetens flanör, dels i sin fascination för moderniseringen, dels i sina observationer och engagemang i densamma. I denna relation söker Koolhaas efter konkreta möjligheter till förändring och frihet inifrån. Begreppet ”assemblage thinking”, tänkande i sammmansätttningar, är ett nyckelbegrepp för hur avhandlingen utforskar arkitektur. Arkitektur, i denna forskning, förstås som handlingar av sammasättning (assemblage), som verkar inom en mångfald av (andra) sammansättningar. Istället för en organisk helhet där alla delar utgör en autonom helhet, är arkitektur som sammansättning, en situerande praktik. Arkitekturen kan förstås genom det inflytande den utövar, som ett evenemangsrum och som struktureringsstil (mening). Ett sådant tänkande i sammansättningar möjliggör en transformativ potential i den materiella upplevelsen av rum. För att utforska arkitekturens estetiska uttryck och vad dessa innebär 424 Sammanfattning på svenska i Koolhaas/OMAs praktik, är Deleuzes begrepp “fabulering”, här definierat som en specifik form av narrativ eller berättande, väsentligt för forskningsprojektet. ”Fabulering” gör det möjligt att omvandla konventionella föreställningar om kollektivitet, vilket i sin tur kan möjliggöra nya konstellationer av människor. Detta sker genom utforskande av alternativa existenssätt och nya livsmöjligheter, genom ifrågasät av de kategorier vi lever efter, genom en avfixering av identiteter och genom omvandlingsprocesser, dvs. att bli en annan. Koolhaas/ OMAs arbetssätt och arbete analyseras genom vad som i denna avhandling kallas en “stökig” (messy) metod. Denna metod bygger på konceptuella verktyg från Deleuzes två filmböcker – inklusive montrage, tidsbild (time-image), det irrationella snittet och vilket-som-helst-rum (any-space-whatever) – och jämförelser med konstverk. Dessa verktyg driver en läsning av de arkitektoniska projekten, vilket möjliggör att spåra de estetiska strategier som används, och visa hur dessa projekt fungerar genom ett kombinerat tänkande av materia och erfarenhet. Verktygen visar hur en viss regim av estetiska tekniker (affektiva krafter) tillåter arkitekten att experimentera med arkitektonisk syntax och skapa öppningar (eller stängningar) i olika situationer. Avhandlingens struktur består av en serie fallstudier, presenterade i tre situationer. Dessa konkreta förhållanden placerar oss i relationer till det givna, inklusive allt från berättelser till sociala, tekniska, kulturella och miljömässiga begränsningar. Samtidigt tillåter fallstudierna upptäckten av andra möjligheter, flyktlinjer (lines of flight), immanenta för varje situation. Situation Ett, From Semiotics to Time-Image in Two Private Swimming Pools, undersöker realismen – och förvecklingen – av den arketypiska poolen som en varufetisch, samt de krav som ställs på poolen i förhållande till lycka. I de tre pooler som undersöks framträder tre skilda engagemang, genom olika former av förmedling; varje experiment uppfinner en form som förändrar den kommodifierade bilden och dess normativa subjektiveringsprocess. I de två poolerna står tanken om montage, och dess funktion i att avslöja en idé, som central. De två poolerna som utforskas är: Takpoolen på Villa dall’Ava (1991) ritad av Koolhaas/OMA; och naturpoolen vid Maison à Bordeaux (2004) ritad av Philippe Roussille Swedish Summary 425 och Koolhaas/OMA. Begreppet intellektuellt montage beskriver en bekant (quotational) upplevelse av den första poolen, genom abstraktion och radering. I det andra exemplet rör vi oss från idén om icke-objektet till att uppleva genom objektet, för att nå en poolupplevelse bortom berättelsen om kontemplation. Situation två, The Power of the False i Central China Television Headquarters, utforskar CCTV-byggnadens form och struktur (tektonik) utifrån frågan om hur ett representationssätt kan bryta sig loss från och omvandla fasta signifikanter i en värld av ikoner. CCTVs yttre form utforskas genom begreppen form, ikon och grafiska logotyp, samt Constantin Brancușis skulpturdrivna forskning. Denna kapacitet utforskas ytterligare i det som kallas ”det irrationella snittets tektonik.” Den arkitektoniska syntax som uttrycks i CCTV-byggnadens tektonik –i fasaden, belysningsplanen, strukturen och detaljerna – jämförs med Mies van der Rohes Seagram Building. Jämförelsen visar på en