Environmental fluctuations during the Holocene caused important landscape changes in the Central Ebro Basin, which is a very sensitive region due to its semiarid climate, lithology, and continuous human presence. Severe erosion processes hinder palaeoenvironmental and archaeological record preservation. Infills of ephemeral stream valleys in semiarid environments are some of the best contexts for geoarchaeological studies. In this paper, we analyse the geomorphological processes, pedological features, and charcoal and pollen content and composition of the sedimentary sequence of La Poza Valley catchment area, with the support of additional information from La Bajada Valley. 14 C dates for 13 charcoal fragments provide the necessary chronological control. We describe 5 sedimentary units and a polycyclic sequence of six soils that covers most of the Holocene, beginning ca. 9.5 ky cal BP. Buried soils help to identify stability periods in the sedimentary sequence, while incision stages are detected through erosive contacts and terraced organisation of the sedimentary units. Charcoal and pollen content and composition, as well as the soil development, reveal an open forest of junipers and pines for the Early Holocene in the lower part of the sequence (mainly in Unit 1), very different from the current deforested landscape, also represented in the sequence (Unit 4). Thus, La Poza record shows the environment was favourable for hunter-gatherers from the Late Mesolithic and for the first Neolithic farmers. From then on, progressive degradation due to a combination of climate changes and increasing human pressure led to the current deforested landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In the regions surrounding the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, changes in erosion rates have been linked to the tectonics, climate and topography over different time scales. To understand the mechanisms governing the changes of erosion rates, it is important to study erosion rates by different methods and for different time scales. In inland drainage basins, deposition rates of terminal lake sediments can indicate basin-wide erosion rates at the millennial-scale. This paper presents three lake records of the Last Deglaciation and Holocene (Huahai Lake, Zhuye Lake and Yanchi Lake) from the Hexi Corridor, north of the Qilian Mountains, in arid China. Organic matter, terrestrial pollen concentrates, seeds, grasses and plant debris are used for conventional and AMS 14C dating. On the basis of 66 radiocarbon dates, lithology and grain-size, we infer relatively high basin-wide erosion rates during the Last Deglaciation and early Holocene in the three drainage basins, when the three lake sediments were seriously affected by reworking. The deposition rates were an order of magnitude or greater in these lakes during the Last Deglaciation and early Holocene than during the mid-to-late Holocene. During the transition period of the last glacial–interglacial cycle, significant climatic changes occurred in East and Central Asia, corresponding to the strengthening of the Asian summer monsoon and to increasing effective moisture in arid Central Asia, which can have strong impacts on basin-wide erosion rates north of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Moreover, melting glaciers in the Qilian Mountains probably also contributed to the high basin-wide erosion rates. At the same time, tectonic activity was not recognizable in the study area during that period. In the arid and semiarid regions surrounding the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, dramatic changes in erosion rates appear during the transition periods of the glacial–interglacial cycles, which illustrate the climatic controls on erosion rates at this time scale. Summary: This paper describes a new method for the assessment of palaeohydrology through the Holocene. A palaeoclimate model was linked with a hydrological model, using a weather generator to correct bias in the rainfall estimates, to simulate the changes in the flood frequency and the groundwater response through the late Pleistocene and Holocene for the Wadi Faynan in southern Jordan, a site considered internationally important due to its rich archaeological heritage spanning the Pleistocene and Holocene. This is the first study to describe the hydrological functioning of the Wadi Faynan, a meso-scale (241km2) semi-arid catchment, setting this description within the framework of contemporary archaeological investigations. Historic meteorological records were collated and supplemented with new hydrological and water quality data. The modelled outcomes indicate that environmental changes, such as deforestation, had a major impact on the local water cycle and this amplified the effect of the prevailing climate on the flow regime. The results also show that increased rainfall alone does not necessarily imply better conditions for farming and highlight the importance of groundwater. The discussion focuses on the utility of the method and the importance of the local hydrology to the sustained settlement of the Wadi Faynan through pre-history and history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
