The history of physiotherapy in Latin America has received little attention thus far in the English-speaking literature. In this paper, we draw on narratives from activists, educators, and professional leaders who have been instrumental in shaping the development of physiotherapy in Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador. Physiotherapists in the Latin American countries faced many similar challenges, including developing physiotherapy in the shadow of medicine, overcoming conservative attitudes toward women professionals, and frequent social upheaval. The paper explores the disputed story of physiotherapy's origins in the polio epidemics, the influence of Swedish remedial gymnastics, and the educational colonialism of North American and European educators. We examine some of the effects of social unrest and trauma, military rule, and economic instability on the professions attempts to establish itself in the face of competition from other professions allied to medicine. And we consider the efforts taken to establish the profession's autonomy and its shifting relationship with the state. We employed two different methods for data collection to explore aspects of physiotherapy's history in Latin America from a political and socio-cultural context: 1) A reconstruction of memories from activist physiotherapists in Colombia, Ecuador, and Argentina, who have seen, lived, and promoted the development of physiotherapy in their own countries, gleaned from in-depth interviews; and 2) Analysis of secondary sources. Data were analyzed following the method described by Maynes, Pierce, and Laslett (2008), exploring personal narratives. Textual data were analyzed using documentary research (Prior, 2003) using thematic analysis, to inductively discover, and describe relevant themes about the two main guiding study questions. A constant comparative method as outlined by Boeije (2002) was used to form categories, establish boundaries, and discerning conceptual similarities between participants' narrative. Five physiotherapists were interviewed. One from Colombia, two from Argentina and two from Ecuador. Three main themes were identified: 'A Female Profession?', 'training and education', and 'Present Day in Argentina, Ecuador, and Colombia'. Tensions between the interests of the State, professionals, patients, cultures, urban and rural services, and practices are prevalent throughout physiotherapy in Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador. Operating within these tensions is very much the reality for physiotherapists in Latin America today. Multiple histories emerge from the research, opening up a space for a more nuanced, polyphonic reading of physiotherapy in Colombia, Ecuador, and Argentina than has been heard to date. The 'paradox of progress' is an empirical regularity that associates more education with larger income inequality. Two driving and competing factors behind this phenomenon are the convexity of the 'Mincer equation' (that links wages and education) and the heterogeneity in its returns, as captured by quantile regressions. We propose a joint least-squares and quantile regression statistical framework to derive a decomposition in order to evaluate the relative contribution of each explanation. The estimators are based on the 'functional derivative' approach. We apply the proposed decomposition strategy to the case of Argentina 1992 to 2015. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I propose a few epistemological and methodological reflexions to account for intercultural daily communication. These reflexions emerged during a sociological research in Mendoza, Argentina, with Huarpes Indigenous students at the University of Cuyo. I observed that Indigenous people became quasi 'ethnographers' of diverse environments. To make intelligible their classmates' behavior, and to account for their own behavior, Huarpes follow, in diverse environments and interactions, public rules of meaning. The objective of this paper is twofold: (a) to stress the methodological scope of ordinary communication and ordinary reasoning in order to study understanding between people from different groups and categories, and (b) to contest a kind of 'pessimist' standpoint in social sciences and philosophy according to which the use of ordinary language reduces possibilities for understanding. The origins of sports in Argentina and Australia have been widely investigated. However, little research has been conducted to investigate the origins of Physical Education (PE). This paper explores the origins of PE in both Argentina and Australia. It first describes the general social context and the education system for both countries. Then, it explores the foundations of PE as a school subject and as a university degree in Argentina and Australia. Finally, it compares the origins of PE in both countries. In this paper, we work about the sense that the concept of inclusion acquired as a guiding principle of educational policies in the context of progressive governments 2003-2010 in Argentina, Uruguay and Brasil. This paper offers a method for examining elite schools in a global setting by appropriating Theodor Adorno's constellational approach. I contend that arranging ideas and themes in a non-deterministic fashion can illuminate the social reality of elite schools. Drawing on my own fieldwork at an elite school in Argentina, I suggest that local and global determinants in the school's past contribute to its current, and relatively recent, elite status. Moreover, all of these factors can be arranged to elucidate the school in a history of global capitalism that coincides with Argentine nationalism, British ‘informal’ imperialism and Presbyterian educationalism. This paper analyses the efficiency of Argentinean public universities and its determinants over a 10-year period (2004-2013). We quantify the effect on the efficiency scores of a set of institutional variables, i.e. policy decisions