Objective: To investigate the accuracy of Chat-Based Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) in answering questions and solving clinical scenarios of head and neck surgery., Study Design: Observational and valuative study., Setting: Eighteen surgeons from 14 Italian head and neck surgery units., Methods: A total of 144 clinical questions encompassing different subspecialities of head and neck surgery and 15 comprehensive clinical scenarios were developed. Questions and scenarios were inputted into ChatGPT4, and the resulting answers were evaluated by the researchers using accuracy (range 1-6), completeness (range 1-3), and references' quality Likert scales., Results: The overall median score of open-ended questions was 6 (interquartile range[IQR]: 5-6) for accuracy and 3 (IQR: 2-3) for completeness. Overall, the reviewers rated the answer as entirely or nearly entirely correct in 87.2% of cases and as comprehensive and covering all aspects of the question in 73% of cases. The artificial intelligence (AI) model achieved a correct response in 84.7% of the closed-ended questions (11 wrong answers). As for the clinical scenarios, ChatGPT provided a fully or nearly fully correct diagnosis in 81.7% of cases. The proposed diagnostic or therapeutic procedure was judged to be complete in 56.7% of cases. The overall quality of the bibliographic references was poor, and sources were nonexistent in 46.4% of the cases., Conclusion: The results generally demonstrate a good level of accuracy in the AI's answers. While ChatGPT has recently become very popular, AI has a long history and philosophy. This paper intends to explore the promises and pitfalls of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) AI and potentially future technologies by adopting a speculative methodology. Speculative future narratives with a specific focus on educational contexts are provided in an attempt to identify emerging themes and discuss their implications for education in the 21st century. Affordances of (using) AI in Education (AIEd) and possible adverse effects are identified and discussed which emerge from the narratives. It is argued that now is the best of times to define human vs AI contribution to education because AI can accomplish more and more educational activities that used to be the prerogative of human educators. Therefore, it is imperative to rethink the respective roles of technology and human educators in education with a future-oriented mindset.

For over two decades now, the application of Citizen Science to Education has been evolving, and fundamental topics, such as the drivers of motivation to participate in Citizen Science projects, are still under discussion. Some recent developments, though, like the use of Artificial Intelligence to support data collection and validation, seem to point to a clear-cut divergence from the mainstream research path. The objective of this paper is to summarise the development trajectory of research on Citizen Science in Education so far, and then shed light on its future development, to help researchers direct their efforts towards the most promising open questions in this field. We achieved these objectives by using the lens of the Affordance-Actualisation theory and the Main Path Analysis method.

Purpose: This paper aims to explore how critical digital and data literacies are facilitated by testing different methods in the classroom, with the ambition to find a pedagogical framework for prompting sustained critical literacies. Design/methodology/approach: This contribution draws on a 10-year set of critical pedagogy experiments conducted in Denmark, USA and Italy, and engaging more than 1,500 young adults. Multi-method pedagogical design trains students to conduct self-oriented guided autoethnography, situational analysis, allegorical mapping, and critical infrastructure analysis. Findings: The techniques of guided autoethnography for facilitating sustained data literacy rely on inviting multiple iterations of self-analysis through sequential prompts, whereby students move through stages of observation, critical thinking, critical theory-informed critique around the lived experience of hegemonic data and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructures. Research limitations/implications: Critical digital/data literacy researchers should continue to test models for building sustained critique that not only facilitate changes in behavior over time but also facilitate citizen social science, whereby participants use these autoethnographic techniques with friends and families to build locally relevant critique of the hegemonic power of data/AI infrastructures. Originality/value: The proposed literacy model adopts a critical theory stance and shows the value of using multiple modes of intervention at micro and macro levels to prompt self-analysis and meta-level reflexivity for learners. This framework places critical theory at the center of the pedagogy to spark more radical stances, which is contended to be an essential step in moving students from attitudinal change to behavioral change.

Purpose: To report the results of a nationwide online survey on artificial intelligence (AI) among radiologist members of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM)., Methods and Materials: All members were invited to the survey as an initiative by the Imaging Informatics Chapter of SIRM. The survey consisted of 13 questions about the participants' demographic information, perceived advantages and issues related to AI implementation in radiological practice, and their overall opinion about AI., Results: In total, 1032 radiologists (equaling 9.5% of active SIRM members for the year 2019) joined the survey. Perceived AI advantages included a lower diagnostic error rate (750/1027, 73.0%) and optimization of radiologists' work (697/1027, 67.9%). The risk of a poorer professional reputation of radiologists compared with non-radiologists (617/1024, 60.3%), and increased costs and workload due to AI system maintenance and data analysis (399/1024, 39.0%) were seen as potential issues. Most radiologists stated that specific policies should regulate the use of AI (933/1032, 90.4%) and were not afraid of losing their job due to it (917/1032, 88.9%). Overall, 77.0% of respondents (794/1032) were favorable to the adoption of AI, whereas 18.0% (186/1032) were uncertain and 5.0% (52/1032) were unfavorable., Conclusions: Radiologists had a mostly positive attitude toward the implementation of AI in their working practice. They were not concerned that AI will replace them, but rather that it might diminish their professional reputation.