irrationell tektonik kontra en rationell tektonik. Genom begreppet ”falskhetens makt” visar avhandlingen på hur CCTV:s representationer och tektoniska upplevelse öppnar upp sig genom att vara oavslutade och främmande. Alternativa verkligheter visar sig: möjliga ”tänk om”, ögonblick av oenighet och ojämförbarhet. I oklarheten mellan vad som är sant och falskt frigörs byggnadens rum från dömande, och uppmuntrar besökaren att förhålla sig till detta. I situation tre, ”Acts of Fabulation, Seattle Central Library”, behandlas en idé om den offentliga sfären; utifrån Rosalyn Deutsches, Nancy Frasers, Rebecca Solnits och Chantal Mouffes förståelse av det offentliga rummet som ett rum präglat av pluralism, konflikter och obestämdhet. Med hjälp av dessa läsningar utforskar avhandlingen bibliotekets specifika offentliga sfär, som verkar inom den kommodifierade offentliga sfärens ändlösa inre värld. Arkitekturens aktiva inramning och dess skapande av plattformar (i form av programmering, material och detaljer stödjer produktionen av öppna offentliga sfärer. För att förklara denna process utforskar avhandlingen idéer om scenen, teatralitet och skillnaden mellan en “variationsteater” och en “representationsteater”. Genom att arbeta med konceptverktygen ”vilket som helst-rum” och ”montrage” framträder de upplevelser som byggnaden skapar. Vidare diskuteras fabulerande kraft; hur konventionella representationer och föreställningar om kollektivitet 426 Sammanfattning på svenska kan omvandlas; hur fabulering kan möjliggöra individuella berättelser i anslutning till kollektiva berättelser. Analysen av de tre situationerna visar på hur arkitekturens konstruktiva möjlighet att förmedla (från innehåll och uttryck) kan möjliggöra för en situerad frihet att uppstå. Arkitekturen är situerad eftersom den är beroende av den världslighet den befinner sig i, en värdslighet som arkitekturen relaterar till, muterar, konfronterar, återuppfinner och bryter sig ur. Arkitekturen är också situerad därför att den frigör potential och andra möjligheter, genom sin användbarhet. Avhandlingen framhåller arkitekturens situerade frihet som ett experimentellt förhållningssätt. I sin strävan att motverka (ny)liberala former av individualitet, lycka, komfort och trygghet, är den situerade friheten positiv och mångfaldig samt projektiv och imaginär. Frihet är besläktad med en performativ handling på en offentlig scen, som kräver ett gemensamt språk men också en viss grad av oräknelighet, tur, slump, hopp, överraskning, glädje och förundran. Avhandlingen visar på hur vi, för att stödja sådana handlingar, måste erkänna arkitekturens egna estetiska känsligheter och förstå dessa som underliggande former av politisk handling och effekter, vilka skapar såväl öppningar som begränsningar. Arkitektur berättar för oss hur vi ska se och uppleva saker – det handlar därför inte (alltid) om att ha en åsikt utan snarare att arkitekturen utövar artikulationssätt (modes of articulation). Dessa artikulationer uppmanar oss till omsorg och engagemang för världen, genom att projicera världar. Avhandlingen ger fem bidrag till forskningen. För det första argumenterar avhandlingen för en förståelse av arkitektur som en politisk och estetisk praktik som pekar bortom själva objektvärlden för att skapa något mer än det som redan är. Arkitektur inbjuder på detta sätt till en tolkning och förändring av världen; därigenom kan disciplinen få en bredare civil och emancipatorisk betydelse. Ett andra bidrag består i att avhandlingen utvidgar arkitekturens forskningsmetoder genom att identifiera vad arkitektur kan åstadkomma genom sin erfarenhetskapaciteter (experiential faculties). Genom en analysmetod som jämför byggnader, konstverk och konceptverktyg, syftar forskningen till att utforska betydelseproduktionen inom arkitekturens egen “kompetenszon” (zone of competence). Ett tredje bidrag är att arbetet, genom studiet av tre situationer som lokaliserar projektiva förskjutningar (realignment), bidrar till en förståelse av Swedish Summary 427 arkitekturens politiska natur och dess förmåga att svara på och utmana dominans genom att erbjuda alternativ. De utforskade konceptverktygen, inklusive fabulering, pekar på arkitekturens förmåga att delta i konstruktionen av nya och kreativa sätt att konra-aktualisera (counteractualizing