under the control of universities. Efficiency scores are determined on a first stage using nonparametric Data Envelopment Analysis and then we conduct a second stage study through parametric modelling. The results reveal the existence of a positive and significant effect on efficiency levels of those variables related to high-ranked professors and full-time positions, while those variables associated with budget allocation do not significantly affect the efficiency. Our empirical findings help identifying the characteristics that explain differences in the efficiency of public universities, providing new elements in studying the higher education system in Argentina. This article derives from a five-year collaborative engagement in which we intermittently visited Mocha Celis, a community-based high school programme in Buenos Aires. We seek to illustrate how, by centring travesti/trans experiences, some of Mocha Celis's practices align with Quinlivan's notion of an 'epidemic of love'. By doing this, we hope to extend Quinlivan's focus on sexualities education by showing the impact centring travesti people as part of this work may have, not only for travesti/trans individuals, but also for the overall educational project. Quinlivan's 'epidemic of love' and her engagement with Muñoz's queer utopias help us extend the idea of unruly sexualities education research – from a transformative space emergent from the hatred and dismissal faced by travestis into a school into a place of love and acceptance through difference. The aim of this paper is to analyze the forms of sociability among secondary school students in two state-managed schools in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The research was of a qualitative nature, and its empirical corpus consists of sociograms, in-depth interviews, and focus groups carried out with students in 2012 and 2014. First, the types of young people’s groups in each school are analyzed. Then the students’ motives for selecting or rejecting classmates are researched. Lastly, the different forms of sociability in each school are interpreted to be associated with the degree of student mobility in each institution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comparative analysis in relation to the emergency of the studies on educational inequalities in Mexico and Argentina, between the fifties and sixtys of the twentieth century. Theoretics, methodologic and comparative perspective is used, for draw up to similarities and differences between both countries. In this paper we attempt to make a contribution to teacher training in comprehensive sex education. Considering the importance of the hidden curriculum in the transmission of sexism and the reproduction of gender inequalities, we developed a device to work with educational interventions in emerging conflicts at school, focusing on those that relate to gender and sexuality. For the implementation of the device we formed a community of practice of middle school teachers from different disciplines in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The device is based on image theater, which enabled us to address school situations from the viewpoint of the physical body, revealing dimensions of sexuality often silenced in school. Using the proposed scene, teachers were able to reflect on the tensions and meanings attributed to pregnancy in the school system. We concluded that this type of analysis can represent a way to reflect on the roles and relationships of power, giving teachers new tools for situations that occur in school life. This article discusses the connections between health, illness and education from a historical perspective, aiming at providing clues for understanding these relationships that, as demonstrated in recent global events, cannot be analyzed separately. Over the centuries, societies have always found different ways of educating their new generations and deal with their health problems. The relationship between education and illness has varied throughout history, but in certain extreme cases, such as epidemics, this relationship intensifies and becomes more evident. Each particular situation affected the educational system and the school institutions in different ways, as it changed the life of teachers, pupils and their families, represented pedagogical challenges, and marked all of them at different levels and had an impact on their futures.This focuses on the marks left in education by certain events that took place during the epidemic since the foundation of the modern educational system until more recent times in Argentina. Such events are the succession of "plagues" from 1870 to 1920 (as the "Yellow Fever" in 1871 and the "Spanish Flu" in 1918) during the modernization processes, as well as the "Poliomyelitis Outbreak" in 1956 during the political struggle between Peronism and anti-Peronism. In both cases, we will try to a) reconstruct the ways in which society and specially school institutions went through these epidemics, b) analyze the close and changing bonds between health and education, which turned the school into a privileged space where that bond was enhanced, and c) present the consequences regarding instruction. This paper discusses four key geographical works published between the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the context of competing proposals about creating an "official national geography." The analyzed corpus has been selected on the basis of its impact on Argentine geography, cartography, and nation-building. The works of Victor Martin De Moussy and Woodbine Parish were the first important geographical and statistical descriptions of the Confederación Argentina and the Provincia de Buenos Aires respectively. The work of Francisco Latzina built upon these two works and was the first to unite the country into its approximate territorial whole. In the early 20th century, the erudite scholarship and cartography of Carlos