This paper combines a theoretical-based model with a data-driven approach to develop an Early Warning System that detects students who are more likely to dropout. The model uses innovative multilevel statistical and machine learning methods. The paper demonstrates the validity of the approach by applying it to administrative data from a leading Italian university.

Within scientific debate on post-digital and education, we present a position paper to describe a research project aimed at the design of a predictive model for students' low achievements in mathematics in Italy. The model is based on the INVALSI data set, an Italian large-scale assessment test, and we use decision trees as the classification algorithm. In designing this tool, we aim to overcome the use of economic, social, and cultural context indices as main factors for the prediction of a learning gap occurrence. Indeed, we want to include a suitable representation of students' learning in the model, by exploiting the data collected through the INVALSI tests. We resort to a knowledge-based approach to address this issue and specifically, we try to understand what knowledge is introduced into the model through the representation of learning. In this sense, our proposal allows a students' learning encoding, which is transferable to different students' cohort. Furthermore, the encoding methods may be applied to other large-scale assessments test. Hence, we aim to contribute to a debate on knowledge representation in AI tool for education.

Purpose: This paper aims to present a comprehensive review of the present state and trends of smart education research. It addresses the need to have a systematic review of smart education to depict its research landscape in view of the growing volume of related publications. Design/methodology/approach: A bibliometric analysis of publications on smart education published in 2011 to 2020 was conducted, covering their patterns and trends in terms of collaboration, key publications, major topics and trends. A total of 1,317 publications with 29,317 cited references were collected from the Web of Science and Scopus for the bibliometric analysis. Findings: Research on smart education has been widely published in various sources. The most frequently cited references are all theoretical or discussion articles. Researchers in the USA, China, South Korea, India and Russia have been most active in research collaborations. However, international collaborations have remained infrequent except for those involving the USA. The research on smart education broadly covered smart technologies as well as teaching and learning. The emerging topics have addressed areas such as the Internet of Things, big data, flipped learning and gamification. Originality/value: This study depicts the intellectual landscape of smart education research, and illustrated the evolution and emerging trends in the field. The results highlight its latest developments and research needs, and suggest future work related to research collaborations on a larger scale and more studies on smart pedagogies.

The increasing complexity of the new breed of distributed intelligent systems, such as the Internet of Things, which require a diversity of languages and protocols, can only be tamed with design and programming best practices. Interest is also growing for including the human factor, as advocated by the "ambient intelligence" (AmI) research field, whose focus is on transparently and intelligently supporting people. These new design methodologies are increasingly needed in the toolbox of new electronic and computer engineers, and teaching strategies should be devised that allow students to acquire a systems-level view instead of getting lost in technology-oriented approaches. This paper describes a study carried out over two academic years, in a course in AmI at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. In the course, a project-based learning approach was adopted, in which students design and prototype an AmI system, and their progress is closely monitored throughout the semester. This paper presents the learning goals and teaching strategies, analyzes the learning outcomes from the qualitative and quantitative points of view, and highlights the lessons learned in the process.

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) models is increasingly leveraged to automate and optimize Data Centre (DC) operations. However, the interpretability and transparency of these complex models pose critical challenges. Hence, this paper explores the Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values model explainability method for addressing and enhancing the critical interpretability and transparency challenges of predictive maintenance models. This method computes and assigns Shapley values for each feature, then quantifies and assesses their impact on the model's output. By quantifying the contribution of each feature, SHAP values can assist DC operators in understanding the underlying reasoning behind the model's output in order to make proactive decisions. As DC operations are dynamically changing, we additionally investigate how SHAP can capture the temporal behaviors of feature importance in the dynamic DC environment over time. We validate our approach with selected predictive models using an actual dataset from a High-Performance Computing (HPC) DC sourced from the Enea CRESCO6 cluster in Italy. The experimental analyses are formalized using summary, waterfall, force, and dependency explanations. We delve into temporal feature importance analysis to capture the features' impact on model output over time. The results demonstrate that model explainability can improve model transparency and facilitate collaboration between DC operators and AI systems, which can enhance the operational efficiency and reliability of DCs by providing a quantitative assessment of each feature's impact on the model's output. Purpose: To assess the perceptions and attitudes of radiologists toward the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical practice., Methods: A survey was conducted among members of the SIRM Lombardy. Radiologists' attitudes were assessed comprehensively, covering satisfaction with AI-based tools, propensity for innovation, and optimism for the future. The questionnaire consisted of two sections: the first gathered demographic and professional information using categorical responses, while the second evaluated