The advancements in mixed reality (MR) technology in recent years have provided us with excellent prospects for creating novel approaches to supplement conventional physiotherapy to maintain a sufficient quantity and quality of rehabilitation. The use of MR systems to facilitate patients' participation in intensive, repetitive, and task-oriented practice using cutting-edge technologies to enhance functionality and facilitate recovery is very encouraging. Multiple studies have found that patients who undergo therapy using MR experience significant improvements in upper limb function; however, assessing the efficacy of MR is challenging due to the wide variety of methods and tools used. Because of these challenges, a novel approach, gamified MR-based solution for upper extremity rehabilitation, is proposed, which is an MR application for the Microsoft HoloLens 2, complete with game levels, and can measure the ranges of motion of the arm joints. The proposed rehabilitative system's functionality and usability were evaluated with ten healthy adult participants with no prior arm-related injuries and two occupational therapists (OTs). The system successfully provided rehab exercises for upper limb injuries through interactive mixed-reality games. The system can mimic upper limb behavior without additional sensors during rehab sessions. Unlike previously researched technologically-based rehabilitation methods, this method can integrate arm–joint data within the application and are independent of one another. The results and comparisons show that this system is relevant, accurate, and superior to previous VR-based rehabilitation methods because the VR-based system is blind to the surroundings, whereas the proposed approach has spatial awareness of the environment. Geriatric disorders, strokes, spinal cord injuries, trauma, and workplace injuries are all prominent causes of upper limb disability. A two-degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) end-effector type robot, iTbot (intelligent therapeutic robot) was designed to provide upper limb rehabilitation therapy. The non-linear control of iTbot utilizing modified sliding mode control (SMC) is presented in this paper. The chattering produced by a conventional SMC is undesirable for this type of robotic application because it damages the mechanical structure and causes discomfort to the robot user. In contrast to conventional SMC, our proposed method reduces chattering and provides excellent dynamic tracking performance, allowing rapid convergence of the system trajectory to its equilibrium point. The performance of the developed robot and controller was evaluated by tracking trajectories corresponding to conventional passive arm movement exercises, including several joints. In this paper, an autonomous exercise generation system based of fuzzy logic approach is presented. This work attempts to close a gap in the design of a completely autonomous robotic rehabilitation system that can recommend exercises to patients based on their data, such as shoulder range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength, from a pre-set library of exercises. The input parameters are fed into a system that uses Mamdani-style fuzzy logic rules to process them. In medical applications, the rationale behind decision making is a sophisticated process that involves a certain amount of uncertainty and ambiguity. In this instance, a fuzzy-logic-based system emerges as a viable option for dealing with the uncertainty. The system's rules have been reviewed by a therapist to ensure that it adheres to the relevant healthcare standards. Upper limb dysfunctions (ULD) are common following a stroke. Annually, more than 15 million people suffer a stroke worldwide. We have developed a 7 degrees of freedom (DoF) exoskeleton robot named the smart robotic exoskeleton (SREx) to provide upper limb rehabilitation therapy. The robot is designed for adults and has an extended range of motion compared to our previously designed ETS-MARSE robot. While providing rehabilitation therapy, the exoskeleton robot is always subject to random disturbance. Moreover, these types of robots manage various patients and different degrees of impairment, which are quite impossible to model and incorporate into the robot dynamics. We hypothesize that a model-independent controller, such as a PID controller, is most suitable for maneuvering a therapeutic exoskeleton robot to provide rehabilitation therapy. This research implemented a model-free proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller to maneuver a complex 7 DoF anthropomorphic exoskeleton robot (i.e., SREx) to provide a wide variety of upper limb exercises to the different subjects. The robustness and trajectory tracking performance of the PID controller was evaluated with experiments. Over the past years, robot-aided rehabilitation has gained traction to regain lost mobility in upper limb due to stroke. In most cases, rehabilitative robotic devices have not considered movement of shoulder joint center (center of glenohumeral joint); however, this movement leads to misalignment of human joints with robot joints, which is undesirable in any circumstances. In this research, a 2 degrees of freedom (DOF) ergonomic robotic shoulder, namely RDS-2, was developed to realize full range of motion (ROM) for abduction/adduction and vertical flexion/extension. Two mechanisms, which were designed in our previous research, have been included to realize shoulder elevation/depression and shoulder protraction/retraction during shoulder movement. To control the exoskeleton, a simple hybrid non-liner control approach based on model robot's dynamic model and its tracking error was developed. The stability of the controller was proved by Lyapunov stability. Experiments were done with slow, medium and fast pre-determined trajectories to see the efficacy of the used controller. In this paper, we focus on the human upper limb rehabilitation scheme that utilizes the concept ofteleoperation. Teleoperation can help the therapist demonstrate different rehab exercises to a different group of people at the same time remotely. Different groups of people from a different place connected to the same network can get therapy from the same therapist at the same time using the telerehabilitation scheme. Here, we presented a humanoid robot NAO that can be operated remotely by a therapist to demonstrate the exercise to a patient. To mimic the movement demonstrated by the therapist, Kinect V2 sensor which is a markerless vision-based motion-tracking device, was used. Modified Denavit-Hartenberg (DH) convention was used for the kinematic modeling of the human upper arm. From the Kinect data, a geometric solution was developed to find a unique inverse kinematic solution of human upper-extremity. SUMMARY: The robotic intervention has great potential in the rehabilitation of post-stroke patients to regain their lost mobility. In this paper, firstly, we present a design of a novel, 7 degree-of-freedom (DOF) upper limb robotic exoskeleton (u-Rob) that features shoulder scapulohumeral rhythm with a wide range of motions (ROM) compared to other existing exoskeletons. An ergonomic shoulder mechanism with two passive DOF was included in the proposed exoskeleton to provide scapulohumeral motion with corresponding full ROM. Also, the joints of u-Rob have more range of motions compared to its existing counterparts. Secondly, we propose a fractional sliding mode control (FSMC) to control u-Rob. Applying the Lyapunov theory to the proposed control algorithm, we showed the stability of it. To control u-Rob, FSMC has shown effectiveness to handle unmodeled dynamics (e.g. friction, disturbance, etc.) in terms of better tracking and chatter compared to traditional SMC. The design of an upper limb rehabilitation robot for post-stroke patients is considered a benchmark problem regarding improving functionality and ensuring better human–robot interaction (HRI). Existing upper limb robots perform either joint-based exercises (exoskeleton-type functionality) or end-point exercises (end-effector-type functionality). Patients may need both kinds of exercises, depending on the type, level, and degree of impairments. This work focused on designing and developing a seven-degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeleton called 'u-Rob' that functions as both exoskeleton and end-effector types device. Furthermore, HRI can be improved by monitoring the interaction forces between the robot and the wearer. Existing upper limb robots lack the ability to monitor interaction forces during passive rehabilitation exercises; measuring upper arm forces is also absent in the existing devices. This research work aimed to develop an innovative sensorized upper arm cuff to measure the wearer's interaction forces in the upper arm.
