The article informs that the American Standards Association (ASA) approved on February 27, 1950 the American Standard Method for Determining Residual Thiosulfate and tetrathionate in Processed Photographic Papers sponsored by the Optical Society of America. This section provides information on research papers that were presented during the seventh biennial Human Resource Planning Society (HRPS) Research Symposium entitled Positioning the Human Resource Function for the 21st Century, held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, on June 10 to 13, 1997. The first track concerned the investment in human capital to build competitive advantage. One of the initial papers, An Empirical Study of High Performance Work Systems: Implications for Practitioners, was presented by R. Beatty and A. Varma. Its emphasis was on efforts to achieve a fit between information, technology, people, and work. The results indicate that the better the fit, the higher the likelihood of a successful high-performance work system. M. H. Overholt, T. C. Harrington, and D. F. Lopez continued this theme in their paper, entitled Feeding the Strategic Partnering Mind: The Impact of Organizational Design on Behavior. Four companies were studied in-depth, using an organization behavior database. The empirical findings support the conclusion that organizations must be aligned and congruent to maximize competitive advantage. They must be flexible, shifting design and subsequently employee behavior to implement changing strategies in a tumultuous market.

President of the American Sociological Society Louis Wirth is planning for a Section on Contributed Papers for the next annual meeting that is to be held in New York from December 28 to 30, December, 1947. Although this Section is particularly de- signed for those younger members of the Society, including graduate students, who have not yet had an opportunity to appear on the pro- gram in other sections, contributions from other members of the Society will be welcome. Since this Committee is working closely with the Committee on Research, it is being urged that members who have completed research papers suitable for oral presentation and which do not fall within the scope of other Sections be offered for consideration in the Section on Contributed Papers.

The article discusses the actions of refugee agencies in New York City to meet the problems brought by the resettlement of Jews in the area. The most ambitious project was carried out by the National Coordinating Committee (NCC) and the National Refugee Service (NRS). NCC was busy granting loans, finding jobs, creating vocational training centers, and offering immigration services. From its inception, the leaders were interested to the absorption of immigrants. Also, NCC published a pamphlet entitled "New York ist Gross-Amerika ist Groesser," explaining to refugees the advantages of settling outside New York. A quota system was also introduced wherein each community was responsible for employment, placement and financial assistance of refugees.

This article presents information related to a business meeting. The annual AKD business meeting was held on August 31, 1986, at the New York Hilton. Jerry Michel, scholar at the Memphis State University and AKD President presided the meeting. Those present were: Candace Clark, Helen Clarke, Al Clarke, Ken Davidson, David Demo, Marie Fuller, Rose Helper, Mark Butter, Lyn Lofland, Mike Malec, Betty Maynard, Annabelle Motz, Wayne Seelbach, Don Shoemaker, Jim Skipper, Jim Williams, Kenneth Wilson and Donna Darden. In addition to normal items of business, the following announcements and decisions were made at the meeting. The winners of the 1986 paper competition were as follows First prize: Tracey Watson, Skidmore College, Second prize: Jane Melada, Montclair State and third prize: William Axinn, Cornwell. Watson's paper, "Women Athletes and Athletic Women: The Dilemmas and Contradictions of Managing Incongruent Identities," will be published in the journal "Sociological Inquiry." The Council voted to name Dennis Peck, scholar at the University of Alabama-Bitmingham, as new editor of the journal.

The article presents the proceedings of the Twenty-Second Annual Conference of American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) that was held on May 18-21, 1967 at Bolton Landing, New York. The conference was divided into fifteen formal sessions and three round tables. The new format also consists a presentation program of the best papers from a recent AAPOR competition for graduate students. In addition to the informative meetings, numerous social events were also organized. Also, the AAPOR Award of 1967 for distinguished achievement in the field of public opinion was presented to Hans Zeisel, a social researcher. Some of the topics on which papers were presented at the conference are: variations in the application of theory to attitude and opinion research; interviewing: special situations and problems; polling and the political process; socio-medical research in sensitive areas; predicting purchasing behavior: alchemy or science? and; computer-assisted analysis of survey data.

The article assess the accomplishments of seven International Congresses of Accountants held to date. The first congress held in 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri sponsored by the Federation of Societies of Public Accountants in the U.S., must be attributed to George Wilkinson, an Illinois certified professional accountant (CPA) who was born in England, but spent his professional life in the U.S. The 1904 Congress was an ambitious event for the American accounting profession. It was held when The American Association of Public Accountants had a membership of only 140 scattered over 15 states, of whom 81 held CPA certificates. The Third International Congress was held in New York City in September 1929. Joseph E. Sterrett and F. van Dien, presidents of the earlier congress, served as Honorary Presidents, while Robert H. Montgomery held the role of President of the 1929 sessions. The 1952 Congress, convened in London, England, included about 80 CPAs from the United States. It exercised a constructive influence on international finance and commerce, and stimulated avid discussion and subsequent research on fluctuating price levels in relation to accounts, accounting requirements for issues of capital, the accountant in industry, the accountant in practice and in public service, and the incidence of taxation.