radiologists' attitudes toward AI through Likert-type responses ranging from 1 to 5 (with 1 representing extremely negative attitudes, 3 indicating a neutral stance, and 5 reflecting extremely positive attitudes). Questionnaire refinement involved an iterative process with expert panels and a pilot phase to enhance consistency and eliminate redundancy. Exploratory data analysis employed descriptive statistics and visual assessment of Likert plots, supported by non-parametric tests for subgroup comparisons for a thorough analysis of specific emerging patterns., Results: The survey yielded 232 valid responses. The findings reveal a generally optimistic outlook on AI adoption, especially among young radiologist (<30) and seasoned professionals (>60, p<0.01). However, while 36.2 % (84 out 232) of subjects reported daily use of AI-based tools, only a third considered their contribution decisive (30 %, 25 out of 84). AI literacy varied, with a notable proportion feeling inadequately informed (36 %, 84 out of 232), particularly among younger radiologists (46 %, p < 0.01). Positive attitudes towards the potential of AI to improve detection, characterization of anomalies and reduce workload (positive answers > 80 %) and were consistent across subgroups. Radiologists' opinions were more skeptical about the role of AI in enhancing decision-making processes, including the choice of further investigation, and in personalized medicine in general. Overall, respondents recognized AI's significant impact on the radiology profession, viewing it as an opportunity (61 %, 141 out of 232) rather than a threat (18 %, 42 out of 232), with a majority expressing belief in AI's relevance to future radiologists' career choices (60 %, 139 out of 232). However, there were some concerns, particularly among breast radiologists (20 of 232 responders), regarding the potential impact of AI on the profession. Eighty-four percent of the respondents consider the final assessment by the radiologist still to be essential., Conclusion: Our results indicate an overall positive attitude towards the adoption of AI in radiology, though this is moderated by concerns regarding training and practical efficacy. Addressing AI literacy gaps, especially among younger radiologists, is essential. Furthermore, proactively adapting to technological advancements is crucial to fully leverage AI's potential benefits. The aim of this paper is to present a shortened version of the SIS (support intensity scale) obtained by the application of mathematical models and instruments, adopting special algorithms based on the most recent developments in artificial adaptive systems. All the variables of SIS applied to 1,052 subjects with ID (intellectual disabilities) involved in the validation of the Italian version of SIS, were analyzed with the aforementioned artificial adaptive systems. This study has identified 56 items, whose responses are able to explain up to 89% of sample variance. Secondly, these same variables have been analyzed by means of specific semantic networks, in order to demonstrate the plenty of scientific suggestions emerging from such an approach to statistic processing. Framing of the research. The Fourth Industrial Revolution (I4.0) is dramatically affecting firms' strategies, disrupting their business models. In particular, a bunch of digital technologies like IoT (Internet of Things), cloud platforms, big data, artificial intelligence and data analysis are offering firms the possibility to manage products functions, remotely and globally, kick-starting the design of innovative business models. Purpose of the paper. Using studies that have analyzed the link between business model innovation and ambidexterity as theoretical background, the aim of the paper is to investigate how incumbent BtoB manufacturing firms develop an I4.0 disrupting business model by addressing the related duality between exploration and exploitation (ambidexterity). Methodology. The paper fulfils its purposes by the means of a qualitative investigation, discussing empirical evidence coming from a cross-case analysis of 25 Italian SMEs and medium-large enterprises, selected crossing secondary data and indications coming from a specific panel of ten industry experts. Results. The impact of I4.0 technologies on firms' business models depend heavily on the access to user-firms' data. 21 firms are involved in non-disruptive modifications of the business model; 4 firms are conducting more sophisticated experimentations in result-oriented product-service systems. These firms, that we have named "challengers", are in a privileged position in order to unleash the potential of I4.0, introducing advanced services directly related to the customers' needs. All these challengers adopt a particular form of contextual ambidexterity in which the exploration activities involve specifically selected (key) customers. Practical implications. Managers need to understand which are the pace and extent of change for the various components of the corporate business model to innovate during each specific step of transition towards I4.0 technologies. Research limitations. The main limitation of the study is because the investigated companies were going through a transition phase: therefore, we can't tell what the outcome of this evolutionary journey will be, and if it will be the same for every firm. Originality of the paper. The paper proposes an original framing that contributes theoretically to the literature interfacing business model innovation and ambidexterity management. This paper explores the potential of leveraging electronic health records (EHRs) for personalized health research through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, specifically Named Entity Recognition (NER). By extracting crucial patient information from clinical texts, including diagnoses, medications, symptoms, and lab tests, AI facilitates the rapid identification of relevant data, paving the way for future care paradigms. The study focuses on Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Italian clinical notes, introducing a novel set of 29 clinical entities that include both presence or absence (negation) of relevant information associated with NSCLC. Using a state-of-the-art model pretrained on Italian biomedical texts, we achieve promising results (average F1-score of 80.8%), demonstrating the feasibility of employing AI for extracting biomedical information in the Italian language.