the present); ett fjärde bidrag ligger därför i konturerna av den situerade frihetens arkitektur. För det femte kastar avhandlingen inte enbart nytt ljus över Koolhaas/OMA, men visar också på närvaron av den situerade frihetens politiska mentalitet, en mentalitet som alltid haft en plats i Koolhaas/OMAs verk. De tre situationer som utforskas i avhandlingen belyser också en förändring i OMA/Koolhaas arbete; en övergång från en idé om påtvingad frihet (representation) till en situerad frihet som finner engagemang genom upplevelser (experience) och imaginära flyktlinjer. I denna doktorsavhandling ligger tre komponenter till grund för att driva en alternativt tillvägagångssätt inom arkitektur: (1) ett kreativt experiment inifrån det verkliga, som erbjuder en öppen och icke-dömande upplevelse styrd av (2) en estetisk politik, dvs. teori och praktik mot situerad frihet; en transformation av arkitekturens språk genom att introducera begreppsliga verktyg från konst, film, litteratur, teater och filosofi; samt (3) genom en fabulerande arkitektur där berättande framträder som en projektiv praktik: att berätta historier leder till andra narrativ, vilket skapar nya möjligheter. Denna avhandling ska i slutänden förstås som en spekulation om hur arkitektur, som en estetisk praktik, kan bidra till förändring. Several contemporary architects have designed architectural objects that are closely linked to their particular sites. An in-depth study of the relevant relationship holding between those objects and their sites is, however, missing. This paper addresses the issue, arguing that those architectural objects are akin to works of site-specific art. In section (1), I introduce the topic of the paper. In section (2), I critically analyse the debate on the categorisation of artworks as site-specific. In section (3), I apply to architecture the lesson learned from the analysis of the art debate.

A pesar de su escala y reducido presupuesto, la Villa Dall’Ava, concebida y construida entre 1984 y 1991 constituye un verdadero crisol de experiencias y de exploraciones, no solo relacionadas con el espacio domestico, sino tambien con otras nociones que se integraran en proyectos de mayor escala como “territorio”, “paisaje” o “estructura”. A tenor de su posicion en el nivel de planta baja, la cocina aparece como un elemento aislado, segregado. Sin embargo, una vez activada a traves de los rituales diarios cotidianos, nos percatamos de su hiperconectividad. Es a la vez un espacio de uso y de transicion, dotado de una condicion estatica y dinamica que adquiere verdadero valor al comprobar que ese mismo estatus se reproduce en otras viviendas, a pesar de una definicion formal completamente diferente. Este articulo trabaja con dos herramientas. La primera, la documentacion original del proyecto perteneciente al archivo O.M.A. Rotterdam. La segunda, el dibujo, dejando la palabra en un segundo plano, minimizando su presencia. Queremos proponer una reflexion que vaya mas alla del tema concreto y que trate de desarrollar mecanismos de investigacion, comprension y discusion al interior de nuestra disciplina, y que nos permitan aprovechar nuestra formacion intrinseca como arquitectos disenadores.

This chapter investigates Rem Koolhaas’ early architectural work in the perspective that he gradually adopted the landscape as a concept to innovate OMA’s architecture practice and communication, also by means of the negotiation of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s achievements. After introducing the historical rise of the landscape, this hypothesis is explored along three parallel levels, dealing with concept, experience, and representation. The chapter enquires: the idea of using the landscape, through the postcard-mediated experience of New York, as a medium to get free from architectural figures, conventions and ideologies; then, OMA’s office organization able to turn the design process into a collective process, in which Koolhaas plays the role of editor and critic, and to give centrality to program, actions and movement, by declining Le Corbusier’s idea of promenade architecturale; finally, the role of representation in orienting both the research and the communication to present OMA’s work inside a fictive landscape made of different gazes and popular images.

