Abstract

Stereo matching algorithms are essential for recovering depth information of objects in many computer vision applications including 3D reconstruction, robot navigation, autonomous driving and so on. Most of the stereo algorithms generally rely on two types of matching technique: global and local matching. The state-of-the-art stereo algorithms that measure disparity or depth with high accuracy are generally based on global methods. However, they are not suitable for real-time applications because of high computational costs. The local algorithms, on the other hand, are very fast but they provide less computational accuracy compared to the global methods. To make a tradeoff between computation speed and accuracy, this paper proposes an efficient local correlation approach for depth estimation using a pruning proposal. This paper also evaluates the performance of different matching cost functions/algorithms for disparity or dense estimation. Experimental evaluation confirms that our proposed pruning method for point correspondence is able to achieve a significant accuracy with high computational speed that can be very useful for real-time environments. Abstract

The information age came with the promise of transparency greater than anything witnessed heretofore by humanity. Of course, transparency is the essence of foresight and knowledge. The hope was for a greater accountability that would follow increased transparency, compelling policy makers to depend on knowledge and foresight rather than disinformation and hidden agendas. Recent events of the new millennium indicate that the increase has been in opacity and disinformation. The information age, often dubbed as the ‘knowledge era', has become the antithesis of knowledge, however; even its most ardent proponents admit that. Despite globalization, the information age has failed to generate knowledge-based decision-making tools. The failures of the information age to generate knowledge and remove or attenuate much of the basis of international conflicts are symptomatic of a deeper illness. Science has become the captive of the ‘New Science'that focuses on short-term, tangible, and status-quo, and doesn't even allow the real science to face in a direction that would allow the knowledge-model to launch. This science is incompatible with nature, even in competition with nature, and is not even facing the same direction as the science that is needed to increase knowledge — the only process on which rational hopes of discovering the truth may be placed. Consequently, all the promises of the information age have been failing spectacularly. Today, we have medicines that don't cure, an economy that doesn't economize, education systems that don't educate, purification techniques that do not purify, and justice systems that award plaintiffs or deliver discriminatory treatment of an accused depending on ethnic origin, religious belief, or skin colour. Today, we do collect data at an unprecedented rate, and, yet, we do not process a single set of data with any technique that is truly natural. Today, in the name of simulation, airplanes do not emulate how birds fly, computers do not emulate how the brain computes, cameras do not emulate how the human visual cortex captures and fixes an image, electricity disdains to emulate lightning (insufficiently continuous) or the electric eel (too dependent on the material properties of the receiving medium), commercial ships forego natural sources of locomotion like wind, and submarines do not emulate how fish navigate beneath the water's surface. If nature is the truth, our New Science must be falsehood.

Abstract

Refereed/Peer-reviewed Visual Place Recognition (VPR) is a fundamental yet challenging task in Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (V-SLAM) problems. The VPR works as a subsystem of the V-SLAM. VPR is the task of retrieving images upon revisiting the same place in different conditions. The problem is even more difficult for agricultural and all-terrain autonomous mobile robots that work in different scenarios and weather conditions. Over the last few years, many state-of-the-art methods have been proposed to solve the limitations of existing VPR techniques. VPR using bag-of-words obtained from local features works well for a large-scale image retrieval problem. However, the aggregation of local features arbitrarily produces a large bag-of-words vector database, limits the capability of efficient feature learning, and aggregation and querying of candidate images. Moreover, aggregating arbitrary features is inefficient as not all local features equally contribute to long-term place recognition tasks. Therefore, a novel VPR architecture is proposed suitable for efficient place recognition with semantically meaningful local features and their 3D geometrical verifications. The proposed end-to-end architecture is fueled by a deep neural network, a bag-of-words database, and 3D geometrical verification for place recognition. This method is aware of meaningful and informative features of images for better scene understanding. Later, 3D geometrical information from the corresponding meaningful features is computed and utilised for verifying correct place recognition. The proposed method is tested on four well-known public datasets, and Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) recorded dataset for experimental validation from Victoria Park, Adelaide, Australia. The extensive experimental results considering standard evaluation metrics for VPR show that the proposed method produces superior performance than the available state-of-the-art methods.