The simple but deep sense of technological progress (TP) lies in the possibility of improving human life. The immediate question thereafter is clearly about the distribution of the gains from TP. With the diffusion of automation and artificial intelligence, fears about the implications of TP on employment and wages have gained renewed importance. While scholars are divided on the effects of this new wave of TP, they agree that every economy will be affected differently, and hence, it will require tailored policy measures. In this paper, we frame how TP could affect the Italian economy, as it is now. We simulate four different scenarios through a dynamic computable general equilibrium model with three types of labour and six types of households. We calibrate the model on the social accounting matrix, and we find that TP returns higher growth patterns albeit with disruptive effects on labour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geohazard prevention and mitigation are highly complex and remain challenges for researchers and practitioners. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an effective tool for addressing these challenges. Therefore, for decades, an increasing number of researchers have begun to conduct AI research in the field of geohazards leading to rapid growth in the number of related papers. This has made it difficult for researchers and practitioners to grasp information on cutting-edge developments in the field, thus necessitating a comprehensive review and analysis of the current state of development in the field. In this study, a comprehensive scientometric analysis appraising the state-of-the-art research for geohazard was performed based on 9226 scientometric records from the Web of Science core collection database. Multiple types of scientometric techniques, including coauthor analysis, co-citation analysis, and cluster analysis were employed to identify the most productive researchers, institutions, and hot research topics. The results show that research related to the application of AI in the field of geohazards experienced a period of rapid growth after 2000, with major developments in the field occurring in China, the United States, and Italy. The hot research topics in this field are ground motion, deep learning (DL), and landslides. The commonly used AI algorithms include DL, support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree (DT). The obtained visualization on research networks offers valuable insights and an in-depth understanding of the key researchers, institutions, fundamental articles, and salient topics through animated maps. We believe that this scientometric review offers useful reference points for early-stage researchers and provides valuable in-depth information to experienced researchers and practitioners in the field of geohazard research. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedent impact of everyday life with deleterious consequences on global health, economics, and society. Thus, accurate and timely information is critical for monitoring its spread and mitigating its impact. ChatGPT is a large language model chatbot with artificial intelligence, developed by OpenAI, that can provide both textual content and R code for predictive models. It may prove to be useful in analyzing and interpreting COVID-19-related data., Methods: This paper explores the application of ChatGPT to the monitoring of the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting R code for predictive models and demonstrating the model's capabilities in sentiment analysis, information extraction, and predictive modelling. We used the prediction models suggested by ChatGPT to predict the daily number of COVID-19 deaths in Italy. The prediction accuracy of the models was compared using the following metrics: mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute deviation (MAD) and root mean squared error (RMSE)., Results: ChatGPT suggested three different predictive models, including ARIMA, Random Forest and Prophet. The ARIMA model outperformed the other two models in predicting the daily number of COVID-19 deaths in Italy, with lower MSE, MAD, and RMSE values as compared to the Random Forest and Prophet., Conclusions: This paper demonstrates the potential of ChatGPT as a valuable tool in the monitoring of the pandemic. By processing large amounts of data and providing relevant information, ChatGPT has the potential to provide accurate and timely insights, and support decision-making processes to mitigate the spread and impact of pandemics. The paper highlights the importance of exploring the capabilities of artificial intelligence in the management of public emergencies and provides a starting point for future research in this area.

The combination of innovation and artificial intelligence (AI), with reference to innovative startups, presents a challenge for firms that start operating in the market. Such a transformation in the entrepreneurial scenario, which is likely to define new business models, has been observed in two European countries: Italy and Romania. In this article, we examine the AI-induced innovations in the regulatory frameworks of both countries. We then provide insights from interviews with CEOs of innovative startups, who discuss the challenges and prospects facing the industry. Forecasting of water availability has become of increasing interest in recent decades, especially due to growing human pressure and climate change, affecting groundwater resources towards a perceivable depletion. Numerous research papers developed at various spatial scales successfully investigated daily or seasonal groundwater level prediction starting from measured meteorological data (i.e., precipitation and temperature) and observed groundwater levels, by exploiting data-driven approaches. Barely a few research combine the meteorological variables and groundwater level data with unsaturated zone monitored variables (i.e., soil water content, soil temperature, and bulk electric conductivity), and—in most of these—the vadose zone is monitored only at a single depth. Our approach exploits a high spatial-temporal resolution hydrogeological monitoring system developed in the Conero Mt. Regional Park (central Italy) to predict groundwater level trends of a shallow aquifer exploited for drinking purposes. The field equipment consists of a thermo-pluviometric station, three volumetric water content, electric conductivity, and soil temperature probes in the vadose zone at 0.6 m, 0.9 m, and 1.7 m, respectively, and a piezometer instrumented with a permanent water-level probe. The monitored period started in January 2022, and the variables were recorded every fifteen minutes for more than one hydrologic year, except the groundwater level which was recorded on a daily scale. The developed model consists of three "virtual boxes" (i.e., atmosphere, unsaturated zone, and saturated zone) for which the hydrological variables characterizing each box were integrated into a time series forecasting model based on Prophet developed in the Python environment. Each measured parameter was tested for its influence on groundwater level prediction. The model was fine-tuned to an acceptable prediction (roughly 20% ahead of the monitored period). The quantitative analysis reveals that optimal results are achieved by expoiting the hydrological variables collected in the vadose zone at a depth of 1.7 m below ground level, with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.189, a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 0.062, a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.244, and a Correlation coefficient of 0.923. This study stresses the importance of calibrating groundwater level prediction methods by exploring the hydrologic variables of the vadose zone in conjunction with those of the saturated zone and meteorological data, thus emphasizing the role of hydrologic time series forecasting as a challenging but vital aspect of optimizing groundwater management. On 28 February–2 March 2023, the 2023 States General of Artificial Intelligence (AI) event was held in Italy under the sponsorship of several multinational companies. The purpose of this event was mainly