Resumen La Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia es uno de los eventos más importantes al mundo para la arquitectura y el debate disciplinario. Dos de las pasadas bienales: la que tuvo como curador el holandés Rem Koolhaas en 2014 y la curada por el chileno Alejandro Aravena en 2016; con sus marcadas diferencias y oposiciones, son utilizadas como pretexto para una reflexión crítica sobre dos tendencias que pudieran definirse “hemisféricas”. La bienal de Koolhaas presentó una valiosa investigación histórico-enciclopédica, que emanaba una latente inquietud. La bienal de 2016, la primera Bienal curada por un arquitecto del “hemisferio sur” del mundo, intentaba de contra mostrar en su amplitud un panorama de trabajos socialmente más comprometidos, pero a su vez sesgaba hacia un exceso de pragmatismo. Posiblemente valorar en una reflexión comparativa estos dos enfoques pueda restituir más nitidez al pensamiento y a la acción, gracias a la síntesis entre posiciones antitéticas que, por si mismas parecen no abrazar el amplio espectro de las posibilidades y de las necesidades disciplinarias contemporáneas. Two of the past biennials: the one that was curated by the Dutchman Rem Koolhaas in 2014 and the one curated by the Chilean Alejandro Aravena in 2016; with their marked differences and oppositions, they are used as a pretext for a critical reflection on two tendencies that could be defined as "hemispheric". The Koolhaas Biennial presented valuable historical-encyclopedic research, which emanated a latent concern. The 2016 Biennale, the first Biennial curated by an architect of the “southern hemisphere” of the world, tried to show in its breadth a panorama of socially more committed works, but in turn skewed towards an excess of pragmatism. Possibly assessing these two approaches in a comparative reflection can restore more clarity to thought and action, thanks to the synthesis between antithetical positions that, by themselves, do not seem to embrace the broad spectrum of contemporary disciplinary possibilities and needs. Resumen Geert Bekaert nació en 1928 en Kortrijk, Bélgica, y escribió profusamente sobre arquitectura a lo largo de su vida, mayoritariamente en su idioma neerlandés, y sus ensayos se han recogido en nueve volúmenes publicados entre 1985 y 2011. El propio año 2011, cinco años antes de su muerte acontecida en 2016, ha aparecido un libro recopilatorio en inglés cuyo título es Rooted in the Real, editado por su discípulo Christophe Van Gerrewey. Este examina en la Introducción la trayectoria del crítico belga y proporciona ciertas claves sobre sus intereses y la repercusión de sus ideas, destacando el compromiso de Bekaert con su lengua original y el hecho de que, geográficamente, se sitúe entre un país sin apenas tradición arquitectónica como Bégica y otro con una concentración extraordinaria de producción y teoría de arquitectura moderna como es Holanda. El libro se divide en cuatro partes: la primera dedicada a temas generales de la arquitectura, la segunda al comentario sobre una serie de arquitectos belgas y las dos restantes la obra de distintos arquitectos relevantes en el ámbito internacional, desde Le Corbusier a Rem Koolhaas. El título elegido para la antología se basa, según el editor, en la concepción de la arquitectura por parte de Geert Bekaert como una forma esencial de crear realidad, es decir, en su creencia de que la arquitectura actúa fundamentalmente como mediador, haciendo la vida, si no mejor, más soportable y aceptable.

A first approach to the reflections of Rem Koolhaas about the tower typology leads us to New York skyscraper, which is the perfect metaphor for “automonument”: a monumentalized construction essentially designed to reaffirm its mere presence, which can be distinguished from the rest by its height. The legend of the Tower of Babel is an unwavering symbol of the building construction at heights, which dramatizes a full story of erection and destruction that is inevitably linked to Rem Koolhaas critical thinking about the discredited typology of the tower. A reading through the different “Babel” definitions catalogued by Rem Koolhaas and included in the glossary of terms in the text SMLXL provides a discourse on the destruc­tion of the biblical tower and the subsequent construction of the Koolhaasian New Babel, which begins its journey with skyscrapers and ends up claiming a new way of monumentality: absence in its purest form represented by the wall, which is the ultimate example of absence and the highest way of represent the monumental presence. That critical view begins with the Metropolitan Tower and the New Babel and finishes with the wall and the monument to the void.