Urién were selected by the Ministry of Education to be used in primary schools and to fulfill the role of official geography. From a constructivist approach, in this paper we analize the emergence of sport as a tool for social and educative inclusion in a social policy program related to education in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, between 2004 and 2011. From the analysis of different sources of information, public presentations and interviews to main public officials of the program Patios Abiertos en las Escuelas, we inquire into the basis that the different actors report and enable the incorporation of sport to achieve the inclusion. Intercultural bilingual education (IBE) programmes in Latin America pose interesting questions for sociolinguistics, since their implementation interrogates the link between language and the nation resulting from the emergence of nation-states, but also from processes of decolonization. In the case of Argentina, a new legal framework and the recent implementation of new public policies at national and provincial levels have caused key social and linguistic transformations in educational institutions in indigenous contexts. This paper aims to show some current transformations in multilingual management in Chaco's educational institutions. To do this, I consider the case of public schools, traditionally monolingual in Spanish, to which new actors are incorporated, i.e. Wichi bilingual teachers. Their presence at school and their linguistic practices illustrate the tensions between different language ideologies that coexist today in the Argentinean educational system. As I try to show, bilingualism – as an ideological sign and as symbolic capital – and bilingual practices constitute a contested terrain that can be explored through a sociolinguistic ethnography. In this paper we will analyze the ways in which the corporal discourse became part of the Salesian educational community in what is known as the Military Government of Comodoro Rivadavia, between 1944 and 1955. Starting in the mid-1930s, the Salesian congregation fostered, with the aid of the Administración de Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF: Treasury Petroleum Fields), technical education for youngsters that would later become part of the state owned oil company. We will show that, by opening a Technical School in 1937, the Church expected to bring the Christian Doctrine closer to the world of labor, and with this, to a specific form of masculinity. In this paper, we will analyze the level of conflict of teachers in the eighties in Argentina. We will do so through the study of the teacher union of the province of Santa Fe and of the 1988 strike that had a major national impact. This protest took different names, such as "Maestrazo", "White Demonstration" or "White Strike", but they all referred to the same scenario: mass mobilization encouraged by teachers and their union representatives in a troubled political, economic and cultural context at national level. In this paper they are proposed and analyzed measures of educational levels (by defining the variables "years of education" and "greater educational attainment") as well as educational flows (through the estimation of "gross" and "net enrollment rates") in order to observe their recent evolution and to make an updated profile of the distribution of educational attainment across the Argentinean population. Unlike most of the literature, the use of household survey allows the construction of educational indicators as levels and cycles actually finished without additional restrictive assumptions such as the average years of repetition or dropout. It will see that, although the flows evolution in terms of enrollment rates has been positive, there has been an enlargement of the gap between gross and net enrollment rate and they strongly depend on economic shocks. In addition, the stock measured by levels and years of education shows two points of concentration in the distribution across the population space. Since the late nineteenth century, comparisons of Argentina and Australia have been common as both countries had and have similar economies based on the export of commodities and the importation of migrants, finance and technology. By the 1970s it was apparent that in general Australians had a higher standard of living than did Argentines. In this article we argue that at least in part this was due to there being a more interventionist State in Australia, which raised more revenues per capita than did the Argentine State, and invested more heavily and more effectively in the development of societal capital including in the areas of education and health. This finding supports recent arguments from such multilateral organizations as the World Bank that investment in human capital, especially education but also health, generates economic and social development, and that this investment is predicated on government intervention. Objective: To assess the prevalence of five forms of malnutrition (wasting/underweight, overweight, obesity, stunting/short stature and anaemia) by socio-economic wealth (SEW) and educational level (EL) among children, adolescents and women of reproductive age in Argentina.Design: Analysis from a cross-sectional survey. Anthropometric indicators and prevalence of anaemia were estimated. SEW was classified according to the proportion of contributors in the household, employment status, EL and medical coverage. EL was categorized by years of formal education.Setting: National Health and Nutrition Survey, 2005.Participants: Children (n 27 015) <5 years, adolescent girls (n 1729) 11-19 years, women (n 4401) 20-49 years.Results: In Argentina, 26 % of households lived with unsatisfied basic needs and 23 % received at least one form of food assistance. Any form of malnutrition affected 23 % of children, 36 % of girls and 56 % of women. Children were especially affected by anaemia, overweight/obesity