This article presents information on the Religious Research Association (RRA) 2005 Annual Meeting titled "Congregations, Denominations and Research on Religion: Promoting Cooperation," to be held at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester, New York on November 4-6, 2005. Although the behavioral study of religion now extends far beyond the narrow study of religious organizations, RRA was established, in part, to focus on denominational research. While denominational researchers often collect data to answer practical questions, many academic researchers are unaware that these same data sources could address a broad range of more general theoretical questions. The meeting encourages papers on any topic related to the behavioral study of religion. Examples of possible papers and sessions on denominational data sources includes: denominational Web pages as a source of data; survey data collected by denominations; congregational yearbook data collected by denominations; pitfalls and solutions in working with denominational data; and availability of denominationally collected data.

The article announces a call for papers and programs for the Council for Exceptional Children's 59th Annual International Convention slated in April 12 to 17, 1981 in New York city. Individuals are invited to present papers or organize program sessions for the conference which may be submitted to the Program Chairperson, Jo Thomason. The selection criteria include the quality of the proposal, innovativeness, currency of the topics, estimate of audience appeal, evidence of thought and planning, feasibility of presentation made or the degree to which it addresses a special need.

Presents a speech by Donald H. Reiman, president of the Society for Textual Scholarship (STS), delivered at the thirteenth biennial conference of STS at Harvard Club in New York City, March 18, 2005. He discusses topics such as the discovery of a plenitude and variety of tools for editors and the foundation of the society.

The article reports on the minutes of the one hundred and first annual meeting of the Bibliographical Society of America held at the Lighthouse in New York on January 28, 2005. The president, John Bidwell, called the meeting to order at four o'clock in the afternoon. Stating that the minutes of the 2004 annual meeting had been published in the December 2004 issue of the journal "The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America." He called for corrections or additions. There being none, the minutes were approved as published.

The article presents updates concerning the field of operations research as of 1960. The Seventh International Meeting of the Institute of Management Sciences will be held in New York City from October 19 to 22. The Argentine Operations Research Society had elected officers of its directing council. The Operations Research Association of Bangalore held its Third Annual General Meeting in Bangalore, India in February 27. The Canadian Operations Research Society has elected D. B. DeLury as president.

In the fall of 1952, a chronological study has been conducted to solve the problem of community action in the Springdale community in New York. For this purpose interviews were arranged with ten different adults who had played key roles in the action. The case study is based primarily in the weekly paper, observations made by the field workers at meetings of various organizations. Additional information was also gathered by field workers through informal contacts in the community. The roles of various organizations were also analyzed.

The report of the membership committee of the American Sociological Society as of December 1950 is divided into two parts first, a record of organization and operations since the annual meeting in New York last December. Second, policy considerations calling for directives. The work of the committee was organized around three points. The planning and direction was centralized in a headquarters committee consisting of the chairman and the executive office of the society in New York. The implementation, including extensive correspondence and clerical work, was performed by the staff of the national office. National coverage was provided by a field committee consisting of regional and state members of the membership committee and committee representatives appointed for the larger institutions. More than anything else, the effectiveness of this work is due to the cooperative and efficient implementation of plans by the executive officer and the staff of the national office. In the field twenty-five members of the society served to promote the program regionally and more than one hundred institutional representatives combed the larger local markets. The response of these field members and representatives was frequently excellent and indicates the extent of the society's resources in this and other matters when adequate directives and materials are provided centrally.

The article presents commentary from the executive secretary of the American Finance Association (AFA). AFA depends upon the efforts of volunteers, and opportunities are available to those who might like to serve as a reviewer or co-editor, be a discussant at the annual meeting, or serve on the Board of Directors. Owing to space limitations, the 1999 AFA Annual Meeting to be held in New York CIty will involve ten percent fewer sessions than in previous years' meetings, and this number is expected to stay stable for the next three years.

The article reports on developments related to the activities of the New York Committee on Atomic Information. The committee was established in 1948 to create an awareness on the part of the people of the City of New York that atomic energy is their business and that the new discovery will affect the personal lives of the present generation and the generations to come. The 1974 American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) Conference was held between May 30-June 2, at the Hotel Sagamore in Bolton Landing, Lake George, New York. It was the twenty-ninth annual conference on public opinion. A stimulating program of twenty-two formal sessions, four methodological open discussions, and eighteen luncheon round-table discussions was organized by conference chairman John P. Robinson under the general theme "Continuities in Public Opinion Research." The AAPOR Award for distinguished achievement was presented this year to Bernard Berelson. The methodological open discussions, a 1974 innovation for AAPOR was developed to encourage critical review of the central methodological issues of public opinion research. While varying in format, they seek to encourage member discussion of short papers presented by the discussion leaders and invited panelists.

The article reports that some 230 registrants met at the Sheraton Hotel in Rochester, New York, on the first three days of April for the Sixth Annual Meeting of the National Microfilm Association. Previous meetings have been held in Washington, New York, Cleveland, Boston and Chicago. As Rochester is the home of most of the companies that supply equipment and materials to the microfilm trade, it was a particularly appropriate meeting place.