RESUMEN El analisis del primer edificio de gran escala llevado a cabo por OMA, el Congrexpo de Lille, sirve para comprender mejor el interes desde un punto de vista teorico de Rem Koolhaas por las piezas de arquitectura de gran tamano. El estudio del Congrexpo se centra por un lado en la relacion del edificio con su entorno y por otro, en su propia estructura interna. Estos dos aspectos muestran como la ironia en Koolhaas va mucho mas alla de la simple provocacion, entendiendose como la logica capaz de conjugar posiciones teoricas anteriormente encontradas: Unidad o fragmentacion, universalidad o especificidad, Zeitgeist o Genius loci. La atencion a estas oposiciones caracteristicas del conflicto entre el Movimiento Moderno y la primera postmodernidad, definen un programa ideologico moderno, aunque a la vez critico sin ser reaccionario. Este programa se desvela a traves de la profundizacion en el analisis del Congrexpo y del master plan del que deriva. SUMMARY The analysis of Congrexpo at Lille, first large-scale building by OMA, is carried out in order of a better understanding of Koolhaas´ theoretical interest in large-scale architecture. The study is focused on both building-context and building-structure relationships. This two aspects show how irony in Koolhaas goes beyond simple provocation, understood as the logic capable of fitting together theoretical stances which were considered as contradictories before: unity vs. fragmentation, universality vs. specificity, Zeitgeist vs. Genius loci. The attention to these oppositions characteristics of the conflict between Modern Movement and first postmodernity defines an ideological agenda which is modern and simultaneously critical with modern principles, but without being reactionary. This agenda is revealed through deeper analysis of the Congrexpo and the master-plan from which it derives.

Based on the BA thesis Urban Spaces of Motion Pictures: Modern Architecture in the Perspective of Audiovisual Studies, this paper explores the links between architecture and cinema. My goal is not only to show some theoretical concepts regarding this topic (including ones by Sergei Eisenstein, Walter Benjamin and Jean Baudrillard), but also, and primarily, to study the actual effect which the cinematic perception has on the fi eld of modern architecture. Therefore, I analyse two projects of Rem Koolhaas (Embassy of the Netherlands in Berlin and ZKM in Karlsruhe) in the perspective of audiovisual studies. In my analyses, I examine such notions as "the narrativity of architecture" and "the architectural media screen", using some methodological tools borrowed from the field of film studies.

Günümüzde OMA’nın ve mimari araştırmaya yönelik yardımcı ofis AMO’nun başında bulunan mimar ‘bugünün toplumuna hitap etmek ve bugünün binalarını tasarlamak’ amacıyla uluslararası düzeyde ses getiren projelere imza atmıştır. Koolhaas, mimari uygulamanın yanı sıra mimarlık felsefesi alanındaki çalışmalarıyla da tanınmaktadır. Küreselleşmenin mimarlığa ve günümüz şehirlerine olan etkilerini ortaya koymakta ve bunun getirdiği kaotik ortamı memnuniyetle karşılamaktadır. Teorisyen olarak düşüncelerini, yayınladığı çeşitli kitaplarda ve deneme yazılarında görmek mümkündür. Halen Harvard Üniversitesi’nde seminer dersi yürütücülüğü yapan mimar, Prizker başta olmak üzere birçok ödüle layık görülmüştür. Bu çalışmanın amacı Koolhaas’ın teori ve uygulama alanlarında gerçekleştirdiği yapıtlarının hangi yaklaşımlarla meydana getirildiğinin örneklerle ortaya koyulmasıdır. Bu nedenle ilk olarak 20.yy. mimarlık ortamı üzerine bir literatür araştırması yapılmıştır ve tez çalışmasına dâhil edilmiştir. Çalışmanın bir sonraki bölümünde Koolhaas’ın yaşamı hakkında mesleki ve özel bilgiler verilmektedir. Diğer bir bölümde ise Koolhaas’ın kuramsal duruşu hakkında bilgi vermek amacıyla mimar’ın yayınladığı kitaplara değinilmiştir. Rem Koolhaas’ın projelerinden örneklerin incelendiği ve her bir projenin hangi mimari yaklaşımlar sonucu meydana geldiğinin tespit edildiği bölümde ise, projeler, Koolhaas’ın kendi gruplandırma prensibine göre, ölçekleri göz önüne alınarak ana gruplara ayrılmış, kendi içlerinde ise kronolojik sıra takip edilmiştir. Bu ana gruplara ilaveten Koolhaas’ın son dönem projeleri haklarında henüz fazla bilgi olmadığı için ayrı bir başlık altında irdelenmişlerdir. Sonuç