to create a venue for allowing international protagonists of AI to discuss and confront on the recent trends in AI. The aim of this paper is to report on the state of the art of the literature on the most recent control engineering and artificial intelligence methods for managing and controlling energy networks with improved efficiency and effectiveness. More in detail, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the scope of the literature review considered in this paper is specifically limited to recent trends in EV charging, cyber-physical security, and predictive maintenance. These application scenarios were identified in the above-mentioned event as responsible for triggering most of the business needs currently expressed by energy companies. This article discusses e-justice platform development and its implications for judicial governance. Procedural decisions and court work processes can now be encoded into the digital court work environment. This may affect fundamental values such as fair procedure and judicial impartiality and independence. The article compares three e-justice platforms (EJP): e-Curia (Court of Justice of the European Union), Civil Trial on Line (TOL) in Italy, and Kwaliteit en Innovatie Rechtspraak (KEI) in the Netherlands. In an innovative approach, it considers EJP's as enterprise information systems. It combines functional and managerial perspectives with those of procedural law and technology. The paper studies the impact of merging procedural law and technology for developing EJP's and for reconciling the requirements of both law and technology in the highly regulated context of courts and judiciaries. The paper finds that, in EJP development and implementation, law and technology's combined effect may affect fair procedure. The article concludes with a discussion of the kind of governance needed to safeguard fair procedure and proper functioning of IT in courts. This need becomes even more pressing with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). The article finds that resolving these issues is part of the judiciary's responsibility for fair procedures and cannot be left to IT experts. All societies should carefully address the child abuse and neglect phenomenon due to its acute and chronic sequelae. Even if artificial intelligence (AI) implementation in this field could be helpful, the state of the art of this implementation is not known. No studies have comprehensively reviewed the types of AI models that have been developed/validated. Furthermore, no indications about the risk of bias in these studies are available. For these reasons, the authors conducted a systematic review of the PubMed database to answer the following questions: "what is the state of the art about the development and/or validation of AI predictive models useful to contrast child abuse and neglect phenomenon?"; "which is the risk of bias of the included articles?". The inclusion criteria were: articles written in English and dated from January 1985 to 31 March 2023; publications that used a medical and/or protective service dataset to develop and/or validate AI prediction models. The reviewers screened 413 articles. Among them, seven papers were included. Their analysis showed that: the types of input data were heterogeneous; artificial neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and natural language processing were used; the datasets had a median size of 2600 cases; the risk of bias was high for all studies. The results of the review pointed out that the implementation of AI in the child abuse and neglect field lagged compared to other medical fields. Population biobanks are an increasingly important infrastructure to support research and will be a much-needed resource in the delivery of personalised medicine. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems can process and cross-link very large amounts of data quickly and be used not only for improving research power but also for helping with complex diagnosis and prediction of diseases based on health profiles. AI, therefore, potentially has a critical role to play in personalised medicine, and biobanks can provide a lot of the necessary baseline data related to healthy populations that will enable the development of AI tools. To develop these tools, access to personal data, and in particular, sensitive data, is required. Such data could be accessed from biobanks. Biobanks are a valuable resource for research but accessing and using the data contained within such biobanks raise a host of legal, ethical, and social issues (ELSI). This includes the appropriate consent to manage the collection, storage, use, and sharing of samples and data, and appropriate governance models that provide oversight of secondary use of samples and data. Biobanks have developed new consent models and governance tools to enable access that address some of these ELSI-related issues. In this paper, we consider whether such governance frameworks can enable access to biobank data to develop AI. As Italy has one of the most restrictive regulatory frameworks on the use of genetic data in Europe, we examine the regulatory framework in Italy. We also look at the proposed changes under the European Health Data Space (EHDS). We conclude by arguing that currently, regulatory frameworks are misaligned and unless addressed, accessing data within Italian biobanks to train AI will be severely limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Italian Government planned to invest €15 billion of European funds on National Health Service digitalization and primary care enhancement. The critical burden brought by the pandemic upon hospital care mean these investments could no longer be delayed, considering the extraordinary backlogs of many treatments and the ordinary gaps of fragmented long-term care, in Italy and abroad. National guidelines have been published to standardize interventions across the Italian regions, and telemedicine is frequently mentioned as a key innovation to achieve both goals. The professional resources needed to run the facilities introduced in primary care are defined with great precision, but no details are given on how digitalization and remote care technologies must be implemented in this context. Building on this policy case, this paper focuses on what contribution digitalization and telemedicine can offer to specific primary care innovations, drawing from implemented technology-driven policies which may support the effective stratification, prevention and management of chronic patient needs, including anticipatory healthcare, population health management, adjusted clinical groups, chronic care management, quality and outcomes frameworks, patient-reported outcomes and patient-reported experience. Such a very powerful methodology can have important applications in radio astronomy technology, for instance, in the new DBBC4 VLBI backend development project and in the low frequency array AntArr under development on the Etna slopes in Italy. Precision Agriculture (PA) has revolutionized crop management by leveraging information technology, satellite positioning data, and remote sensing. One crucial component in PA applications is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which offers valuable insights into crop vigor and health. However, discontinuity of optical satellite acquisitions related to cloud cover and the huge load of the required processing time pose challenges to real-time applications. NDVI prediction emerges as an innovative solution to address these limitations. It allows for proactive decision-making by providing accurate estimates, enabling farmers and land managers to plan essential agronomic activities such as irrigation, fertilization, and pest control, based on anticipated future conditions. This study introduces an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model incorporating NDVI, Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), temperatures, and precipitation as predictive variables. The model employs a novel time series slicing algorithm, Boosting Adaptive Time Series Slicer (BATS), to enhance the input training dataset's variability, presenting the model with a broader range of examples. A 