and stunting (15·2, 9·9, 7·4 %, respectively). Girls were affected by overweight/obesity, anaemia and stunting (22·5, 15·2, 6·2 %). Women were strongly affected by overweight/obesity, anaemia and stunting (43·8, 19·8, 10·5 %). Stunting or short stature was higher in low-SEW settings, doubling in prevalence between low and high levels, increasing four times among women in reproductive age (P < 0·05). Excess weight among children was higher in high-SEW settings, in women the tendency was inverse. Anaemia showed different tendency according to SEW.Conclusions: In 2005, Argentina had high rates of excess weight and anaemia, moderate prevalence of stunting and low frequency of wasting/underweight. This article’s aim is to provide, through a case study, new insights into current research on the civic education policies that encompassed the transition from authoritarian to democratic political regimes that took place as of the final years of the 20th century in Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Many of these studies parted from the assumption that citizenship could be promoted by imparting a universal set of rights and attitudes, which would not interact with pre-existent and varied conceptions of citizenship. By studying the midlevel students’ protests that took place in the city of Córdoba in Argentina in 2010, we show that even in societies that have undergone long dictatorial periods, there are pre-existent civic traditions that influence the implementation and effects of these policies. This leads to new recommendations on the importance of considering these traditions when designing and assessing civic education policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses the strategies found in two elite secondary institutions in Buenos Aires designed to legitimise the selection of students aspiring to become members of the elite. The first are personalization strategies where teachers and students work together with the aim of facilitating success in examinations. The second are strategies that promote competition between students, which have the effect of the students being responsible for their success. Field work took place in two schools, where interviews were conducted with the principals, teachers of different subjects and parents. Both schools use examinations as a mechanism for justifying their students’ merits, but develop different pedagogies to achieve this. The private school which recruits the children of the economic elite implements strategies to maximise students’ results by grouping them according to individual performance and facilitating the development of supportive relationships with teachers. At the public school, individual competition is fostered, where students find themselves in large classes and pupils appear to be an ‘anonymous’ mass. In this school, where mostly the cultural and intellectual elite send their children, merit is also justified through performance, but it is emphasised that young people have attained high results as a result of their, hard work. This article is concerned with teachers’ negotiation of global transitions premised on improving educational opportunity with implications for professionalism. The study blends sociology of gender, work, and organisations and gender policy analysis to theorise teachers’ policy negotiations. I explore how 20 Argentine teachers mediate 3 programmes’ demands for care work. Policy as practice and street-level bureaucracy are applied to data to interrogate for gendered boundary work. This exploratory comparative case study examines three schools in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires that have a considerable number of recent immigrant students. The article illustrates how these schools advance ideas of inclusiveness and pluralism through the curriculum and educational opportunities, as mandated by the national education law of 2006 and current core curricular standards. The study draws on data from participant observations and semi-structured interviews with administrators and teachers, gathered between 2009 and 2010. Preliminary results show inconsistent practices across schools, leaving many immigrant students ill-prepared and unsupported to become acculturated into Argentine society. This inconsistency appears to stem, at least in part, from two factors: the schools' missions and organizational practices; and lack of teacher in-service training and sufficient support from the city's central administration. The possibilities that are available to youth in contemporary Western societies are highly sophisticated and related mostly to the transition between secondary school and higher education, the first job placement, independent housing, lifestyle construction and the consumption of goods produced by cultural industries in a globalist world. Secondary education represents a main factor in terms of socialisation, training, access to employment, citizenship and youth identity construction, making it a key for public policies aimed at youth in Latin America. The article presents the initial results of a research project on transition processes from secondary school to employment in Argentina. The findings are based on statistical information and the empirical analysis of data gathered in two very different economic and social contexts: the first was one of the worst social and economic crisis in the country's history (1999–2003), and the second was a long period of economic growth and increased social welfare (2004–2012). The data are presented in response to the following question: How do different economic contexts influence the transitions of youth in different social class contexts? During the second half of the twentieth century, the Argentine education system went through a clear process of privatisation expressed in the increasing enrolment and state funding of the private sector. Especially in the 1990s, when the country implemented neoliberal economic policies, the academic literature had found in neoliberalism (in ideology, public policy and the enactment of certain laws) an explanation for this process of privatisation. Since the 2000s, and after a severe economic crisis, successive governments have rejected the neoliberal policies and have established a set of regulations and public policies with the explicit purpose of changing the previous policy trend. This article shows that after one decade of this new policy opposed to neoliberalism, the evidence suggests that privatisation of education has not only not been reversed but even expanded in a significant manner, reaching striking rates of increase, both in private enrolment and in state funding. Finally, the evidence presented shows that neither neoliberal nor post-neoliberal policies seem to determine the privatisation of education for the Argentine case. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries a group of intellectuals and Spanish scientists found it necessary to resume cultural relations with Latin American countries that had been Spanish colonies in the past. In order to do this, they promoted a school of thought called 'Hispano-Americanism', which aimed to create a Spanish-speaking geopolitical space that would counteract the growing influence of other European powers and of the United States in Latin America. This American projection would serve at the same time to 'regenerate' cultural and scientific life in Spain and to improve the country's position in the international field. This movement relied on the financial support of the Spanish communities settled in Latin America. They contributed to the creation of cultural institutions to disseminate Spanish scientific progress. The first and most successful of these creations was the Institucion Cultural Espanola de Buenos Aires (Spanish Cultural Institution of Buenos Aires), which became a model to imitate in other Latin American countries. The associations tended to impose their own interests and priorities, focusing on acquiring more prestige and social recognition in the countries that had settled through links with local political and cultural elites. This was due to the absence of a genuine Spanish foreign policy and to the financial responsibility adjudged to the local communities of Spanish immigrants regarding cultural and scientific initiatives. Positivism, the predominant philosophy of Latin America's elites at the end of the nineteenth century, found its exemplary expression in Brazil's castilhismo and Mexico's porfiriato. Argentina, in contrast, seemed to have deviated from the norm of ‘enlightened dictatorships’. After the end of the Rosas tyranny in 1852, authoritarianism had been discredited. Early positivism, as embodied by Teacher-President Sarmiento, could barely be distinguished from liberalism and no single political philosophy was able to exert hegemony. However, the significance of ‘scientific politics’ should not be downplayed. As this article argues, the merger, in the 1880s, of Comtean positivism and teacher training revolutionised education policies that aimed at erasing frontier backwardness and inserting future generations into an export-led economy, oligarchic polity, and homogenous national organism. Normal schools, especially Sarmiento's Escuela de Paraná, acted as laboratories for the assimilation, merger, and contestation of European, North American, and autochthonous scientific, philosophical, and pedagogical traditions. This article focuses on the process of workers' self-management brought about by a wave of factory occupations, which has taken place in Argentina in the last few years, with the support of preliminary evidence from qualitative fieldwork conducted in four factories. The aim of the article is to explore the dynamics of the decision-making and the re-organization of the labour process in the light of the constraints imposed on self-management by market mediations. The act of occupying a factory gives room to workers' control of the labour process and to a more democratic, collective decision-making, but workers' need to compete in the market reduces the sphere of collective decision, leading to centralization of power and divisions between directive and productive workers, hampering the possibility for workers to enrich their job and avoid self-exploitation. A new ichnospecies of Arthrophycus Hall 1852, A. minimus , is described from Upper Cambrian-Lower Tremadocian, shallow-marine strata of northwest Argentina. This new ichnospecies consists of small, long, regularly annulated hypichnial elements displaying subcircular to squarish cross-section and a ventral median groove. Side branches are occasionally present, but palmate, fan-like structures and scribbling patterns are absent. We adopt a relatively narrow diagnosis of Arthrophycus , suggesting that roughly annulated, cylindrical structures should not be included in this ichnogenus, unless other diagnostic features (i.e., squarish cross-section, median groove, zipper-like annulations) are also present. Arthrophycus is a common ichnotaxon in Ordovician-Silurian shallow-marine siliciclastic environments. Post-Paleozoic occurrences are removed from Arthrophycus . Arthrophycus has been proposed as a biostratigraphic index fossil in Ordovician-Silurian rocks. The presence of A. minimus in the Santa Rosita Formation of northwest Argentina indicates that Arthrophycus ranges at least from the Upper Cambrian-Lower Tremadocian with probable representatives in the Lower Cambrian and, therefore, its biostratigraphic utility is extended. Arthrophycus minimus represents the first Cambrian occurrence exhibiting not only fine, diagnostic morphologic features, but also the classical Arthrophycus behavioral pattern in dense monoichnospecific assemblages. The exploratory behavioral pattern displayed by A. minimus is simpler than that of the younger ichnospecies, particularly A. brogniartii, A. alleghaniensis, and A. lateralis .