bölümünde ise Rem Koolhaas’ın yapıtlarının birçoğunun tek bir mimari anlayışla oluşmadığı, farklı tutumların bir arada kullanıldığı hibrit tasarımlar oldukları ortaya çıkmıştır. Bununla birlikte, Koolhaas’ın projelerinde genellikle Modern Mimari prensiplerinden yola çıkan, fakat onu maniyere eden tek defaya özgü, alışılmadık formlar üreten bir tutum içerisinde olduğu görülmüştür., REM KOOLHAAS AND HIS WORKS SUMMARY Netherlands architect Rem Koolhaas is one of the prominent figures of today s world of architecture. In 1975 he founded the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) with his wife Madelon Vreisendorp, Elia and Zoe Zengelis. Currently, Koolhaas is the principal of OMA, and of its research-oriented counterpart AMO. Through the purpose of ‘addressing to today’s society and designing today’s building’ his projects have been established an international reputation. He is not also known with his architectural practices but with his works in theoritical field. He remarkes the influence of globalization on today’s cities, and he welcomes the chaotic envirenment produced by them. His thoughts as being theorist can be seen in his many books and essays. Currently he is lecturer of a seminar course at Harvard University. He has also been awarded many prizes, including Prizker prize. The purpose of this study is to expose with examples, Koolhaas’ approaches performed in theoretical and practical fields. Therefore, at first, a literature survey has been done in the 20th century architectural environment and it has been included in the thesis. In the next section of the study, professional and private information about Koolhaas life is given. In another section, in order to provide information about the theoretical position of Koolhaas, published books by architect have been mentioned. In the section where Rem Koolhaas examples of projects have been examined, each project s architectural approaches have been exposed. In that part of the projects, Koolhaas own grouping principle according to scale has been taken into consideration. Then, the main groups have been separated themselves inside by the chronological order. In addition to these main groups, Koolhaas’ recent projects have been examinated under a separate heading due to lack of enough information about them yet. In conclusion, it was understood that Rem Koolhaas’ works were generally not formed by a unique architectural consideration but by combination of several attitudes, and they were hybride designs. In addition to this, it was seen that Modern Architectural principles are generally point of departure for Koolhaas projects, but it was remarked that he is in an attitude to affect it and to produce unusual, unique forms., Yüksek Lisans, M.Sc.

The following research paper develops two lines of thought, both aimed to describe Beijing’s obstacle race to become a city at the avant-garde of town-planning. The first line of thought focuses in the reorganisation of Beijing’s North-South axis, entrusted to Albert Speer & Partners. This project links the city’s past and its future; the historic city-centre with Beijing’s new developments in the North, built to host the Olimpic Games in 2008. On the other hand, the article considers the impact of a number of singular projects by architects renowned internationally, including Rem Koolhaas (1944-) and Paul Andreu (1938-). And finally, the paper concludes with a number of considerations on how Chinese architects view these projects. El presente artículo desarrolla dos líneas de estudio, destinadas a confluir en un mismo objetivo; la carrera de obstáculos que Beijing ha emprendido para alcanzar el estatus de urbe vanguardista. La primera de estas líneas de investigación está centrada en la reorganización urbanística del eje norte-sur de Beijing; encargado a Albert Speer & Partners. Un proyecto que pretende unir el pasado y el futuro de la ciudad, al enlazar el centro histórico de la misma con la zona norte, destinada a acoger la celebración de los próximos Juegos Olímpicos del 2008. Por otro lado, no debemos obviar la presencia de ciertas estrellas de la escena arquitectónica internacional como son Rem Koolhaas (1944-) o Paul Andreu (1938-); a través de proyectos destacados por su singularidad. Finalmente, analizaremos la actitud de los arquitectos chinos ante dichos proyectos.