2-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) forecasting model was developed to predict future NDVI values over short and medium-term horizons. The study area used to train, test and validate the ANN corresponds to a diverse landscape of cultivated corn fields located in Piemonte (NW-Italy). Results showed that NDVI future estimates were accurate; considering three time horizons for predictions (5, 10, and 15 days) RMSE values resulted to be 0.028, 0.038 and 0.050, respectively. Additionally, ablation tests proved that the most important variable for enhancing the model's accuracy is the NDWI, and the most useful timesteps are the four most recent ones. To preliminary investigate the capability of the ANN to operate over a wider and different area it was applied over the entire Europe, using the LUCAS dataset as reference map to locate corn fields. Results show RMSE of 0.062, 0.083 and 0.105 for the 5, 10 and 15 days forecasting horizons, respectively. The methodology proposed in this paper can be a possible alternative to more ordinary approaches for NDVI forecasting that nowadays appears to be a fundamental step for a proactive precision agriculture where crop management can be significantly improved. Landslide hazards have significant social, economic, and environmental impact. This work provides a critical review of the main existing literature using satellite data for mapping landslides. We created and examined an extensive bibliographic database from Web of Science (WoS) consisting in 291 outputs from > 1,000 authors who studied almost 700,000 landslides across all continents, for a total of 52 countries represented with China and Italy on top of the list with more authors. The outputs are equivalent to ~ 5% of the whole landslide-related production for the period 1996–2022, with a 600% increase in the number of papers after 2014 driven by the availability of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. Analysis of the geographical location across the 66 different countries analysed shows that, within the total number of contributions, the satellite imagery was used to detect and map two main types of landslides: flows and slides. When specified in the manuscripts, the events have been triggered by rainfall (104 cases), earthquakes (32 cases), or both (17 cases). Slope instabilities in these areas were predominantly identified through manual detection (40%); but since 2020, the advent of artificial intelligence is suppressing all other techniques. Despite the undisputed progress of EO-based landslide mapping over the last 26 years, which makes it a consolidated tool for many landslide-related applications, challenges still remain for an effective and operational use of EO images for landslide detection and mapping, and we provide a perspective for future applications considering the existing and the planned SAR satellite missions. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more and more pervasive in our everyday life, new questions arise about its ethical and social impacts. Such issues concern all stakeholders involved in or committed to the design, implementation, deployment, and use of the technology. The present document addresses these preoccupations by introducing and discussing a set of practical obligations and recommendations for the development of applications and systems based on AI techniques. With this work we hope to contribute to spreading awareness on the many social challenges posed by AI and encouraging the establishment of good practices throughout the relevant social areas. As points of novelty, the paper elaborates on an integrated view that combines both human rights and ethical concepts to reap the benefits of the two approaches. Moreover, it proposes innovative recommendations, such as those on redress and governance, which add further insight to the debate. Finally, it incorporates a specific focus on the Italian Constitution, thus offering an example of how core legislations of Member States might contribute to further specify and enrich the EU normative framework on AI. This paper proposes an energy management system based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to be integrated with the standard ISO 50001 and aims to describe the definition and the enhancement of the energy baselines by means of artificial intelligence techniques applied and tested on the real electrical absorption data of the auxiliary units of different thermal power plants in Italy. Power plant optimized operations are important both for cost and energy performance reasons with related effects on the environment in the next future energy transition scenario. The improvement of the energy baselines consists in determining more accurate consumption monitoring models that are able to track inefficiencies and absorption drifts through data analytics and Artificial Intelligence. Starting from the analysis of the energy vectors at the production site level, we performed a multi-scale analysis to define the consumption at macro areas level and finally find the most relevant consumption units within the plants. A comparison of different ANNs applied to several real power plant data was performed to model complex plant architecture and optimize energy savings with respect to pre-set thresholds according to the ISO 50001 standard procedure. The energy baselines are determined through the analysis of the data available in the power plants' Distributed Control System (DCS), and we can identify the consumption derived from the unit's proper operation. Based on the reported numerical simulations, improved baselines have been reached up to a 5% threshold for different plant sub-units, thus representing a relevant overall saving in terms of alert threshold definition and related control efficiency: a potential saving of about 140 MWh throughout the considered three-year dataset was obtained taking into account a cooling tower sub-unit, representing a considerable economic benefit. The results obtained highlight the neural technique efficiency in defining more accurate energy baselines and represents a valuable tool for large energy plant asset management to face relevant energy drifts observed in the last years of plant operation. Incorrect pesticide use in plant protection often involve a risk to the health of operators and consumers and can have negative impacts on the environment and the crops. The application of artificial intelligence techniques can help the reduction of the volume sprayed, decreasing these impacts. In Italy, the production of ready-to-eat salad in greenhouses requires usually from 8 to 12 treatments per year. Moreover, inappropriate sprayers are frequently used, being originally designed for open-field operations. To solve this problem, a small vehicle suitable for moving over rough ground (named "rover"), was designed, able to carry out treatments based on a single row pass in the greenhouse, devoted to reduce significantly the sprayed product amount. To ascertain its potential, the prototype has been tested at two growth stages of some salad cultivars, adopting different nozzles and boom settings. Parameters such as boom height, nozzle spacing and inclination, pump pressure and rover traveling speed were studied. To assess the effectiveness of the spraying coverage, for each run several water-sensitive papers were placed throughout the vegetation. Compared to the commonly distributed mixture volume (1000 L/ha), the prototype is able to reduce up to 55% of product sprayed, but still assure an excellent crop coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Big data and artificial intelligence are extremely useful tools for improving care pathways and for designing and evaluating preventive medicine and health promotion strategies. The paper describes Cineca's projects that use artificial intelligence techniques made possible thanks to the computing power and data processing technologies that the Consortium can use. The agreement between the Italian Ministry of Health and Cineca is also announced: the aim is to implement a system that, through artificial intelligence and big data analysis techniques, can develop a new governance of the National health system.

This paper investigates the role of local knowledge specializations from universities in the artificial intelligence (AI) startup creation process. The empirical analysis is grounded in the Knowledge Spillovers Theory of Entrepreneurship. It provides evidence of the interplay between the presence of university knowledge specializations and the creation of AI startups located in Italian NUTS3 regions. More precisely, we analyze the mix of different types of university knowledge specializations able to foster the creation of AI startups, demonstrating that competencies in technological domains, such as computer science, need to be complemented with domains of applications for the emergence of AI technology. The findings indicate that the creation of AI startups is closely tied to the local knowledge present in the region. The article also proposes an empirical approach to identify and classify innovative startups operating in AI domains. Industrial robots are a strategic future technology and an important part of the development of artificial intelligence, and they are a necessary means for the intelligent transformation of manufacturing industry. Based on global industrial robot trade data from 1998 to 2017, this paper applies the dynamic complex network analysis method to reveal the spatial and temporal variation characteristics and trade status evolution of the global industrial robot trade network. The results show that the global industrial robot network density has steadily increased, and the industrial robot trade has been characterized by ‘diversification’. The number of major industrial robot exporters in the world is increasing, and the import market is increasingly diversified. The export market structure is relatively tight, the centrality of the global industrial robot trade network shows a downward trend, and the dissimilarity of the ‘core-edge’ clusters decreases year by year. The trade status of ‘catch-up’ countries represented by China has rapidly increased. However, Japan, Germany, and Italy are still in the central position of the industrial robot trade. Moreover, trade of the ‘catch-up’ countries’ is dominated by imports, and exports of industrial robot products are insufficient. Finally, policy suggestions are provided according to the results. Purpose: To perform a systematic review on the research on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to imaging published in Italy and identify its fields of application, methods and results., Materials and Methods: A Pubmed search was conducted using terms Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep learning, imaging, and Italy as affiliation, excluding reviews and papers outside time interval 2015-2020. In a second phase, participants of the working group AI4MP on Artificial Intelligence of the Italian Association of Physics in Medicine (AIFM) searched for papers on AI in imaging., Results: The Pubmed search produced 794 results. 168 studies were selected, of which 122 were from Pubmed search and 46 from the working group. The most used imaging modality was MRI (44%) followed by CT(12%) ad radiography/mammography (11%). The most common clinical indication were neurological diseases (29%) and diagnosis of cancer (25%). Classification was the most common task for AI (57%) followed by segmentation (16%). 65% of studies used machine learning and 35% used deep learning. We observed a rapid increase of research in Italy on artificial intelligence in the last 5 years, peaking at 155% from 2018 to 2019., Conclusions: We are witnessing an unprecedented interest in AI applied to imaging in Italy, in a diversity of fields and imaging techniques. Nowadays, an infectious disease outbreak is considered one of the most destructive effects in the sustainable development process. The outbreak of new coronavirus (COVID-19) as an infectious disease showed that it has undesirable social, environmental, and economic impacts, and leads to serious challenges and threats. Additionally, investigating the prioritization parameters is of vital importance to reducing the negative impacts of this global crisis. Hence, the main aim of this study is to prioritize and analyze the role of certain environmental parameters. For this purpose, four cities in Italy were selected as a case study and some notable climate parameters-such as daily average temperature, relative humidity, wind speed-and an urban parameter, population density, were considered as input data set, with confirmed cases of COVID-19 being the output dataset. In this paper, two artificial intelligence techniques, including an artificial neural network (ANN) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and differential evolution (DE) algorithm, were used for prioritizing climate and urban parameters. The analysis is based on the feature selection process and then the obtained results from the proposed models compared to select the best one. Finally, the difference in cost function was about 0.0001 between the performances of the two models, hence, the two methods were not different in cost function, however, ANN-PSO was found to be better, because it reached to the desired precision level in lesser iterations than ANN-DE. In addition, the priority of two variables, urban parameter, and relative humidity, were the highest to predict the confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The term Industry 4.0 has been coined in Germany in 2011 and since then, it has officially started the so-called fourth industrial revolution. In the herein presented review, the industrial digitalization process of Italy is explored and cross-compared to the German one, in order to unearth and analyze the intrinsic systemic key-elements, which are responsible for the differentiated digital industrial development among the examined countries. As evidenced by the analytical study, which also entails the results of a survey conducted over 238 companies in Italy, the main responsible factor for the industrial digital gap among the countries seems to be represented by a digital holistic-based approach across the entire value chain of the product. This finding, besides being reflected into the very different nature of the two Industry 4.0 policy frameworks, is also supported by survey data, since the majority of the investigated performed interventions can mainly be applied to the production process, rather than to other crucial steps of the value chain. In this regard, the survey analysis suggests also that a lack of perception of the beneficial potential effect of the change of "digital paradigm" from the production process to the product itself is yet lacking within the Italian industrial mindset. Finally, the survey results support the widely discussed synergistic beneficial effect among ecology and digitalization. Indeed, the majority of the interviewed companies have reported that many of the carried-out digitalization measures have positively affected the energetic and sustainability-related dimensions. The agricultural sector is amidst an industrial revolution driven by the integration of sensing, communication, and artificial intelligence (AI). Within this context, the internet of things (IoT) takes center stage, particularly in facilitating remote livestock monitoring. Challenges persist, particularly in effective field communication, adequate coverage, and long-range data transmission. This study focuses on employing LoRa communication for livestock monitoring in mountainous pastures in the north-western Alps in Italy. The empirical assessment tackles the complexity of predicting LoRa path loss attributed to diverse land-cover types, highlighting the subtle difficulty of gateway deployment to ensure reliable coverage in real-world scenarios. Moreover, the high expense of densely deploying end devices makes it difficult to fully analyze LoRa link behavior, hindering a complete understanding of networking coverage in mountainous environments. This study aims to elucidate the stability of LoRa link performance in spatial dimensions and ascertain the extent of reliable communication coverage achievable by gateways in mountainous environments. Additionally, an innovative deep learning approach was proposed to accurately estimate path loss across challenging terrains. Remote sensing contributes to land-cover recognition, while Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) enhances the path loss model's precision. Through rigorous implementation and comprehensive evaluation using collected experimental data, this deep learning approach significantly curtails estimation errors, outperforming established models. Our results demonstrate that our prediction model outperforms established models with a reduction in estimation error to less than 5 dB, marking a 2X improvement over state-of-the-art models. Overall, this study signifies a substantial advancement in IoT-driven livestock monitoring, presenting robust communication and precise path loss prediction in rugged landscapes. Respiratory malignancies, encompassing cancers affecting the lungs, the trachea, and the bronchi, pose a significant and dynamic public health challenge. Given that air pollution stands as a significant contributor to the onset of these ailments, discerning the most detrimental agents becomes imperative for crafting policies aimed at mitigating exposure. This study advocates for the utilization of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methodologies, leveraging remote sensing data, to ascertain the primary influencers on the prediction of standard mortality rates (SMRs) attributable to respiratory cancer across Italian provinces, utilizing both environmental and socioeconomic data. By scrutinizing thirteen distinct machine learning algorithms, we endeavor to pinpoint the most accurate model for categorizing Italian provinces as either above or below the national average SMR value for respiratory cancer. Furthermore, employing XAI techniques, we delineate the salient factors crucial in predicting the two classes of SMR. Through our machine learning scrutiny, we illuminate the environmental and socioeconomic factors pertinent to mortality in this disease category, thereby offering a roadmap for prioritizing interventions aimed at mitigating risk factors. This paper gives a detailed technical overview of some of the activities carried out in the context of the "Wireless Sensor networks for city-Wide Ambient Intelligence (WISEWAI)" project, funded by the Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo Foundation, Italy. The main aim of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale wireless sensor network deployments, whereby tiny objects integrating one or more environmental sensors (humidity, temperature, light intensity), a microcontroller and a wireless transceiver are deployed over a large area, which in this case involves the buildings of the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Padova. We will describe how the network is organized to provide full-scale automated functions, and which services and applications it is configured to provide. These applications include long-term environmental monitoring, alarm event detection and propagation, single-sensor interrogation, localization and tracking of objects, assisted navigation, as well as fast data dissemination services to be used, e.g., to rapidly re-program all sensors over-the-air. The organization of such a large testbed requires notable efforts in terms of communication protocols and strategies, whose design must pursue scalability, energy efficiency (while sensors are connected through USB cables for logging and debugging purposes, most of them will be battery-operated), as well as the capability to support applications with diverse requirements. Nowadays, Artificial intelligence (AI), combined with the digitalization of healthcare, can lead to substantial improvements in Patient Care, Disease Management, Hospital Administration, and supply chain effectiveness. Among predictive analytics tools, time series forecasting represents a central task to support healthcare management in terms of bookings and medical services predictions. In this context, the development of flexible frameworks to provide robust and reliable predictions became a central point in this healthcare innovation process. This paper presents and discusses a multi-source time series fusion and forecasting framework relying on Deep Learning. By combining weather, air-quality and medical bookings time series through a feature compression stage which preserves temporal patterns, the prediction is provided through a flexible ensemble technique based on machine learning models and a hybrid neural network. The proposed system is able to predict the number of bookings related to a specific medical examination for a 7-days horizon period. To assess the proposed approach's effectiveness, we rely on time series extracted from a real dataset of administrative e-health records provided by the Campania Region health department, in Italy. • We propose a multi-source time-series fusion methodology relying on Deep Learning. • We design a robust framework for daily 7-days-horizon predictions. • We assess the proposed approach on a real medical bookings dataset.
